Anxiety Tawk is officially a regular thing! nNicole is jumping in to co-host; we're rotating so no one burns out. (If you'd be interested in moderating with me, hit me up on Twitter.) Chat info: "Most of us have issues -- some last a lifetime; some are temporary. Despite being common, intense stigma pervades our culture & we hide everything from childhood trauma to eating disorders, hoping people will think we're normal. This tawk aims to break down that stigma and build community."

Hi, everyone! Thanks for coming to #AnxietyTalk -- Take Three! (ProTip: there’s a mobile app: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/tawkers/id791417999?mt=8 )
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:00 PM

Real quick, if you’re new to Tawkers, Nicole and I will be chatting on the left. And if you’re signed in (it only takes two minutes to set up a profile!), you can add comments/questions on the right. Interrupt any time with questions!
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:01 PM

Also, definitely use the “arrow” icons to share comments on social media so people you know will be into the discussion can join.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:01 PM

Before we start, my tawks are a safe space. Ask questions, share — but no abusive language will be tolerated. If you need to mute someone, click the “ … “ under the thumbs in their comment or click on their profile.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:01 PM

This tawk specifically comes with a Trigger Warning as we are here to discuss personal triggers, share coping mechanisms and build solidarity across stigmatized disorders. Please take care.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:02 PM

With the disclaimers out of the way, let’s start #AnxietyTalk -- Take Three! Thanks so much for co-hosting/moderating this with me, Nicole!
NH

Nicole Harris · 11:02 PM

Thank you for allowing me to join you! I'm looking forward to having this discussion.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:03 PM

Before we got started tonight, you and I were chatting about what can trigger us. We’re basically opposites. Although, I don’t always need LIFE type triggers, they’ve been almost debilitating lately.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:03 PM

What do you find are your toughest situations/circumstances?
NH

Nicole Harris · 11:04 PM

Yeah. It is interesting how it works. Right now I am having a very stressful situation with my dog who has severe separation anxiety. But that situation hasn't triggered anxiety in me.
NH

Nicole Harris · 11:04 PM

However, I notice when I have outside stressors my random attacks come more frequently.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:04 PM

There's some continuity there -- a dog with anxiety that doesn't set off your anxiety.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:05 PM

Oh, interesting. So total stress level can set the stage for unexpected attacks?
NH

Nicole Harris · 11:05 PM

Exactly. I don't have an attack when I come home and my dog ate the arm of the couch and made hash browns out of a bag of potatoes. But, I'll have a panic attack 5 days later when I am sitting down to watch a movie in a theater.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:06 PM

I find culumative stress to be a big issue for me.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:06 PM

I'm right there with you that one "disaster" isn't it, but a couple days later a shoelace breaks and it's the end of the world.
NH

Nicole Harris · 11:07 PM

I do have specific triggers and places that trigger me. But yes, the small things can set off the biggest panic attacks.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:08 PM

What are some of the things that do it for you? I feel like I see you tweet about family and crowded spaces frequently.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:09 PM

★ Spotlighted from Clarice Piper

Crowded spaces are common for people I talk with and me too, esp when I'm stressed or overly tired

KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:09 PM

★ Spotlighted from Rachel McDonnell

ugh hate feeling trapped, always sit by the door, hi everyone! :)

NH

Nicole Harris · 11:09 PM

I tend to panic most when I don't feel I have control over a situation. So crowded places can throw me off. A theater is a good example because I can start to make myself panic imagining scenarios of someone on their phone or not letting me out.
NH

Nicole Harris · 11:10 PM

I also have misophonia and emetophobia.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:10 PM

Those are terms I don't know! Share if you would!
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:11 PM

(Also, anyone can interrupt anytime -- we're just chatting about our own stuff b/c it's what we know; we're here to address whatever you want to talk about!)
NH

Nicole Harris · 11:11 PM

Sure... misophonia is being triggered by sounds. Things like humming, chewing, etc. I feel rage when triggered.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:11 PM

★ Spotlighted from Christine Salek

!! I also have misophonia. I've never known anyone else though.

KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:11 PM

Oh man....I am feeling that with you guys.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:11 PM

TAPPING OHMYGOD
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:12 PM

★ Spotlighted from Rachel McDonnell

hm I think my sister has that

KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:12 PM

★ Spotlighted from Rachel McDonnell

I just can't stand not feeling like I have an "out" if I need one, thinking about that in itself is the one main thing I guess I get anxious about, all the overthinking doesn't help either :/

NH

Nicole Harris · 11:12 PM

Emetophobia is fear of vomiting.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:12 PM

Does that cause related food/eating issues?
NH

Nicole Harris · 11:12 PM

Rachel - My emetophobia is why I always need an "out."
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:12 PM

Rachel -- I get that too. I can deal with crowds if I "know the room/area" and know I can get through it, etc.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:12 PM

★ Spotlighted from Blake Ian

Just had a wonderful discussion today about Transcendental Meditation and the positive results it has had on reducing my anxiety

KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:12 PM

★ Spotlighted from Rachel McDonnell

I need to learn how to meditate Blake, I have heard it does work wonders

NH

Nicole Harris · 11:13 PM

Yeah it does. I have been okay eating lately. But in past years I restricted my food intake for fear of being sick.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:13 PM

I'm moving to San Diego (temporary NYC sabbatical to help a friend) & am immediately looking for a yoga studio; that screen free time is so helpful for me.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:13 PM

★ Spotlighted from Blake Ian

Meditation has helped me learn to how to HAVe anxiety and not suffer from it... thats been the key for me

KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:13 PM

That's really interesting.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:13 PM

★ Spotlighted from Michael Nam

i had a bit of a panic attack this morning myself

KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:14 PM

How ya doing now, Michael?
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:14 PM

★ Spotlighted from Michael Nam

Better, but mostly because I was able to see family and just be there for them

NH

Nicole Harris · 11:14 PM

Katie - What about yoga do you feel is helpful to you?
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:15 PM

I don't know yet!
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:15 PM

:)
NH

Nicole Harris · 11:15 PM

Ha! Well I practice yoga a bit since I can no longer run. I'm really enjoying it.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:15 PM

I know I need structured screen free time. DEMANDED of me by committment to an activity.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:16 PM

That's my thing too -- I have everything from shin splits to blah blah blah....so low impact, but strengthening is ideal.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:16 PM

★ Spotlighted from Rachel McDonnell

that is the key I think Blake, I went through MAJOR anxiety a few years back when I quit smoking it was terrifying, until I realized some of the stuff I was thinking was anxiety was actually excitement, it is hard to differentiate the too with severe

KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:16 PM

★ Spotlighted from Rachel McDonnell

anxiety

KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:16 PM

★ Spotlighted from Rachel McDonnell

it's like I began confusing my emotions, it was psychologically interesting, but there really is nothing worse than frequent panic attacks and now I know that

NH

Nicole Harris · 11:16 PM

Being a science minded person some of the yoga teachers can spout some stuff I don't accept, but overall I like it.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:16 PM

Totally -- me too. In an area like SD there will be TONS of places to choose from.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:16 PM

And more affordable than NYC.
NH

Nicole Harris · 11:16 PM

Rachel - Congrats on quitting smoking!
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:17 PM

Totally!! Do you find not smoking any more, now that it's been a while, has reduced your anxiety overall?
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:17 PM

★ Spotlighted from Blake Ian

"Pain is inevitable, suffering is optional"

KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:17 PM

★ Spotlighted from Rachel McDonnell

being around my nephews always calms me down... remembering to take it a little slower and soak it all in :)

KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:18 PM

★ Spotlighted from Rachel McDonnell

thanks! it has been 2 years this may! can't believe it! :)

KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:18 PM

★ Spotlighted from Michael Nam

i've been sorta going at it at the cigarettes today, Rachel, so I'm really glad whenever anyone quits

KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:18 PM

★ Spotlighted from Rachel McDonnell

yeah it has actually, but more it felt like I was re-wiring my brain to quit a HUGE thing in my life, almost like separation anxiety, it is what I always went to always! and when it was gone it hit me harder than I thought it would

NH

Nicole Harris · 11:18 PM

I quit caffeine recently. I notice that I don't have as many panic attacks during the workday as I used to.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:18 PM

Yeah, when I stop DRINKING (as in a lifestyle), it was weird not holding a thing in my hand.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:19 PM

I'm hoping yoga and better overall health (and possibly treatment for the ADD) will help me reduce my caffiene intake. Thanks for the motivation, Nicole!
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:19 PM

★ Spotlighted from Rachel McDonnell

@Michael me too, unfortunately both my nephews parents juststarted up again :/ but I told them I never will, all I can do

KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:19 PM

★ Spotlighted from Clarice Piper

I've been limiting my caffeine recently, and that has helped me too

KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:20 PM

★ Spotlighted from Michael Nam

I'll get back on the wagon again...I have to keep trying, right?

KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:20 PM

★ Spotlighted from Rachel McDonnell

yeah we all have our bad habits and look at just how addicted we are to them, psychologically and physically months after quitting smoking I was driving to school and reached over to pick up a cig at the same spot I always did, it was like muscle

KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:20 PM

★ Spotlighted from Rachel McDonnell

memory, crazy!

NH

Nicole Harris · 11:20 PM

I still have a diet coke every so often if that is all that a restaurant has. But everything I buy is caffeine free! Switching coffee was the hardest!
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:21 PM

I think discovering which "vices" are the ones that really cause issues is key. You don't have to be a completely substance free, exercise fanatic vegan to make life work.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:21 PM

Sometimes trying to be all those things CAUSES anxiety.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:21 PM

★ Spotlighted from Clarice Piper

I'm a life-long insomniac, so some days are tough, and I let myself have the extra caffeine, and other days I am able to go caffeine free

KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:21 PM

★ Spotlighted from Michael Nam

Thanks!

KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:21 PM

★ Spotlighted from Rachel McDonnell

@Michael, yes always keep trying, it is one of the hardest things to do, quit, good luck to you! :)

NH

Nicole Harris · 11:21 PM

You are right Katie. We have to take a good look at what we are doing and why.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:22 PM

★ Spotlighted from Clarice Piper

.@Katie: Absolutely! I think it is important for each person to find what makes the anxiety less and life better

NH

Nicole Harris · 11:22 PM

I still drink beer but I no longer binge drink. (I am lucky that I am able to stop.) But it takes a very big effort to do so.
NH

Nicole Harris · 11:23 PM

When I noticed I was drinking to get rid of anxiety and not because I was enjoying the beverage I knew I had to make a change.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:23 PM

Yes. That's a definite one for me. I stopped drinking altogether for about six months a couple years ago.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:23 PM

I discovered that my systematic abuse was very situational.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:23 PM

★ Spotlighted from Rachel McDonnell

way to go Nicole! that is another huge thing to stop!

KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:23 PM

It's what's causing a lot of recent anxiety. The "easy
NH

Nicole Harris · 11:24 PM

With the help of my partner, he encouraged me and helped me in choosing one or two drinks I could slowly enjoy.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:24 PM

** "easy" side job for me to get would be bartending. But when I control the liquor, work that schedule and am surrounded by people who's lifestyle is alcohol, I'm a nightmare.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:24 PM

That's really fantastic, Nicole!
NH

Nicole Harris · 11:24 PM

I agree... I had to stop hanging out with a certain group of friends who liked drinking a bit too much.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:25 PM

Part of the destructiveness (and < 15% success rate) for AA is b/c of the all or nothing, if you have a drink you're a failure mentality.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:25 PM

★ Spotlighted from Michael Nam

Good point...caffeine hasn't been much of an issue for me unless I have it late in the day. Addiction is a problem in my family, but I've avoided our casual alcoholism at least *whew*

NH

Nicole Harris · 11:25 PM

It was sad that I lost this group because they were good people.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:25 PM

★ Spotlighted from Michael Nam

Addiction is a huge damn problem in my family...and now I'm angry again

KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:25 PM

★ Spotlighted from Rachel McDonnell

my mom was at a sleep psychologist the other day she told her that if you have caffeine after 11 am forget about sleeping good, it takes something like 8-9 hours for caffeine to leave your system

NH

Nicole Harris · 11:25 PM

Michael - I totally get the casual alcoholism. My family too!
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:25 PM

Does anyone have anything happening RIGHT NOW that we need to talk about?
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:26 PM

I like to check in around the half way point to make sure we're looking in on people who might have needs.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:26 PM

★ Spotlighted from Rachel McDonnell

definitely agree with that Katie! I went to treatment at 18 and I felt like a failure sometimes when I went back to it, but I realized that I learned my lesson at 18 I was drinking for all the wrong reasons; to avoid, escape, and later in my life I

KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:26 PM

★ Spotlighted from Rachel McDonnell

drank for different reasons, enjoyment

KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:26 PM

★ Spotlighted from Michael Nam

My cousin died last night of a drug overdose. He happened to be my childhood bully and my mom's employer who is also my roommate.

KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:26 PM

★ Spotlighted from Michael Nam

otherwise I guess I'm getting by

KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:27 PM

★ Spotlighted from Rachel McDonnell

sorry for your loss Michael :/

KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:27 PM

Oh, shit. Michael, I'm so sorry.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:27 PM

★ Spotlighted from Clarice Piper

That's a lot to take in Michael

KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:27 PM

★ Spotlighted from Rachel McDonnell

my nephews are moving away from me real soon and I have always been their caretaker, I am so nervous about letting them go :/

NH

Nicole Harris · 11:27 PM

I'm so sorry Michael. I saw that you had a death in the family.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:27 PM

Phew. Lots of major life changes happening.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:28 PM

★ Spotlighted from Michael Nam

Yeah, it's why I was overwhelmed this morning...so much other stuff coupled with negative stuff happening around. I just couldn't breathe

KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:28 PM

★ Spotlighted from Rachel McDonnell

*hugs* Michael

KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:28 PM

★ Spotlighted from Michael Nam

and last week was soooo good too

KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:28 PM

<shakes fist at life>
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:29 PM

★ Spotlighted from Michael Nam

thank you, Rachel!

KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:29 PM

★ Spotlighted from Rachel McDonnell

aint that just like life? a constant rollercoaster

KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:29 PM

★ Spotlighted from Rachel McDonnell

we are sane to be so anxious! lol

KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:29 PM

It's true; I don't get how other people are so fucking calm.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:29 PM

★ Spotlighted from Michael Nam

when it rains it pours

KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:29 PM

Do you have plans tonight that aren't sitting in your apartment?
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:29 PM

★ Spotlighted from Rachel McDonnell

they are obviously just not paying attention

NH

Nicole Harris · 11:29 PM

I put one of my dogs on Prozac last week. We are a household full of mentally ill folks and creatures. :)
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:30 PM

★ Spotlighted from Michael Nam

I kinda have to because I'm still recovering from a cold lol

KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:30 PM

MAKE PLANS FOR THIS WEEKEND
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:30 PM

(I know Michael in real life so I'm having a little guilt about being in TX and too far to take him out myself.)
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:30 PM

★ Spotlighted from Clarice Piper

I think the calm people are either lying or not paying attention

KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:30 PM

★ Spotlighted from Clarice Piper

My anxiety is sort of the other way. I've been at my job a year now, I like it, I like my coworkers, and my boss - and I'm not looking at the next move - I've been moving around for more than a decade - and the staying put makes me a bit edgy

KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:30 PM

★ Spotlighted from Rachel McDonnell

omg I get that Clarice so of the reason I rarely have real romantic relationships, it is more scary to have "found something" than to be without...

KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:30 PM

★ Spotlighted from Michael Nam

Clinic escorting? ;)

KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:30 PM

I know you find that to be stress reducing, so yes. That counts.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:30 PM

:]
NH

Nicole Harris · 11:31 PM

Clinic Escorting sometimes makes me feel better. Focusing on others allows me to be outside of my brain for a little while.
NH

Nicole Harris · 11:31 PM

I just have to ensure I don't check out of my brain for too terribly long.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:31 PM

R & C -- I'm the same way. It's why I can't have an office job or one full time job and why I prefer to work from home. I don't thrive otherwise. TRAPPED.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:31 PM

★ Spotlighted from Michael Nam

I was going to do stuff this weekend, but I may have to help with family stuff because it's so chaotic right now

KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:31 PM

★ Spotlighted from Michael Nam

but, it may help just as Nicole says...to be helping my family

KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:31 PM

★ Spotlighted from Rachel McDonnell

I think if I did clinic escorting someone on the opposing side would get knocked out "accidentally" alot

KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:31 PM

Not everyone should escort. ;)
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:32 PM

We've just found over chatting individually with each other and doing these chats that a LARGE percentage of escorts have anxiety and find volunteering to be an outlet/reducer
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:32 PM

★ Spotlighted from Clarice Piper

@Rachel - Yes! That's were I'm at now, the recent loves have moved out of state, and now that I'm going to be here a while, I'm thinking - do I really want to start something

KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:32 PM

★ Spotlighted from Rachel McDonnell

@Clarice I get you it is it is really scary, because it is a serious thing and alot of people don't take it seriously anymore, like loving someone, settling down, it's a HUGE deal

KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:33 PM

★ Spotlighted from Rachel McDonnell

why aren't more people nervous about big changes? :p I feel like a freak sometimes

KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:33 PM

★ Spotlighted from Rachel McDonnell

@Michael yes down time is important, take care of yourself too

KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:33 PM

I don't freak about the big changes.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:33 PM

I freak when there isn't enough money -- but that's a loss, not a change.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:33 PM

★ Spotlighted from Clarice Piper

@Rachel: Agreed! It is a huge deal! Letting someone into my life that close

KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:33 PM

★ Spotlighted from Michael Nam

the woman I'm seeing is in Seattle touring her show, so that...y'know what, it's almost like I have every micro-whatever for anxiety going on right now, so I'll just say yes. I should take a break sometime this weekend.

KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:34 PM

★ Spotlighted from Clarice Piper

@Rachel: NOT a freak - I really think that most people are thinking or paying attention

KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:35 PM

★ Spotlighted from Rachel McDonnell

@Clarice it is, I watch people just jump into other people like it won't change them forever, I was always the girl hopping back and forth across the line, trying to find the courage to stay on the otherside

KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:35 PM

★ Spotlighted from Rachel McDonnell

thanks Clarice :)

KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:35 PM

★ Spotlighted from Rachel McDonnell

@Michael - maybe some nature would help? Always helps me :)

KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:35 PM

Picnic!
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:36 PM

★ Spotlighted from Michael Nam

lol...last week I was counseling at a sleepaway camp

KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:36 PM

That sounds amazing!
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:36 PM

(hence the really great week?)
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:36 PM

★ Spotlighted from Clarice Piper

I usually stay just outside, trying to find the courage to let people in (esp romantically)

KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:36 PM

I've stopped cramming myself in the heteronormative box that says I'm supposed to pair bond with someone for the rest of my life.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:36 PM

I don't do primary relationships. I don't like them.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:37 PM

There.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:37 PM

I said it.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:37 PM

(Ok, I've said it before.)
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:37 PM

If you aren't comfortable in a relationship/dating -- it might not be b/c you're broken. It might just be part of who you are.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:37 PM

AND THAT PERSON WHO YOU ARE IS AWESOME
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:37 PM

★ Spotlighted from Michael Nam

it was...I keep thinking about those amazing kids, and it really does take some of the edge away

KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:37 PM

★ Spotlighted from Rachel McDonnell

me too Clarice, I always get scared I am makign the wrong decision, but maybe by making no decision that is a decision

KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:37 PM

★ Spotlighted from Rachel McDonnell

you are my hero Katie! :)

KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:37 PM

Haha. Nah, just at the point where I don't have much to lose about being all open about everything.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:37 PM

★ Spotlighted from Michael Nam

lol...I woke up one day and I had all these poly friends who really at least shifted my worldview on that score

KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:38 PM

★ Spotlighted from Rachel McDonnell

so how sick is everyone of like trying to explain actual anxiety and phobias to people, so they take it seriously?

KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:38 PM

Rachel -- a lot. I pretty much talk about my anxiety the way people talk about their bad knee acting up or diabetes being an issue.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:38 PM

★ Spotlighted from Clarice Piper

@ Katie: Thanks. I'm wary of people in general, so finding one person to be romantic with it quite a lot of work

NH

Nicole Harris · 11:38 PM

Yes... I very casually talk about my anxiety now.
NH

Nicole Harris · 11:38 PM

My depression I still hold the cards a bit closer.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:39 PM

★ Spotlighted from Rachel McDonnell

I really do want to be with a great guy, but I mean like it will take a special person to get me to be with someone forever, very special, like 1 of a kind, diamond in the rough stuff I will not settle and people don't get that

KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:39 PM

★ Spotlighted from Clarice Piper

@ Rachel: Absolutely: It should be as such - no one should settle

KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:39 PM

★ Spotlighted from Clarice Piper

@ NIcole: I hold the depression cards close too

KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:40 PM

Nicole/Christine -- do you find the depression holds more stigma?
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:40 PM

★ Spotlighted from Christine Salek

Same, Nicole. I've found that it's easier for people to understand the general idea of anxiety (which comforts me to a point), but less so how truly debilitating depression is.

NH

Nicole Harris · 11:40 PM

I think so.
NH

Nicole Harris · 11:40 PM

And here is some breaking news... I am now having anxiety.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:40 PM

★ Spotlighted from Christine Salek

Yes. In my experience, how physically debilitating it can be for long periods of time -- people can't understand that even when they're witnessing it first-hand.

NH

Nicole Harris · 11:41 PM

My neighbor just rang the doorbell and told us her house was broken into today.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:41 PM

Nicole -- if you have to go do a thing, it's cool.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:41 PM

We aren't here to spike your anxiety on top of situational anxiety!
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:41 PM

★ Spotlighted from Michael Nam

oh man!

NH

Nicole Harris · 11:41 PM

It's better that I sit here.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:42 PM

Ok
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:42 PM

★ Spotlighted from Rachel McDonnell

Thanks Clarice, I think that too! What is the point of settling in a miserable relationship, no thanks :p

NH

Nicole Harris · 11:42 PM

Not much I can do really.

Absolutely - there's a lot of "Just think yourself happy" type talk out there (roll eyes) If it was that easy, don't people think I would have done it by now?!?

KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:42 PM

That's a hard sentence for me to say.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:42 PM

A lot of my previous anxiety was over what I couldn't do.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:42 PM

My mother is a piece of work and her reactions and behaviors are unpredictable, so I used to try and emotionally manage the house in preparation for anything.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:43 PM

I was an emotional prepper.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:43 PM

That you can say "not much I can do" is badass.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:43 PM

oh my goodness! yes anything you need to do, do it Nicole

KK

my nephew was just asking about Robin Williams and I was trying to explain suicide and depression it is a complex thing, people don't get that

KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:43 PM

★ Spotlighted from Michael Nam

I think the Robin Williams tragedy very much says how much of a problem people's view of depression still can be

KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:43 PM

★ Spotlighted from Michael Nam

That's probably why you're such the activist as well, Katie...I always feel like I should be fixing something as well

My fiancé's anxiety is like that (even though I'm not naming him, he's said it's OK to share) -- he gets preoccupied with being there for everyone, and often overdoes it when he worries about situations he cannot influence at all.

KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:43 PM

Yes, the caretaker who doesn't care for themselves. It's a big problem.

I had a seizure once because of too much stress, running around trying to finish school work, making dinner, watching my nephews, I just collapsed, that's when I knew I needed to calm down a bit!

KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:44 PM

OMG! Do you have a pre-disposition, or was it literally your body freaking out?
NH

Nicole Harris · 11:44 PM

Oh no. That is awful Rachel.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:44 PM

★ Spotlighted from Clarice Piper

As we talked about a bit last time (or the first time) self care is incredibly important, but certainly overlooked (myself included)

KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:45 PM

★ Spotlighted from Michael Nam

self-aware but lacking self care :(

KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:45 PM

★ Spotlighted from Christine Salek

Exactly. And since my own anxiety peaked a few years ago, I feel like I've gained SOME insight since then, but when I tell him "you have to put yourself first," I have trouble believing it sometimes.

KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:45 PM

Yeah, people with anxiety and depression GIVE great advice. The taking, though...
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:45 PM

★ Spotlighted from Rachel McDonnell

no I haven't had one since or one before that, it was just like all of a sudden my body couldn't handle all the stress

KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:45 PM

I get to the point where I can't move.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:45 PM

My panic is imobile.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:46 PM

but yeah I am a caretaker to a T I am never NOT taking care of something or someone, trying to make more time for myself now

KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:46 PM

★ Spotlighted from Christine Salek

Rachel, that actually happened to me too. No prior history, it just happened once and hasn't happened since.

NH

Nicole Harris · 11:46 PM

My self care right now is making sure I get to my therapist once a week.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:46 PM

When I can't work out a solution to a big life problem or set of problems, I just end up nauseous, on the couch, unable to do anything.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:46 PM

That's good self care!
NH

Nicole Harris · 11:46 PM

I am so very thankful I have awesome insurance.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:46 PM

Do you have someone you like and trust?
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:46 PM

★ Spotlighted from Rachel McDonnell

I knew someone else it happened to too Christine, and the doctors apparently told him it does happen every so often that people can have 1 or 2 seizures because of stress scary

NH

Nicole Harris · 11:47 PM

Yes. I went into my first appointment with my therapist with a list of questions and items that were deal breakers.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:47 PM

AWESOME
NH

Nicole Harris · 11:47 PM

I basically interviewed her to make sure we were compatible.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:47 PM

That's really what we're supposed to do.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:47 PM

★ Spotlighted from Rachel McDonnell

that is a great idea Nicole! finding the RIGHT therapist is SO important

NH

Nicole Harris · 11:47 PM

It's so hard to do but well worth it.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:48 PM

★ Spotlighted from Michael Nam

That's worth noting should I ever seek therapy, thanks Nicole!

KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:48 PM

★ Spotlighted from Rachel McDonnell

what were some questions you asked? (if you don't mind me asking)

KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:48 PM

everyone could benefit from some talk therapy, even if it is just with someone who loves you unconditionally

KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:48 PM

★ Spotlighted from Christine Salek

>> for that reason. I'm literally too anxious to see a therapist to help me with my anxiety.

NH

Nicole Harris · 11:49 PM

Sure Rachel... I started off with telling her that I am an atheist and ensuring she did not have a problem with that.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:49 PM

(btw I have a couple friends who have used this directory to find a therapist that works for them in particular: http://bit.ly/1BffAKH )
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:49 PM

(so you can do some pre-screening and check for insurance compatability)
NH

Nicole Harris · 11:49 PM

I also told her I was willing to try new things, but I am mostly interested in evidence-based practices.
NH

Nicole Harris · 11:50 PM

I kind of gave her a run down of my political leanings too.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:50 PM

★ Spotlighted from Rachel McDonnell

Christine, it is tough, I remember when I was in my teens when I was the most suicidal and depressed of my life and I just loved my therapist I found and then she left like 3 months later, I never really went back to see anyone else,

KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:50 PM

such abandonment issues I have

NH

Nicole Harris · 11:50 PM

That sort of stuff comes up more in therapy than I think most people realize.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:50 PM

That's important if you're an activist of any kind.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:51 PM

Also, if you have family conflicts over beliefs, etc!
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:51 PM

★ Spotlighted from Rachel McDonnell

that is awesome Nicole, I'll have to remember to ask these things! :)

KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:51 PM

Insurance...there's an anxiety-inducer

NH

Nicole Harris · 11:51 PM

Yes, I knew it was important because I would have to talk to her about my activism.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:51 PM

Michael -- that's part of what makes that link so great.
NH

Nicole Harris · 11:51 PM

I lie at my job about what I do on Saturdays. I was not going to lie to a therapist.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:51 PM

Yeah, Nicole...I think we have similar political/belief leanings

KK

KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:52 PM

And in between most of us talk about these issues between tawks. There's always someone around who knows how you're feeling -- and not just because they were nervous once.
NH

Nicole Harris · 11:54 PM

KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:55 PM

KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:56 PM

Just having other people to vent to who know you aren't whining is SO helpful.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:56 PM

At least it has been to me.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:56 PM

KK

KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:56 PM

So I started tweeting about it and people were all "OH ME TOO" & "WAIT, I'M NOT WEIRD?" Nah. Not weird. Just stigmatized.

KK

Katie Klabusich · 11:57 PM

DO SOME SELF CARE. Either tonight or this weekend. Even if it's sitting still with a book. Or watching terrible television.
