The idea of letting go of my thoughts is what first drew me to meditation
EG

Eric Goldsmith · 10:42 PM

and the fact that so many well known people had been doing it and finding it improved their overall life and in turn health
EG

Eric Goldsmith · 10:43 PM

what first prompted you to learn more about meditation?
Blake Ian

Blake Ian · 11:01 PM

Learning that so many highly successful people practice TM specifically was definitely a big selling point for me
Blake Ian

Blake Ian · 11:02 PM

By the way sorry I was away when you began... I was mediating! haha
Blake Ian

Blake Ian · 11:04 PM

So "letting go of thoughts" is an interesting way to put it. I think the biggest misconception going into this is that you STOP thinking. But the way you put it here is much more accurate
Blake Ian

Blake Ian · 11:05 PM

The thoughts continue, but you detach from them.
EG

Eric Goldsmith · 11:10 PM

hmm interesting.... thoughts continue but you detach from them
Blake Ian

Blake Ian · 11:10 PM

Deepak had an interesting anology that I always liked. Or maybe it was Alan Watts? haha
Blake Ian

Blake Ian · 11:11 PM

That thoughts are like a movie being projected on a screen
Blake Ian

Blake Ian · 11:11 PM

we are not the images... we are the screen. We remain unchanged.
Blake Ian

Blake Ian · 11:12 PM

I have experienced that while meditating pretty often... like a stream of something is passing by and I am watching it. Observing
EG

Eric Goldsmith · 11:12 PM

me too
Blake Ian

Blake Ian · 11:13 PM

That activity, twice every day, has definitely strengthened that muscle in my mind... and has allowed me to observe during the waking state as well.
Blake Ian

Blake Ian · 11:13 PM

Which can be VERY useful! To myself... and perhaps more so to those around me! : )
EG

Eric Goldsmith · 11:14 PM

agreed
EG

Eric Goldsmith · 11:15 PM

i find that if i miss a day or two it is more difficult to let go of the thoughts.....sort of like an overfilled vacuum bag
EG

Eric Goldsmith · 11:17 PM

the link took me here
Blake Ian

Blake Ian · 11:20 PM

Haha yeah letting the practice go, definitely fills up the bag!
EG

Eric Goldsmith · 11:21 PM

however, once i settle in to twice a day routinely again i find that i am easily able to move beyond observing my thoughts... at a ceetain point it becomes me and my mantra and all thoughts are settled - its sublime
Blake Ian

Blake Ian · 11:21 PM

Sublime indeed
Blake Ian

Blake Ian · 11:21 PM

and yes just like any practice... it gets easier with... PRACTICE
Blake Ian

Blake Ian · 11:22 PM

but like you said... the more often you empty the bag, the less full it is each time you sit
Blake Ian

Blake Ian · 11:22 PM

I find the same
EG

Eric Goldsmith · 11:23 PM

the most comforting part of meditation is the ENERGY i get from it
EG

Eric Goldsmith · 11:24 PM

replace comforting with surprising
EG

Eric Goldsmith · 11:24 PM

positive mental attitude is a given when you awake
EG

Eric Goldsmith · 11:25 PM

and the possibilities you can believe without actually seeing evidence is endless
Blake Ian

Blake Ian · 11:27 PM

Yeah you know its funny because I was told about so many different benefits going in... and Ive realized different people experience the benefits in different order
Blake Ian

Blake Ian · 11:27 PM

you spoke right away about the energy... which didn't come along for a while for me
EG

Eric Goldsmith · 11:28 PM

from someone who has always thought "anything is possible" Meditation becomes an enabling mechanism which drives limits of possibility beyond 'anything' into EVERYTHING or more specifically everything you have NOT yet thought of...
EG

Eric Goldsmith · 11:29 PM

i done some other forms of meditation before TM
EG

Eric Goldsmith · 11:30 PM

the first time i was 18 or 19 in a college classroom and my health teacher asked us to close our eyes as she turned off the lights and we were to just let thoughts come and go..... it was almost impossible for me then...
EG

Eric Goldsmith · 11:32 PM

helpful to my state of mind.
Blake Ian

Blake Ian · 11:34 PM

Totally... I have had similar experiences... and I chalk it up to that fact that its always more difficult to really get the full benefits of something without a method, a teacher and a regular practice.
Blake Ian

Blake Ian · 11:35 PM

and thats what TM brought for me. It is sustainable because the benefits are so clearly felt
Blake Ian

Blake Ian · 11:35 PM

When I did Yoga for years, I always did it until I felt better, at which I point I stopped immediately haha
Blake Ian

Blake Ian · 11:38 PM

I do the same with the gym to this day
Blake Ian

Blake Ian · 11:38 PM

thought Im getting better
EG

Eric Goldsmith · 11:39 PM

so TM is addictive
EG

Eric Goldsmith · 11:40 PM

or is it the idea of submitting yourself to something bc the pain of NOT having it present throughout the day isnt fun
Blake Ian

Blake Ian · 11:41 PM

Yes... I think addictive has a certain connotation. Addictive in my mind, and I might be wrong, refers to something that wil actually bring you down without it.
Blake Ian

Blake Ian · 11:41 PM

I don't find that with meditation.
Blake Ian

Blake Ian · 11:42 PM

The benefits are accumulative as opposed to a balance point which adjusts, and has negative results if you have to go without it.
EG

Eric Goldsmith · 11:44 PM

if i keep to the idea of letting thoughts settle then without meditation thoughts begin to acuumulate and stress gets heavier, for me there is a negative affect taking place
Blake Ian

Blake Ian · 11:46 PM

hmmm... true, but I guess what Im asking is weren't you doing that before
Blake Ian

Blake Ian · 11:46 PM

actually much worse
Blake Ian

Blake Ian · 11:46 PM

As opposed to landing in a worse state than you were before ever meditating, which I wouldn't say is the case right?
Blake Ian

Blake Ian · 11:47 PM

you may notice now that you want that clarity, but I wouldn't say you have less clarity now if you miss meditation. In fact I'd say there is a permanent effect that you don't unlearn.
EG

Eric Goldsmith · 11:47 PM

before was like a volatile stock mkt
Blake Ian

Blake Ian · 11:47 PM

haha
EG

Eric Goldsmith · 11:47 PM

im serious
EG

Eric Goldsmith · 11:47 PM

volatility
EG

Eric Goldsmith · 11:47 PM

up and down
Blake Ian

Blake Ian · 11:48 PM

The Maharishi gave an analogy of turning a light on in a room with a dimmer...
Blake Ian

Blake Ian · 11:49 PM

if you start with the slightest amount of light... that difference will never be equaled no matter how bright you get, the difference between No Light and Light will never be matched.
Blake Ian

Blake Ian · 11:50 PM

Hence, the way you felt the FIRST mediation!
EG

Eric Goldsmith · 11:50 PM

this assumes we start without light
EG

Eric Goldsmith · 11:51 PM

im not sure i know the answer to my addiction question just yet....
EG

Eric Goldsmith · 11:53 PM

can i highlight one line you wrote and bring it into my comment area so i can respond directly to it? or just like iut?
EG

Eric Goldsmith · 11:53 PM

give it more attetnion
EG

Eric Goldsmith · 11:53 PM

i tried copy and past but that doesnt work
Blake Ian

Blake Ian · 11:55 PM

You can share each comment to Twitter, Fbook, LinkedIN and Mail
Blake Ian

Blake Ian · 11:55 PM

Interesting point you make thought
Blake Ian

Blake Ian · 11:55 PM

*thought
Blake Ian

Blake Ian · 11:55 PM

hahah THOUGH
Blake Ian

Blake Ian · 11:55 PM

do we start with NO light... probably not.
Blake Ian

Blake Ian · 11:57 PM

It's a very good point, because for sure we have experienced the feeling we get from meditating before learning.
EG

Eric Goldsmith · 12:03 AM

going to sit

★ Spotlighted from Galen Dorian

*taking bong rips and cigarette breaks throughout the day's activities to "recharge!" and "relax!"

Blake Ian

Blake Ian · 2:22 PM

You know Galen, your comment is extremely interesting to me (and apparently to the rest of the audience, since they voted it up for my co-host and I to see)
Blake Ian

Blake Ian · 2:28 PM

I must admit that I used to "indulge" quite often actually, and since the first day of my practice I have not smoked marijuana a single time. Mostly because that specific urge has left me in a significant way, and I can attribute this directly to TM
Blake Ian

Blake Ian · 2:32 PM

That same draining of stress, recalibrating and connection with creative channels... Looking back the fatal flaw of getting high, (for me at least) was lack of regularity, dosage, and the downsides that don't come along with TM.
Blake Ian

Blake Ian · 2:33 PM

But I do not look down on it at all and I try to never judge the choices of others, especially ones that do not effect me. All I can speak of is my own experience, which is just that.
Blake Ian

Blake Ian · 10:58 PM

★ Spotlighted from Dina Fein

I would love to participate in this tawk, but I'm in the middle of a project which is demanding my full attention and making me nuts. As I write this, I have the feeling that I am making the argument for meditation!

Blake Ian

Blake Ian · 10:58 PM

Indeed Jane (IF that is your real name!) ; )
Blake Ian

Blake Ian · 10:59 PM

It's a discussion I have had many times with people who are interested in meditation. Eric you will remember saying to me "I don't have 20 minutes twice a day bro"
Blake Ian

Blake Ian · 11:00 PM

But now as you can see... that that 40 minutes creates so much more energy and efficiency in your day, that you net out UP a few hours, including the 40 minutes. Wouldn't you say?
EG

Eric Goldsmith · 2:51 AM

★ Spotlighted from ed goldsmith

definition of Faith...love what Eric just said...evidence not seen!

EG

Eric Goldsmith · 2:53 AM

nailed it big ed
EG

Eric Goldsmith · 2:55 AM

i think your net UP a few hours comes from not smoking and spending the last 2 yrs feeding your passion building this.....thats just me, but yes u def makeup the 40 mins and then some
Blake Ian

Blake Ian · 12:23 PM

Agreed, and that sets up a chicken or the egg question. Did I stop smoking and become more productive in the least two years because of TM, or did I learn TM because it was time to stop smoking and become more productive?
EG

Eric Goldsmith · 12:53 PM

Both

I took our nephew Tyler to orientation at the TM center in Garden City yesterday... I let him know about all the cool people that practiced TM for most of their lives
Blake Ian

Blake Ian · 6:04 PM

Like Steve Jobs and George Lucas... He thought it was pretty awesome that the guy who made Star Wars did TM and that Yoda was based on the Maharishi! :)
