Join Steve and Tony as they tawk about the latest celebrity couple to end their relationship, who might be next, and the strangest couples they can think of from the past.

SJ

Steve Johnson · 6:30 PM

Hey Tony how are you this afternoon?
AA

Anthony Alberts · 6:30 PM

I'm a little down in the dumps, Steve.
SJ

Steve Johnson · 6:30 PM

I know how you feel. Another celebrity couple bites the dust.
AA

Anthony Alberts · 6:31 PM

I really thought that Nick Canoon and mariah Carey had what it took to go the distance.
SJ

Steve Johnson · 6:31 PM

Did you Tony? Did you really?
AA

Anthony Alberts · 6:31 PM

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA No, not at all!!
SJ

Steve Johnson · 6:31 PM

Wow, that's kind of harsh!
AA

Anthony Alberts · 6:32 PM

Sorry Steve, but I'm a bit of a cynic. I mean, did you really think this was true love?
SJ

Steve Johnson · 6:33 PM

I thought there was at least some love. I mean they do have kids together.
AA

Anthony Alberts · 6:34 PM

Still, that doesn't mean much. Relationships like these are doomed from the start. Let's start with the age difference.
SJ

Steve Johnson · 6:34 PM

Nick Cannon is 33 and Mariah Carey is 44. 11 years isn't that big of a difference.
AA

Anthony Alberts · 6:35 PM

Maybe not, and certainly not if it were the other way around.
SJ

Steve Johnson · 6:35 PM

You mean if Nick was 11 years older?
AA

Anthony Alberts · 6:35 PM

Yes. That is something that is more common in society. I'm not saying that's how it should be, I'm just pointing it out.
SJ

Steve Johnson · 6:36 PM

Do you think that's something that was an issue?
AA

Anthony Alberts · 6:37 PM

Well, it's going to be talked about more often. Look at Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher. Their age difference was much greater, but other than when they first got together and eventually got separated, it was rarely mentioned.
SJ

Steve Johnson · 6:37 PM

That is true. A lot of times, no matter what the article was about, when they talked about Mariah and Nick, there was usually some mention of age.
AA

Anthony Alberts · 6:38 PM

Another example that the ill-fated Demi/Ashton pairing gave us is the working relationship. Not that Demi took a back seat, but....
SJ

Steve Johnson · 6:38 PM

But she wasn't doing a whole lot that kept her in the spotlight. Ashton was the one in the forefront.
AA

Anthony Alberts · 6:39 PM

Precisely.
SJ

Steve Johnson · 6:39 PM

Do you think that was an issue here? Nick and Mariah's careers, while both in entertainment, didn't have too much crossover. Ashton and Demi are both actors.
AA

Anthony Alberts · 6:40 PM

I think it did, and would have been less of an issue, if Mariah had been more successful as of late.
SJ

Steve Johnson · 6:40 PM

Nick Cannon was defintely the more successful of the two lately. America's Got Talent is one of the highest rated shows on television these last few years.
AA

Anthony Alberts · 6:41 PM

Yes and Mariah Carey's latest album "I am Mariah...The Elusive Chanteuse" sold less than 60,000 copies its first week out.
SJ

Steve Johnson · 6:42 PM

Her albums normally sell hundreds of thousands of copies, even millions.
AA

Anthony Alberts · 6:42 PM

Not her last few. And they've all been what would be considered "concept" albums. A hard sell if what you're known for is being a pop singer with a 7 octave range.
SJ

Steve Johnson · 6:43 PM

Well, with all due respect, when was the last time Mariah Carey was relevant?
AA

Anthony Alberts · 6:43 PM

I think a better question is: has any pop star really ever been relevant in the grand scheme of things?
SJ

Steve Johnson · 6:43 PM

You know what I mean.
AA

Anthony Alberts · 6:44 PM

I do, and that brings up my next point, which also ties into their individual successes. Her best days were already behind her when they got married, and his salad days were just beginning.
SJ

Steve Johnson · 6:44 PM

That had to be tough on her. It's hard for any performer to stay on top for an extended period of time.
AA

Anthony Alberts · 6:45 PM

And it gets harder to accept that when your spouse is having the greatest success of their career.
SJ

Steve Johnson · 6:45 PM

Still it is too bad that it didn't work out.
AA

Anthony Alberts · 6:45 PM

It is. Don't take my cynicism to mean that I'm happy to see this happen to Nick and Mariah, or to anyone for that matter.
AA

Anthony Alberts · 6:47 PM

Some of it goes back decades, to long before we were even born, when the Hollywood studios would arrange relationships to promote their stars or, more nefariously, to hide their true sexuality identity.
SJ

Steve Johnson · 6:47 PM

I do have to ask: what made you so cynical about relationships between popular people?
SJ

Steve Johnson · 6:47 PM

But with the end of the studio system, surely that should have renewed some of your faith in relationships.
AA

Anthony Alberts · 6:48 PM

Some, but not all, and what faith i did have went out the window when Tom Cruise left Nicole Kidman about ten seconds before the terms changed in their pre-nup. If they had stayed married for ten years, she would have been entitled to a lot more.
SJ

Steve Johnson · 6:49 PM

I remember that. he divorced her something like 6 weeks shy of their ten year anniversary.
AA

Anthony Alberts · 6:49 PM

Precisely.
SJ

Steve Johnson · 6:49 PM

Still, there are star couples that make it work, including what I have to think is the strangest ever.
AA

Anthony Alberts · 6:49 PM

Who is that?
SJ

Steve Johnson · 6:50 PM

Ric Ocasek from the rock group The Cars, and (I'm so going to misspell this last name) Paulina Pourizkhova.
AA

Anthony Alberts · 6:50 PM

Wow, you did butcher that! Couldn't look it up ahead of time?
SJ

Steve Johnson · 6:51 PM

I wanted to try my memoy!
AA

Anthony Alberts · 6:52 PM

Your memory failed. Try Porizkova.
SJ

Steve Johnson · 6:52 PM

So I added a couple of letters.
AA

Anthony Alberts · 6:52 PM

They are a strange pairing and still together, but not the strangest famous couple I know of.
SJ

Steve Johnson · 6:52 PM

Who do you got?
AA

Anthony Alberts · 6:53 PM

Mine also features a musician from the Boston area and a model, although she quickly became more famous as an actress.
SJ

Steve Johnson · 6:53 PM

Who are you talking about?
AA

Anthony Alberts · 6:54 PM

Peter Wolf from the J Geils Band and Faye Dunaway.
SJ

Steve Johnson · 6:54 PM

Get out!!!
AA

Anthony Alberts · 6:54 PM

Yup.
SJ

Steve Johnson · 6:54 PM

Is that who he wrote "Love Stinks" about?"
AA

Anthony Alberts · 6:54 PM

He claims no, but the song did come out after their 6 year relationship ended in '78.
SJ

Steve Johnson · 6:55 PM

I gotta look that one up. That's too good to be true.
AA

Anthony Alberts · 6:55 PM

And a perfect way to end this tawk. Sorry to hear about Nick Cannon and Mariah Carey.
SJ

Steve Johnson · 6:55 PM

I hope they at least do right by their kids. Thanks for the tawk Tony.
AA

Anthony Alberts · 6:55 PM

Any time Steve.
