Deepak Chopra · 6:00 PM

Hi Rudy. So happy to be here to discuss SUPER BRAIN and take questions from readers.
Rudy Tanzi

Rudy Tanzi · 6:00 PM

Likewise! Our brains are so incredibly powerful. SUPER BRAIN teaches you how to unleash its potential to achieve an optimal state of being – physically, emotionally, spiritually.
Deepak Chopra

Deepak Chopra · 6:00 PM

Exactly. So shall we get started and share some of these so-called secrets? https://www.amazon.com/Super-Brain-Unleashing-Explosive-Well-Being/dp/0307956830
Rudy Tanzi

Rudy Tanzi · 6:01 PM

Yes, let's take some questions.

If one feels rather overwhelmed, submerged, in a difficult reality, is meditation sufficient to help align that individual to higher consciousness?

Rudy Tanzi

Rudy Tanzi · 6:02 PM

On the Super Brain PBS show, we talk about the STOP acronym; Stop, Take 3 deep breaths and smile, Observe how you feel and Proceed with awareness and kindness.

This is a question for Rudy: have you found that the methods in your book help slow the onset of Alzheimers?

Rudy Tanzi

Rudy Tanzi · 6:08 PM

In Super Brain Deepak and I write extensively on the best ways we currently know to reduce risk for Alzheimer's. Being mindful of thoughts and feelings will also induce new synaptic activity, which strenghtens the brain. Exercise and sleep too

Why is is that science and spirituality are so often seen as conflicting? This strikes me as a false "either-or" situation. I'm glad to see them co-exist in this book.

Rudy Tanzi

Rudy Tanzi · 6:10 PM

Thank you Jennifer. New science is often born out insights of intuition fed by spirituality.
Deepak Chopra

Deepak Chopra · 6:10 PM

Rudy and I also developed the Dream Weaver APP that puts people in a meditative state and frequently also in the dream and sleep state. http://deepakchopradreamweaver.com/pages/the-app

Deepak Chopra · 6:11 PM

Right now he and I are speaking at a conference called "Science and Non-Duality" where scientists, philosophers, and spiritual people are gathered to discuss this very topic.
Deepak Chopra

Deepak Chopra · 6:12 PM

Empathy creates balance in the Limbic brian and enhances homeostasis which is self-repair.
Rudy Tanzi

Rudy Tanzi · 6:13 PM

Empathy also creates linkage between the emotional and intellectual centers of the brain. In Super Brain we discuss this as a gateway to intuition.

Those who have Alzheimer's are often afraid as they become anxious when they are aware of the loss of what they used to understand. How can we help calm them?

Rudy Tanzi

Rudy Tanzi · 6:14 PM

I can recommend the book "Learning to Speak Alzheimer's" by Koenig. The key is to not challenge with too many questions and just love them like you normally would.
Deepak Chopra

Deepak Chopra · 6:15 PM

At The Chopra Center we recommend massage and music therapy also.
Rudy Tanzi

Rudy Tanzi · 6:15 PM

Especially music from the time when they were teenagers--this awakens long time memories.

Can you introduce someone to these concepts who may not be very comfortable with spirituality? If so, how would you do that?

Rudy Tanzi

I just wanted to start with saying that this book had a super impact on my life. Especially around the areas of anxiety and depression. Besides meditation and deep breathing, what other ways are there to find calmness when in overwhelm?

Deepak Chopra

Deepak Chopra · 6:16 PM

Carla - The best definition of spirituality is self-awareness. In my opinion no one objects to that term
Rudy Tanzi

Rudy Tanzi · 6:17 PM

Thanks for your kind words about Super Brain. Exercise, good sleep, social engagement with those you enjoy also help. But, mostly remember to observe your thoughts and feelings, learn and detach.

Are all brains hardwired for Enlightenment or through consciousness we have to self-hardwire our brians to affect us and the percived conscious Universe?

Deepak Chopra

Deepak Chopra · 6:18 PM

Marco - You are on target as usual.
Rudy Tanzi

Rudy Tanzi · 6:19 PM

But. remember the brain is never really hard-wired...changing all the time in response to experiences and how you choose to respond to them.

I've embraced the idea, "I'm OK right now, and there is only right now." It works everytime to help me step back, assess the situation, and proceed calmly and rationally.

Deepak Chopra

Deepak Chopra · 6:22 PM

Melissa - Thank you for your comment. Present moment awareness always allows you to experience the fact that most of our struggles come from either remembering the past or imagining the future.
Rudy Tanzi

Rudy Tanzi · 6:22 PM

Melissa, the key is no regrets about the past and no anxiety about the future. Live in the present while learning from past and planning for future.

How does a placid, gentle and peaceful individual (who repeatedly finds themselves in a situation where they are being bullied or picked upon) rise above the situation when peaceful, considered responses have only a temp effect on the aggressor?

Deepak Chopra

Deepak Chopra · 6:24 PM

Dawn - First of all learn to communicate non-violently even with the aggressor. It means firmly request them to change their behavior. Then get a group of people to support you that such behavior is not acceptable in that group.

what is the future of the science among spiritual healing??

Deepak Chopra

Deepak Chopra · 6:25 PM

Spiritual healing is nothing other than returning to your baseline state of pure awareness. Pure awareness restores homeostasis which is self repair.
Rudy Tanzi

Rudy Tanzi · 6:26 PM

Much of spiritual healing is based on induced self-healing. We need to learn who to do this on our own. Positive perspective and the lessons in Super Brain can help.

the presence thing he talks about is so true...certain people have that "aura" to them where they just appear unflappable...but how to cultivate it? that's the hard part...

Deepak Chopra

Deepak Chopra · 6:33 PM

In manic depressive which is bipolar disease. Pharmaceutical treatment can be of immense benefit. Meditation and self awareness are useful once a person has been stabilized through drug therapy.

Deepak Chopra

Deepak Chopra · 6:34 PM

Rudy, Do we know where memory is stored?
Rudy Tanzi

Rudy Tanzi · 6:35 PM

Deepak, this is the first question you asked me and it's the most important in consciousness research. The answer is no. We know how memories are recorded and recalled in the brain but not how/where they are stored. Outside brain?
Deepak Chopra

Deepak Chopra · 6:35 PM

★ Spotlighted from Marco Pacheco

Are memories stored in the brain?... If not? Are they stored in "non locality"'...? if so, can we access other's people's memories by going to that level of awareness? Do we need their permission to do so?

Rudy Tanzi

Rudy Tanzi · 6:37 PM

★ Spotlighted from Rachel Pietrangelo

What made you two decide to collaborate on a book together? And how did you decide on where to start?

Deepak Chopra

Deepak Chopra · 6:37 PM

Rudy - According to ancient and wisdom traditions memories are stored as potential non-locally in what is referred to as the Akashic field. When we retrieve them they localize as the activity of our neural networks.
Deepak Chopra

Deepak Chopra · 6:38 PM

★ Spotlighted from Eric Goldsmith

i love that comment rudy

Rudy Tanzi

Rudy Tanzi · 6:39 PM

Rachel, the first thing Deepak and I agreed upon regarding the brain, is that we are not our brains. The brain is an organ that serves us by bringing us sensations, images, feelings and thoughts. In Super Brain, we recommend to not identify with them
Rudy Tanzi

Rudy Tanzi · 6:39 PM

but observe them, learn from them and detach.

I thought that Memories are stored in body's cells?

Deepak Chopra

Deepak Chopra · 6:41 PM

Anti depressants can be life saving in someone who has acute Psychosis. However if you are taking them for situational depression then of course the situation has to be addressed and you can gradually ween yourself off. Talk therapy is helpful.
Rudy Tanzi

Rudy Tanzi · 6:41 PM

★ Spotlighted from Blake Ian

Everything is stored everywhere

Deepak Chopra

Deepak Chopra · 6:42 PM

You make a good point. It appears that way, however there is no theory for a cellular basis for memory. The cell in fact may be driven by memory which is being localized.
Rudy Tanzi

Rudy Tanzi · 6:43 PM

Shankar, just as we wonder how the brain can recall the image of your Mother's face, we must wonder how a protein in cell "remembers" where to go..?

Rudy Tanzi

Rudy Tanzi · 6:44 PM

Deepak, I agree that people who are suffering from situational depression need to address the situation. All the drugs in the world will not help you until you face what is really wrong.

Deepak Chopra

Deepak Chopra · 6:44 PM

Following Rachel P's question: is it possible then to reach any other being with empathy and compassion, ie an autistic and troubled friend of mine?

Rudy Tanzi

Rudy Tanzi · 6:45 PM

Of course, there are non-verbal ways of communicating...attention, affection, love, empathy...

Can you all touch upon the sensation of guilt. Is there a way to combat the emotional weight if you're having trouble locating an exact source? For instance, if you're feeling an unreasonable amount of guilt for something very benign...

Deepak Chopra

Deepak Chopra · 6:47 PM

Rachel - When you feel guilt you should ask yourself who is hurting and then forgive yourself no matter what the issue is.
Deepak Chopra

Deepak Chopra · 6:47 PM

Very curious what the two of you feel about sleep issues. Broadly speaking, do we know enough to be able to say with reasonable certainty how to "cure" sleep ills or do you think they relate back to deeper, oft-times unaddressed psychological issues?

Rudy Tanzi

Rudy Tanzi · 6:47 PM

Andrei, sleep disorders can be very serious and often require clinical intervention. Sleep, especially as we get older is critical for brain health.
Rudy Tanzi

Rudy Tanzi · 6:48 PM

Deep slow wave sleep helps consolidates long term memories and reduce Alzheimer's pathology. It is important to try to get 8 hours of sleep per night.
