A Triple Crown is insight, but there is controversy! Join Jack Terry and Jennifer Arbuckle as they talk about California Chrome, the horse from the wrong side of the country, as he runs for history with a little help.

JT

Jack Terry · 5:00 PM

And we're off!!
JA

Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 5:00 PM

Mount your ponies!!
JT

Jack Terry · 5:00 PM

Welcome friends and neighbors. Here today to talk about the Triple Crown.
JT

Jack Terry · 5:00 PM

I thought pony mounting was only legal in the deep south...
JA

Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 5:00 PM

You just kind of have to root for California Chrome in the Belmont Stakes this weekend
JA

Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 5:01 PM

deep south...dirty boy
JT

Jack Terry · 5:01 PM

You better believe you do. You know who else is rooting for him? Breathe Right nasal strips.
JA

Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 5:01 PM

OH you know it...how crazy that Breathe Right Nasal Strips ended up as a co-sponser!!!
JT

Jack Terry · 5:02 PM

Are you aware of the controversy that started right after the field of the Belmont Stakes was announced?
JA

Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 5:02 PM

Oh yea, ridiculous!
JA

Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 5:03 PM

If humans can use nasal strips to enhance breathing during sports, why can't a horse?
JT

Jack Terry · 5:03 PM

How were they not going to let California Chrome wear his nasal strip after he wore it in the first two legs of the triple crown?
JT

Jack Terry · 5:03 PM

Exactly. It's just another medical advance.
JA

Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 5:04 PM

I appreciate the fact that they looked into it but to stop California Chrome for racing because of nasal strips was stupid
JA

Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 5:04 PM

Nobody said that Wicked Strong or Tonalist couldn't use them too
JT

Jack Terry · 5:04 PM

and I think it's genius that Breathe Right was smart enough to jump on this. It shows a sense of humor and a wicked smart business savvy.
JA

Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 5:05 PM

I'm glad that was settled quickly though...those Dumb Ass Partners are about to have a triple crown winner on their hands!!
JA

Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 5:05 PM

Marketing genious
JT

Jack Terry · 5:05 PM

Totally. Every horse could wear one. The question is how many will try one (for possibly their first time) tomorrow when they run the Belmont.
JA

Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 5:06 PM

OH, I'm sure trainers of the horses have been testing them out since the controversy
JT

Jack Terry · 5:06 PM

The average attendence for a non-Triple Crown Belmont Stakes is less than 50,000 people. This weekend they're expecting over 120,000!
JA

Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 5:06 PM

Interesting tid-bit about this particular attempt for the triple crown...
JT

Jack Terry · 5:06 PM

They should be testing them. The extra oxygen will come in handy. This is a mile and a half race, longer than most of the races they do.
JA

Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 5:07 PM

Never in the 146 year history of the triple crown, has it been won by a horse NOT Bred in Kentucky!!
JT

Jack Terry · 5:07 PM

and that tid bit is???
JA

Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 5:07 PM

Even Seattle Slew, triple crown winner in 1977 was foaled in Kentucky
JT

Jack Terry · 5:08 PM

I know and I think the whole story behind California Chrome is awesome. Combined the owners spent $10,000 for the mare and sire. The latest price being mentioned to buy a half share of California Chrome is $10 million! All for a west coast horse!
JT

Jack Terry · 5:08 PM

The Kentucky blue grass blue bloods are going nuts!
JA

Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 5:08 PM

A really, really fast West Coast horse
JT

Jack Terry · 5:09 PM

I honestly can't wait, and neither can a lot of people.
JA

Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 5:09 PM

Another nifty fact...the Belmont Stakes are considered the "Test of the Champion"
JA

Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 5:09 PM

Because it's the longest of the Triple Crown races...a full mile and 1/2
JT

Jack Terry · 5:09 PM

There's a lot of speculation that more people will watch the race for the Triple Crown than will watch Lebron James play in the NBA Finals the next night.
JA

Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 5:10 PM

That's 1/4 mile longer than the Derby and the Preakness
JT

Jack Terry · 5:10 PM

Not only is it the full mile and a half, The Preakness stakes, the last race most of these horses ran, is the shortest of the three.
JA

Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 5:10 PM

Lebron and the heat have already done it once. The Triple Crown hasn't been won since 1978
JA

Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 5:11 PM

In fact, only 11 horses have won the Triple Crown in the entire history of the competition...since 1919
JT

Jack Terry · 5:12 PM

I remember the last good shot. I forget the horse but he was so far ahead on the home stretch that the jockey couldn't keep him from turning his head looking for all of his friends he'd been running with. This slowed him down, another horse blew by h
JA

Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 5:12 PM

The odds today are definitely in favor of California Chrome...3-5
JT

Jack Terry · 5:12 PM

3-5? Wow!!
JA

Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 5:12 PM

Closest second in the odds is Wicked Strong at 6-1
JA

Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 5:13 PM

Can't make any money with those kind of odds
JT

Jack Terry · 5:13 PM

I always like to throw a few dollars on the long shot, just because with thoroughbreds you never know.
JA

Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 5:13 PM

There are a few horses you might look at then...30-1 and such
JT

Jack Terry · 5:14 PM

Those are my type of horses!
JA

Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 5:14 PM

I think we're going to witness a historical Triple Crown won this weekend
JT

Jack Terry · 5:14 PM

Let's get back to breathe right for a minute. Even though they are probably spending a pretty penny to run their ads, they are going to get one of the best returns on their investment because so much of the talk, especially if California Chrome wins,
JT

Jack Terry · 5:16 PM

will be what the effect of the nasal strip was and how that will change racing in the future.
JA

Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 5:16 PM

I believe you meant "when" California Chrome wins
JT

Jack Terry · 5:16 PM

Hey, it's been a long time! That's why they run the race!
JT

Jack Terry · 5:16 PM

Personally I hope he does, partially because I want to see a Triple Crown winner that I remember seeing and partially because of the back story.
JA

Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 5:16 PM

If California Chrome doesn't win, the racing world will be on its heels. He'
JA

Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 5:16 PM

is the hands down favorite
JT

Jack Terry · 5:16 PM

It goes back to that length though. Some horses are built for the 1.5 miles.
JT

Jack Terry · 5:17 PM

That's why each year regardless of if there is a triple crown threat or not, you see some horses entered that didn't run both of the first two legs.
JT

Jack Terry · 5:17 PM

and in some cases they didn't run either.
JA

Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 5:17 PM

Matterhorn, at 30-1 is one of the strongest distance horses in the pack
JT

Jack Terry · 5:18 PM

What, do you have a copy of the Racing Form next to you?!
JA

Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 5:18 PM

Maybe....
JT

Jack Terry · 5:18 PM

Ha!
JA

Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 5:18 PM

I like to play the horses a little...this time of year
JT

Jack Terry · 5:18 PM

Regardless of who wins, this is what horse racing needs. A shot in the arm and a lot of attention. Unfortunately it's a dying sport.
JT

Jack Terry · 5:19 PM

Hopefully California Chrome and his magic nasal strip can bring the Triple Crown home to the west coast.
JA

Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 5:19 PM

The distance is the one consideration when betting on California Chrome...despite winning all 7 of his past races...this is the longest
JT

Jack Terry · 5:19 PM

and in doing so keep people interested and draw in some new fans.
JT

Jack Terry · 5:19 PM

By far his longest.
JA

Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 5:19 PM

If you watched the Preakness...he hung back until the last turn...can he endure?
JT

Jack Terry · 5:20 PM

Most winners do hang. I think Secretariat, with his abnormally large heart, was one of the few wire to wire winners.
JA

Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 5:20 PM

I remember that...ooops, no I've seen video...lol
JT

Jack Terry · 5:21 PM

All right, it's time to put the horses in the gate and the betting windows are closing. You picking California Chrome?
JT

Jack Terry · 5:21 PM

And last question: what's the flower of the Belmont Stakes?
JA

Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 5:21 PM

I think so...I love the historical implication of a horse from Cali winning the Triple Crown...
JT

Jack Terry · 5:21 PM

Kentucky is roses, Preakness is black-eyed susans
JA

Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 5:21 PM

carnation?
JT

Jack Terry · 5:22 PM

You asking or telling?
JA

Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 5:22 PM

I'm trying to remember...I'm askin
JT

Jack Terry · 5:23 PM

You are correct! So remember folks you heard it hear first: California Chrome wins the Belmont Stakes and the Triple Crown.
JA

Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 5:23 PM

I'm with you Jack...California Chrome and a history making Triple Crown!!
JT

Jack Terry · 5:24 PM

See you in the winner's circle!
JA

Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 5:24 PM

Have a great afternoon, Jack...I'll be watching the race!! See you then!!
