And misses Rachel and Lucy!

I am so full of anticipatory thoughts for this Tawk I don't even know where to begin.

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:02 AM

what's up everyone are we ready to tawk some healthy enivronments?
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:02 AM

or maybe start with ung=healthy ones?
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:02 AM

Hahahaha. Yes, but we really just want to dish on our jerk bosses/coworkers. ;P
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:02 AM

ung=healthy = unhealthy

It's sure nice to see you, David!

It is I, the King of Complaints.

Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:03 AM

Robin is my newest is old friend, btw.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:03 AM

Rick - your existential angst is like the seasoning on a good chicken
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:04 AM

Hahahaha. Rosner and I only like esoteric things
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:04 AM

★ Spotlighted from David Kaufman

Well, I'm sitting at work right now, so I figured, well, might as well find out exactly why.

RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:04 AM

Well, then, David, we'll give you some answers!
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:04 AM

all right - so I can break unhealthy work environments into two arenas - a micro view, or a macro-view. where shall we start?
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:04 AM

★ Spotlighted from Rick Rosner

Just as long as it's not my Grandma's boiled chicken.

Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:04 AM

★ Spotlighted from Lucy Dyer

I once had an awesome boss. He'd let us off early if we did a good job AND he payed for all the drinks. Well, that's the perks of working in a hotel :-)

Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:05 AM

more insightful than you may realize, young ms. dyer
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:05 AM

So, what's up with work? Why do we all kind of hate it?
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:05 AM

actually, it is scientifically proven that the best way to tret you reports is to give them as much autonomy and freedom as possible, and focus solely on their results. if=gnore their process.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:06 AM

★ Spotlighted from Rick Rosner

To work is to survive. To survive is to suffer. therefore to work is to suffer. Usuallly.

Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:06 AM

shouldn't be that way, Rick.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:06 AM

what's up seth
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:06 AM

★ Spotlighted from Seth Hochman

Rick you make me want to cry

RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:06 AM

JB, that's also the best way to handle kids. And students, incidentally...
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:06 AM

not surprising
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:06 AM

here's how I like to think about work
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:07 AM

imagine we're all early humans emerging from our caves
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:07 AM

and we see each other and we're like
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:07 AM

holy shit. what are we doing here?
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:07 AM

what should we do?
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:07 AM

and we collectively start figuring out how to make our lies better and meaningful and the rest of it.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:08 AM

lives, i assume.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:08 AM

doesn't that make work seem better?
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:08 AM

yes, lives
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:08 AM

★ Spotlighted from David Kaufman

And then we invented middle management.

Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:08 AM

well, there's a lot of problems with human nature getting in the way
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:09 AM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

not much better, there are other problems with it.

Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:09 AM

but I think in the best of cases, work is about all of us working together to make our lives on the planet better.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:09 AM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

uh oh, what do you say "human nature" is?

RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:09 AM

But then, industrialism happened...
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:09 AM

★ Spotlighted from Rachel McDonnell

I see it from the perspective that everyone individually has to find what motivates and fulfills their personal/individual needs and wants. And also I think properly rewarding workers is really important.

Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:10 AM

human nature is a reaction to an infinite number of factors
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:10 AM

★ Spotlighted from Seth Hochman

Amen Rachel

RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:10 AM

★ Spotlighted from Rick Rosner

Give 'em cash

Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:10 AM

★ Spotlighted from David Kaufman

Uch. JB's already starting with his Commie crap.

Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:10 AM

well, no - I think the best and brightest should be rewarded and incentivized to be rewarded
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:11 AM

Whoa, there! Whoa. Very few can be the best and the brightest, but filfilling work is a human NEED.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:11 AM

but I'd rather the richest man in the world be the guy who figures out how to protect the earth from asteroids and not how to create financial derivatives
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:11 AM

★ Spotlighted from Rachel McDonnell

certain people respond better to extrinsic (money) rewards and others respond better to intrinsic (accomplishment), the individual differences are really interesting in job satisfaction

RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:12 AM

★ Spotlighted from David Kaufman

I think Rachel's point is perfect.

Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:12 AM

I guess I;m approaching it from a macro perspective, and talking about aligning our business goals with what our actual goals should be
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:12 AM

★ Spotlighted from Rick Rosner

Cash and massages.

Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:12 AM

★ Spotlighted from Seth Hochman

Rick don't tell us about your afternoon :-)

Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:12 AM

★ Spotlighted from David Kaufman

I, personally, respond well to cash and massages.

RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:13 AM

I do, too - and i think it's also the way to solve the problems of public school, particularly with boys in public schools - proper rewards/incentives go a long way. Give people a game they WANT to play AND can win.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:13 AM

I'd rather give cash and massages to the guy working on turning sea water into drinking water, than to guy putting doritos into tacos
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:13 AM

★ Spotlighted from David Kaufman

The thing is, that you can't create those "macro goals" as you say, without somehow altering the "micro" stuff that Rachel was talking about.

Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:14 AM

★ Spotlighted from Rick Rosner

And we'll need the de-salinated water awfully soon.

RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:14 AM

Fair enough!
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:14 AM

Unfortunately, I took a very roundabout way of saying that if our jobs don't have actual meaning towards our collective well being, they are not likely to fulfill us emotionally
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:15 AM

(Sorry, I blipped out for a second!) #techproblems
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:15 AM

★ Spotlighted from Rachel McDonnell

you can create an work environment that promotes happy, healthy, and satisfied workers

Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:15 AM

★ Spotlighted from Seth Hochman

Israel already has desalinized water

RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:15 AM

★ Spotlighted from Seth Hochman

It's good for the comp and certainly employees if you make the work somewhat enjoyable...just look at Google

Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:15 AM

really? why aren't they deploying it to California ASAP?
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:15 AM

★ Spotlighted from Rick Rosner

And great hummus.

Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:15 AM

★ Spotlighted from Rachel McDonnell

yes meaningfulness in your job is very important! I agree Jordan!

Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:15 AM

thanks, Rachel. You know who else agrees with us? Science!
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:16 AM

Totally true.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:16 AM

★ Spotlighted from Seth Hochman

it is still a costly process but they convert water from the Mediterranean into drinking water

Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:16 AM

★ Spotlighted from David Kaufman

I don't think Donald Trump is fulfilled any more emotionally if he has any effect on some sort of collective well being.

RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:16 AM

And EF Schumacher and the Schumacher society. They absolutely agree that meaningful work is essential to dignity.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:16 AM

Donald Trump is a sociopathic outlier. We're talking about the normal, decent people who work for his empire.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:17 AM

★ Spotlighted from Lucy Dyer

I was always told,if you don't like where you work,go somewhere you do

RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:17 AM

★ Spotlighted from David Kaufman

Well, as a commercial real estate attorney, I'm happy to see Donald Trump any time. But I think it goes back to Rachel's point.

Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:17 AM

as if that's a viable option 75% of the population...
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:17 AM

★ Spotlighted from Seth Hochman

Hear, hear JB

RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:17 AM

Yeah...that.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:17 AM

Like I said, industrialization happened.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:17 AM

Science, while it has quantified human satisfaction through meaningful work,
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:18 AM

See David - I like your job. It actually creates other jobs, and contributes to a healthier society.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:18 AM

also brought us the degradation of that satisfaction
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:18 AM

★ Spotlighted from David Kaufman

It's not necessarily some sort of collective "I'm doing something for society" that necessarily motivates someone.

Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:18 AM

that's right - it could be for a leader they be;ieve in
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:18 AM

through making people "unskilled workers who operate machines instead of skilled workers.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:18 AM

it could be for their co-workers
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:19 AM

★ Spotlighted from David Kaufman

Not even for a leader. Sometimes, it's "I really want that brand of sneaker."

RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:19 AM

★ Spotlighted from David Kaufman

And that's ok, too.

RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:19 AM

★ Spotlighted from David Kaufman

(Especially for the sneaker makers.)

Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:19 AM

so - is there any question about the scientific evidence that demonstrates the clear advantages of a happy and motivated employee base?
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:19 AM

None whatsoever.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:19 AM

★ Spotlighted from Rick Rosner

We call 'em tennies out here

RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:20 AM

And we all know it from our own experiences, too - I'm sure!
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:20 AM

audience - do you stipulate to the scientific evidence?
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:20 AM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

yes

Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:20 AM

★ Spotlighted from Rachel McDonnell

i agree with the evidence.

Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:20 AM

★ Spotlighted from Seth Hochman

Oh there definitely is JB

Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:20 AM

★ Spotlighted from David Kaufman

And although Rachel is using really, really big words, again, I think I agree with her yet again. (Assuming I understood all the big words.)

Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:20 AM

so - if there is this evidence, do we think companies are doing all they can to make this a reality?
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:21 AM

★ Spotlighted from Lucy Dyer

Absolutely

Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:21 AM

★ Spotlighted from Seth Hochman

Companies at the top of Fortune's 100 Best Employers outperform most other companies

Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:21 AM

★ Spotlighted from David Kaufman

So stipulated. (Uch, I have to stipulate here, too?)

Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:21 AM

★ Spotlighted from Rick Rosner

Depends on the spin

Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:21 AM

fair point
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:21 AM

but it seems to me that there is a disconect between what we seem to understand about human nature at work, and how we follow through on that
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:22 AM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

i don't think they are. not at all, generally.

RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:22 AM

Agreed.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:22 AM

★ Spotlighted from Rachel McDonnell

and some companies, say smaller businesses may not have the capable staff with knowledge of how to maintain such wellbeing in their workers

RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:22 AM

But isn';t that how we tend to do things?
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:22 AM

★ Spotlighted from David Kaufman

But, as Seth noted, often times, the physical and psychological well being of their workers improves profitability.

Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:22 AM

★ Spotlighted from David Kaufman

So if they're only thinking of profitability, that should imply that they should be thinking of their worker's well being.

RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:22 AM

Not to the best of our knowledge?
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:22 AM

and yet despite this fact, David, many comapnies do not.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:22 AM

why in the world is this?
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:23 AM

is there some psychological block?
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:23 AM

We're an ass-backwards species.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:23 AM

I think there are psychological blocks.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:23 AM

★ Spotlighted from David Kaufman

And yeah, I think there is a psychological block to some degree.

Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:23 AM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

because we are just 'cogs' in the wheel. how we feel does not matter, we are interchangeable.

RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:23 AM

I do. i think that has to do with our concepts of power structure
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:24 AM

and what it means to have power, to be in charge
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:24 AM

★ Spotlighted from Rick Rosner

The problem has become dehumanizing capitalism.

Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:24 AM

★ Spotlighted from Rachel McDonnell

well not all companies are like that. but many that is their only objective measure of success (money) so that's just what they get used to measuring. wellbeing of workers tends to be a reactionary response right now and it should be proactive

RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:24 AM

and also our Puritan heritage, where to work is to suffer and to suffer is to get to heaven, so you'd better suffer.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:24 AM

What do you think?
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:25 AM

man, I think so much my brain is exploding
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:25 AM

:)
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:25 AM

★ Spotlighted from David Kaufman

But again, if we accept the notion that happier employees means bigger profits, than capitalism would tend toward that.

Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:25 AM

exactly - but it ISN'T
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:25 AM

We don't accept that notion as a culture!
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:25 AM

We accept it as a Tawkers audience!
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:25 AM

★ Spotlighted from David Kaufman

I think Rebecca's point is probably well taken -- we assume we're supposed to hate work, just like kids are supposed to hate school.

Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:25 AM

so your point about religion and culture is very important
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:26 AM

Well, and we make both odious and unfulfilling!
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:26 AM

★ Spotlighted from Seth Hochman

From Lee Iaccoca, Chrysler CEO: “In the end, all business operations can be reduced to three words: people, product and profits. People come first.” With the right ‘business operations’ in place, your company will achieve success

Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:26 AM

★ Spotlighted from Rachel McDonnell

in times of economic strain their is always a surge in how to intrinsically motivate employees (non-monetary rewards). this is where I hope the future of research goes, it is always better to be doing the job for internally satisfying reasons.

RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:26 AM

I mean, we make both school and work odious and unfulfilling, but also religion and culture we make less than awesome.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:26 AM

★ Spotlighted from David Kaufman

There's also a machismo element -- we brag in our office about how many dementedly long nights we had and the months we billed 275 hours.

RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:26 AM

YES, YES, YES!
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:27 AM

★ Spotlighted from Rick Rosner

Our culture glorifies the extrinsic, Rachel. Sad.

RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:27 AM

And that extends to bosses and "being in charge" - being tough, "making them work for their pay"
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:27 AM

but there's another startling disconnect we seem to make
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:28 AM

psychological experiments have proven that power and money fundamentally transform perspectives
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:28 AM

YES, also.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:28 AM

Emphatically so!
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:28 AM

and yet we take no steps to account for this
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:28 AM

Even in board games, when it's not even your LIFE.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:28 AM

I don't think the people in positions of power are bad people
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:28 AM

But power makes you weird.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:28 AM

I think they are people in positions of power reacting to the factors around them
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:28 AM

★ Spotlighted from David Kaufman

This would be the Lex Luthor theory?

Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:29 AM

TOTALLY Lex Luther theory
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:29 AM

★ Spotlighted from Rick Rosner

Power corrupts, and often destroys.

RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:29 AM

And part of that is our society's expectation of what a person in power IS.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:29 AM

★ Spotlighted from Rachel McDonnell

I think certain types of people are drawn to positions of power. for instance people with a high need for power or control

RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:29 AM

Yup, yup, yup.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:30 AM

That's why there is a shortage of balanced, fair , globally-minded CEOs.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:30 AM

Indeed, but I sometimes wish that an intellect capable of earning billions would also be capable of enough self awareness to question their political and social beliefs
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:30 AM

★ Spotlighted from Seth Hochman

Sadly In the US we've more that simply want to annihilate the employee

Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:30 AM

★ Spotlighted from David Kaufman

And those with small penises.

RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:30 AM

Uh, Narcissism. hello?!?!?
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:30 AM

★ Spotlighted from Seth Hochman

There are two basic schools of thought when it comes to management, motivate or annihilate: some manager want to motivate employees to enjoy their work and be as successful as possible while others just want to get every ounce of work they can out of

Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:31 AM

★ Spotlighted from David Kaufman

Well, wait - let's back up a second. Should the CEO be focused globally or just on his employees/profits?

RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:31 AM

Yes - and reduce the workforce as much as possible.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:31 AM

I think the CEO should focus on employees and profits, and let the rest take care of itself. If companies took care of employees, I'd be ecstatic
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:32 AM

HOWEVER, the company has to be directed toward nobel ends.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:32 AM

(Which is why I keep going on about Industrialism - we're still hanging on to archaic notions of economics and how to run businesses that were born out of the Industrial Revolution)
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:32 AM

nothing is going to matter if you're in the business of financial fraud, for example.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:32 AM

Yes.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:32 AM

★ Spotlighted from Seth Hochman

greed, acquisitiveness, meanness, egotism and self-interest, are the traits of success. And while men admire the quality of the first they love the produce of the second.

Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:32 AM

★ Spotlighted from Rick Rosner

Give me a CEO not focused on profits and I'll show you an unemployed CEO.

RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:32 AM

And nothing is going to matter if we use up or pollute every resource we have.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:32 AM

★ Spotlighted from Seth Hochman

John Steinbeck said it best: "It has always seemed strange to me... the things we admire in men, kindness and generosity, openness, honesty, understanding and feeling, are the concomitants of failure in our system. And those traits we detest,

RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:32 AM

So - noble and conscientious.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:33 AM

It's not just about making money, it's about where your company fits in the global infrastructure.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:33 AM

just a brief pause of appreciation - what smart and amazing group of people are here right now
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:34 AM

I'm thrilled tobe doing this with you all. OK - back on point
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:34 AM

★ Spotlighted from David Kaufman

Well, if Monsanto treats its employees really really well, is that good or bad?

RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:34 AM

That's one of the best quotes ever, Hochman!
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:34 AM

it's bad, man.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:34 AM

Yes. because the company is destroying the planet.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:34 AM

★ Spotlighted from Rick Rosner

Kumbaya, my Lord, Kumbaya

RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:34 AM

★ Spotlighted from Seth Hochman

Aren't most of Monsanto's employees in Congress and on the Supreme Court?

Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:34 AM

If Monsanto cared about making a profit without violating acceptable standards of human well being, the'yd be a wonderful company.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:35 AM

Exactly.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:35 AM

but in practice...
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:35 AM

But, as it is, they don't have a place in a sustainable future. They need to go.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:35 AM

★ Spotlighted from Rick Rosner

Monsanto needs a dose of the ELM.

Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:36 AM

★ Spotlighted from Rick Rosner

ELF.

Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:36 AM

think about what it must be like to work for an insurance company
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:36 AM

that automatically rejects every claim 3 times before considering it on the merits
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:36 AM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

Lijke the entire nuclear industry, Monsanto needs to be shutdown.

Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:37 AM

★ Spotlighted from Seth Hochman

I wouldn't be surprised if I saw Monsanto's execs shopping at Whole Foods in the organic section...

Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:37 AM

★ Spotlighted from David Kaufman

So, OK, but there's a lot of people who like Monsanto products.

Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:37 AM

★ Spotlighted from David Kaufman

Or else they wouldn't buy them.

Fuck! You'd want to shoot yourself! So you'd probably self-medicate. And engage in risky behaviors.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:37 AM

If Monsanto allowed a healthy option to compete, people wouldn't like their products. Oh yeah, they stifle competition, which is totally un-American.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:38 AM

Monsanto bashing is easy in the aggregate, but let's ry to imagine what it's like to work there.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:39 AM

you know what you are doing to make a living. I'm sure you have found ways to justify it, but deep down, you know.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:39 AM

Well, I know that they have organic food served to them in the company cafeteria, so it can't be too bad...
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:39 AM

what imoact does that have on people's lives?
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:39 AM

Cognitive dissonance.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:40 AM

when they are intentionally misleading poor tribeswomen into buying formula they don't need - what does that do to their souls?
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:40 AM

It leads to self-medication and destructive behaviors.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:40 AM

★ Spotlighted from Rachel McDonnell

I have a hard time believing a company that is a deceitful as Monsanto has great morals and values, or treats their employees decently. If they don't treat their customers decently, you can bet they probably don't care about their employees either.

RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:40 AM

I'll bet you're right, Rach.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:40 AM

so back to the earlier point
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:41 AM

★ Spotlighted from David Kaufman

Maybe Jordan's point about the insurance company was more on target than Monsanto.

Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:41 AM

the founding fathers knew that they could not trust themselves
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:41 AM

and it's why our gov't is supposed to have checks and balances
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:41 AM

so shit can't get out of control
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:42 AM

(Also, corporations were only temporary entities before the turn of the 20th century. i think the founding fathers knew that they couldn't trust corporations, either. Just a thought)
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:42 AM

we ned checks and balances to account for the inevitable psychological influences that are more powerful than any of us
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:43 AM

I'll buy that.

And who checks and balances those who check and balance?....and so it goes....

Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:45 AM

yes Robin - absolutely. I cannot control my thoughts or my feelings - I can only control my reactions to them.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:46 AM

★ Spotlighted from Rachel McDonnell

I think it is a person x environment interaction. I think we do have internal characteristics that also impact and influence our reactions to circumstances... along with those situational circumstances

RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:46 AM

So...isn't it all about responsibility, then?
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:46 AM

True, rach - but how much of even that is drived from the circumstances into which you were born
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:46 AM

And so a responsible person would be "good" and irresponsible therefore "bad"?
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:47 AM

it's starting to get very murky for me for the "actual self" begins and the psychological responses end
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:47 AM

where the actual self begins
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:47 AM

★ Spotlighted from Rachel McDonnell

mm. I am a firm believer in personality and that a lot of it is innate (we are born with it). I think environment is a huge factor too don't get me wrong. But I'd say they both at least have the same ability to impact perception and reactions.

RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:47 AM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

don't our thoughts direct our feelings? what about positive thinking? we can influence our own reactions as well.

RT

Personality is a thing. A real thing. But maybe it's not good or bad.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:48 AM

Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:48 AM

is that your personality?
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:49 AM

haha! I mean that's the thing we don't have all the answers to this yet.. but it is quite a fascinating area of research isn't it?!? :D

RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:49 AM

No, but, like, my kid was who he is IN THE WOMB.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:49 AM

that may be true - but how much of that is then lost to psychological forces - or repressed - or soimethimng
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:49 AM

Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:50 AM

RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:57 AM

Because things were hella crappy in the factory work environments.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:57 AM

Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:57 AM

excellent point, Rebecca - unions are a perfect example of the kinds of checks and balances we need.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:58 AM

I tend to agree with you, Jordan.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:58 AM

and then we need checks and balances on the unions themselves
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:58 AM

because they became just as corrupt as the companies they opposed
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:58 AM
