Are you prepping for the upcoming climate change chaos? How? We'd love to know.

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:00 AM

Welcome all! Say hi to the talented Eleanor Goldfield, my cohost. TONIGHT we're covering climate chaos!
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:00 AM

Hey everyone! Thanks for joining us!
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:00 AM

And hello Lee - I hope the snow is treating you well :)
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:00 AM

We're gonna talk about how we're prepping, whether we're prepping and what THE FUCK we can do about it. ...And we're gonna make that funny... sometimes.
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:01 AM

First off, PLEASE tell people that you're here on FB and Twitter and shit. Just paste the link and tell them to come over.

Do everything you can to build and enhance local systems, sorry no real solutions people will actually do til its too late, climate change we are experiencing now was from human actions 40 years ago, all we can do is adapt

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:01 AM

★ Spotlighted from Lucy Dyer

hey eleanor and lee!! hope all is good with you guys :-)

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:01 AM

Humans are incredibly adaptable, @Global Risk (apt name, by the way)
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:02 AM

Adapting is not all we can do - it's one of the things we can do.
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:02 AM

Growing and building local systems, shifting our energy paradigm as well - these are huge points. But I do'nt agree in saying we can only adapt.
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:02 AM

★ Spotlighted from Lucy Dyer

revolution revolution!....oooops sorry, that should be evolution, evolution!!!

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:02 AM

both, lucy ;)
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:03 AM

Are people doing things to prep? Is anybody changing their behavior?
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:03 AM

This article in the guardian is about people prepping - - http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/feb/17/time-to-join-preppers-survive-climate-change-apocalypse
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:03 AM

★ Spotlighted from Taylor Thorington

I favor prevention than preparation for failure

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:03 AM

They're dealing with crazy flooding in the UK.
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:03 AM

I also found this: http://www.icleiusa.org/action-center/planning/adaptation-guidebook
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:04 AM

It's rather wordy and long-winded but there are some strong bullet points in there
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:04 AM

And we keep talking about various ways to block the worst pain - such as levees around NYC - but can't we do better than that? Better than just trying to block out the natural destruction we're creating?
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:04 AM

★ Spotlighted from Lucy Dyer

you know some of the island that i live on is gonna fall into the sea

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:04 AM

★ Spotlighted from Taylor Thorington

Hey Lee, any new news on that "ark" thing those rich folks were building?

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:04 AM

You mean the island?
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:05 AM

There's no new news, but yeah, it's crazy. It will be located off Nigeria.
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:05 AM

★ Spotlighted from Taylor Thorington

Yes, that one.

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:05 AM

I think for the most part, the band-aids on cancer that our gov't slap on major issues is certainly not the best we can do, just the best a corporate gov't will do
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:05 AM

And we'll see more and more of that - rich people finding ways to "buy" their way around climate change
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:05 AM

★ Spotlighted from Reginald Schluffenstein

Maybe we should just let humanity undo itself... ;)

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:05 AM

apparently, obama is pushing to set aside $1bn for climate change initiatives.
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:06 AM

EG - Would things be different if we had a non-corporate gov't?
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:06 AM

★ Spotlighted from Sophia Belita

why would we do that reginald? we have the capacity to do so much better.

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:06 AM

I think they absolutely would, Lee
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:06 AM

for example, a president pushing for $1bn in support of climate change prep and prevention would actually be that
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:07 AM

(I agree. I was just playin' devil's advocate)
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:07 AM

★ Spotlighted from Reginald Schluffenstein

I know, Sophia.... pardon my misanthropy.

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:07 AM

of which all will go to natural gas TV ads

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:07 AM

it wouldn't be lip service to the people while scratching the backs of corporate america
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:07 AM

I figured as much - I think it's good to throw it out there tho. I like my soap box :)
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:07 AM

If we honestly cared about the future, we would be getting all our energy from sun, wind, geothermal
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:07 AM

★ Spotlighted from Nicholas Thulin

We need the elected officials who believe that "only god can destroy this earth" out of office and put some real scientists in their place

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:08 AM

the fact that every damn house and structure in CA doesn't have solar panels is a disgrace
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:08 AM

it rains about one day a year out here
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:08 AM

That is ridiculous. You guys have more sun than vapidness out there!
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:08 AM

Is that a word?
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:09 AM

oooo, that's a close race.
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:09 AM

It is now a word.
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:09 AM

vapidness and sunshine
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:09 AM

that's the name of my next album
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:09 AM

That's the name of the hotel I stayed in last time I was there.
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:09 AM

★ Spotlighted from Reginald Schluffenstein

Is it that belief, or is it simply the ignorance that Money can do no wrong. The defense seems to be that Capitalism is so great, that when it comes time to clean the environment, it'll just create more jobs...

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:10 AM

I think it's largely that most of the change needed is not "politically feasible" because corporations are funding everyone.
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:10 AM

Any large change MUST largely benefit corporations or else it's cut down quickly.
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:10 AM

I agree. There are so many creative and scientifically mind-blowing forms of alternative energy out there.
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:10 AM

But they get squashed
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:11 AM

A lot like there's an underground wonderland of LA's old trolley system - literally buried by car companies
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:11 AM

What kind of climate change are people noticing in their areas? Lucy mentioned that her island is falling apart. Anybody else?
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:11 AM

Eleanor - Any fun with forest fires this year in LA?
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:11 AM

CA is experiencing the biggest drought in recorded history.
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:11 AM

So far, I am not on fire.
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:11 AM

But the day is young
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:11 AM

Meanwhile, people are watering their sidewalks in Beverly Hills.
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:11 AM

Longer summers and colder winters here in FL. also, Hurricanes seem to be shifting their path away from us and towards the Eastern Seaboard.

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:12 AM

hahaha - oh that was a bad one.
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:12 AM

★ Spotlighted from Global Risk

Government is not going to solve this problem, spending money that does not exist is not the answer, look up the power of doing stuff by the Transition Town movement, grassroots change and power down, will happen anyway, matter of react or proact

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:12 AM

Well, even though money is imaginary wealth, it can still get things done. If we put billions into alternative energy, we could turn things around.
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:12 AM

It seems that the weather swings are more extreme in NW IN.

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:13 AM

I was caught in tornadoes a few hours outside Chicago this year
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:13 AM

Apparently it was the most tornadoes in one weekend they'd ever seen - at least that time of year.
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:14 AM

According to people who used to live in LA 20-25 years ago, seasons were more prominent and it never got above 90 degrees or so. Now it's consistently above that in the summer and I can't remember a season in the time that I've been here
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:14 AM

★ Spotlighted from Reginald Schluffenstein

What is prepping for the climate change? Should I have stock piles of food? :)

@ reginald. Stockpiling isn't particularly necessary yet, but knowing how to rig up a greenhouse and find food naturally around you is a good way to start.

probably the biggest threat is severe weather affecting nuclear power plants, not considered typically when discussing climate change, we have precidents

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:15 AM

@Blake - I did see that.
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:16 AM

Terrifying
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:16 AM

How should we be prepping? I haven't done shit.
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:16 AM

Beautiful but frightening
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:16 AM

except wear two pairs of underwear.
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:16 AM

Nor have I, to be honest.
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:16 AM

★ Spotlighted from Reginald Schluffenstein

Is it legal to forage for your own food? What about the Montana guy that got arrested for it?

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:16 AM

★ Spotlighted from Mitchell Heldt

Prepping for climate change depends on where you are from. As the avg global temp goes up the avg rel humidity goes down but the avg absolute humidity goes up. So, there is more water in the atmosphere than ever yet, it is harder to pull out of air

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:16 AM

In LA it's not even legal to give homeless people food.
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:16 AM

★ Spotlighted from Taylor Thorington

Weapons, knowledge, supplies, involvement in community.

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:16 AM

Article today said it's also now illegal in SC to feed the homeless - you have to get a permit.
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:17 AM

★ Spotlighted from Taylor Thorington

@ reginald, It's not illegal if you don't get caught

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:17 AM

There seems to be a camp of people that are prepping for the end of days. Is that in the same vein as this?
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:17 AM

So we need to get really good and stealthy at feeding the homeless!
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:17 AM

Bc I don't think I'll be investing in an arsenal anytime soon
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:17 AM

★ Spotlighted from Mitchell Heldt

Later this week and next week, the melting snow will absorb water like a sponge. When it finally lets loose there will be many floods in places that people do not expect floods

Those laws are hysterical...but real.

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:18 AM

Lee, can we prep? Other than watching the aforementioned "Day After Tomorrow" we really don't know what is coming...so how can we prep? We are all just screwed!

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:18 AM

But apparently people are stocking up on guns because they keep killing each other for loud music and shit.
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:18 AM

I'd kill for my music ;)
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:18 AM

★ Spotlighted from Taylor Thorington

@ elanor, I don't think an arsenal is necessary. Just something to help you forage if need be.

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:18 AM

Absolutely Taylor.
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:18 AM

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:18 AM

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:18 AM

★ Spotlighted from Reginald Schluffenstein

Not to be a quitter... but if it comes down to people's stockpiles of food and arsenals... I'm just fine untethering from the earthly realm....

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:19 AM

Yeah, reading that guardian article I kinda thought "If we get to the point that you're running into the woods, then your real problem will be the crazy wars breaking out, not the weather."

No amount of prepping can save us from everything. We have to eat, drink and breathe. You can't hoard air like the SpaceBalls air-in-a-can gag. <sigh>

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:21 AM

We're almost to the air in a can scenario - I mean if some cities have crazy polluted air and the rich and afford to move but the poor can't, then we'll be at spaceballs level.

Why can't Canada refine all that oil themselves?

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:21 AM

★ Spotlighted from Katie Klabusich

Agreed. It is absolutely insane that we can't move water around. The fucking Romans could move water around.

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:21 AM

Apparently either the shipping or the refining capabilities are not enough.
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:21 AM

★ Spotlighted from Mitchell Heldt

If we had a national sewage system for growing algae in the sunshine states there would be more freshwater than california could handle as a by product.

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:21 AM

I think in many ways the Roman empire was far more advanced
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:22 AM

★ Spotlighted from Katie Klabusich

Both -- they don't have the refining capacity.

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:22 AM

★ Spotlighted from Reginald Schluffenstein

Again, I think this all stems back to our root of the love of money. Wetiko. Instead of prepping individual to survive the fallout, we need to address the policies that bring it about.

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:22 AM

I agree, Reginald, we should be changing our mindset completely.
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:22 AM

we need a thought revolution.
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:22 AM

@Mitchell - absolutely. There are SO many phenomenal, low cost, low impact ideas out there
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:22 AM

EG - How do you figure?
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:22 AM

how do I figure - the Romans?
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:22 AM

Because they wore little cloths?
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:23 AM

well, for one, they had bath houses and wine was mandatory at every meal.

I know the solution, have more debates with idiots and Bill Nye

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:24 AM

★ Spotlighted from Reginald Schluffenstein

as long of pollution is cheaper than clean air, and cheap is a priority... we really have no way out.

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:24 AM

Bill Nye should not have dignified that by showing up!
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:24 AM

★ Spotlighted from Katie Klabusich

Solar and wind can really provide energy that's cheaper in the long run, etc etc. The people with the power just don't care. They've never had to worry about their needs, so it doesn't occur to worry about anyone else's.

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:24 AM

@Katie - the part that gets me is that many of these people have children...who will breathe that air. But I suppose it's hard to think like a full blown sociopath
Eleanor Goldfield

Solar and wind energy can't be regulated too because it's always present and we breathe and feel it

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:25 AM

And it would be incredibly cheap
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:25 AM

Yes, that's why corps don't want solar and wind - it takes energy out of their hands.
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:25 AM

goodbye overpriced electric bills
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:26 AM

★ Spotlighted from Reginald Schluffenstein

I say, right before we go to the Next War... we decide at the last second to spend ALL THAT MONEY that went unquestioned to putting solar panels on everyone's house.

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:26 AM

★ Spotlighted from Omar Hashemyan

That's the thing though, get rid of the corps that are polluting the air somehow

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:26 AM

Through ALEC and Koch Bros - they are currently putting forward PR language claiming that people using solar panels are not paying their fair share and are "free loaders" in the community.
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 12:26 AM

as with many other issues Omar, you're right. it all sources back to that
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:26 AM

It leaked that ALEC's big push this year is to combat sustainable energy.
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 12:27 AM
