Two models discuss various diets and cleanses.

EA

Emilie Adams · 10:00 PM

Hi Olanna, are you here?
EA

Emilie Adams · 10:00 PM

Hi Olanna, are you here?
EA

Emilie Adams · 10:02 PM

I am going to give out a disclaimer from the beginning. We are not doctors. A lot of these fad diets and cleanses were done when we were young and didn't know what we were doing. Since then I have studied holistic nutrition and Ayurveda
EA

Emilie Adams · 10:02 PM

but I am by no means an expert

What's the deal with week long juice cleanses?? I'm a little scared of them, like they could be doing more harm than good.

EA

Emilie Adams · 10:03 PM

Trey, people believe by doing juice cleanses that they give their digestive track a break from the harder work of breaking down dairy, wheat and meat
OT

Olanna Taskey · 10:03 PM

I am here!
EA

Emilie Adams · 10:04 PM

I think if you are careful with the juice cleanse you do that they are perfectly safe. You just need to find one that has balanced vitamins, nutrients and actually has protein of some sort
EA

Emilie Adams · 10:04 PM

Hi Olanna
EA

Emilie Adams · 10:05 PM

I personally have had good results doing juice cleanses. I sometimes do them as a way to get back on track with healthier eating, say after the holidays when I feel i have indulged a little too much Ha ha
OT

Olanna Taskey · 10:05 PM

Hi Emilie! Hi Trey! Yes, juice cleanses are poplar these days! I would only experiment with juices if you felt it was healthy for you. Like Emilie says, you would have to be careful you are getting the correct nutrients!
EA

Emilie Adams · 10:06 PM

So Olanna, what should we start with?
EA

Emilie Adams · 10:07 PM

Between the two of us Olanna and I have done almost every fad diet or cleanse that exists. I have often dragged her into them. For me it is some sort of experiment and test of will. Ha Ha!!
OT

Olanna Taskey · 10:07 PM

How many juice cleanses have you tried Emilie ?
EA

Emilie Adams · 10:08 PM

Wow, I have no idea Olanna. A lot!!
EA

Emilie Adams · 10:08 PM

I don't know if you would call it a juice cleanse, but the Master Cleanse is my most hated
OT

Olanna Taskey · 10:09 PM

Yes, Emilie has talked me into doing just about everything. I was always enthusiastic to try new things, so I was her diet wing woman.
EA

Emilie Adams · 10:09 PM

I mean really, I can't get behind drinking spicy lemon water and call it nutritious at all.
OT

Olanna Taskey · 10:10 PM

Ha Ha! True. I suppose if you just drank Arnold Palmers for 3 weeks without eating, you would also be skinny.
EA

Emilie Adams · 10:10 PM

My favorite juice cleanse is the Blueprint cleanse, mainly because i love the green juice
EA

Emilie Adams · 10:10 PM

True Olanna
EA

Emilie Adams · 10:10 PM

That cleanse is crazy
EA

Emilie Adams · 10:10 PM

I could see doing it for a day or two as a fast if that is your thing, but not 21 days as the book suggests
OT

Olanna Taskey · 10:11 PM

I did the master cleanse with two of my friends a couple years ago, we filmed it, it was funny.
EA

Emilie Adams · 10:11 PM

So, how this all started was that Olanna and I were living together in Paris as young(er) models
EA

Emilie Adams · 10:12 PM

We were both thin and didn't have any issues with weight, but were surrounded by a business with an obsession with dieting
EA

Emilie Adams · 10:12 PM

It's sort of like a pack mentality. It just felt like we were suppose to be cleansing and doing these diets
EA

Emilie Adams · 10:13 PM

Our first team diet was the Cabbage Soup diet. In this case Olanna introduced this particularly gassy diet
OT

Olanna Taskey · 10:13 PM

Exactly. It felt like because everyone was dieting and skinny, we had to be too. I am sure many girls feel that way when they look around or on tv and in the magazines.
EA

Emilie Adams · 10:13 PM

Ha Ha!!
EA

Emilie Adams · 10:14 PM

This is a diet based on a cabbage soup recipe that you eat as much of as you want for seven days
EA

Emilie Adams · 10:15 PM

then on each day you are allowed to eat something along with the soup. For example day one you eat fruit, day two vegetables, day three you eat fruits, vegetables and a baked potato and so on
EA

Emilie Adams · 10:15 PM

Yes, there is complete society pressure to diet. Its everywhere we look
EA

Emilie Adams · 10:16 PM

★ Spotlighted from Blake Ian

I did the Blue Print on Emilie's suggestion and loved it! - And I agree, there is NO WAY the Master Cleanse is good for you!

EA

Emilie Adams · 10:16 PM

Blueprint Juice is yummy, right Blake?!
OT

Olanna Taskey · 10:17 PM

We did the cabbage soup so many times, with some many friends, all of us eating cabbage soup for weeks. The house smelled like cabbage.
EA

Emilie Adams · 10:17 PM

So Olanna and I cabbage souped. Did it work? I guess it actually kind of does. Do I feel its healthy? Honestly, I think it's a little nutritionally void
EA

Emilie Adams · 10:17 PM

and it gives you wicked gas!!! Do not do this diet in the beginning of a relationship!!
OT

Olanna Taskey · 10:18 PM

True, honestly, when you really think about it, realistically, if you ONLY ate, chicken noodle soup for 3 weeks, that's it, a healthy version of it, you too would also loose some weight…. and smell of chicken ;)
EA

Emilie Adams · 10:18 PM

Yeah, but you'd need low sodium chicken soup
EA

Emilie Adams · 10:19 PM

What was our next crazy cleanse kick?
EA

Emilie Adams · 10:19 PM

Dr. Perricone?
OT

Olanna Taskey · 10:19 PM

But for some reason people liked the idea of cabbage soup. Perhaps some will argue that cabbage has digestive advantages, or nutrition.
EA

Emilie Adams · 10:20 PM

Cabbage soup has very little calories. It's not sustainable and your body definitely eats muscle
OT

Olanna Taskey · 10:20 PM

But we totally fell for the cabbage soup idea.
EA

Emilie Adams · 10:20 PM

If you think of your daily calorie intake on cabbage soup it just isn't enough.
EA

Emilie Adams · 10:20 PM

That said Ive probably done it a dozen times!! Ha ha!!
EA

Emilie Adams · 10:21 PM

It is very easy for me to just eat what I'm told and that is probably part of the draw of these diets for me
OT

Olanna Taskey · 10:21 PM

I think when you are younger, you have less concern as to how something will effect you.
EA

Emilie Adams · 10:21 PM

That's true Olanna
EA

Emilie Adams · 10:22 PM

So next we did the Perricone Prescription, right?
OT

Olanna Taskey · 10:22 PM

We saw so many models with eating problems.
EA

Emilie Adams · 10:23 PM

The Perricone diet is actually a skin diet. Personally this is still a favorite of mine because the book makes perfect sense to me
OT

Olanna Taskey · 10:23 PM

Yes, the Perricone diet! Invented my Dr. Perricone. This one makes me laugh…
EA

Emilie Adams · 10:24 PM

He talks about how your body processes food in the book and how eating certain ways create an inflammatory response in your body. This inflammation causes aging in all parts of your body including your skin
OT

Olanna Taskey · 10:24 PM

It is my favorite too, not to mention he has an AMAZING skincare line at Sephora http://www.sephora.com/search/search.jsp?keyword=perricone I use it all the time! I am obsessed!
EA

Emilie Adams · 10:25 PM

The premise is that you cut out inflammatory foods and eat differently, always starting with your protein first and being sure to include fatty acids like salmon.
EA

Emilie Adams · 10:25 PM

and you eat TONS of salmon!!
OT

Olanna Taskey · 10:25 PM

The Perricone diet makes me want to grab the nearest fish I can see and smother it on my face.
EA

Emilie Adams · 10:25 PM

it totally works
EA

Emilie Adams · 10:26 PM

ever since I read that book I have been on a modified Perricone diet. I don't eat salmon every meal, but I do eat protein first and try not to eat too many inflammatory foods
OT

Olanna Taskey · 10:27 PM

The amount of fish oils you begin to eat on the Perricone Diet improves your digestion and bodily functions. Our skin was absolutely glowing and radiant. You just have to get used to eating lots of fish and vegetables.
OT

Olanna Taskey · 10:28 PM

Me too, I have absolutely incorporated the Perricone idea to my daily diet.
EA

Emilie Adams · 10:28 PM

I substitute chicken for some of the fish because too much fish isn't good either
EA

Emilie Adams · 10:28 PM

especially because of the toxins in the water
OT

Olanna Taskey · 10:28 PM

True, experts say too much fish isn't good either.
EA

Emilie Adams · 10:29 PM

My next diet came from the book "Skinny Bitch" which was written by two women in the fashion business
OT

Olanna Taskey · 10:29 PM

http://www.skinnybitch.net
OT

Olanna Taskey · 10:30 PM

I haven't read the book Emilie, what is it about?
EA

Emilie Adams · 10:30 PM

I can't even remember much about that one other than that it was fairly offensive if you weren't skinny and it was very vegan.
EA

Emilie Adams · 10:30 PM

They suggest eating a lot of soy products which I am totally against
EA

Emilie Adams · 10:31 PM

They say things like, "If you're fat and you're drinking a soda you need to slap yourself."
EA

Emilie Adams · 10:31 PM

things like that.
EA

Emilie Adams · 10:32 PM

It's written in what tries to be a light funny way, but I can see how some could be offended by it. I have it here somewhere. Shall I send it to you?
OT

Olanna Taskey · 10:32 PM

I agree, soy is not as good as it is perceived to be.
OT

Olanna Taskey · 10:32 PM

I think if you ever start ingesting something new at an alarming rate you are bound to set off your system, and that can have terrible ramifications.
EA

Emilie Adams · 10:32 PM

soy is very genetically processed and overly processed
OT

Olanna Taskey · 10:33 PM

Experts say soy contains higher levels of estrogen, and that isn't good when it is in every meal or snack.
EA

Emilie Adams · 10:33 PM

genetically modified i meant
EA

Emilie Adams · 10:33 PM

soy also throws off your thyroid function
OT

Olanna Taskey · 10:34 PM

People these days seems concerned over gluten free thing and gluten free that, however I wonder how many of those people are reading the labels and finding out what it ACTUALLY is instead of gluten. Is that good for you? How do you find out?
OT

Olanna Taskey · 10:34 PM

many gluten free products are made with soy, or corn, or even rice.
OT

Olanna Taskey · 10:35 PM

In my experience rice is far more easier to digest, but someone else may be different.
EA

Emilie Adams · 10:36 PM

Yeah, but if you read the perricone book he says gluten is hard to digest. I actually have two other books that say the same and they are my top three diet books.
EA

Emilie Adams · 10:37 PM

they are called "Dr Joshi's Holistic Detox" and "Eating Well for Optimum Health"
OT

Olanna Taskey · 10:38 PM

I used to eat gluten free things. It is helpful at times when the gluten may be creating an adverse reaction on your body. Some people are more sensitive to it. The only way you will learn is if you try different things.
EA

Emilie Adams · 10:38 PM

They are both anti large amounts of glutenous food
EA

Emilie Adams · 10:38 PM

But they don't say to trade them in for soy, rice, etc. They say to eat clean proteins and fruits and veg
EA

Emilie Adams · 10:38 PM

Which is honestly the only really smart diet
OT

Olanna Taskey · 10:39 PM

Most of our gluten products have been loaded with preservatives and different ingredients that are not good for our bodies. Cutting out anything processed definitely helps, not just gluten.
EA

Emilie Adams · 10:39 PM

That is why the Paleo Diet is such a big thing too. A lot of my personal trainer friends eat Paleo
OT

Olanna Taskey · 10:39 PM

There is also a difference between gluten and wheat.
EA

Emilie Adams · 10:40 PM

Yes, because gluten is not only in wheat
EA

Emilie Adams · 10:41 PM

its also in barley and rye, which are in the wheat family
OT

Olanna Taskey · 10:41 PM

Gluten is the protein found in many grains including wheat, rye, barley, spelt and oats.
EA

Emilie Adams · 10:41 PM

Gluten is what gives elasticity to breads
OT

Olanna Taskey · 10:42 PM

If you have Celiacs disease even a small amount of gluten is harmful. It damages the surface of the small intestine resulting in poor absorption of nutrients (protein, fat, vitamins and minerals) which are necessary for good health.
EA

Emilie Adams · 10:43 PM

it is a protein that is used in all sorts of things from shampoo to snack products
EA

Emilie Adams · 10:44 PM

It would be hard to have Celiac Disease. I have a couple of friends with it. They have to buy really specific skin products
EA

Emilie Adams · 10:44 PM

So Olanna, what other diets and cleanses have you done?
OT

Olanna Taskey · 10:45 PM

Eating gluten free is not easy in cities that don't offer abundant choices in food.
OT

Olanna Taskey · 10:46 PM

Well, one of my favorite diets that we laugh about! The French diet! Why is it that when you are in France, you can eat cheese, bread, chocolate cake and espresso and be thin and glamorous?
EA

Emilie Adams · 10:46 PM

that is true Olanna, but if you stay away from bread and snacks it's not that hard. Shop the perimeter of the store. Fruits, veg, protein, etc. Stay OUT of the middle of the store!! That is where all the packaged processed foods are found
EA

Emilie Adams · 10:47 PM

Because in france the portions are sensible and their foods aren't full of toxins
EA

Emilie Adams · 10:47 PM

or hormones
OT

Olanna Taskey · 10:48 PM

A friend had a great idea one day, they said 'why don't supermarkets hang big mirrors in the chip lane, the cereal lane, the candy lane, the ice cream lane?' If they did, you wouldn't buy all the junk you do! But then, they wouldn't sell it.
EA

Emilie Adams · 10:48 PM

What goes into our food in this country is disgraceful. What is most upsetting is how expensive it is to eat healthy foods
EA

Emilie Adams · 10:49 PM

True. Actually, I have two pictures of myself on the fridge in a bikini looking hot that keeps me motivated
OT

Olanna Taskey · 10:49 PM

Luckily, it seems to be getting better. Stores are making healthy options more available, the competition is rising and the costs are lowering.
EA

Emilie Adams · 10:49 PM

I had a baby 11 months ago and still have a few baby pounds left over
EA

Emilie Adams · 10:49 PM

Yes, but if you want to eat organic the prices are still high
EA

Emilie Adams · 10:50 PM

and in NY? It's crazy!!
OT

Olanna Taskey · 10:50 PM

I also think if you look at yourself in a kind way, feel good, eat things that make you feel better, you will be ahead of the game!
EA

Emilie Adams · 10:50 PM

I spend a fortune every time I go to the store. I just don't want to feed my kids all those hormones, antibiotics and pesticides. I just believe in my soul that it isn't god for you
OT

Olanna Taskey · 10:51 PM

Where do you shop in New York?
EA

Emilie Adams · 10:51 PM

good, not god
EA

Emilie Adams · 10:51 PM

I shop a lot at whole foods and I order from fresh direct
OT

Olanna Taskey · 10:51 PM

I agree. Who likes to eat pesticides? It's like pouring some bug spray on your salad.
EA

Emilie Adams · 10:52 PM

Yes, you have to just be kind to yourself and ask yourself if that food choice is going to help your body or hinder it.
OT

Olanna Taskey · 10:52 PM

I shop at Whole Foods too. I find they have such creative foods and it always inspires me to cook or try new things.
EA

Emilie Adams · 10:52 PM

I ask myself that a lot when I'm feeling in a rut of less that optimal eating
OT

Olanna Taskey · 10:53 PM

Whole Foods can be expensive because they offer rare vegetables, new sauces, lovely skin creams and baby products, but if you shop wisely like anywhere else in your life, you can come out with some great items!
EA

Emilie Adams · 10:53 PM

I baked some kale chips before we started this chat. I discovered them recently. I resisted them for so long because they were so popular
EA

Emilie Adams · 10:54 PM

but I baked some for my daughter. She hardly eats anything green which is so frustrating. Well,I baked the kale chips and she ate half a cookie sheet of them!! Major break through
OT

Olanna Taskey · 10:54 PM

I had a delicious bowl of penne pasta last night with a light vodka sauce. It was delicious!
EA

Emilie Adams · 10:54 PM

so now I do them about once a week. It's so easy and they really are yummy
EA

Emilie Adams · 10:55 PM

Actually, I am about to do a three day juice cleanse.
OT

Olanna Taskey · 10:55 PM

I like to eat like that when I know the restaurant is amazing and fresh. When you learn how to eat you start to develop a great taste palette. You begin to taste the quality of food not quantity.
EA

Emilie Adams · 10:55 PM

I think that is a nice way to reset your eating if you feel like you have been a little off track
OT

Olanna Taskey · 10:56 PM

That sounds like a great kid snack! Way to go!
EA

Emilie Adams · 10:56 PM

I love the kale chips now
OT

Olanna Taskey · 10:56 PM

Yes, a bit of awareness to your diet can end up making you feel SO GOOD!
OT

Olanna Taskey · 10:57 PM

I used to like kale chips, but I am kinda over them, now they are everywhere, I am drowning in kale. Next thing you know, there will be kale shampoo.
EA

Emilie Adams · 10:57 PM

All you do is cut the ribs out of the kale, toss them in a bowl with some olive oil to coat them, sprinkle on some seasoning and bake them at 300 degrees for 9-12 minutes depending on the type of kale you use
EA

Emilie Adams · 10:57 PM

watch them though, because they burn quickly
OT

Olanna Taskey · 10:58 PM

I guess there already is kale shampoo http://www.amazon.com/Kale-Naturals-Sport-Daily-Shampoo/dp/B00AJB2LQG Ha Ha!
EA

Emilie Adams · 10:58 PM

I like to indulge in rich foods sometimes too. I don't think there is anything wrong with that. In fact I think its good for your spirit. The key is moderation and an overall healthy lifestyle
OT

Olanna Taskey · 10:59 PM

And quality of food.
EA

Emilie Adams · 10:59 PM

I get a lot of exercise and drink mainly water
OT

Olanna Taskey · 10:59 PM

Today I went to one of my favorite lunch spots. I had grilled salmon and salad with a side of french fries. I shared the french fries. I love french fries.
OT

Olanna Taskey · 11:00 PM

BUT the french fries were cut FRESH from potatoes and fried in fresh oil with no salt. I added salt.
EA

Emilie Adams · 11:00 PM

I sometimes have a latte or some tea. Very rarely do I drink anything else, unless I am doing a juice cleanse. I don't drink fruit juices typically and I very rarely drink soda
EA

Emilie Adams · 11:00 PM

Though there is a restaurant near me that makes a cherry yuzu soda from scratch that is divine
EA

Emilie Adams · 11:00 PM

And I have been known to make ginger soda syrup at home
OT

Olanna Taskey · 11:01 PM

I remember one time when I made up a cleanse on the spot and was going to trick you into doing it. I think I called it the Native American cleanse.
OT

Olanna Taskey · 11:01 PM

I said you had to eat a lot of seeds and corn or something… but I couldn
EA

Emilie Adams · 11:01 PM

yeah, that was pretty funny, but I saw right through that
OT

Olanna Taskey · 11:02 PM

't do it and had to tell you about my game. Sometimes all the rules to a diet get comical.
OT

Olanna Taskey · 11:02 PM

Yes, Emilie has a great recipe for homeade gingerale
EA

Emilie Adams · 11:02 PM

you said something really silly and I said, "no way!!"
OT

Olanna Taskey · 11:03 PM

yes, you are too smart to fool
EA

Emilie Adams · 11:04 PM

I am going to have to wrap it up as my kids are going nuclear!! So, my favorite diets? Dr. Perricone, Dr. Joshi's holistic detox and "Eating Well for Optimum Health" and my favorite juice cleanse is the Blueprint Cleanse because it is yummy.
EA

Emilie Adams · 11:05 PM

What about you Olanna?
OT

Olanna Taskey · 11:06 PM

Me too on the Dr Perricone diet. I say try different eating styles in moderation to find out what works best for you! The most beautiful thing you can do for yourself is smile! Good luck Emilie on wrangling the kids! TAWK SOON !!!
EA

Emilie Adams · 11:06 PM

And does anyone have any questions?
EA

Emilie Adams · 11:08 PM

I don't think so. I think we've hit our main diet advice. Feed yourself clean food and indulge in moderation. Drink lots of water and move your body. Those are my main goals as far as diet. Diet really should be called lifestyle
EA

Emilie Adams · 11:08 PM

I sometimes think "diet" can have such a negative vibe to it. Like you said, it's more about being kind to yourself
EA

Emilie Adams · 11:10 PM

Have a good night Olanna! It was nice Tawking to you. I will be tuning in later for Blake Ian's Tawk on Writing a Song at 9pm eastern time!!
