RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:02 AM

I was just thinking about how important art is to our healing process as human beings
LD

Lucy Dyer · 12:02 AM

yes. those are some great videos there.
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:02 AM

it's pretty influential.
LD

Lucy Dyer · 12:02 AM

i should say so. it certainly helps me
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:02 AM

I can't tell you how many times music literally has saved my life... it is amazing that art has such a raw power to it
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:03 AM

And I was thinking of how important it is that children be continuously exposed to art, for just this reason
LD

Lucy Dyer · 12:03 AM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

kellys vids are great!

LD

Lucy Dyer · 12:03 AM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

thats the truth

RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:03 AM

It saddens me that the arts are the first to go in public schools, when those kids probably need it the most :/
LD

Lucy Dyer · 12:03 AM

the kids of today dont know what true art is
LD

Lucy Dyer · 12:04 AM

especially with music. its like all the fun has been taken away
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:04 AM

really you think? don't you think that may have to do with the arts being seen in such a negative or "optional" light by the majority?
LD

Lucy Dyer · 12:04 AM

★ Spotlighted from Mike Dwornik

Hiya gang!

LD

Lucy Dyer · 12:04 AM

plus art can be used to help kids express themselves when talking cant help.
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:04 AM

well I will just say it... I don't get autotune and never will.. if you can't sing - don't. lol
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:05 AM

yes exactly! art can be such an amazing therapy tool for anyone
LD

Lucy Dyer · 12:05 AM

ack auto tune....thank shows like The voice and britian/americas got talent
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:05 AM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

art and creativity is the fun and color of life.

LD

Lucy Dyer · 12:05 AM

talent,my arse
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:05 AM

I think you hit the nail on the head there Robin!
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:06 AM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

might have more to do with wanting to keep kids from getting their minds opened up too much and beginning to question the status quo. = D

LD

Lucy Dyer · 12:06 AM

ope a childs mind up? heaven forbid.
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:06 AM

ugh I can't stand any of those shows I think I watched the first season of American Idol or a few eps and then I was like this is ridiculous especially as a singer myself (not professional) I just thought the ridicule of the judges was just awful
LD

Lucy Dyer · 12:06 AM

★ Spotlighted from Mike Dwornik

Art and music are just too expensive... like having enough teachers.

LD

Lucy Dyer · 12:06 AM

god yes. there just arent that many art teachers as there were in my day
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:07 AM

yeah out children could be inventing some cool things for us... but no they must keep there minds in the box
LD

Lucy Dyer · 12:07 AM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

ya right, mike. gotta pay for all those corporate subsidies, eh?

RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:07 AM

I'd say we should finance things that help out childrens well being over constant war.. but that's just me
LD

Lucy Dyer · 12:07 AM

art is a drug - and its totally free
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:07 AM

I'm a radical
LD

Lucy Dyer · 12:07 AM

★ Spotlighted from Mike Dwornik

Correct Robin!

RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:07 AM

lol
LD

Lucy Dyer · 12:08 AM

i agree with you there rachel. too much war can make a mind go dark
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:08 AM

yeah you really can't get any more free than when you are in the moment... I frequently star in my own shows in the kitchen while making dinner haha
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:08 AM

thanks Robin, it's nice to know I'm not alone :)
LD

Lucy Dyer · 12:09 AM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

art is definitely a drug... a happy maker and a thinker inducer.

LD

Lucy Dyer · 12:09 AM

rahcel is nevre frivilous...well,not that i am aware
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:09 AM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

aint just you rachel

RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:09 AM

so when did you really "discover" art Lucy?
LD

Lucy Dyer · 12:09 AM

★ Spotlighted from Mike Dwornik

That would be very frivolous, Rachel.

RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:09 AM

I am assuming you were quite young?
LD

Lucy Dyer · 12:09 AM

a couple of years ago. when i really started working on my "craft"
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:09 AM

haha I am not frivolous Lucy is right lol I was always the worrier
LD

Lucy Dyer · 12:09 AM

its amazing what you can find thru google, and facebook. and word of mouth
LD

Lucy Dyer · 12:10 AM

thank god i aint american then,mike :-)
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:10 AM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

= D i had my grandson here a couple weeks. we did 'home schooling' nothing but art and music and field trips. ya, he loved it! me too.

RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:10 AM

That sounds awesome Robin! My sister is homeschooling my nephews next year and I can't wait to go on nature hikes and music.. what a better way to spend the day
LD

Lucy Dyer · 12:10 AM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:11 AM

LD

Lucy Dyer · 12:11 AM

i took up art a couple of years ago, seriously, after i had been doing it for years before hand
LD

Lucy Dyer · 12:12 AM

RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:12 AM

LD

Lucy Dyer · 12:14 AM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

oh. haha. great, lucy

RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:15 AM

so you caught the art bug a few years back and then began dabbling.. what happened after that? Any big breaks? or did you just do it for the love of it
LD

Lucy Dyer · 12:15 AM

well,i think i have said this before but....it all really started for me when i did a piece for Lee Camp
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:16 AM

really any reason to plug it ;) because that is just so COOL! :D
LD

Lucy Dyer · 12:16 AM

he and steve hicks, bill hick's brother, pushed me to do more. so i did
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:16 AM

you should show the piece :)
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:16 AM

so you started designing like their posters and such right?
LD

Lucy Dyer · 12:16 AM

LD

Lucy Dyer · 12:16 AM

i think thats it
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:16 AM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

yes you should!

RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:17 AM

I just love that piece he is all calm and collect at the forefront.. but inside his head... lol
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:17 AM

see I can read art haha
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:17 AM

I never felt like I was very good at judging art... :/
LD

Lucy Dyer · 12:17 AM

yeah i did that one. and then i jdid Lee's UK tour flyers for 2012
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:17 AM

Lee is an awesome guy btw... if you don't watch his Moment of Clarity show you should :)
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:18 AM

I mean that is just so cool! :)
LD

Lucy Dyer · 12:18 AM

thanks :-)
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:18 AM

to have your stuff on a flyer.. must have felt great! :)
LD

Lucy Dyer · 12:18 AM

hell yeah it was!!
LD

Lucy Dyer · 12:18 AM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

that is so cool, lucy! congrats!

RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:18 AM

haha well that's really the whole point right Mike? ;) agitate and educate people :)
LD

Lucy Dyer · 12:19 AM

★ Spotlighted from Mike Dwornik

I love to share posts by Lucy, Lee Camp and others. It really gets my conservative friends and former co-workers agitated!

RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:19 AM

I think that is the purpose of a lot of art... especially when you consider political art
LD

Lucy Dyer · 12:19 AM

nice one mike! keep opening peoples minds
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:19 AM

I was doing some research for this tawk and I came across this article http://www.theguardian.com/education/2013/nov/27/postgraduate-art-and-politics
LD

Lucy Dyer · 12:20 AM

yeah. altho recently i have been scaling back on my political art. i think i have found my niche,as it were. altho i do love to do my quote images
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:20 AM

It is nice to see that there are programs out there
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:20 AM

that focus on art and politics
LD

Lucy Dyer · 12:20 AM

★ Spotlighted from Mike Dwornik

They do the same with their right wing gun toting bible beating junk. My ammo is much better!

LD

Lucy Dyer · 12:21 AM

i wish there were more like that out there
LD

Lucy Dyer · 12:21 AM

steady on,robin!
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:21 AM

haha that's awesome Mike, definitely keep that up :)
LD

Lucy Dyer · 12:21 AM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

i think i love you, mike = D

RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:21 AM

so you are scaling back on the political art?
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:21 AM

may I ask why?
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:22 AM

we have a bromance a brewin in the audience
LD

Lucy Dyer · 12:22 AM

i think people use art to a message across that they cant verbally do otherwise
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:22 AM

haha
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:22 AM

sometime you don't know how to put your feelings into words
LD

Lucy Dyer · 12:22 AM

mm well, mainly cos there are others that d it far better than me
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:22 AM

who are your favorites?
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:23 AM

any artistic role models?
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:23 AM

oops sorry Robin! :)
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:23 AM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

well, i'm not a bro, actually

LD

Lucy Dyer · 12:23 AM

art wise,i guess people like Anthony Freda and Shepard Fairey
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:23 AM

★ Spotlighted from Mike Dwornik

Seriously, someone has to let them know that things are not as black and white as they think.

RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:24 AM

thanks *foot* *mouth* :)
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:24 AM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

noprob rachel

LD

Lucy Dyer · 12:24 AM

musically? linkin park and rooftop revolutionaries. and for inspirational purposes -depeche mode
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:24 AM

★ Spotlighted from Mike Dwornik

Georgia O'Keeffe is one of mine.

RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:24 AM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

i love georgia o'keefe

RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:25 AM

I was always more interested in the musical aspect of art... I love to sing. I love lyrics. I love how they can convey things that I never could
LD

Lucy Dyer · 12:25 AM

bu ti have seen some damn awesome art on FB. some of the stuff is just amazing
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:25 AM

linkin park used to be awesome! don't listen to them too much anymore
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:25 AM

speaking of which I was jamming out to 90'smusic last night lol
LD

Lucy Dyer · 12:26 AM

ooo i'm like that with 80's music, rachel lol
LD

Lucy Dyer · 12:26 AM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

the magic of the woven word! love it

RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:26 AM

yeah I agree I have seen some really cool things. It's amazing that most of the coolest things we see are made by "amateur" artists who people rarely remember
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:26 AM

80's music is great too :)
LD

Lucy Dyer · 12:26 AM

★ Spotlighted from Mike Dwornik

Sometimes with great music, you don't really need words.

LD

Lucy Dyer · 12:27 AM

if it speaks to you,i think the artist has done his/her job
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:27 AM

I get that.. but I am a singer first and foremost so I need words lol
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:27 AM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

right mike. i sorta prefer songs in other languages or word free

LD

Lucy Dyer · 12:27 AM

i hate it when the singer on the tune gets the words wrong...
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:27 AM

instrumental music was really hard for me to enjoy for that reason alone.. I sing. in music theory classes I had to work to really love all the instrumentals
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:27 AM

yes! I can't stand when people lip sync
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:27 AM

:P
LD

Lucy Dyer · 12:28 AM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

i sing like a frog = D

RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:28 AM

would you still consider it "art" if the person sold out? I am just thinking of singers with amazing talent who go on to become Brittany Speaks wannabes or something...
LD

Lucy Dyer · 12:29 AM

in a word Rachel - yes
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:29 AM

just bad art? lol
LD

Lucy Dyer · 12:29 AM

★ Spotlighted from Mike Dwornik

Not to say that I admirer good lyrics..."Why do I need TV when I've got T Rex?"

LD

Lucy Dyer · 12:29 AM

why be somebody else? why dont you be yourself?
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:29 AM

I don't know... our society doesn't want to see that :P
LD

Lucy Dyer · 12:29 AM

wouldnt say its all bad but i just dont get it
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:30 AM

That is true.. I like a lot of "bad" music lol
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:30 AM

I used to be a teenybopper.. it's true. haha
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:30 AM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

if it makes someone happy, or speaks to them... its still art.

LD

Lucy Dyer · 12:30 AM

★ Spotlighted from Mike Dwornik

Art purely for profit?

RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:30 AM

yeah I think the management behind those acts are the driving force in alot of the mainstream music business
LD

Lucy Dyer · 12:30 AM

good point Mike
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:31 AM

I was going to go into the music biz until I realized how driven they are by pure profitability.. like NO THAT IS NOT WHAT MUSIC IS ABOUT
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:31 AM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

it wouldn't work for me... to create for the profit motive. no life or soul in that.

LD

Lucy Dyer · 12:32 AM

"Art does not make money. manipulation makes money. what does that say about us?"
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:32 AM

I am with you Robin. If it doesn't help someone out or help someone feel better what is the point? That is all I have ever known I have wanted to do with my life - I used to want to do it with music.. but I had high stage fright :p
LD

Lucy Dyer · 12:32 AM

★ Spotlighted from Mike Dwornik

Someone has a hit song, then the record company only wants to hear something similar as a follow up.

LD

Lucy Dyer · 12:33 AM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

nothing good, lucy

RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:33 AM

it says we are so terrified of any type of free thought or will... that may be extreme but..
LD

Lucy Dyer · 12:33 AM

music and art can bring out the best in someone. it can lift you up when you see the effect it has on someone. THAT'S why i do it
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:33 AM

exactly! to help lift people up
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:34 AM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

i was just thinking something like that rachel

RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:34 AM

I do think there is certain music for example that definitely dwells on all the negatives... I don't know how that can lift people up, but it maybe makes people feel they aren't alone in their misery?
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:34 AM

I can't listen to those rock stations - so negative about everything
LD

Lucy Dyer · 12:34 AM

i wanna know if people like a piece i have done. if they dont,i get rid of it. maybe extreme but thats just me. altho i am getting better at that lol
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:35 AM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

like we are "groomed" to think a certain kind of thing is acceptable. we don't want to 'like' the wrong thing and be 'stupid' or someting. "unfashionable"

LD

Lucy Dyer · 12:35 AM

it slike, for years i always thought depeche mode was so dark and sad...but its not. if you listen to the lyrics, they are some sexy stuff! lol
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:35 AM

I think that is a HUGE influence on us in our present society Robin.. probably why so many great "non-mainstream" artists go unrecognized
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:36 AM

haha oh yeah you have told me about his band before :)
LD

Lucy Dyer · 12:36 AM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

ya lucy! positive feedback is great.

RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:36 AM

yeah all art has layers
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:36 AM

I guess you could say
LD

Lucy Dyer · 12:37 AM

★ Spotlighted from Mike Dwornik

I used to have that back in the day, Rachel. Now that I am older and do not care quite as much what people think It has gotten easier. Not so much with music as speaking publicly.

LD

Lucy Dyer · 12:37 AM

i agrees with art having layers. when you look at a piece, different people see different things in it
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:37 AM

@Mike omg public speaking is awful too! lol. my music training helped with my stage fright but ultimate I just decided I wasn't cut out for being a "diva" lol
LD

Lucy Dyer · 12:37 AM

exactly,robin
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:37 AM

or like you feel or think something new everytime you hear a song
LD

Lucy Dyer · 12:37 AM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

layers, for sure. because each piece contains a part of the one who made it.

RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:38 AM

or when you listen to it at different times in your life it affects you differently
LD

Lucy Dyer · 12:38 AM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

different interpretations... make for interesting discussion

RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:38 AM

so really it isn't the art itself that is having the effect... it's the persons reactions and perceptions of the art that make it powerful
LD

Lucy Dyer · 12:39 AM

never thought of it that way.
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:39 AM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

ambiguity is a beautiful thing

RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:39 AM

haha this is why I became a psychologist! LOL! my brain..
LD

Lucy Dyer · 12:39 AM

its like when you read a good book, you get transported to anther place and time
LD

Lucy Dyer · 12:39 AM

★ Spotlighted from Mike Dwornik

Oh yes Rachel. Especially if it gives you goosebumps!

RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:40 AM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

a thing where you know exactly what it is about, is not much fun. no room for interpretation and discussion

RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:40 AM

does the audience want to bring up any topics or questions?
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:40 AM

:)
LD

Lucy Dyer · 12:40 AM

aint that the truth
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:40 AM

That is why it is so sad that art is given such negative connotations these days.. we need that freedom now more than ever!
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:40 AM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

these days we really need to be transported

LD

Lucy Dyer · 12:41 AM

★ Spotlighted from Mike Dwornik

True, Lucy!

RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:41 AM

it's sort of like.. haven't we been past the burning books stage for a hell of a long time now??
LD

Lucy Dyer · 12:41 AM

and i think with people like Lee,eleanor, abby, jenna and SO many more...the use of "art" is making a huge come back
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:42 AM

I agree, but they still remain for the most part underground (compared to mainstream)
LD

Lucy Dyer · 12:42 AM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

old traditions die hard!

LD

Lucy Dyer · 12:42 AM

this is true. and the hard part is getting them out to the masses. but it will happen
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:42 AM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

must be because it is such a mind opener

RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:43 AM

which is why art programs are so important!
LD

Lucy Dyer · 12:43 AM

wow love that,robin.
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:43 AM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

the slow leak can become the flood

LD

Lucy Dyer · 12:44 AM

so much better than the trickle down effect. lol
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:44 AM

can you make that into an art piece Lucy? I love that you are creating art from quotes now
LD

Lucy Dyer · 12:44 AM

ooo maybe i could...
LD

Lucy Dyer · 12:44 AM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

= D thanks

RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:44 AM

that would be sort of cool to see! :)
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:44 AM

It is like a word-association thing... we can come up with a quote and you can create it! :)
LD

Lucy Dyer · 12:45 AM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

go for it lucy =]

LD

Lucy Dyer · 12:45 AM

★ Spotlighted from Mike Dwornik

Anything can become art under the right circumstances.

LD

Lucy Dyer · 12:45 AM

very true Mike. everything and anything is art
LD

Lucy Dyer · 12:45 AM

YOU are art
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:46 AM

I am trying to think of the name of this piece of orchestra music we listened to in music theory it was a piece that simulated the bombs falling at Hiroshima.. it was CHILLING
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:46 AM

but awesome that they could do it with just instruments
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:46 AM

we are all artistic creations :)
LD

Lucy Dyer · 12:46 AM

awesome when music can do that
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:46 AM

sometimes those help... ? lol
LD

Lucy Dyer · 12:46 AM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

Salvadore Dali... said, "I am art!"

RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:47 AM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

or maybe it was... "I am drugs!" ya that was it

LD

Lucy Dyer · 12:47 AM

ha! theres a great Hicks quotes about that...
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:47 AM

yes it was so amazing like you were shocked listening to it like you were in the middle of the town and sirens going off
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:48 AM

Robin, we have a thing in my family, when someone calls you weird you say thank you. :)
RM
