MC

Matt Cassata · 12:02 AM

Ok! Well, I'm 21, I live in Pittsburgh, PA, I go to school at the Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science working on getting a couple different degrees actually, and I work at a funeral home here too :D
MC

Matt Cassata · 12:02 AM

I'm still in training though as a funeral director
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:03 AM

well first of all congrats on getting accepted into the training program, sounds like it is a tough program to get into :)
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:03 AM

so what degree are you currently going for, or degrees?
MC

Matt Cassata · 12:04 AM

I'm working on my certification for embalming/funeral directing, my associates in specialized business and my bachelors in mortuary science!
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:04 AM

wow! right on! that's great! :)
MC

Matt Cassata · 12:04 AM

They're all sort of compiled on top of one another, so lots of classes..... xD
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:05 AM

so you are going for all of these simultaneously??
MC

Matt Cassata · 12:05 AM

yep!
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:05 AM

wow! that's awesome! good for you! :)
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:05 AM

So what got you interested in mortuary science and funeral director services in the first place?
MC

Matt Cassata · 12:06 AM

Honestly, it was always an interest of mine. Whenever I was younger, I was really curious about it, and I remember being at my grandfather's funeral when I was 11 like sneaking around trying to find out where all the "behind the scenes" stuff was
MC

Matt Cassata · 12:06 AM

even though I didn't even know what the "behind the scenes" stuff was!
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:07 AM

hm. I think the only things I learned about this side of life was from watching MY GIRL and I used to think how creepy it would be to live in that house lol
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:07 AM

So you never have been scared of the dead then? more just curious?
MC

Matt Cassata · 12:08 AM

Yep! It's always been just a curiosity to me. I remember asking my mom all sorts of questions after the funeral, even! But she refused to answer anything, she thought I was being morbid
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:08 AM

lol!
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:08 AM

ah society doesn't like to talk about death that's for sure...
MC

Matt Cassata · 12:09 AM

The United States is actually notorious for being THE most death denying culture in the world
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:09 AM

that is INSANE... especially since we are the ones who are dying so early
MC

Matt Cassata · 12:09 AM

It's a big part of why the industry is looked at in such a weird way
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:10 AM

sort of a taboo area
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:10 AM

I took the psychology of death and dying a few semesters back and I remember the professors saying how it was so ironic to him that no one thinks or talks about death, when it is such a normal part of the human experience
MC

Matt Cassata · 12:11 AM

It's just very uncomfortable for people, especially in the United States. For some odd reason it has become something that doesn't happen, or when it does, you sweep it under the rug and get the "process" over with as quick as possible
MC

Matt Cassata · 12:12 AM

And when you rush the process like that too, it makes the denial even more extreme, and it's a vicious cycle
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:12 AM

that's sort of sad.. it used to be that it was like a 7 day ritual for many people. way back in the day.. they grieved properly
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:12 AM

yes exactly!
MC

Matt Cassata · 12:12 AM

Exactly!
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:13 AM

is psychology of that nature part of your training? and like the history of your profession?
MC

Matt Cassata · 12:13 AM

Oh yeah, we take an obscene amount of Psychology courses in these programs
MC

Matt Cassata · 12:14 AM

And an entire course dedicated just to the history of the profession and all of that stuff
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:14 AM

That's awesome to hear! Especially because I am assuming a huge part of your job is consoling the families
MC

Matt Cassata · 12:14 AM

There's something to be said about the grieving process and having the time to say goodbye that helps people deal with it healthier than how most Americans do
MC

Matt Cassata · 12:15 AM

Oh yeah, people don't realize that 90% of our work is dealing with living breathing people!
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:15 AM

ugh we are so avoidant of any true emotion:/
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:15 AM

so what sort of skills do you learn in your training courses? like what sort of technical things do you do?
MC

Matt Cassata · 12:16 AM

Most of the more technical things we learn deal with embalming and restorative art
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:16 AM

can you tell me like how embalming works? or is that morbid? ;) lol I'm curious now!
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:17 AM

do you just flush out the blood and put the fluid in its place?
MC

Matt Cassata · 12:17 AM

Haha no it's not morbid!
MC

Matt Cassata · 12:18 AM

Pretty much? There's a lot of chemistry that goes into it though. Embalming fluid works by reacting with the proteins that are already in the body, so you would embalm someone who was a body builder a lot differently than you would an obese person
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:18 AM

hm. so you have to create a different composition every time? I never knew that!
MC

Matt Cassata · 12:19 AM

There's high index fluids and low index fluids and fluids for jaundice bodies and fluids for bodies with edema and it's all about mixing the right concoction!
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:20 AM

hm! is that for the coloring of the skin? (my tour to a funeral home is coming back to me lol)
MC

Matt Cassata · 12:20 AM

because one fluid you may use to embalm someone could be perfect for them, and the next person you could turn green and swell like a balloon!
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:20 AM

oh ok! haha you don't want someone turning out looking like the hulk or something HAHA
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:20 AM

weird. so you have to be pretty good at chemistry then!
MC

Matt Cassata · 12:21 AM

yeah! I mean, you don't need to know the periodic table of elements like the back of your hand or anything, but there's definitely some mishaps that can go real bad real quick if you're clueless!
MC

Matt Cassata · 12:22 AM

but you DO however need to know anatomy like the back of your hand!
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:22 AM

wow and say something did go wrong could you fix it? or would the person just have to stay green?
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:22 AM

oh! anatomy! I envy that you can learn that! there is a reason I never became a doctor lol!
MC

Matt Cassata · 12:22 AM

Well, that would be a worst case scenerio, and if that happens..... Yeah.. You might have to talk with the family about a closed casket :(
MC

Matt Cassata · 12:23 AM

But usually that's where restorative art comes into play, and honestly, usually with a little tinkering you can fix problems that might have come up!
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:23 AM

so when you are training how do you practice that stuff? on cadavers?
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:23 AM

or like bodies donated to science?
MC

Matt Cassata · 12:24 AM

I can't speak for every mortuary school, but my school actually has a contract with local funeral homes, where if a family maybe can't afford to embalm their loved one, they can sign a contract and then we'll get the decedent and embalm them for free
MC

Matt Cassata · 12:24 AM

the family knowing of course that we're still in training
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:24 AM

oh wow! that's cool though! Help someone out with the cost.. speaking of which, holy crap are funerals expensive!
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:25 AM

it must be a pretty lucrative business
MC

Matt Cassata · 12:25 AM

yes, they are... It's unfortunate that something so necessary is so expensive. But in the same respect, a lot goes into those prices!
MC

Matt Cassata · 12:25 AM

It all depends on what you're doing, truthfully
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:26 AM

there are so many different kinds and qualities of caskets
MC

Matt Cassata · 12:26 AM

Most funeral directors, at least locally, only make about a 40k profit yearly after everything is taken out bill wise! Which is not much considering the average burial funeral is about 8k!
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:26 AM

wow. that's surprising!
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:27 AM

so what is one thing you love about your job that maybe you didn't expect to love?
MC

Matt Cassata · 12:27 AM

Removals!
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:27 AM

what's that?
MC

Matt Cassata · 12:28 AM

Whenever someone passes away and they call the funeral home they'd like to use, no matter what time it is or anything, we have to go and pick up the body from wherever it is
MC

Matt Cassata · 12:28 AM

And that's just called a removal!
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:28 AM

hm.
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:29 AM

I would assume that going into that at first would be sort of nerve wreckin
MC

Matt Cassata · 12:29 AM

Something about having to get up at all hours of the night to pick up a decedent who's in who knows what kind of condition just didn't seem desirable
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:29 AM

what do you like about it?
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:29 AM

understandable
MC

Matt Cassata · 12:30 AM

I just think that it's very.. I don't know how to put it, because fun is inappropriate. Maybe interesting?
MC

Matt Cassata · 12:30 AM

It's the first real contact you get with the family (if they're present)
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:31 AM

So it's the first time you are meeting these people you will be dealing with throughout the process
MC

Matt Cassata · 12:31 AM

So you get to start learning about who they are, what the situation may be, and you really do feel the appreciation factor too which always is nice!
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:31 AM

so you haven't had too many "unruly" families to deal with
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:31 AM

well yes and just knowing someone is going to take care of their loved one even though they are "gone" is comforting I'm sure for them
MC

Matt Cassata · 12:32 AM

well, there's the good and the bad families. usually if there's an "unruly" family, we hear about it on the phone before we even leave! honestly, most people are pretty calm by time we arrive wherever though
MC

Matt Cassata · 12:32 AM

knock on wood, I haven't had any issues yet!
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:32 AM

well I hope it stays that way :)
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:33 AM

so what would you say is the hardest parts of this job?
MC

Matt Cassata · 12:33 AM

I feel like most families almost feel bad for waking us up, honestly. Which is funny, because we're supposed to be the ones being sympathetic!
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:33 AM

lol aww good people
MC

Matt Cassata · 12:34 AM

Probably meeting with the families during removals (which is funny because I just said that was one of the things I like)
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:34 AM

haha
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:34 AM

you like a challenge
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:34 AM

I would think it would be hard not to get attached to families
MC

Matt Cassata · 12:34 AM

It's just so hard to walk into a situation as a complete stranger and be like "I realize you just lost your mom but I'm gonna take her away from you now despite you only knowing my name"
MC

Matt Cassata · 12:35 AM

Honestly, there's nothing wrong with getting attached to the families!
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:35 AM

yeah. you are like the first bit of reality setting in of the grieving process in a way
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:35 AM

really? well that's nice. I mean I know if I was going through that it would be nice to be able to confident in the funeral director
MC

Matt Cassata · 12:36 AM

It's very hard, especially whenever you recommend that they leave the room (which is what is preferred when we actually start moving the body)
MC

Matt Cassata · 12:36 AM

Because then they start really feeling what's happening and you just feel for them
MC

Matt Cassata · 12:37 AM

Oh yeah, it's actually really good to get attached to families! This is one of those fields where attachment only makes the service better. The important thing is knowing where to draw the line between being attached and acknowledging their grief
MC

Matt Cassata · 12:37 AM

and feeling their grief with them. if you start feeling their grief with them, that's what makes for early retirements.
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:38 AM

oh I can imagine that is where a lot of burnout in your field comes from
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:38 AM

were you warned by fellow professionals or your professors about anything in particular, as far as the hardest things to deal with in this job?
MC

Matt Cassata · 12:39 AM

I believe, when I started school (don't quote me because I don't have sources) but I was told that statistically 50% of those who graduate are no longer practicing within 5 years of graduation
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:39 AM

WOW
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:39 AM

that's a CRAZY burnout rate!
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:39 AM

So what do you think makes the difference between those who stay and those who don't?
MC

Matt Cassata · 12:40 AM

I think one of the biggest things that people don't initially realize when they start doing this is that this isn't a job
MC

Matt Cassata · 12:40 AM

this is a life you're choosing where you can't hang up your coat and just clock out, it's your entire life, and your life revolves around it
MC

Matt Cassata · 12:41 AM

and a lot of people cannot handle that! and I don't blame them!
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:41 AM

I don't either and I think you are right especially when it comes to such a sensitive topic as death and dying
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:41 AM

audience, my quiet audience, feel free to shout out any questions if you have any! :)
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:42 AM

so I'd think that those who are more well adjusted about death in general might be more likely to stay in this career
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:42 AM

Hi Robin! It works we just have a quiet room tonight! welcome :)
MC

Matt Cassata · 12:42 AM

Everyone is just so quiet!
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:42 AM

it must be the taboo subject ;)
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:42 AM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

i was a half hour late. and see no comments. i assumed the comment screen was not working.

MC

Matt Cassata · 12:43 AM

I think there's definitely personality types that just, some can handle it and others just can't but you don't know until you try!
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:43 AM

so let's talk alittle about the misconceptions and stereotypes you hear about your field?
MC

Matt Cassata · 12:43 AM

OH GOD
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:43 AM

exactly.
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:43 AM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

well, i'm not usually quiet. no its a great subject

MC

Matt Cassata · 12:44 AM

Well, first of all. We are normal! People!
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:44 AM

not the adams family? lol
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:45 AM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

relax! i believe you! = D

MC

Matt Cassata · 12:45 AM

Exactly! Everyone looks at me like I have 3 heads when I say I'm going to school for this, because everyone believes that to be a funeral director is to be some morbid quiet creepy guy who mows their lawn in a suit
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:45 AM

HAHA
MC

Matt Cassata · 12:45 AM

And only deals with dead things all day xAx
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:45 AM

OMG THAT IS A VISUAL LOL
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:46 AM

people must be surprised when they find out you are normal? lol
MC

Matt Cassata · 12:46 AM

I mean there probably ARE funeral directors who do that, but yes, people are always so shocked!
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:46 AM

For some reason I thought of THE BURBS movie lol!
MC

Matt Cassata · 12:46 AM

I think a lot of people think funeral directors are just automatically born 50 years old with a suit on and ready to work
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:46 AM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

i'vd seen movies like that!

RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:47 AM

haha and someone how that you guys like inflicting pain too? when really it is like the opposite
MC

Matt Cassata · 12:47 AM

Yep! And apparently we are all really antisocial and weird, also the exact opposite
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:47 AM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

it is a very necessary function you perform

MC

Matt Cassata · 12:47 AM

Actually Robin, there's a new up and coming thing called a Celebrant Service
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:48 AM

haha yes because you HAVE to be sociable for the families
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:48 AM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

personally, i don't want a funeral... no offense to matt. i would rather they had a big fun party.

MC

Matt Cassata · 12:48 AM

It's basically a funeral, but it puts the FUN back in it!
MC

Matt Cassata · 12:48 AM

And exactly Rachel! Like all of these misconceptions about the "stereotypical" Funeral Director really are all the exact OPPOSITE!
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:49 AM

exactly why we shouldn't rely on stereotypes :p
MC

Matt Cassata · 12:49 AM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

yay! sounds good matt. but how do youmake it fun?

MC

Matt Cassata · 12:49 AM

well obviously if it's your celebrant service it won't be much fun for you, but it's pretty much a party, there can be food (if it's legal where you live), music, lots of stories and stuff. It's usually done as a memorial service as opposed to
MC

Matt Cassata · 12:50 AM

a funeral, but it can be done for funerals too and it's a lot more relaxed!
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:50 AM

lol! it won't be much fun for you.. but for everyone else a blast! :D
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:50 AM

I agree Robin, I would think Humor would be a great way to buffer your stress with the grief and death
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:50 AM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

seems like it might be necessary to have a great sense of humor as a funeral director. a break from the gloom.

MC

Matt Cassata · 12:50 AM

we definitely have our jokes we say around the water cooler... xD
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:51 AM

Yes! I guess it just depends on what you believe.. I plan on swooping in on my funeral and having some fun too! ;)
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:51 AM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

aw come on, i can have fun too, can't i? = D

RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:51 AM

I know a church is the common place for a funeral, but have you witnessed them in other places? or anywhere strange?
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:51 AM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

i bet i would love to hear your jokes.

MC

Matt Cassata · 12:51 AM

Haha now that I'm trying to think of any jokes Robin I'm drawing a blank, sorry!
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:52 AM

lol try to come up with some for next time :)
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:52 AM

I dare to say that there are so many people who respect (or should respect) your profession and those who do the job.
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:52 AM

★ Spotlighted from Robert Jenkins

Sobering job can't say I could do it.

MC

Matt Cassata · 12:53 AM

I'm trying to think of any odd places where I've seen funerals. Honestly the only ones I've been to have been at the funeral homes, though a few of my superiors have had funeral services done at the homes of the deceased, which was apparently a lot
MC

Matt Cassata · 12:53 AM

of fun *heavy sarcasm*
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:53 AM

lol
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:54 AM

I would think it would be harder to do it at their homes, at least at the funeral home you have everything you need right there and a bit more controlled atmosphere
MC

Matt Cassata · 12:54 AM

I would hope we're appreciated! But there are a lot of people who actually really dislike us and think we're one step above con artists :(
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:54 AM

I think we should continue this tawk soon and talk about the dark-humor side of the field! :D
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:54 AM

cuz that sounds fun lol
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:54 AM

why?
MC

Matt Cassata · 12:54 AM

Exactly, it makes for a nerve wracking situation! But did you know that for that reason, funeral directors are the ones who invented the folding chair?
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:54 AM

really?
MC

Matt Cassata · 12:54 AM

So that they could set up more seats in the homes when funerals took place. Yep!
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:55 AM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

truly, we should all respect those who do matt's job/life choice.

RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:55 AM

hm! I didn't know that! Interesting piece of trivia! :)
MC

Matt Cassata · 12:55 AM

And people dislike us because they think what we do is genuinely unnecessary and that we're just prying on the dollar of the distressed, which OBVIOUSLY isn't true
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:55 AM

would you be up for tawking again with me Matt? :)
MC

Matt Cassata · 12:55 AM

yeah totally!
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:55 AM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

cool matt!

RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:55 AM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

yes, rachel! the funny side of death. = D

RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:56 AM

I would say that what you do is TOTALLY necessary.. it's not like the people who say that would want to really dispose of their loved ones remains...
MC

Matt Cassata · 12:56 AM

Robin please don't die in the Summer haha!
MC

Matt Cassata · 12:56 AM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

i'm thinking, out in my yard by a pile of boulders and trees. hopefully i die in the summer.

MC

Matt Cassata · 12:56 AM

thanks Rachel!
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:56 AM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

good sport, matt!

RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:56 AM

I mean that is the crux of the service you provide, it is something most people couldn't handle in a calm, rational manner
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:57 AM

Sure! :) Hope you had fun! We will come up with a time to do the second one soon! :)
MC

Matt Cassata · 12:57 AM

Anytime you plan a death, it happens 3 months later than expected! ;)
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:57 AM
