Lee Camp talks with activist/ writer/ radio personality Katie Klabusich on women's issues and more.

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 9:30 PM

Hey people of the world! Welcome to my tawk with Katie Klabusich...
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 9:30 PM

Quick note before we begin
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 9:30 PM

Katie and I cannot see your comments in the "audience" unless people vote those comments up.
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 9:31 PM

We will then pick some comments to "spotlight"
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 9:31 PM

Okay, let's get goin. How ya doin Katie?
KK

Katie Klabusich · 9:31 PM

Wow, people of the world. Spectacular. I am excellent. Thanks for having me, Lee!
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 9:32 PM

I'll start topical. First woman of Indian decent won Miss America - Nina Davuluri.
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 9:32 PM

A lot of people are upset that an "AAAA-RAB" won the contest. Do you agree with their feelings?
KK

Katie Klabusich · 9:32 PM

After disagreeing on a factual level.... o.O
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 9:32 PM

Yes, after that.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 9:33 PM

It's just another example of people flipping out over what they perceive to be "American" (she's actually -- gasp -- American) and what they see as the standard of beauty.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 9:33 PM

She's gorgeous, by the way.
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 9:34 PM

Damn straight. ...Are you a fan of the Miss America pageant?
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 9:34 PM

Or do you believe there should be more nudity?
KK

Katie Klabusich · 9:35 PM

I get the institution. Yes, it's a scholarship program...but heels with bathing suits. Even if it started as participants thumbing their noses at accepted "ladylike" behavior, I don't love it now.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 9:35 PM

More nudity and they'll be moving it to Cinemax....and Donald Trump will be first in line to fund/produce it!
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 9:36 PM

I think Donald should wear a swimsuit at least.
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 9:36 PM

★ Spotlighted from Lisa Del Rey

We are the melting pot of the world and there's people upset about this beautiful girl winning cause she's Arab? Really?

KK

Katie Klabusich · 9:36 PM

We would have to require his head to go nude.
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 9:36 PM

And she's not actually Arab.
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 9:37 PM

So it's ignorance mixed with hate, which is how it always seems to work.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 9:37 PM

Right? Even if she was Arab. Who cares?
KK

Katie Klabusich · 9:37 PM

Yep. It got weirder on Twitter after people started mistaking "Indian American" to mean "Native American." <sigh>
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 9:37 PM

Is there some scientific equation about how many parts ignorance equals how many parts hatred for others.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 9:38 PM

It's hard to tell with women's issues. There's also a super powerful streak of fear. "OH NO! The ladies have control over their bank accounts, their bodies and their lives!"
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 9:38 PM

What was it that made this your prime issue - other than just the whole being a woman thing.
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 9:39 PM

★ Spotlighted from Kerry Stevens

I don't like Miss America pageants and their standards they have for women, what we should look like, etc

KK

Katie Klabusich · 9:40 PM

It was the intersection of economics and physical autonomy that happened during the last election cycle. I know a lot about being economically insecure and about that leading to my need to exercise my right over my body, i.e. abortion services.
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 9:40 PM

★ Spotlighted from Susan Tribby

Women are given control over the children - what could be more powerful?

KK

Katie Klabusich · 9:41 PM

It seems like we're uncomfortable talking about something that one in three women will go through in their lives. That's a HUGE percentage of the population. About time we were grown up enough to discuss it.
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 9:41 PM

You're talking about watching Sex in the City? Oh, wait, abortion. Got it. Why have these issues come to a head in this country more now than, say, 15 years ago? Or is that an illusion?
KK

Katie Klabusich · 9:41 PM

It's not an illusion.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 9:42 PM

I think what happened is that the right-wing has spent so much time in the circle jerk of only talking to each other, that they forgot statements like "a woman can't get pregnant through legitimate rape" aren't mainstream.
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 9:42 PM

[Everybody remember to vote comments up if you want Katie and me to see them.]
KK

Katie Klabusich · 9:43 PM

So they started saying what they actually think. Like out loud. In front of cameras. And women -- and most men -- were like, "WHAT?"
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 9:43 PM

★ Spotlighted from Elizabeth Leng

I find it amazing how we seem to be going backwards in some sections of the community - or is it because media has given more light to the darker end of the genepool?

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 9:43 PM

★ Spotlighted from Kit Nowell

It's no illusion. The religious right has pushed it's way into our governments and are removing access to our constitutional rights

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 9:43 PM

Is it somewhat due to ALEC and the Koch Bros? They seem to be pushing many of these laws.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 9:43 PM

You said it, Kit. It's Lee's bit about Evil People With Plans. They have a good long game...for example the Koch Brothers.
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 9:44 PM

Evil people always have mother fuckin plans!!
KK

Katie Klabusich · 9:44 PM

Yeah, ALEC has a creepy cousin -- Americans United For Life -- that works a lot the same way. And last week Politico did a GREAT piece on a secret fund from the Koch Brothers that was used to funnel money to socially conservative causes.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 9:45 PM

"Freedom Partners" is the name of the organization. Because restricting my rights = FREEDOM!
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 9:45 PM

★ Spotlighted from Lisa Del Rey

We have our children, we raise our children yet even among working women, stay at mom homes are looked down upon.

KK

Katie Klabusich · 9:45 PM

★ Spotlighted from Jason Andrews

We've had a bad trot here in Australia - our new government has 1 woman minister - 1. There are more women in government in Afghanistan

KK

Katie Klabusich · 9:46 PM

★ Spotlighted from Susan Tribby

Okay, amend that, women are responsible for the rug rats, but men get to say whether the kids get born in the first place or not, 'cause they are still considered the "property owners" where kids are concerned.

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 9:46 PM

How do we combat that, Katie?
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 9:46 PM

★ Spotlighted from Kit Nowell

Yes, they started saying it out loud!! Shamelessly. And yes, Lee -- those Gomers have taken over in some regions. Happened in my state of NC

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 9:47 PM

★ Spotlighted from Elizabeth Leng

I feel they may well be doing the ol' divide and conquer, keep 'em ignorant and we'll clean up - but then I think there's a wake-up happening, too

KK

Katie Klabusich · 9:47 PM

We have to talk about it. All of it. The parts that cause the snickering because of the sex. The parts that are complicated because of economic issues. And the parts that are frustrating because of school boards and parents who oppose comprehensive
KK

Katie Klabusich · 9:48 PM

sex ed. The more information there is, the harder it is for politicians to sneak crazy restrictive bills through, like the motorcycle safety bill in NC with all the anti-choice amendments.
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 9:48 PM

Since you're a commentator on these issues, do you find people are uncomfortable talking about this stuff? Do they look at you like you're not a "lady" or something?
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 9:49 PM

Maybe if we just replaced "hello" with "vagina" people would get used to hearing it and then could talk about it?
KK

Katie Klabusich · 9:49 PM

That is an excellent idea. That's happening the next time I see you.
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 9:49 PM

ha!
KK

Katie Klabusich · 9:49 PM

Yeah. A lot on the discomfort. I contribute to Hal Sparks' radio show and we brought on the lead lawyer for a class action suite against a birth control option. She said she can't get press
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 9:50 PM

@Jason - Why is that happening in Australia?? You don't even have Koch Brothers!
KK

Katie Klabusich · 9:50 PM

because birth control discussions mean someone was having the sex.
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 9:50 PM

Who had sex?? GROSS!

Right? <clutches pearls>
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 9:51 PM

Should I make a "pearl necklace" joke? Probably not.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 9:51 PM

Australia is interesting next to the US. It's technically illegal to have an abortion (@Jason -- is that still everywhere?), but most people have access.
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 9:51 PM

But you brought up sex!
KK

Katie Klabusich · 9:51 PM

Here, it's technically legal, but 80% of the population doesn't have access.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 9:52 PM

I do that from time to time. Bring up the sex, that is.
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 9:52 PM

Can I ask you a fifty percent ignorant quesiton and a fifty percent good question? Here goes...
KK

Katie Klabusich · 9:52 PM

For sure
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 9:52 PM

Where have all the feminists gone??
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 9:52 PM

★ Spotlighted from Jason Andrews

Well the new Prime Minister is a bit of a religo nut bag - he got voted in bcos ... well everyone was sick of the other choice.

KK

Katie Klabusich · 9:52 PM

The millennials don't like that word because Rush and the other shouting heads have made it a bad word -- like "liberal" and other words that used to stand for positive, awesome things.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 9:53 PM

The feminists are popping up now. They aren't just going after our abortion rights, they're after a freaking birth control. Woke some people up!
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 9:54 PM

So is there another word? Or is it better to reclaim it? "Where have all the anti-patriarchy women gone?"
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 9:54 PM

Katie, don't tell me you forgot to keep the aspirin between your knees!
KK

Katie Klabusich · 9:54 PM

Nope. Feminist is it. There's an emphasis on being "intersectional" -- so, professor Katie in the house for a minute.
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 9:54 PM

★ Spotlighted from Ava Wilson

Or they make erroneous comparisons by creating absurd terms like 'Feminazi' to dissuade people from agreeing with Feminist principles.

KK

Katie Klabusich · 9:54 PM

The damn thing keeps falling out...
KK

Katie Klabusich · 9:54 PM

I'm tall. They need to make bigger asprin.
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 9:55 PM

Perhaps that's something we can come together on with the right-wing: Bigger aspirin.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 9:55 PM

So the intersectional thing means being inclusive: trans*, LGBT,
KK

Katie Klabusich · 9:55 PM

people of color, etc.
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 9:56 PM

★ Spotlighted from Ava Wilson

Even self-proclaimed Feminists sometimes struggle with breaking away from the patriarchal influences of society, unfortunately. It's something we have to work on within the movement, together, but the influences of people like Limbaugh don't help.

KK

Katie Klabusich · 9:56 PM

Women -- and men, I see you male feminists out there! -- are making this as big of a coalition as we can.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 9:56 PM

@Ava -- you couldn't be more right. I moved away from my small midwestern town at 17 and I was 30 before it occurred to me that getting married and having kids was the ACTIVE choice and if it wasn't for me, I didn't have to do it.
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 9:56 PM

And i think it's not just on women's issues. We need A LOT more women standing up on all issues.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 9:56 PM

Yes, please!
KK

Katie Klabusich · 9:57 PM

"All the ladies in the house..."
KK

Katie Klabusich · 9:57 PM

There's still a Puritanical streak in the US -- we're supposed to be seen and supportive, but not loud and bossy. Screw that.
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 9:57 PM

★ Spotlighted from Elizabeth Leng

We did the Slutwalk in the first year in London and all types of Feminist were outraged with us, till they saw the following. Being anti-rape helped.......but they didn't like the name

KK

Katie Klabusich · 9:58 PM

Yeah, there's a split on the slut walks. There are legitimate writers/talkers who support it and who feel "eh" about it.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 9:58 PM

So, a question for Lee...
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 9:58 PM

Sure
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 9:59 PM

★ Spotlighted from Ava Wilson

Feminism that is not intersectional is by default not truly conforming with Feminist principles, because Feminism should be for the equality and liberation of all women from the patriarchal cage, not just white women or cisgender women.

KK

Katie Klabusich · 9:59 PM

Why did you want to highlight women's issues?
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 9:59 PM

★ Spotlighted from Ava Wilson

I should go further: it should be for the liberation of all people from the patriarchal structure of society, because it arguably also harms men (although not as broadly or 'badly', but the harm is still there, particularly with LGBTQ men).

KK

Katie Klabusich · 9:59 PM

<slow clap> for Ava
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 9:59 PM

Because I wanted to highlight you, honestly. You're doing good stuff.
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 9:59 PM

But, and this gets to something I wanted to ask you
KK

Katie Klabusich · 9:59 PM

Ha! That's a good answer.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 9:59 PM

<courtesies>
KK

Katie Klabusich · 10:00 PM

(ironically)
KK

Katie Klabusich · 10:00 PM

★ Spotlighted from Jason Andrews

Not to enter into a competition but patriarchy does a great deal of damage to men as well

KK

Katie Klabusich · 10:00 PM

YES, Jason, it absolutely does. We need more men yelling about that with us.
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 10:01 PM

I worry that the few social issues which actually differentiate the GOP and Dems (LGBT, women's rights) are used to keep us thinking that the two parties are actually different. They're the same corporate party on SO many issues.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 10:01 PM

Agreed.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 10:01 PM

It's a big problem.
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 10:01 PM

Sadly I don't know what the answer is.
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 10:02 PM

Of course I suppose you could argue that the Green Party is great on women's rights, etc.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 10:02 PM

I don't either. I think it should piss off the libertarian constituency that (Yep, they're great on just about everything) big money is funding social issues and corporate issues. I'm not sure why there isn't a bigger alliance between liberal and
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 10:02 PM

★ Spotlighted from Jason Andrews

The expectation of being 'a man' (whatever that is) destroys some boy's lives

KK

Katie Klabusich · 10:03 PM

libertarian, other than the corporate media's need for us to be diametrically opposed and not talking to each other. We'd be a solid voting block if we could figure out how to work together.
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 10:03 PM

Yeah, I find my stuff fits with a lot of libertarians even if I disagree with them on some major issues.
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 10:03 PM

★ Spotlighted from Jason Andrews

Green parties have dificulty existing in a capitalist framework

KK

Katie Klabusich · 10:03 PM

★ Spotlighted from Meg Nolastname

My question is why are we still letting a small group control us as beings? Shouldn't we all stand up and decide how each and everyone of our bodies should be governed ourselves being that we are the ones who reside in them.

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 10:04 PM

@Jason - It's not "have difficulty," it's "are actively beaten down by the power elite.
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 10:04 PM

Jill Stein was chained to chair with an armed guard during the presidential debate.
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 10:04 PM

★ Spotlighted from Trey Williamson

I agree... Women have issues!

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 10:04 PM

★ Spotlighted from Ava Wilson

And it's perpetuated in seemingly subtle or 'innocent' ways, like the (intended to be) humorous use of the "I'm going to take your man card" shtick. How do those men feel when they're belittled for being too feminine? Not manly enough?

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 10:04 PM

★ Spotlighted from Susan Tribby

The issue is democracy - no human should be telling another one how to live outside of criminal behavior - the problem is thinking abortion is murder.

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 10:06 PM

Katie, would you be behind a Hillary run even though - in my opinion - she's the same hawkish, wall street mafia we've seen... in my opinion.
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 10:06 PM

★ Spotlighted from Michael Micklow

@ Meg -- because the representatives represent the constituents no on Main Street but rather Wall Street and K street. The system is rigged in favor of elitism and fascism. MSM controls the debate.

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 10:06 PM

★ Spotlighted from Tom Taker

It happens when we voluntarily hand over societal control to crackpots, like 13th century Thomas Aquinas who ordained only missionary position sex for procreation was not "sinful."

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 10:06 PM

★ Spotlighted from Ava Wilson

I also agree with Jason there. Capitalism as a system is not conductive to a society that wants to do things like preserve the environment or fight for equal rights.

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 10:07 PM

★ Spotlighted from Ava Wilson

I absolutely agree, Jason.

Lee Camp

More simplistic societies like hunter-gatherer societies tend to have generally less inequality (on average), because they are not as socially stratified.

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 10:08 PM

★ Spotlighted from Ava Wilson

Economic systems like capitalism that involve markets arise when intensive agriculture is practised in a society, and as a rule inequality *increases* when those production methods are utilised.

@Paul - The world is swirling around the drain as we speak. You're kidding yourself if you think things are good.

KK

Katie Klabusich · 10:10 PM

So, just a reason or two.
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 10:10 PM

★ Spotlighted from Ava Wilson

Because women's suffrage and the Civil Rights victories happened 40-60 years ago, Paul; we should be much further now than just having a black president or Indian Miss America.

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 10:10 PM

★ Spotlighted from Elizabeth Leng

★ Spotlighted from Ava Wilson

But it's much like how scientists warned of climate change decades ago, and we're still doing crap all about it. To move a society into action involves convincing society, not just individuals like yourself.

KK

Katie Klabusich · 10:11 PM

We don't do a good job of educating our population on movements and what it takes to affect change. People forget how long women's suffrage was, how long the Civil Rights movement took, etc.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 10:11 PM

People fall out of movement building and protesting and demanding change (a la the "formal" Occupy movements) when something doesn't happen immediately.
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 10:12 PM

Good point, Katie. Although Maker's Mark was gonna water down their whiskey and we stood up and stopped that in a matter of weeks!

@Paul - Sadly, I'm not the one with the strife. Those things I listed are not me. It's others who are suffering - and that's why I fight.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 10:16 PM

I volunteer for a few reproductive justice organizations, but nothing is more rewarding than escorting at women's clinics.
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 10:16 PM

What's that like? Some people may not even know what that is.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 10:17 PM

People still stand outside of legal women's clinics "protesting" -- what they actually do is harass women on their way to appointments for everything from birth control and sonograms to pregnancy termination.

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 10:18 PM

Avocados are mediocre. I don't get the hype.

KK

Katie Klabusich · 10:18 PM

So, a number of organizations and clinics have volunteers (think the National Lawyers Guild at protest events) who know the law and can give some shelter to women via friendly faces and physically shielding them from picketers.

Lee Camp · 10:18 PM

That's awesome. Sounds very important.

KK

Katie Klabusich · 10:19 PM

Thanks. It puts the human face on why I yell and write; it's how I recharge my advocate batteries.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 10:19 PM

(Thanks, Tom!)
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 10:20 PM

It's amazing the amount of hate and cruelty people can create in order to quote-unquote "protect" the unborn. They seem to care little for the living.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 10:20 PM

They care very little for the living. There are soup kitchens around the corner from the clinic where I was a team lead. Better use of their time.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 10:20 PM

Or they could, I dunno, work to end the death penalty.
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 10:21 PM

Does the soup kitchen need people to spit on it? I had no idea.
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 10:21 PM

We're wrapping up here folks, any questions for Katie?
KK

Katie Klabusich · 10:22 PM

Just in case people aren't aware, there are some great progressive religious organizations advocating for reproductive health.

Catholics for Choice, for example.

Think of picketers as the Westboro Baptist Church of anti-woman business. We can sideline them by treating them the same way. Roll out the unwelcome mat in your communities.

Yes, Ava! "They only care about you until you're born, then not again until you're military age."

Katie, Do you think women are better off today than they were 50 years ago or even 25 years ago?

But it's very real -- the visceral hate of these people and their supporters. Check out my ProLife Illusions piece -- and the 200 some comments. It'll blow your mind if you've never experienced it.

@Michael, I can get behind that. Or in front of it. I think I lost the analogy...

I question anything that involves Catholics. This is coming from a girl who went to an all girl catholic school thru college.

KK

Katie Klabusich · 10:26 PM

@Lisa Catholics are a more progressive voting block than the general public. It's just that they have a LOUD minority getting all the attention. American Catholics aren't typically into papal decrees and such.

My friend Charles Clymer has been invited to speak there. When he asked if they could invite some women to speak about women's struggles, his request was rejected. They said women had been dominating the women's rights talk 'throughout history'!
