Comedian Lee Camp and Rooftop Revolutionaries' lead singer Eleanor Goldfield cover the ins and outs of digital activism in their weekly "Moment of Clarity" tawk.

Hey everyone!
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:30 AM

Stoked to see the conversation is already under way!
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:30 AM

Hey everyone!
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:30 AM

Thanks for coming and please post this link on your FB and shit so that others will join us!
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:31 AM

This turns out to be an important day to talk about this subject because there was a major blow to net neutrality today. For those of you who don't know, net neutrality is what has allowed the information revolution to take place.
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:31 AM

Without it, providers (like Verizon) can speed up or slow down the traffic of anything they want. So they will inevitably slow down traffic to activist sites and speed up traffic to, say, Walmart.com. -
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:31 AM

Michael Copps, former FCC commissioner and now adviser for Common Cause: "Without prompt corrective action by the Commission to reclassify broadband, this awful ruling will serve as a sorry memorial to the corporate abrogation of free speech."
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:32 AM

So basically what Eleanor and I are saying is that we need to wake everyone up about net neutrality or else online activism is dead.
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:32 AM

In a nutshell, yes
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:32 AM

Here's the article about the courts ruling against it. Read this later - n http://thinkprogress.org/justice/2014/01/14/3160231/federal-court-deals-blow-open-internet-access/
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:32 AM

Of course, there was little to no fanfare about this on corporate media.
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:32 AM

★ Spotlighted from Jordan Birnbaum

I bet they'd slow down this Tawk!

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:32 AM

Jordan's right - they would totally slow down this talk.
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:33 AM

However, something that feeds into digital activism on the whole is the presence of alternative media sites reporting on this sort of news
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:33 AM

I'm convinced we could get people angry about ending net neutrality if we just called it "slow porn"
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:33 AM

Ha!
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:33 AM

ending net neutrality = slow porn
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:33 AM

★ Spotlighted from Lucy Dyer

they may take away our internet...but they'll never take away our activism!! grrr!

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:33 AM

You clearly know how to reach people, Lee
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:33 AM

damn straight!
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:34 AM

★ Spotlighted from Stanley Ulch

does that apply to Canada as well?

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:34 AM

I don't know - maybe someone else knows about canada
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:34 AM

I don't know about Canada but I wouldn't be surprised if that was in the works as well
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:35 AM

as we've learned with the NSA - the ruling elite will use any means at their disposal to control the masses - so if we take away net neutrality, it will be used for control
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:35 AM

★ Spotlighted from Katie Klabusich

@Lee just tell people over 30 that porn is going to go back to that really long, grainy pictured slow download format...

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:35 AM

★ Spotlighted from Pat F

Canada's internet is among the worst in 1st world counties. Slow, and way overpriced.

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:36 AM

★ Spotlighted from Helena Kirby

On a positive note, this proves they're shakin' in their moon boots....utterly terrified of the impact we can have around the world with each other.

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:36 AM

So maybe people can start listing their favorite forms of online activism and we can discuss from there
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:36 AM

I think over the past few years we've seen how amazingly useful it's been
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:36 AM

@Helena, it certainly does show that digital activism is a powerful tool
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:36 AM

The Arab Spring alone would not have been what it was without digital platforms
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:36 AM

Everything from Occupy to stopping SOPA and PIPA to stopping war with Syria...
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:36 AM

And just yesterday, the Kelly Thomas verdict flooded twitter and FB with action
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:37 AM

★ Spotlighted from Jordan Birnbaum

This is just as bad as Christie creating unnecessary traffic on a bridge. It's Verizon creating unnecessary traffic on the Net.

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:37 AM

Jordan! That's a great idea. We should compare it to Christie!
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:37 AM

I'm totally stealing that.
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:37 AM

★ Spotlighted from Blake Ian

BLAME CANADA!

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:37 AM

That is a damn good analogy
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:37 AM

★ Spotlighted from Lucy Dyer

@Jordan - maybe they'll get Christie to sit on the internet cable....

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:37 AM

No Eleanor, it's mine now!
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:37 AM

Ha!
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:38 AM

★ Spotlighted from Michael Micklow

There is also the increasing possibility that another internet will be created for the elites, one that will have the bandwitdth equivalent to Christie

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:38 AM

★ Spotlighted from Katie Klabusich

I think my favorite online activism is networking. It's so much easier now to get information from the people doing the work and finding ways to plug in from those who are already involved.

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:38 AM

Don't worry Lee - I'm not planning on starting any standup
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:38 AM

Michael, they don't want their own internet. They want to take away the people's ability to communicate easily.
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:38 AM

★ Spotlighted from comet demuta

i encourage lots online activism, but being a sea fairing soul and the urgent need to look after the ocean and her creatures i focus on that.

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:39 AM

★ Spotlighted from Daniel Jackson

I know from my experience posting eye opening events has opened the eyes of all my friends, now they are posting stuff as well, the tiniest pebble can produce a tidal wave if used properly.

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:39 AM

★ Spotlighted from Michael Micklow

Lee, true.. but those ya know, they prolly want their cake and to eat it too!

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:39 AM

And that's what makes it so useful - the ability to not just preach to a choir but engage with new people
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:39 AM

Michael - the elite actually unveiled their own news site just this week - headed by Huffington, called World Post
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:39 AM

★ Spotlighted from Helena Kirby

I enjoy working with movements on things such as "TwitterStorm" and with online programs such as "ThunderClap" to reach out to the masses.

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:40 AM

What have people found most effective? Twitter storms? FB viral memes? All these things are great.
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:40 AM

Twitter is amazing because the "elite" actually have to see what you say to them.
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:40 AM

★ Spotlighted from Michael Micklow

Really?! I didn't see that Lee. THey should have went with Fluffington Post.

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:41 AM

And of course groups like Anonymous
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:41 AM

And the worldwide wave of action
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:41 AM

I think Anonymous and Wikileaks scares the powers that be more than anything else.
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:41 AM

★ Spotlighted from Katie Klabusich

YES, @Lee! It's easier to open people's eyes to new issues with social media. I've had people respond to things in my feed about reproductive justice with "Wait, what country is this about?" because they didn't know & then they want to get involved.

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:41 AM

★ Spotlighted from Daniel Jackson

I believe all forms together make a monster they are afraid of...hence all the legislation to limit the internet like china and N Korea.

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:41 AM

That's really powerful
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:42 AM

★ Spotlighted from Dave Pallister

I am also affiliated with The Venus Project doing both online and real life activism AND I heard Occupy is coming back to Nottingham on Feb. 2

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:42 AM

★ Spotlighted from Helena Kirby

Reposting videos such as your own @lee camp and @eleanorgoldfield as well as consistently having outlets such as your Moment of Clarity, RT, Breaking The Set, James Corbett, BuzzSaw, and many more to keep up to date.

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:42 AM

★ Spotlighted from Brad Davis

There are gaps in online activism as some are starting to see it only as attempts to get traffic or simply a reaction. I wish there was more of a cohesiveness in how it is presented.

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:42 AM

There are hubs that attempt that cohesiveness, Brad
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:42 AM

Brad has a good point - sometimes online activism can be pulled to extremism and conspiracy because that gets the most reaction.
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:43 AM

Of course, it is still very new so it's hard to wrangle this behemoth
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:43 AM

Also things like "net neutrality" get no reaction because they sound boring and don't have panda bears involved.
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:43 AM

★ Spotlighted from Michael Micklow

Agreed. Anon and WL are an example of how individuals really good at coding, outside of the financial oligarchy, can crack the secrecy and say "fuck that." that is unprecedented, till now.

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:43 AM

★ Spotlighted from phil Christophers

yes sharing lee camp videos that stirs it up

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:43 AM

But some sites do a pretty good job of bringing some organization to digital activism
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:43 AM

like change.org
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:43 AM

crowdvoice.org is another good one
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:44 AM

★ Spotlighted from Brad Davis

True Eleanor... I think the SOPA campaign last year was beautifully orchestrated

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:44 AM

★ Spotlighted from Jordan Birnbaum

If it weren't for online activism, I would never have even known about the Toilet Paper Partnership, I mean, Trans Pacific Partnership.

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:44 AM

Brad - yes, the SOPA campaign was perfect
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:44 AM

★ Spotlighted from Lucy Dyer

its all very well posting stuff on twitter or Facebook, and you may get some likes and rt's BUT does it really change anyones mind? for some maybe, but for the vast majority,i would say no. and that is the difficult part

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:45 AM

And Aaron Schwarz was essentially murdered for it. That shows how much this scares the plutocrats
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:45 AM

★ Spotlighted from Steven Geary

I think it goes in waves. Not everyone is on the same page, but sooner or later something get's through and bam pow! It's on.

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:45 AM

It's a question of doing digital activism using twitter and facebook and other outlets, not just posting a random tweet now and then.
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:45 AM

And working together with other groups and organizations online
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:45 AM

★ Spotlighted from Michael Micklow

Well played Jordan. Well played. TPP is a real threat, being fasttracked whilst, ya know, we argue ad naseum about a bridge that may or may not have been closed for political reasons.

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:46 AM

Exactly. Gotta love corporate media
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:46 AM

★ Spotlighted from Peri Lane

Lucy, some might not change minds, but in a lot of cases, people are entirely unaware of things, or thinking backwards. I know many cases of people having their eyes opened -- online.

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:46 AM

★ Spotlighted from Helena Kirby

@eleanorgoldfield That's what the Common Ground movement believes in as well...brining everyone together, putting our opinions and differences aside to become one bigger unit than many individual groups.

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:46 AM

And the truth is sometimes we need to view Activism as work. It can't all be fun and games.
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:46 AM

Yes, Helena
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:46 AM

Those twitter storms are really great #FindTheCommonGround
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:46 AM

Getting the message out can take some time and effort that's not always fun.
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:46 AM

but it can be fun too!
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:47 AM

I mean here we are digitally discussing activism and we could all be sitting there with no pants drinking hot chocolate
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:47 AM

Pat, seems like you're the only one having the issue right now. But yes, probably NSA
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:47 AM

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:47 AM

★ Spotlighted from Michael Micklow

Eleanor, this may have already been stated, but I wonder if there needs to be a coordination between digital and physical, artistic expressions, like what you and Lee have been doing. We need to replicate that model!!

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:47 AM

Michael - yes!
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:47 AM

Eleanor - when is that Tawk?
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:47 AM

★ Spotlighted from Brad Davis

@Lee - so true...I work with Zeitgeist and you think that a movie with 20M views would be known in my local town..

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:47 AM

Just like the live show or performance will never die, physical activism can't either
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:47 AM

Ha - that's the next tawk, clearly :)
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:48 AM

But back to Michael's point - the two must go hand in hand.
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:48 AM

Hot chocolate now, screaming on stage later
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:48 AM

Physical activism is equally important. These things have to work together like that fist in the movie "Mandela" about that guy, can't remember who it was.
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:48 AM

It's a balance. And art is a tremendously effective way of engaging people, from all areas geographically, socially, politically and economically
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:48 AM

Speaking of activism working together, I want to again mention my favorite online activist plan of late - the World Wide Wave of Action
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:49 AM

http://waveofaction.org
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:49 AM

That is a great site

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:49 AM

★ Spotlighted from Brad Davis

I think physical activism and digital can be coordinated to go hand-in-hand

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:49 AM

Sites like that one that provide digital activism and ways to act in the physical world are, I think, the most effective
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:49 AM

It's a plan to coordinate mass nonviolent protest of many stripes beginning on April 4th
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:49 AM

and going until July 4th
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:50 AM

★ Spotlighted from Michael Micklow

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:50 AM

Sophia - that is one of the many things planned. There are all kinds of stunts, etc.
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:51 AM

Yes Lucy - and that is the best blend of activism
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:51 AM

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:51 AM

Michael, we have discussed a joint tour!
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:51 AM

Scheduling gets in the way for now.
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:51 AM

But a tour like that is a great idea
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:52 AM

And what Free & Equal are doing in May with the United We Stand fest
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:52 AM

Yes, United We Stand might have a college tour

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:54 AM

They're creative activism
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:54 AM

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:57 AM

Creativity and thinking outside the box, outside of socially acceptable paradigms is a sort of personal evolution that will lend itself to social and political change

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 1:00 AM

I think doing medical makes sense. Very few people feel that you were responsible for "wracking up medical bills" and so that is more able to cross lines than credit card debt.

Yeah. Career issues are a big problem. I recommend making yourself a couple FB groups; it takes a little bit of time, but is worth it. That way you can share to a subset of your friends.
