Ben Weixlmann · 12:01 AM

Good evening, folks. Shoot your questions out and let's get this going.
HP

Harry Plumer · 12:01 AM

Good evening! Now that I've figured out how to use this thing, I've got my giant thing of Diet Coke, no donuts like the last live chat, but I did eat a large mexican dinner. If I disappear for a few minutes, you'll know why.
BW

Ben Weixlmann · 12:01 AM

★ Spotlighted from Chris Davis

What one team could be this year's St. Bonaventure?

BW

Ben Weixlmann · 12:01 AM

Chris, I think you really have to dig to find that team this year. The upper echelon has really separated itself from the pack, in my opinion. SLU and VCU are both formidable squads. Temple is my pick to win it all, though. But they're the 3-seed.
HP

Harry Plumer · 12:02 AM

I think if you're looking at a low seed as a dark horse you have to look at teams that get get hot and outscore people. I think Richmond could fall into this category as well as St. Joseph's.
BW

Ben Weixlmann · 12:02 AM

★ Spotlighted from Rachael Workman

A-10 baby... We don't suck.

BW

Ben Weixlmann · 12:02 AM

Damn right this league doesn't suck, Rachel. Should be a 5 team NCAA turnout when it's all said-and-done.
BW

Ben Weixlmann · 12:02 AM

That's a very good point on Richmond. I've had a number of folks in and around the league tell me to watch out for Richmond. They could be a spoiler.
HP

Harry Plumer · 12:03 AM

That system can be a real pain for teams on both ends. If I have to go dark horse, the Spiders are my pick. Darien Brothers can beat teams by himself if he gets hot from outside.
BW

Ben Weixlmann · 12:03 AM

★ Spotlighted from Andy Carbaugh

Which team do you think got the best draw (of teams with bye and w/o bye) given prospective matchups?

BW

Ben Weixlmann · 12:03 AM

Andy, it's got to be Temple. I really like their matchup against VCU and they won't need to meet SLU until the final if both teams get that far.
HP

Harry Plumer · 12:03 AM

I agree, Ben, but the Owls shouldn't overlook UMass. And I'm not just saying that because I cover them. That game in Amherst was as close as can be, and the Minutemen jumped up and surprised the Owls in last year's quarters... Just saying.
HP

Harry Plumer · 12:04 AM

Can we agree that Temple is coming in looking the best of any team?
HP

Harry Plumer · 12:04 AM

That said, I did just float the possibility of a Temple upset in the QF, so I can't rule that out either.
BW

Ben Weixlmann · 12:04 AM

★ Spotlighted from Bill Taylor

Thoughts on the best quarter final potential match ups....Butler-LaSalle and UMass-Temple look like great matchups.

BW

Ben Weixlmann · 12:04 AM

★ Spotlighted from Dan Cutler

O'Brien is the X-Factor for Temple, if hes playing like the last 30 minutes of the VCU game, they will be there come the end

BW

Ben Weixlmann · 12:05 AM

Dan, GREAT point. Have been talking O'Brien up all year. Really like what he can do for the Owls.
HP

Harry Plumer · 12:05 AM

Interesting fact for those who don't know: O'Brien started at BU, hurt himself at Mullins against UMass back in 2010, sat out so long he decided to transfer to Temple.
HP

Harry Plumer · 12:05 AM

★ Spotlighted from Chris Davis

I feel like, again, Temple may be the best now, but they can be so hit or miss.

BW

Ben Weixlmann · 12:05 AM

★ Spotlighted from Andrei Berman

Totally agree with Harry that Richmond is dangerous. Not only do they have an easy first round game but SLU doesn't have as much to play for and I could see the Spiders giving the Bilks a run for their money. Mooney is a terrific coach.

BW

Ben Weixlmann · 12:06 AM

I disagree that SLU doesn't have much to play for, Andrei. It is looking for the best seed it can possibly get in the NCAA Tournament. Plus, you haven't met Jim Crews yet. This team's mentality is absolutely about playing hard each and every time out.
BW

Ben Weixlmann · 12:06 AM

★ Spotlighted from Dani Lerro

Which fan base do you foresee bringing the most fans this year?

BW

Ben Weixlmann · 12:06 AM

Since it's in NYC, I'll say Ford...(I can't even finish the rest without laughing). In all seriousness, The biggest fan base will probably be VCU or Temple. The Rams' contingent is loud and mighty.
BW

Ben Weixlmann · 12:06 AM

★ Spotlighted from Andy Carbaugh

Do you guys think Lasalle needs to win a game to secure their bid in the tournament?

BW

Ben Weixlmann · 12:07 AM

At least one. I think they probably need to win two. The bubble isn't going to be friendly to some teams this year. Better off not giving the committee a reason to leave you on the outside looking in.
HP

Harry Plumer · 12:07 AM

La Salle is such an interesting case. They did nothing out of conference. Their best win was a Villanova team that at the time was losing games to Columbia. Their only top 50 wins came in what could have been a good week.
HP

Harry Plumer · 12:07 AM

It brings me back to what Brad Stevens said on the teleconference today about "when" you play people being so important. It's an underrated factor, and not to be overlooked I think when it comes to La Salle's tournament resume.
BW

Ben Weixlmann · 12:07 AM

I agree with Harry, RE: La Salle. The Explorers had a really good week attached to a "meh" non-conf schedule. I think La Salle needs not only a win, but a win against a solid opponent.
HP

Harry Plumer · 12:08 AM

Now, their RPI is 39. Their record is good. Some of the measurables are there, and in the end that might save them if things go poorly this week.
HP

Harry Plumer · 12:08 AM

Other than Butler-Dayton, who do you like for first-round upsets
HP

Harry Plumer · 12:08 AM

WHOA!? Are you coming out right now and picking Dayton over Butler? Explain yourself.
BW

Ben Weixlmann · 12:08 AM

Did I stutter, Mr. Plumer? Yes, yes I am. I understand the skepticism. Stevens has all this time to prepare. Sure. But I like Benson inside vs. Smith and think Dillard contain Clarke.
HP

Harry Plumer · 12:09 AM

OK, I obviously like Butler. I think they win that game by 10 points
HP

Harry Plumer · 12:09 AM

The argument about talent with Butler is not a good one. They win with inferior talent. To say that Dillard CAN do the job on Clarke and Benson CAN do the job on Smith are one thing, but it hasn't really ahppened too much this season.
BW

Ben Weixlmann · 12:09 AM

That's fair. But Butler's neutral court success was done early in the season against some teams who were perhaps a bit overrated (I'm looking at you, UNC). The IU win was obviously enormous, though.
BW

Ben Weixlmann · 12:09 AM

Not arguing talent. Hell, Butler has superior talent. I just feel as though the matchups favor the Flyers. Don't sleep on Devin Oliver. I like how he's progressing.
BW

Ben Weixlmann · 12:10 AM

Dayton has a big, big fanbase and a sneaky large TV market. There's a lot to like about the Flyers.
BW

Ben Weixlmann · 12:10 AM

★ Spotlighted from Jordan Birnbaum

Anyone else smell a bet between our two hosts?

BW

Ben Weixlmann · 12:10 AM

Ah, Jordan. You're a wise man. Harry and I will have to craft something up. I'll just steal his salary.
HP

Harry Plumer · 12:10 AM

Ha! Loser does a naked lap around Barclays?
BW

Ben Weixlmann · 12:11 AM

Maybe I'll make Harry lick Vautour's bald head.
HP

Harry Plumer · 12:11 AM

I'd rather do the naked lap
HP

Harry Plumer · 12:11 AM

Let's get back to the basketball
BW

Ben Weixlmann · 12:11 AM

★ Spotlighted from Rachael Workman

How far do you really see umass going? In the words of missy elliot, are we gonna be one minute men ?

HP

Harry Plumer · 12:12 AM

Let's just move on.
HP

Harry Plumer · 12:12 AM

Hold on, I'm googling car beds right now.
HP

Harry Plumer · 12:13 AM

According to ChaCha Missy sleeps in a converted Ferrari. Hot Damn!
BW

Ben Weixlmann · 12:13 AM

I ain't lyin', son. Here's the Missy Eliott episode for all you kind folks who want to watch it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GqlYCs_5Ap0 So much swag.
HP

Harry Plumer · 12:14 AM

I agree, by the way on the two-minutemen. That's obviously the most likely scenario.
HP

Harry Plumer · 12:14 AM

★ Spotlighted from Jordan Birnbaum

How do you think the dissolution of the Big East will affect the A10 in the coming years?

BW

Ben Weixlmann · 12:15 AM

It will most certainly affect the A-10. I'll let Harry discuss more in-depth.
HP

Harry Plumer · 12:15 AM

Dumping the fun stuff on me, eh?
HP

Harry Plumer · 12:16 AM

OK Jordan, here's the deal in case you don't already know. Xavier and Butler are as good as gone.
HP

Harry Plumer · 12:16 AM

The prevailing wisdom is that Dayton and SLU aren't far behind. My guess is that happens after next season.
HP

Harry Plumer · 12:17 AM

So that leaves you with: FordhamnDuquesnenGeorge WashingtonnLa SallenRichmondnSt. Joseph’snSt. BonaventurenRhode IslandnVCUnUMass
HP

Harry Plumer · 12:17 AM

Good news is, all of those schools are on the Atlantic Coast and there's 10 of them
HP

Harry Plumer · 12:18 AM

Bad news is that there isn't a whole lot of NCAA Tournament funds between them.
HP

Harry Plumer · 12:18 AM

Worse news is that the expansion options are pretty bleak: George Mason and Davidson seem to be the favorites, with some discussion of others.
BW

Ben Weixlmann · 12:19 AM

Monetarily, however, it's going to be difficult. The TV contract won't be much, and NCAA shares will be significantly less due to less teams getting in and making runs in The Dance.
HP

Harry Plumer · 12:19 AM

So to answer your question more succinctly, the Big East breakup is VERY bad for the A-10.
BW

Ben Weixlmann · 12:20 AM

To contribute a bit, what Harry said is right on point. The league probably won't suffer much in the near term, because talent is still there. VCU, Temple, St. Joe's, La Salle, Richmond are all very solid. UMass as well.
HP

Harry Plumer · 12:20 AM

Temple is gone, bro. Off to the Big Country.
BW

Ben Weixlmann · 12:21 AM

Apologies for typing Temple. Blame Harry for that.
HP

Harry Plumer · 12:21 AM

★ Spotlighted from Andrei Berman

I don't see what Dayton does for the catholic conference...other than give them a non catholic member...are the flyers the de facto affirmative action plan of the new big east?

HP

Harry Plumer · 12:22 AM

Can we agree, though, that the America 12 should be called the Big Country?
BW

Ben Weixlmann · 12:22 AM

If only in an ode to Bryant Reeves.
HP

Harry Plumer · 12:23 AM

And to this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eOgCjTXVnWk
HP

Harry Plumer · 12:23 AM

how many other leagues have a house band AND a theme song by said band. it's really a slam dunk. someone get aresco in here.
BW

Ben Weixlmann · 12:24 AM

That's high quality basketball. AMERICA 12!
HP

Harry Plumer · 12:24 AM

Don't you talk bad about my conference.
HP

Harry Plumer · 12:25 AM

★ Spotlighted from Dan Cutler

The big east womens games is FAR BETTER right now

BW

Ben Weixlmann · 12:25 AM

Women's hoops is on another board. Sorry, y'all.
HP

Harry Plumer · 12:26 AM

OK, so we're in agreement on that.
HP

Harry Plumer · 12:26 AM

Let's move on to something I know we don't agree on.
HP

Harry Plumer · 12:27 AM

The A-10 First Team All-Conference
BW

Ben Weixlmann · 12:27 AM

YES. THANK YOU.
BW

Ben Weixlmann · 12:28 AM

Chaz, get off my First Team, bro.
BW

Ben Weixlmann · 12:28 AM

[/dodges rotten tomatoes]
HP

Harry Plumer · 12:29 AM

Let's just post the team real quick

HP

Harry Plumer · 12:30 AM

First Team All-ConferencenKhalif Wyatt, TUnRamon Galloway, LASnRotnei Clarke, BUnDwayne Evans, SLUnChaz Williams, UM
BW

Ben Weixlmann · 12:30 AM

So, how did you see it, Harry?
HP

Harry Plumer · 12:31 AM

You go first, since you're the one who has the vehement objection to Chaz. I have my own thoughts, but I want you to go first.
BW

Ben Weixlmann · 12:31 AM

OK. First off, Chaz had a very solid year. Following last year, big things were expected. Defenses keyed on him, and he still produces. But did he produce enough for 1st Team consideration? No. No way. Not even close.
BW

Ben Weixlmann · 12:32 AM

I thought VCU's Juvonte Reddic not only should've been on the First Team, but he would've been my third choice behind Wyatt and Evans for POY.
BW

Ben Weixlmann · 12:32 AM

Not my guy. I think it'd be a crime to take him over Evans though.
BW

Ben Weixlmann · 12:33 AM

I'm not an all stats guy, though. I watched enough A-10 ball this year to realize that Reddic absolutely, 100% deserves to be on the team. As does Evans. So does Wyatt. Clarke, too. Chaz? No.
BW

Ben Weixlmann · 12:33 AM

Another qualm I had with Chaz was his play in big games.
BW

Ben Weixlmann · 12:34 AM

I brought this up before, but he only averaged 12 ppg against the top 5 teams in the conference.
BW

Ben Weixlmann · 12:34 AM

Reddic, on the other hand, averaged 18 ppg and 8.8 rpg against the best teams in the league.
HP

Harry Plumer · 12:35 AM

So leading the league in assists BY MORE THAN TWO WHOLE ASSISTS PER GAME is not enough for you?
HP

Harry Plumer · 12:35 AM

2nd in Assist-to-TO ratio.
HP

Harry Plumer · 12:36 AM

★ Spotlighted from Dan Cutler

The kid led the league in assists while having to carry the scoring load for a team that went 9-7 in a loaded A-10 without their best scorer and arguably best defender, I get so frustrated watching him but cant argue his ability to get the team going

HP

Harry Plumer · 12:36 AM

hm. I think if you want to use the stats argument, you have to look at Reddic over Evans. Not to take a shot at your guy or anything.
HP

Harry Plumer · 12:37 AM

I think it would be stupid to have a first team without a guy from the No. 1 team in the league, but if you're going to talk stats, I'm just saying.
HP

Harry Plumer · 12:37 AM

What is UMass record without Chaz?
BW

Ben Weixlmann · 12:38 AM

Haven't thought about it enough. But probably fairly miserable. Not like Trey is going to step in and guide this team...
BW

Ben Weixlmann · 12:38 AM

I just want it to be known that I think Mr. Reddic was a bit more deserving. That's all.
HP

Harry Plumer · 12:39 AM

He is worth more to UMass than Reddic is to VCU. I think ultimately that's why he ended up on the first team.
HP

Harry Plumer · 12:39 AM

Let's take some forum comments about the Chaz issue real quick.
HP

Harry Plumer · 12:40 AM

★ Spotlighted from Andrei Berman

In fairness, Ben might me right. I love Chaz but I'm not sure he's a top 5 guy this year...Kinda disapplointed TV didn't get a third team nod. Kid deserves it

BW

Ben Weixlmann · 12:40 AM

You mean you want to ignore Andy's thoughts on the football score we're seeing in Seton Hall-USF? How dare you.
HP

Harry Plumer · 12:41 AM

I don't want to ignore them. I'm trying to move in a logical order.
HP

Harry Plumer · 12:41 AM

Sorry for being efficient
BW

Ben Weixlmann · 12:42 AM

Thanks, Ken Pom Jr.
BW

Ben Weixlmann · 12:42 AM

You know what? Maybe the A-10 should've just pulled the BS card that the SEC did and place 8 guys on the First Team.
BW

Ben Weixlmann · 12:43 AM

Kidding, of course. That was the dumbest thing I've ever seen.
HP

Harry Plumer · 12:43 AM

OK, Benji we need to make a decision about whether we want to move on or keep talking about Chaz.
BW

Ben Weixlmann · 12:44 AM

Let's move on. I want to talk about something else.
BW

Ben Weixlmann · 12:44 AM

Barclay's....what are you excited for?
BW

Ben Weixlmann · 12:45 AM

Chances we run into Jay-Z? I'm saying 0.02%
HP

Harry Plumer · 12:45 AM

Are you afraid of the brewing UMass mob?
HP

Harry Plumer · 12:46 AM

You can admit if you ate
HP

Harry Plumer · 12:46 AM

are*
HP

Harry Plumer · 12:47 AM

As far as Jay Z goes, you missed your chance. I had a sighting when I was there for media day. He played the night before.
BW

Ben Weixlmann · 12:47 AM

I also want to know if we're going to be seeing shaved-head Plumer or mop-Plumer of your SLU visit?
HP

Harry Plumer · 12:48 AM

MOP? How dare you? It's Flow
HP

Harry Plumer · 12:48 AM

Cutler, back me up on this, you've seen me in person recently.
BW

Ben Weixlmann · 12:49 AM

You know these people? My condolences to the visitors.
HP

Harry Plumer · 12:49 AM

Haha Dan and I have run into each other around town.
HP

Harry Plumer · 12:50 AM

Amherst is slightly smaller than St. Louis
HP

Harry Plumer · 12:50 AM

★ Spotlighted from Rachael Workman

Does everyone down here know that you have to go in the audience tab and listen to people in order to see their comments? Otherwise you're only seeing comments that get overheard, meaning voted up, by other audience members.

BW

Ben Weixlmann · 12:51 AM

Very good point, Rachael. Votes mean we're seeing them. So press like if you're in favor of the comments others are making.
HP

Harry Plumer · 12:51 AM

Rachael is helping, I hope, everyone understand how this works
BW

Ben Weixlmann · 12:52 AM

★ Spotlighted from Chris Davis

Andrew Nicholson was going to be drafted last year regardless. I personally feel that his stock rise a lot during the tournament. Do you think there is an under the radar player that could play himself into the draft?

BW

Ben Weixlmann · 12:52 AM

I don't think there's really any player of that ilk this year. Semaj Christon will be a first-rounder when he comes out after his sophomore year. Otherwise, nada for me in terms of NBA prospects.
HP

Harry Plumer · 12:53 AM

Danny Ferry was courtside for UMass-Butler, so obviously he seems some potential somewhere — though I didn't figure it out right away. Rotnei Clarke? Kam Woods? I don't see it, but then again, I don't get paid to run an NBA team.
HP

Harry Plumer · 12:53 AM

Where do you see Khalif Wyatt's future, Ben?
BW

Ben Weixlmann · 12:54 AM

I like Khalif, but he's not an NBA player. People refer to his game as "old man YMCA". While that can work in college, it won't work in the NBA. He could make a rather healthy living overseas where that kind of ball is preferred.
HP

Harry Plumer · 12:54 AM

I don't see Cutler's comment, can someone promote it
HP

Harry Plumer · 12:54 AM

As they say, there's a country for everyone.
BW

Ben Weixlmann · 12:55 AM

Kam Woods would be a bit of a stretch, but he's the most likely candidate in my opinion as far as those two teams are concerned. Still don't see it either.
BW

Ben Weixlmann · 12:55 AM

And what's even better is only one of "Death and Taxes" will apply to those folks. It's a nice tax-free living overseas.
HP

Harry Plumer · 12:56 AM

I haven't looked at the lines yet, let me try to guess them like Simmons and Cousin Sal.
BW

Ben Weixlmann · 12:56 AM

Go for it.
HP

Harry Plumer · 12:57 AM

UMass -3
BW

Ben Weixlmann · 12:57 AM

Close. UMass is -2.5
HP

Harry Plumer · 12:58 AM

Butler -6.5
BW

Ben Weixlmann · 12:58 AM

Way off. Butler is -3.5
HP

Harry Plumer · 12:59 AM

3.5?!
BW

Ben Weixlmann · 12:59 AM

Yes. 3.5.
HP

Harry Plumer · 1:00 AM

3.5!
BW

Ben Weixlmann · 1:00 AM

Clearly your initial thoughts are Butler's line is way too small.
HP

Harry Plumer · 1:01 AM

Wait, wait.
BW

Ben Weixlmann · 1:01 AM

Let's get them all and then discuss.
BW

Ben Weixlmann · 1:02 AM

What's your UR/Charlotte guess?
HP

Harry Plumer · 1:02 AM

I think Richmond is a stay away, as is Xavier
HP

Harry Plumer · 1:03 AM

I like Richmond -1
HP

Harry Plumer · 1:03 AM

Right. Not enough for me to jump in.
BW

Ben Weixlmann · 1:04 AM

Charlotte, per Vegas, is the least likely team to win the A-10 Tournament.
BW

Ben Weixlmann · 1:04 AM

Richmond -4 or -4.5 at some shops.
HP

Harry Plumer · 1:05 AM

Wow. So Vegas is out on Charlotte
BW

Ben Weixlmann · 1:05 AM

By seed, I like SJU over Xavier
BW

Ben Weixlmann · 1:06 AM

Although, if you ask Vegas, the Hawks are a slight favorite.
HP

Harry Plumer · 1:06 AM

Hold on, the whole point is for us to discuss this
HP

Harry Plumer · 1:07 AM

Quick reminder for our guests — in the forum, the more you like one of your peers comments, the more likely they are to appear in this window. That is the genius of this whole Tawker thing, it's very democratic.
BW

Ben Weixlmann · 1:07 AM

Sorry to toss in a tangent, but Charlotte is going to be damn good once it leaves the A-10. Against mediocre competition, they have some very good freshman. Watch out for the 49ers
BW

Ben Weixlmann · 1:07 AM

I am not. I gave my fair praise to Chazzdiculous.
HP

Harry Plumer · 1:08 AM

Tangents are encouraged. But yea, use the like/dislike buttons in your forum panel people. That's part of why we're here.
HP

Harry Plumer · 1:08 AM

And anything Andrei Berman says, dislike.
BW

Ben Weixlmann · 1:09 AM

So, let's discuss these lines.
HP

Harry Plumer · 1:09 AM

You like Dayton outright though, and we've already covered a little bit of why
BW

Ben Weixlmann · 1:10 AM

So it's likely -175/+155
HP

Harry Plumer · 1:10 AM

Is there a moneyline on that game yet?
BW

Ben Weixlmann · 1:11 AM

Will you be my bookie?
BW

Ben Weixlmann · 1:11 AM

Definitely some value in the Owls at +600.
BW

Ben Weixlmann · 1:12 AM

+600 without having to face SLU until the finals?
BW

Ben Weixlmann · 1:12 AM

No. But -3.5 is -175 at most places.
BW

Ben Weixlmann · 1:13 AM

I think the futures are rather interesting.
BW

Ben Weixlmann · 1:13 AM

For those who don't know, the idea behind futures isn't necessarily to pick a winner, but it's to put yourself in a good position to hedge.
BW

Ben Weixlmann · 1:14 AM

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I actually think VCU is more dangerous in the NCAA Tourney setting when compared to A-10 Tourney.
HP

Harry Plumer · 1:14 AM

Just because people haven't seen them before?
HP

Harry Plumer · 1:15 AM

More than that though, don't you think it depends on the officiating?
BW

Ben Weixlmann · 1:15 AM

Absolutely. VCU fouls on probably every possession, right?
BW

Ben Weixlmann · 1:16 AM

I mean they not only foul, they hack.
BW

Ben Weixlmann · 1:16 AM

★ Spotlighted from Chris Davis

I disagree Ben. I've been saying all year, as personal opinion, that VCU is an absolutely Final 4 contender....at home. On the road, away from their HAVOC crowd I feel they are a different team, NCAA worthy, but not final 4.

BW

Ben Weixlmann · 1:17 AM

I didn't say they'd be a Final 4 team. Ever.
BW

Ben Weixlmann · 1:17 AM

They play to the philosophy that the refs can't call it EVERY time down the floor, and thus create "havoc".
HP

Harry Plumer · 1:18 AM

It's the "we're going to foul you 80 times, but they're only going to call it 20" strategy.
BW

Ben Weixlmann · 1:18 AM

Right. They play an incredibly unique brand of ball.
BW

Ben Weixlmann · 1:19 AM

Not sure I'd buy them as a Sweet 16 team, to be honest.
BW

Ben Weixlmann · 1:19 AM

But I just don't see them winning the A-10 Tourney either.
HP

Harry Plumer · 1:20 AM

Once again, depends on the officials
BW

Ben Weixlmann · 1:20 AM

It's 8:15 here and I haven't had dinner. What else do we want to talk about?
BW

Ben Weixlmann · 1:21 AM

Oh, and my computer has 4% battery. So this will be interesting.
HP

Harry Plumer · 1:21 AM

So there'sthat
HP

Harry Plumer · 1:22 AM

Oh my, are we complaining already?
HP

Harry Plumer · 1:22 AM
