Still, that doesn't mean much. Relationships like these are doomed from the start. Let's start with the age difference.

Nick Cannon is 33 and Mariah Carey is 44. 11 years isn't that big of a difference.

Yes. That is something that is more common in society. I'm not saying that's how it should be, I'm just pointing it out.

Well, it's going to be talked about more often. Look at Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher. Their age difference was much greater, but other than when they first got together and eventually got separated, it was rarely mentioned.

That is true. A lot of times, no matter what the article was about, when they talked about Mariah and Nick, there was usually some mention of age.

Another example that the ill-fated Demi/Ashton pairing gave us is the working relationship. Not that Demi took a back seat, but....

But she wasn't doing a whole lot that kept her in the spotlight. Ashton was the one in the forefront.

Do you think that was an issue here? Nick and Mariah's careers, while both in entertainment, didn't have too much crossover. Ashton and Demi are both actors.

I think it did, and would have been less of an issue, if Mariah had been more successful as of late.

Nick Cannon was defintely the more successful of the two lately. America's Got Talent is one of the highest rated shows on television these last few years.

Yes and Mariah Carey's latest album "I am Mariah...The Elusive Chanteuse" sold less than 60,000 copies its first week out.

Her albums normally sell hundreds of thousands of copies, even millions.

Not her last few. And they've all been what would be considered "concept" albums. A hard sell if what you're known for is being a pop singer with a 7 octave range.

I do, and that brings up my next point, which also ties into their individual successes. Her best days were already behind her when they got married, and his salad days were just beginning.

That had to be tough on her. It's hard for any performer to stay on top for an extended period of time.

And it gets harder to accept that when your spouse is having the greatest success of their career.

It is. Don't take my cynicism to mean that I'm happy to see this happen to Nick and Mariah, or to anyone for that matter.

Some of it goes back decades, to long before we were even born, when the Hollywood studios would arrange relationships to promote their stars or, more nefariously, to hide their true sexuality identity.

But with the end of the studio system, surely that should have renewed some of your faith in relationships.

Some, but not all, and what faith i did have went out the window when Tom Cruise left Nicole Kidman about ten seconds before the terms changed in their pre-nup. If they had stayed married for ten years, she would have been entitled to a lot more.
