Creative activists Eleanor Goldfield and Lee Camp talk activist art and it's role in raising socio-political awareness.

My choice of activist art would of course, be postcards due primarily to their exposure while traveling along their wonderful journey.

Hey everyone! Welcome to our weekly Revolting tawk :) And hello to my talented and handsome co-host Lee :)

Hey everyone! Welcome to our weekly Revolting tawk :) And hello to my talented and handsome co-host Lee :)
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 10:59 PM

Sorry - gremlins in my keyboard
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 10:59 PM

Today we're talking about the world of activist art or art with any kinda point/message/agenda
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:00 PM

We're going to split it up into a few sections so we can keep the conversation moving
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:00 PM

First off - PLEASE tell people to come here now. Just take 2 seconds and post this URL on your FB and Twitter and Christian Mingle accounts.
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:01 PM

For the UK people here, I love that "ChristianMingle.com" is only one letter off from "ChristianMinge.com" which is very different.

hello eleanor and lee

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:01 PM

So...art. Is it activism or escapism?
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:01 PM

Lee, already off on a comedic tangent ;)
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:01 PM

That's what I do.
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:01 PM

What was your question, El?
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:02 PM

It's gonna be one of those herding cats days, isn't it? ;)
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:02 PM

I'm curious as to whether people feel that art is a form of escapism or is a form of activism
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:02 PM

for example, rothko can't really be considered activist
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:02 PM

Or both?
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:02 PM

but i adore getting lost in his art
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:03 PM

Throw out some examples.
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:03 PM

For the record guys, I totally agree :)
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:03 PM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

well, eleanor is can be both of course

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:03 PM

El, do you think more people listen to your music because of the sound or because of the point? And obviously there are those coming for both, but which side draws more?
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:03 PM

★ Spotlighted from Tim Hayes

I think the best is a combination of both

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:04 PM

On a random night, I'd say it's more the music.
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:04 PM

Which is sort of the point, in my mind
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:04 PM

@Robin - are you familiar with Backbone Campaign
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:04 PM

They do projections and light shows on buildings too - really cool
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:04 PM

Yeah, so using the art as a trick to teach 'em something?
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:04 PM

you should check them out
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:05 PM

@Lee - yes.
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:05 PM

Freda did the cover to my new comedy special!
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:05 PM

It kicks ass.
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:05 PM

★ Spotlighted from Tim Hayes

I am a fan of Roger Waters who has over the years mixed his artistic vision with his political views.

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:05 PM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

i like the huge street art projects on buildings. they can be both. banksy and such.

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:05 PM

Art, well in my case music, is a medium that brings people together across all sorts of social lines
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:05 PM

Lucy, your stuff kicks ass as well.
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:06 PM

Feed someone a chocolate covered pill, they're more likely to swallow as opposed to covering it with the simple bitter facts.
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:06 PM

Yes - Lucy's stuff is bad ass
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:06 PM

★ Spotlighted from Lucy Dyer

and then there's the awesome Anthony Freda

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:06 PM

@Wes - can it reflect a thriving society?
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:06 PM

I enjoy playing to the choir, but I have to admit, it's more fun when you have a mixed audience who are experiencing what I do for the first time. Whenever I have full agreement from the audience, it's not as fun.
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:06 PM

@Lee - I agree with that.
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:06 PM

I kind of enjoy being heckled - sometimes
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:07 PM

for me, art is one more way to get the message out there. Hi to all :)
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:07 PM

@Wes - I agree with you on the point of art mirroring life
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:07 PM

★ Spotlighted from Wes Lee

Art should reflect a decaying society... well thats the art I like.. honest art

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:07 PM

Ha. Dealing with hecklers during music is probably quite different.
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:07 PM

★ Spotlighted from Wes Lee

if it was thriving.. yes

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:08 PM

Yeah, Markus, it's a completely different vibe. It's no fun when I call out religion or go after something that is "touchy" to most people but because I have a group of awesome people in the audience, no one is shocked. Ha.
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:08 PM

why's that Lee? Different kind of energy in the room?
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:08 PM

@Robin - that's an interesting point too - to focus not just on the true ills of humanity but to focus on the beauty that surrounds us, and getting people to see that
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:08 PM

Robin - What kind of art do you do?
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:08 PM

★ Spotlighted from Wes Lee

@Lee. Do you ever get nervous when going ballsout on the powers that be?

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:09 PM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

in my work, i try to depict a reverence and awe of nature, mostly. to draw attention to how important it is to respect and take care of the planet.

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:09 PM

Wes - I don't really get nervous about that. When I'm making the strongest points is when it's perhaps the easiest for me. I get more nervous when I'm just trying to be straight funny and it feels like people aren't coming along.
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:09 PM

(which is NEVER because I'm so awesome)
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:09 PM

@Robin - do you consider your art activist or escapist?
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:10 PM

(kidding)
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:10 PM

@Tim - could you give an example
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:10 PM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

painting things i love like extremem close up of flowers, water, people, mountain scenery, etc.

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:10 PM

Tim - That's interesting. So do you feel you've failed if you evoke fear?
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:11 PM

★ Spotlighted from Tim Hayes

I try to show people things they might not get the opportunity to see otherwise. And hopefully show them a different way to view things in the process. Preferably with respect instead of fear

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:11 PM

It's interesting also to think that some artists, such as yourself Robin, create because they have a vision outside of a characterization. For myself, having been in political and non-political bands, having done political and non-political creative
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:11 PM

work, I always think of that distinction
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:11 PM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

neither, eleanor. hadn't thought about that. it is definitely a message i want to get out though.

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:12 PM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

right on tim.

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:12 PM

★ Spotlighted from Johnathonfall thethird

Good activist art should be exhilarating & fun.

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:12 PM

Yeah Lee - get on that. Get Lucy some more pictures to deface with her art!
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:12 PM

El - How different is it for you to be in a political band now? Do you feel it constantly or is not always at the front of your mind?
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:12 PM

It's always something I'm conscious of
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:12 PM

I work it into how I present myself on stage, in between songs.
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:13 PM

★ Spotlighted from Lucy Dyer

i have to say that i love doing the quote images i do. i am trying to broaden what i do and not do so much people i know so much. there';s only so many Lee pics about to deface!

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:13 PM

Tim - That's awesome. And it brings up the genre of activist art that is simply activist by the fact that it informs people about a thing they may have been ignorant about.
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:13 PM

It's the message that is key, the music is the medium. Luckily, I am surrounded by phenomenal musicians
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:13 PM

It might not actively say "save these bears" but by getting people to appreciate them, it is fostering that feeling.
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:13 PM

@Markus - I mean some artists create without thinking about where it will land in terms of activism or escapism
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:13 PM

★ Spotlighted from Johnathonfall thethird

One should have fun when exposing crooks & liars.

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:13 PM

★ Spotlighted from Tim Hayes

I am a wildlife photographer and my main interest is in the Black Bear population of Northwestern Washington. Alot of people have a built in fear of bears that is unwarranted in my experiance,

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:13 PM

I was saying I always consider it for my own projects.
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:14 PM

[Quite note: I have to dip out for 10 mins. I will be back quite soon. Have no fear!!]
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:14 PM

@Eleneanor what do you mean by 'outside of characterization'?
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:14 PM

[But you should probably decide who will eat who first in the case all hell breaks loose.]
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:14 PM

★ Spotlighted from Lucy Dyer

to me activism art is something that touches someone deep enough to make them express it the way they know how.

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:14 PM

★ Spotlighted from Wes Lee

Psychopaths in suits. How can we incorporate making fun of them in Pop Art?

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:14 PM

@Wes - good question. I'd have the visual gurus in the audience take that one :)
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:15 PM

@Lucy - I feel that way often as well.
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:15 PM

But the general goal of your art - what you want it to convey - does that remain?
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:15 PM

@Johnathonfall - I'm just getting into painting again, but I'm a HELLUVA lot better of a writer
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:15 PM

★ Spotlighted from Lucy Dyer

i never know how the art i make is gonna turn out. i start with an idea but it rarely finishes out that way

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:16 PM

that's a good point too - writing as a form of art. how far does that stretch tho?
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:16 PM

would we consider a blog post art, or an article on say truthdig art?
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:16 PM

★ Spotlighted from Johnathonfall thethird

Many of us can't draw or paint, but we can write.

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:16 PM

@Lucy - absolutely - that'd be awesome :)
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:16 PM

★ Spotlighted from Tim Hayes

I think that is part of the fun of creating. Just being on the ride and seeing how it comes out.

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:16 PM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

writing is wonderful

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:16 PM

@Michael - the same could be said for painting or music
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:16 PM

I mean hell - I've got 7 notes!
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:17 PM

and somehow have to make them sound different and interesting
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:17 PM

★ Spotlighted from Lucy Dyer

hey Eleanor, maybe i can turn some of your words into images later? been awesome doing so so far

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:17 PM

It's a testament to human ingenuity i'd say - that we can continue to come up with new art, new writings, new songs
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:17 PM

★ Spotlighted from Michael Micklow

Writing is the hardest thing in the world to do. So much has already been done. But it is a worthwhile endeavor. Finding that perfect wording -- nothing beats it.

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:17 PM

We may be headed down the rabbits hole of "what is art"
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:18 PM

Here's a question for you:
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:18 PM

★ Spotlighted from Tim Hayes

I think it could be, if it creates something as you read it. A good mental image of what the writer is trying to convey, a mood, or emotion.

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:18 PM

★ Spotlighted from Lucy Dyer

i cant write for toffee. my mind works faster than my fingers do,so i miss SO many words out,or the spelling goes to pot lol

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:19 PM

is art lacking in the mainstream or is there more in the underground? if so, how do we get to it?
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:19 PM

hunter s thompson often compared his writing process to music
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:19 PM

@lucy - that's a good point too.
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:19 PM

★ Spotlighted from Michael Micklow

Certainly. I am neither musically nor painting inclined, but I can begin to see that as being the same case. It is a process that can't be forced. You sorta have to listen to what the piece is saying and go with it.

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:19 PM

I often get a lot of inspiration from images, but not typically the ones I creat :)
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:20 PM

@Wes - ha, very true :)
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:20 PM

★ Spotlighted from Lucy Dyer

dont words create pictures in your mind? sometimes everone needs words to get their creative juices flowing

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:20 PM

but with digital platforms, it seems easier than ever before to get underground
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:20 PM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

i do lots of different kinds of things for creativity. it has been interesting to see the process is the same for all, the flow of it, too.

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:20 PM

★ Spotlighted from Johnathonfall thethird

The NSA doesn't know how to spy on your writing.

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:20 PM

like two of my favorite sites are pretty small when compared to say the kind of traffic the smithsonian might get, but there fucking fantastic
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:20 PM

★ Spotlighted from Wes Lee

Underground is much better. and you have to search hard.. thats when we stumble upon people like you and Lee

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:21 PM

@Michael - I completely agree.
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:22 PM

★ Spotlighted from Wes Lee

Definitely agree, we start to see a shift. People rather alternative news these days. its great

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:22 PM

My generation (Gen Y) seems obsessed with this idea of escapism - mainstream music is about as vapid as you can get
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:22 PM

★ Spotlighted from Michael Micklow

I think art has been co-opted in the mainstream, where you have tepid forms of entertainment which serve the status quo. Citcoms co-opt stand-up, Hollywood co-opts independent artistic films. But with increase in tech those gatekeepers r crumbling.

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:22 PM

@Robin - that sounds a lot like Hunter S Thompson (he's getting a lot of play here) suggesting that you create whilst hungover
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:22 PM

Thank you, Michael!
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:23 PM

And you're absolutely right that even standup is far less free than it once was.
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:23 PM

★ Spotlighted from Lucy Dyer

i blame Lee for getting me to look at "underground" news places. its a big friggin world out there. love finding shit that no-one has.

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:23 PM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

i read that being kind of tired and distracted lends itself to getting "in the zone" for creativity

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:23 PM

I attribute that to a) people wanting to get rich from stand up rather than just wanting to do it
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:23 PM

@Michael - very true. Just watch a morning show
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:23 PM

that'll make you doubt both intelligent design and evolution
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:23 PM

and b) the big tv networks making sure most of what is said keeps within a small box of acceptable thought
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:23 PM

★ Spotlighted from Michael Micklow

Addendum: even stand-up has been co-opted some, except for Lee's stuff, which is hard-hitting and carries on the legacy of Hicks and Carlin.

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:24 PM

★ Spotlighted from Michael Micklow

Ya Lucy -- news outside the usual corporate feed is totally different. They actually dig and muckrake real fucking news rather than looking at what is trending on YT.

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:24 PM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

= D good ol' Hunter S.

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:24 PM

a lot of people think stand up is completely allowed on TV now because you can curse and tell rape jokes. But that's not what is forbidden. What's forbidden is standup that questions the corporatocracy
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:24 PM

questions the advertisers and the marketing and the system of consumerism
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:24 PM

★ Spotlighted from Wes Lee

I'm ready for Lee's new comedy! HELL YEAH

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:25 PM

@Lee - it's the same with music, photography, visual art and film
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:25 PM

@Lee are you familiar with Stewart Lee?
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:25 PM

I know Zach and he's a good guy but he is very much a mainstream democrat, I think.
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:25 PM

There's a reason documentaries like Dirty Wars have to do online releases and Thor fucking gets blockbuster status
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:25 PM

He actually did something bold with his "campaign" movie which went after the "Moch Bros"
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:25 PM

which was an analogy for the "koch bros"
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:26 PM

★ Spotlighted from Michael Micklow

@ Lee, ya man. It has become a sort of careerism for them. Plus they can venture out. I mean you have the likes of Zach Galafanakis who has done his Hangover movies now. And doing propaganda for Obama with his Between Two Ferns.

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:26 PM

and at the end of the movie they buy the election, which was trying to teach americans something important.
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:26 PM

Yes, I know Stuart Lee. I'm actually friendly with him. One of the greatest stand ups working today. Being on a few shows with him are some of the highlights of my career.
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:27 PM

EVERYBODY needs to check out Stuart Lee if you haven't.
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:27 PM

So - I'm curious then as well. Do you feel it's the "job" of politically conscious artists to create activist art?
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:27 PM

★ Spotlighted from Michael Micklow

@ Lee, ya maybe that is an exaggeration to say it was propaganda, but it just seemed like a shameless plug. I love his early stuff, like at the Onion. O my fuck that shit is funny.

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:28 PM

Hmmm. There are a lot of comedians I love who are not political - like Hedberg or Stephen Wright or others.
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:28 PM

So I don't feel everybody with a voice has an obligation, but I do feel our world desperately needs it.
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:28 PM

★ Spotlighted from Michael Micklow

Ya I heard that movie was good. It was a Koch-block, which is always good, considering they are straight effing us in the ass.

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:28 PM

True - and I'll be the first to admit that I love some good british comedy or a fitness blog to escape the world with
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:28 PM

For some, it's a job and a passion :)
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:29 PM

@Tim - I agree with that
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:29 PM

You should never try to force your art or someone elses' for that matter to be something it isn't
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:29 PM

but i do believe artists are the voice of a generation
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:29 PM

★ Spotlighted from Wes Lee

Politically conscience. Art is not a job:p

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:29 PM

I consider it both my job and my passion but I wouldn't demand that every artist has to be political.
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:29 PM

and right now our generation isn't saying much of substance
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:29 PM

@Lee that's awesome to know! and, yes, he is well worth a loof for thos who aren't familiar
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:29 PM

★ Spotlighted from Michael Micklow

Eleanor, yes! Art and politics are one and the same. We need more jesters looking the king in the face and saying the brutal truth. I think humor is inherently involved with transformation, poking and prodding status quo.

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:29 PM

Thanks Michael! :)
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:29 PM

★ Spotlighted from Tim Hayes

Not so much a job. I think that it has to be something that the artists loves to do. It has to come from a place of passion, otherwise it comes across as empty and just trying to pander to a certain group.

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:30 PM

@Wes - well, unfortunately you have to make money
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:30 PM

By the way guys, if you want to see some artist worlds colliding, here's the intro to my new comedy special - done to the tune of "Folk Devils" by Eleanor's band. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_NGAg8e_Z2E
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:30 PM

and what better way to make money than doing something you love
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:30 PM

the first time i got paid to sing, i was fucking ecstatic
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:30 PM

★ Spotlighted from Michael Micklow

Eleanor, yes. "Folk Devils" is def. in that same vein. True art.

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:30 PM

i don't think that's a bad thing
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:30 PM

@all what gave you folks your passion for art and politics?
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:31 PM

★ Spotlighted from Wes Lee

sorry Eleanor.. I'm just not liking the words job and art in the same sentence.. Job makes me think of "money"

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:31 PM

Yeah, depends on the definition of job. I don't like when non-artistic people doubt that being a comedian can be a job. Most artists have dealt with the "when ya gonna get a real job" question.
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:31 PM

And of course it's bullshit.
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:31 PM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

markus,,, observation, indignation, love, hate, wanting a change.

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:31 PM

★ Spotlighted from Tim Hayes

I don't think of what I do as a job because I never looked forward to any job I have had as much as I look forward to what I do now. I suppose it is all in perception

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:31 PM

And yes - check out Lee's teaser for his new special! You can see the Folk Devils video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C85R0q3ysMQ
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:31 PM

Wes - Yes, I was in Peter Joseph's Culture In Decline
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:32 PM

And have performed at TZM festivals
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:32 PM

★ Spotlighted from Wes Lee

Idk if you guys are TZM appreciaters

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:33 PM

★ Spotlighted from Michael Micklow

Lee, yes true. But look at the legendary comics. I mean stand-up got its start with Lenny Bruce saying shit that wasn't allowed or was taboo, shaking up biz as usual.

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:33 PM

★ Spotlighted from Wes Lee

I saw that bro. You did an interview as well. great stuff man

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:33 PM

★ Spotlighted from Lucy Dyer

I guess its who you make your money from and what you do with it.

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:33 PM

Michael - You're right. And most of the guys who truly spoke out slowly got sidelined by the mainstream networks. Bruce was arrested time and again for his speech.
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:33 PM

@Markus - that's great company to have
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:33 PM

Dick Gregory was pushed out of the clubs he used to play. Hicks was censored by Letterman. Carlin's language went to the supreme court.
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:34 PM

★ Spotlighted from Wes Lee

That is a very impressive moment in you career if you ask me @ Lee

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:34 PM

for me my political awareness was woken by being in a riot at the age of 14. Suddenly the only person who seemed to have my worldview was Bill Hicks
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:34 PM

Yeah, the right kind of thought is very scary to the ruling elite.
Lee Camp

Bill Hicks,to me,taught me SO much. and now we have these guys - the hosts - to take over. and a damn fine job they are doing too.

Carlin was legendary

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:35 PM

Not sure if HBO censored him. But the radio waves certainly did.
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:35 PM

@Lucy - there are ways of getting the message out due to digital platforms we never had access to before
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:36 PM

Dick Gregory is on tour with Paul Mooney I believe
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:36 PM

It of course makes it more difficult to be "mainstream acceptable"
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:36 PM

★ Spotlighted from Michael Micklow

Lee, well said. Ya, long history of comic dissent. Didn't Carlin get censored from swearing for a time? On HBO??

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:36 PM

@Keef - I've seen some in LA galleries
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:36 PM

★ Spotlighted from Lucy Dyer

but getting a message across about something you are passionate about can be hard. what if the general public dont see what you do? altho, that can be great too. give you a different point of view

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:36 PM

Hey everybody - Keef Ward runs an AMAZING FB page called "Art with Teeth" - I fucking love it.
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:36 PM

not as much as i would like but there seem to be collectives and galleries, particularly around DTLA that embrace highly politicized works
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:36 PM

★ Spotlighted from Wes Lee

True, and we are brewing up a whole new level of thought. Global awakening perhaps

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:37 PM

What's your guys's feelings on activist art being in galleries? I'd really hoped to see more of that here in NYC. Sadly, largely vague and vapid work. Spine-free!
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:37 PM

markus - not all art can be painting on a building.
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:37 PM

And while I love artists who risk arrest, they shouldn't HAVE to risk arrest to show their art.
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:37 PM

@Eleanor - very true. and one reason why people are getting off their fat asses and doing something about. its great to see

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:38 PM

i don't see the need for art to hang in galleries when Banksy is spraying public walls
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:38 PM

★ Spotlighted from Zolan Machado

We have the ability to get messages out more easily, it's just difficult getting them recognized over all of the cat photos sometimes..

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:38 PM

@Keef - I don't think that's necessarily true.
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:38 PM

Like I said, there are some galleries in LA that show activist art
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:39 PM

★ Spotlighted from Lucy Dyer

@Keef - i would love to see that kind of art in galleries more but i dont think it will be for a while. it goes against what the fat cats who pay for the galleries want

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:39 PM

I hate to beat a dead horse because we mention this every tawk - but this is why the internet MUST remain free. You would never find out about all this great art, music, comedy, etc. without a free and open internet.
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:39 PM

So, activism and art/commerce can only exist outside the white walls? (until you're as big as Banksy? Unacceptable!)
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:39 PM

I don't know about the "big" ones but DTLA is becoming known for having some great artists and none of these works are tremendously expensive so they're not Banksy status
Lee Camp

El - Question, I've never seen an interview with Muse. Do they actually care about things or did they just know "uprising" anthem songs were the way to get people excited?
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:43 PM

more recently, there's The King Blues...
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:43 PM

@Lee - I don't actually know the answer to that

I wonder why the discrepancy between East coast and West coast gallerists. Seems there's a TON more spicy work being shown out West. The opposite of what I expected out here.
Lee Camp
