Join Jack and J.D. for their weekly tawk about all things NFL. We'll look back at the first week, see what surprised us and what didn't, look ahead at the week two match-ups, offer some fantasy picks, and cover some of the off field action as well.
JT
Jack Terry · 1:00 AM
Welcome back from vacation JD!
JA
Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 1:00 AM
Thanks a million! Just in time for week 1...
JT
Jack Terry · 1:00 AM
Just in time! So much NFL action to tawk about this week.
JA
Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 1:01 AM
No doubt...some upsets, amazing "feets" ....
JA
Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 1:01 AM
dynasties...hmmm, a kink in some armor?
JT
Jack Terry · 1:01 AM
Just a few. certainly some unexpected results and, for Cowboys fans, an all too predictable outcome in jerryworld.
JA
Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 1:02 AM
Well, I've got Dallas fans in my family and they are certainly ready for a LOOOONNNNNGGGG season!!
JA
Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 1:02 AM
My Chiefs didn't fare much better...
JT
Jack Terry · 1:03 AM
I'm glad they are. I'm actively considering renouncing my fan-ness. At least you guys didn't turn it over on four straight possessions.
JA
Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 1:03 AM
No but we seem unable to score...that is NOT good...
JA
Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 1:03 AM
Charles was....well...shut down
JT
Jack Terry · 1:03 AM
The only shot Dallas has with their piss poor defense is an offense that can put up numbers. Tony Rommo shows what happens when you don't take part in preseason.
JT
Jack Terry · 1:03 AM
I think I had more yards rushing from the sofa to the fridge than Charles had in that game!
JA
Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 1:04 AM
Romo was a disappointent for sure...
JT
Jack Terry · 1:04 AM
The NFC East in general played three and a half lousy games of football. eagles certainly looked sharp in their second half.
JA
Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 1:05 AM
Foles showed a little something....
JA
Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 1:05 AM
He's got some weapons, but is inconsistent
JT
Jack Terry · 1:05 AM
That whole team did. the Jags (I mean, c'mon, the Jags?) looked dominant in the first half and then just destroyed in the second.
JT
Jack Terry · 1:06 AM
That's one thing about week one. You gotta take a lot of these games with a grain of salt.
JA
Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 1:06 AM
The Jags never really looked all that good in my book...just lucky and The Eagles wer playing lazy
JA
Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 1:06 AM
Shocker for me was Miami and the Pats!
JT
Jack Terry · 1:07 AM
I won't say I wasn't shocked, but I am high on the Dolphins this year and I know they needed this win to set a new tone for them.
JT
Jack Terry · 1:08 AM
Another team that needed a win in that division and got it was the Jets. beating the Raiders isn't the same as the Patriots, but it still is a good start.
JA
Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 1:09 AM
I kind of thought the Raiders had that one...
JT
Jack Terry · 1:10 AM
Carr looked good to start and I was surprised to see them lose it in the end. But then again this is the Raiders, trained at snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.
JA
Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 1:10 AM
With the SD loss last night, the only AFC West winner has been Denver. KC still has a chance!
JA
Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 1:11 AM
lo
JA
Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 1:11 AM
lol
JT
Jack Terry · 1:11 AM
The best nes for the Jets was over 200 yds passing and a 100+ yard rusher. Keep those stats all season and they should have a good year.
JT
Jack Terry · 1:11 AM
Everybody has a chance! Some just a better chance than others. But your Chiefs are going to be in trouble, losing two defensive players for the season with achilles injuries.
JA
Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 1:12 AM
Yea, I'm dealing with that as well as I can...
JA
Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 1:13 AM
It seemed as though there was a high number of injuries this past week....
JA
Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 1:13 AM
Or maybe that was just MY fantasy team...lol
JT
Jack Terry · 1:14 AM
Just goes to show that the veterans who have roster spots don't give it all during the preseason. They haven't gotten themselves into game shape yet. Someone comes at them full speed, that's when injuries happen.
JA
Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 1:14 AM
Truth...That's where my head is on Jamaal Charles...hasn't got his game speed yet.
JT
Jack Terry · 1:14 AM
Ha! No, there seemed to be a lot. many teams also seemed to exercise more caution and holding out players that in years past they might have kept playing.
JT
Jack Terry · 1:15 AM
There were also a lot of penalties, which is to be expected with the new downfield contact rule, but I saw a lot of refs calling penalties in some games and not in others.
JA
Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 1:16 AM
I believe you are right...keep them out so they dont "really" hurt themselves. That's really smart...
JT
Jack Terry · 1:16 AM
They all say the same thing "These games don't count." Well, they count to make sure you're ready to play the regular season.
JA
Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 1:16 AM
There were fewer penalties in season than in preseason, generally...
JT
Jack Terry · 1:17 AM
There definitely were and I think that's a message that came down from on high in response to all the criticism. Speaking of responding to criticism...
JA
Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 1:17 AM
A fault in the system...Refs can sway a game...
JT
Jack Terry · 1:17 AM
Just look back to the sub refs a couple of years ago and the "fail mary" play between the Seahawks and the Packers.
JA
Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 1:18 AM
penalties happen perpetually on the field..they can pick and choose who to call things on...
JT
Jack Terry · 1:19 AM
Yup. It's no different than any other sport. Getting back to the games I was pretty much wrong across the board when it came to the NFC South. Three of those four teams look good, with the Panthers especially surprising with Cam Newton sitting out we
JT
Jack Terry · 1:20 AM
ek one, I didn't even know Derek Anderson was still in the league.
JA
Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 1:21 AM
Steelers...Browns...best game of the day on Sunday.
JT
Jack Terry · 1:22 AM
It was a good one, and even though they didn't win it has to give a little bit more hope to the fans in Cleveland.
JA
Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 1:22 AM
And all around the world!!!
JA
Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 1:22 AM
That was a fun one and Hoyer surprised us all with a little poise...
JT
Jack Terry · 1:23 AM
More than a little surprise. it's a ton of pressure to win there to begin with, more to do so against the Steelers, and with your backup breathing down your neck...
JA
Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 1:24 AM
Like I said....nice job Hoyer and the Brownies...
JT
Jack Terry · 1:24 AM
Very nice job.
JA
Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 1:24 AM
Miami....thoughts?
JT
Jack Terry · 1:25 AM
I like them. they played confidently, got the numbers they needed to, gave up a little too much yardage on D and I think that might be there downfall, but I think they have a good season in front of them.
JA
Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 1:25 AM
Another case of starter skipping preseason and camp...Brady of course.
JT
Jack Terry · 1:26 AM
Yeah, and i think that this year that might be a problem for them. They aren't nearly as dominant as they used to be. Still the best in their division, but not like it used to be.
JA
Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 1:26 AM
Right...I can see that in several "dynasty" teams in the league...Steelers for instance
JT
Jack Terry · 1:27 AM
Miami is at Buffalo and Oakland with hosting KC in between. hate to say it but I can easily see them 4-0.
JT
Jack Terry · 1:27 AM
I think the Steelers have been on the slide for a while. Not nearly to the level of the Cowboys, but they strike me as a team people expect to be good simply because of their name.
JA
Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 1:28 AM
Could be...Oakland, come on...Buffalo? KC would be their biggest problem...and we lost primaries
JT
Jack Terry · 1:29 AM
That's just it. If KC doesn't learn to score in the next twelve days it could be ugly.
JA
Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 1:29 AM
That is where the "missed preseason" curse lies...I hope...Charles has got to run
JA
Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 1:30 AM
Bowe is being re-instated tomorrow...I read
JT
Jack Terry · 1:30 AM
He does, and if he can, they can stand a chance. Good, they need whatever they can get.
JA
Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 1:30 AM
That should help a little ...moral and all
JT
Jack Terry · 1:31 AM
Since we're looking into the future let's switch over to week 2. What game are you most interested in?
JA
Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 1:32 AM
I was looking over the schedule and only a couple jumped out at me as possible battles...
JT
Jack Terry · 1:33 AM
The first game of the week, Steelers/Ravens is an almost must win for both teams. Ravens lose and their 0-2, while if the Steelers do they can all end up tied.
JA
Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 1:33 AM
The LIons and the Panthers could turn into a shoot out
JA
Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 1:33 AM
You are right about Steelers/Ravens...same division...gotta win for both
JT
Jack Terry · 1:33 AM
Gotta wait and see how healthy Cam is. Although after Anderson's performance, they might say "rest up another week."
JA
Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 1:34 AM
I wish I could say Chiefs Broncos could be a tight one but I strongly doubt it...I'll be watching
JT
Jack Terry · 1:35 AM
I will too. The Broncos are leading the race to become my new team!
JA
Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 1:35 AM
I like the Liions this year...lots of offensive weapons, strong defense, decent specials
JA
Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 1:35 AM
I will have to HATE you Jack...lol
JT
Jack Terry · 1:35 AM
Caldwell is a good coach. this might be the season they finally get it all together.
JT
Jack Terry · 1:36 AM
I'm still weighing my options, but if I'm gonna jump I need to do it soon so I don't look like a bandwagon jumper.
JA
Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 1:36 AM
Wow...I stick with the same team all the time, win or lose. But that;s okay...lol
JA
Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 1:37 AM
I change in the playoffs but it's only temporary...
JT
Jack Terry · 1:37 AM
Your team isn't owned by Jerry "I did it all on my own" Jones!
JA
Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 1:37 AM
if the Chiefs are gone...oh yea, the Jerry thing...sorry
JT
Jack Terry · 1:37 AM
Monday Night Football this week should be good with the Eagles/Colts. two high powered offenses that liek to work quickly.
JA
Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 1:38 AM
Yea, I was about to say that...Colts are going to be okay this year
JT
Jack Terry · 1:38 AM
I think the Colts are going to be good for many years.
JA
Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 1:38 AM
Also, Pats and Vikes...that one might get interesting...
JA
Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 1:39 AM
With the Pats on a low and the Vikes on a high, it could get...fun
JT
Jack Terry · 1:39 AM
I forgot about the Vikings! That was a game that surprised me. Granted, the rams are toast without a high caliber QB but you know how I feel about Matt Cassel.
JA
Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 1:40 AM
I was blown away...The Vikings don't win!
JA
Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 1:40 AM
I don't care for Cassel mucheither. He did nothing for KC
JT
Jack Terry · 1:41 AM
hell no they don't! They need to get their wins in early before that outdoor stadium of theirs turns into a popsicle!
JA
Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 1:41 AM
hahaha...so true
JA
Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 1:41 AM
Normally they don't play into January so it shouldn't be a problem.
JT
Jack Terry · 1:42 AM
Ha! Well, five of their last 8 games are at home, and a 6th is in Chicago. They need to be at least 6-2 hitting that stretch or they will be in trouble.
JA
Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 1:43 AM
Okay, one question...Matt Ryan...tendency or trend? Will he continue his monumental play against Cincinati?
JT
Jack Terry · 1:43 AM
You mean Matty Ice? I like him and I know he has the talent, but Cincy has a solid defense. He may have a bit of a hiccup this week.
JA
Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 1:44 AM
He's got amazing receivers...roddy White, Julio Jones...
JT
Jack Terry · 1:45 AM
Scratch what I said. The Bungles gave up over 300 yards last week, and Falcco isn't normally a prolific passer. Ryan and the Falcons should be just fine.
JA
Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 1:45 AM
Flacco...now you're tawking about someone off their game...competition for Romo!!
JT
Jack Terry · 1:46 AM
Romo has no competition. he is in a (lack of) class by himself!!
JA
Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 1:46 AM
I say Steelers over Ravens by at least 10...
JT
Jack Terry · 1:46 AM
Yeah, that should be an easy pick.
JA
Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 1:46 AM
Do the Dophins go 2-0 against buffalo?
JT
Jack Terry · 1:47 AM
In a word, yes! I think the Bills are just an average team and stole one against Chicago.
JA
Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 1:47 AM
Does Cleveland keep up the fight against Breez and the Saints?
JT
Jack Terry · 1:47 AM
And the Dolphins are fortunate to get their away game in Buffalo out of the way now when it's warm.
JA
Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 1:48 AM
Lost in the last seconds last week against Pitts
JT
Jack Terry · 1:48 AM
I think they make it a game. I don't know if I see them winning it, but I think they could. The Saints strike me a really talented team that can be wildly inconsistent.
JA
Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 1:49 AM
I see the Saints by a TD...but they know the Browns were there.
JT
Jack Terry · 1:49 AM
And with it being in Cleveland, maybe the dawg Pound can help fire them up.
JT
Jack Terry · 1:50 AM
Since your team just played the Titans, any advice for the Cowboys? Other than to not turn it over all the time?
JA
Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 1:50 AM
Play Weeden.
JT
Jack Terry · 1:51 AM
hahahahahahahaha! That's awesome. I was watching the game this past week and was half expecting Aikman to throw off the tie, run out of the booth and take over.
JA
Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 1:51 AM
I think that it's going to be another spanking, Jack. I'm sorry.
JT
Jack Terry · 1:52 AM
Not as sorry as the Cowboys are. They are misfiring on all cylinders.
JA
Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 1:52 AM
I took it...KC looked like warmed over dog crap...and the Titans looked good..somewhat. But D...wow
JA
Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 1:52 AM
I think Dallas will be lucky to win 5 games this season.
JT
Jack Terry · 1:53 AM
5 might just be the magic number...
JA
Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 1:53 AM
LOL...
JT
Jack Terry · 1:53 AM
The only thing that saves them is playing in a division that stinks!
JA
Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 1:54 AM
Seahawks Chargers...Philip Rivers doesn't like to lose but Seattle is a machine...
JT
Jack Terry · 1:55 AM
I just looked at the schedule. I see them beating the Rams and the Jags, and taking 4 out of 6 in their division, for a final record of 6-10.
JA
Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 1:55 AM
Optimist!
JT
Jack Terry · 1:55 AM
Chargers don't have a chance. I know we're supposed to like them because they're the closest thing the NFL has to an LA team, but they just don't get it done.
JT
Jack Terry · 1:55 AM
And especially not against a team stacked like the Seahawks.
JA
Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 1:55 AM
Any surprise predictions for Week 2?
JT
Jack Terry · 1:56 AM
Jets over Packers.
JA
Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 1:57 AM
Wow...that would do it...shocker!
JT
Jack Terry · 1:57 AM
And honestly when I review the whole week, I think the only other game that seems like it isn't obvious is Rams/Bucs.
JT
Jack Terry · 1:57 AM
If the Jets can repeat what they did, they have a shot.
JA
Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 1:58 AM
The packdidn't look all that great last week agains the seahawks. I can see something catching them off guard again in week 2
JA
Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 1:59 AM
0-2 Giants for sure and likely the Ravens
JT
Jack Terry · 1:59 AM
That's just it. They're another team people hype because of their legacy. Rogers is a Hall of Famer, Hawk and Matthews are studs on D, but they need more than that.
JT
Jack Terry · 1:59 AM
Yes on both of those predicitions, and it couldn't happen to two better teams! ;-)
JA
Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 1:59 AM
Chiefs too...0-2 to start
JT
Jack Terry · 2:00 AM
Sorry. But if it makes you feel any better my team will be right there in the basment with you.
JA
Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle · 2:00 AM
Well, Jack this has been a great time...I look forward to tawking next week!!
JT
Jack Terry · 2:01 AM
I was just going to say the hour has come to a close. Always a pleasure tawking the NFL with you. See you next week!
