Sarah Meyers is smack dab in the middle of an awesome journey. She's been colonized by China! More specifically, she is carrying a child for another couple. Tonight, we Tawk with her about the process and about the feelings. We'll check in with her periodically as this epic saga continues.

RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:30 AM

Hey, hiya, hello!
SM

Sarah Meyers · 1:30 AM

hello!
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:30 AM

How's it going?
SM

Sarah Meyers · 1:30 AM

pretty well! We were playing some dr. mario....
SM

Sarah Meyers · 1:30 AM

LOVE IT!!
SM

Sarah Meyers · 1:30 AM

You?
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:30 AM

Which usually means a good day for you. :P
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:31 AM

I'm new house, all of that.great! Enjoying Chattanooga, my
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:31 AM

What happened to my comment???
SM

Sarah Meyers · 1:31 AM

hahaha, it exploded!
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:32 AM

I'm enjoying Chattanooga, my new house, all of that, that's what!
SM

Sarah Meyers · 1:32 AM

yay!
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:32 AM

We miss you guys, though!
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:32 AM

Were totally talking about you this afternoon.
SM

Sarah Meyers · 1:32 AM

aww, we miss you too : ) I'm so glad you're in such a neat town though!
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:33 AM

Us, too!
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:33 AM

But, hey!
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:33 AM

Your uterus!
SM

Sarah Meyers · 1:33 AM

it's been occupied!
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:33 AM

Hahahaha!
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:33 AM

"If you use your uterus more than once..."
SM

Sarah Meyers · 1:34 AM

oh man, that article was so funny. *breastfeeding satire for the win*
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:34 AM

(Reference to an Onion-esque article in HuffPo this afternoon)

SM

Sarah Meyers · 1:34 AM

hahhaaa
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:35 AM

Anyway, yes, you are now a surrogate mom.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:35 AM

And we have so may questions!
SM

Sarah Meyers · 1:35 AM

I am indeed!
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:35 AM

Tell us all about it!
SM

Sarah Meyers · 1:35 AM

fire away, I'm full of answers and such ; )
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:35 AM

(and, CONGRATULATIONS!)
SM

Sarah Meyers · 1:35 AM

thanks!
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:35 AM

Begin at the beginning.
SM

Sarah Meyers · 1:36 AM

well, it started with Aria's birth/labor
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:36 AM

Where did the idea come from and how did it grow from amusing thought to reality?
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:36 AM

Aria is your fist child (almost 5)
SM

Sarah Meyers · 1:36 AM

I had her *almost* 5 years ago. and her pregnancy was really easy, as was the labor and I thought "man, I'm good at this, I should get paid for this!!"
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:36 AM

Ha!
SM

Sarah Meyers · 1:37 AM

and then there was Torin, the 2nd, and his was all easy too, even easier than Aria, so I thought "yeah, i really need to look into getting a job that let's me be pregnant!"
SM

Sarah Meyers · 1:37 AM

so, after I felt my body was healthy enough from after having Torin, I got to researching Surrogacy.
SM

Sarah Meyers · 1:38 AM

I found some forums, started there, and then research agencies in the area, and then signed up with one last december I think.
SM

Sarah Meyers · 1:38 AM

My goal is to be able to stay home with my kids, but also help relieve the financial burden of student loans.
SM

Sarah Meyers · 1:39 AM

And we are now achieving that goal. I can stay home and still have a salary! My loans are paid off now, we're almost done with my hubby's
SM

Sarah Meyers · 1:39 AM

and the best part is that a sweet couple from texas gets a baby out fo the deal!
SM

Sarah Meyers · 1:39 AM

So my family gets to move on with our plans, and they do to!
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:40 AM

That all sounds...pretty incredible! Like, best-case scenario for EVERYONE, including your kids.
SM

Sarah Meyers · 1:40 AM

exactly!
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:40 AM

But...
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:40 AM

Or should I say, "and..."
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:40 AM

I imagine there are lots of CONVERSATIONS that take place.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:41 AM

Was there any resistance with your husband?
SM

Sarah Meyers · 1:41 AM

yeah, I've been telling everyone : )
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:41 AM

Hahaha.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:41 AM

No, I mean heavy conversations that get the details worked out and the decisions made.
SM

Sarah Meyers · 1:41 AM

No, he thought it was a great idea from the beginning. We don't want a third kid *right now at least* and we wanted to be debt free.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:41 AM

★ Spotlighted from Seth Westbrook Toker

what were the objections?

RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:42 AM

I think it's Uteri... :P
SM

Sarah Meyers · 1:42 AM

oh, no objections from hubby, he's all in.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:42 AM

Awesome!
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:42 AM

What about family memebers? Other support group members?
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:42 AM

★ Spotlighted from Seth Westbrook Toker

well, that makes it easy

SM

Sarah Meyers · 1:43 AM

Each "client" gets their own lawyer, so we went through a very lengthy contract and made revisions several times and then everyone signs, so that helped with any concerns that he or I had about legal issues or requirements from us.
SM

Sarah Meyers · 1:43 AM

My MIL was concerned that I'd even want to be pregnant again : ) (her pregnancies were hard)
SM

Sarah Meyers · 1:43 AM

my mom thought it was really cool.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:44 AM

Ah. The thing about the lawyers is an important "process" piece of information.
SM

Sarah Meyers · 1:44 AM

My aunt said "so you're going to sell your body?!?!" to which I said "yes, If it means I get to stay home to raise my kids" and then she had no toher negative comments : )
SM

Sarah Meyers · 1:44 AM

*other
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:44 AM

I am always really impressed by the way you handle these things.
SM

Sarah Meyers · 1:44 AM

thanks : )
SM

Sarah Meyers · 1:44 AM

★ Spotlighted from Seth Westbrook Toker

so how many weeks are you in?

SM

Sarah Meyers · 1:44 AM

I'm almost to ten weeks Seth
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:45 AM

Wooo! 1/4 done!
SM

Sarah Meyers · 1:45 AM

lol, right?
SM

Sarah Meyers · 1:45 AM

★ Spotlighted from Seth Westbrook Toker

and are you seeing the Mid wifes?

RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:45 AM

But it has actually been MUCH longer than the 40 weeks of pregnancy already...
SM

Sarah Meyers · 1:45 AM

no Seth, probably an OB for the whole thing this time.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:46 AM

How do you feel about that?
SM

Sarah Meyers · 1:46 AM

yes, I have been matched with this family since February, but we did the embryo transfer in May.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:46 AM

Can you take us through the process really quick>
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:46 AM

?
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:47 AM

You researched, looked at agencies...
SM

Sarah Meyers · 1:47 AM

I'm a little nervous, given that all my experience is with a midwife, but I feel that I've made the best possible OB decision and we'll just see how it goes once I start going to him for appointments.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:47 AM

What is it like to talk to agencies? How do you apply?
SM

Sarah Meyers · 1:47 AM

sure, yeah, I researched agencies first, found the one that was most recomended and fit with me best. They usually have applications on their web sites.
SM

Sarah Meyers · 1:48 AM

so then we did a skype call after the application, and then a bigger application!
SM

Sarah Meyers · 1:48 AM

Then we had a house visit, and then she interviewed my husband.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:48 AM

The agent?
SM

Sarah Meyers · 1:48 AM

yeah.
SM

Sarah Meyers · 1:48 AM

They want to make sure everyone is on board with the whole process.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:49 AM

Makes sense.
SM

Sarah Meyers · 1:49 AM

Once I signed with her, she started looking for couples who wanted the same things I did, for compatibility.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:49 AM

Because life partner support would be key here...
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:49 AM

And what things did you want?
SM

Sarah Meyers · 1:49 AM

She found two, but one was out of the country, and they kind of fizzled out, but the other couple was really interested in using me as a surrogate.
SM

Sarah Meyers · 1:51 AM

I wanted to make sure that I could use a chiropractor, I would be supported in a drug free labor, that they would agree to medically reduce if there were more than 3 babies ( i have to be able to take care of my own kids, I'm not carrying quads!)
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:51 AM

Whoa!
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:51 AM

Yikes.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:51 AM

Yeah.
SM

Sarah Meyers · 1:51 AM

that they knew that I don't use medications, that I eat really cleanly, etc.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:51 AM

★ Spotlighted from Seth Westbrook Toker

that is interesting, that she tried to fit you with couples, not had a bevy of couples waiting and tried to fit you with those in waiting!

SM

Sarah Meyers · 1:52 AM

I also agreed that if they choose to do an amnio, and they choose to abort it for any reason, I'm ok with that too, b/c it's not my baby. I personally wouldn't do that, but I'm fine with them making that decision. That's a BIG one for matching couple
SM

Sarah Meyers · 1:52 AM

no, she took her time of a few months finding people who matched.
SM

Sarah Meyers · 1:53 AM

I also said that I was willing and excited to carry for a gay couple, if that was an option. My couple ended up being straight though : )
SM

Sarah Meyers · 1:53 AM

that's another big trigger point for people, so these are things that you have to think about and decide on before oyu sign up.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:54 AM

That's interesting, and very pertinent for this moment in our history, that you considered letting other people make their own decisions about their offspring, even if they weren't what you would do.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:54 AM

It's especially poignant in this kind of intimate circumstance.
SM

Sarah Meyers · 1:54 AM

well..... yeah : ) hahahaaa
SM

Sarah Meyers · 1:54 AM

it jsut makes sense to me : )
SM

Sarah Meyers · 1:54 AM

*just
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:54 AM

★ Spotlighted from Seth Westbrook Toker

yea, that is a huge thing!

RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:55 AM

And that speaks to who you are!
SM

Sarah Meyers · 1:55 AM

I just want people who want kids to be able to have kids : )
SM

Sarah Meyers · 1:55 AM

★ Spotlighted from Seth Westbrook Toker

Im not sure if i was carrying a baby, if i would be ok with that test and the consequences.

RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:55 AM

You're totally a "birth nerd" childbirth educator...who is very pro-choice!
SM

Sarah Meyers · 1:55 AM

I get that! and if you had a uterus, you'd include that in your profile : )
SM

Sarah Meyers · 1:55 AM

pro-choice all over the place over here : 0
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:56 AM

Sarah for Supreme Court!
SM

Sarah Meyers · 1:56 AM

hahaa, maybe later. I'm too busy for that right now.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:56 AM

So...there are some very real considerations.
SM

Sarah Meyers · 1:56 AM

yes
SM

Sarah Meyers · 1:57 AM

additionally, if something catastrophic happens, you need to be prepared for that too, and be ready to be done with growing your own family (from your body!). That's another big one.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:58 AM

Yowza.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:58 AM

Yeah.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:58 AM

It's risky.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:58 AM

Emotionally and physically.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:58 AM

That's what frightens me the most, the worst case scenarios.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:58 AM

I think that's what frightens us all!
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:58 AM

Man, pregnancy nightmares!!!!
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:59 AM

(I mean, really, the nightmares you have when you are pregnant when everything goes wrong!)
SM

Sarah Meyers · 1:59 AM

I think you just have to take it in to consideration and decide if it's worth it. I have two kdis already, so if my uterus explodes or something (and I don't die) then, that means I'm done, and I'm cool with that. and If I'm not done, then I get to a
SM

Sarah Meyers · 1:59 AM

dopt.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:59 AM

:)
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:59 AM

That's a very practical assessment.
SM

Sarah Meyers · 1:59 AM

yeah, I'm weird like that.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:59 AM

The other thing is, though, OTHER PEOPLE.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:00 AM

In researching, I've found that surrogacy is an "issue." A very controversial topic. Which was surprising. And kind of disappointing.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:00 AM

I guess you explained earlier what you say to that.
SM

Sarah Meyers · 2:00 AM

that's weird. Everyone I've met has been very supportive : ) what have you been seeing people say?
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:01 AM

Ug. Just, the internets.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:01 AM

They say the same ugly things they say about abortions.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:01 AM

Call women whores.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:01 AM

Say they are selling themselves.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:01 AM

None of which I believe.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:01 AM

But I cannot believe that people say those things.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:01 AM

My partner was very opposed to the idea when I brought up the subject of surrogacy (me acting as a surrogate.)
SM

Sarah Meyers · 2:02 AM

yeah, I'm cool with whores too, so I guess that puts me on the outside of society : ) it's my body and if I want to make money off of it..... well.... I can!
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:02 AM

What were his oppositions, Jillian?
SM

Sarah Meyers · 2:02 AM

I'm just doing it in a *mostly* acceptable way.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:02 AM

ROFL!
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:02 AM

Sarah!
SM

Sarah Meyers · 2:02 AM

: )
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:02 AM

XOXO
SM

Sarah Meyers · 2:02 AM

Jillian, what were his/her issues with you being a surro?
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:03 AM

He was uncomfortable with the idea of someone else's child in my body. He was concerned about the risks as well, unwilling to take them for strangers.
SM

Sarah Meyers · 2:03 AM

That's very reasonable!
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:04 AM

Yeah. I mean, once you're in a couple, you do have to weight those things. I mean, I didn't marry a smoker, so I'd be really peeved if my husband took up smoking...
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:04 AM

I haven't pushed the issue, but the more time that goes by the more I want to do it.
SM

Sarah Meyers · 2:04 AM

It can be risky it's true. It can also be very helpful and fulfilling to a lot of people.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:05 AM

Surrogacy isn't really like smoking, though...it's not a bad habit.
SM

Sarah Meyers · 2:05 AM

so, if it's importantn to you, you jsut need to really talk it out and figure out what each of you is willing to bend on : )
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:05 AM

★ Spotlighted from Seth Westbrook Toker

i guess it could become a bad habit?

SM

Sarah Meyers · 2:05 AM

hahaha, it can be!
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:06 AM

LOL!
SM

Sarah Meyers · 2:06 AM

j/k. there are some "career surrogates" though, so that's cool.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:06 AM

I know a woman who has done it twice, for a total of 3 kiddos.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:06 AM

Which is pretty cool.
SM

Sarah Meyers · 2:07 AM

some surro mom's do it for the same family again, so there can be a sibling. I think that's really cute.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:07 AM

There is plenty of research out there, Jillian. I think with more research and a better understanding of the safeguards used, your husband might come around. :)
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:07 AM

Yeah - Holly did (the lady I was talking about). I think you talked to her some when you were researching.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:08 AM

★ Spotlighted from Seth Westbrook Toker

To be honest, there is something spicy and alluring about my wife being in the state of pregnancy, and i feel the draw to become a father for the second time.

RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:08 AM

★ Spotlighted from Seth Westbrook Toker

Is that a real thing? a "career"? the challenges of putting that stress on a body is immense.

SM

Sarah Meyers · 2:08 AM

was she the one I talked to first? I can't even remember now! I know the first one was the one who gave me the forums that I went to.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:08 AM

Ah, Seth...but when you just get to go home and recuperate, instead of going home and raising a newborn...
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:09 AM

I think Holly was the first lady you talked to.
SM

Sarah Meyers · 2:09 AM

Seth, that's another part of why we're doing it! we both like it when I'm pregnant, we just aren't ready for a third yet.
SM

Sarah Meyers · 2:09 AM

also, yes, you can make a career of it, but oyu do need to put a good gap between each pregnancy to let yourself heal.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:09 AM

★ Spotlighted from Seth Westbrook Toker

(smiles)

RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:10 AM

It seems a lot like being an author...
SM

Sarah Meyers · 2:10 AM

and yeah, getting to be pregnant, but not bringing home a newborn is pretty exciting. I love my kids to the moon and back, but newborns are freakin hard work!
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:10 AM

★ Spotlighted from Seth Westbrook Toker

The comment Rebecca made about recuperating without the child, that is a hard thing, i imagine

SM

Sarah Meyers · 2:10 AM

which part Seth?
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:10 AM

Recuperating WITH the child is hard! :D
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:11 AM

★ Spotlighted from Seth Westbrook Toker

as easy as one would assume that to be, it might be a more "male" perspective, I hope I dont insult when I say this.

RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:11 AM

Do you mean, like, emotionally?
SM

Sarah Meyers · 2:12 AM

ah, yeah, I think that'll be ok.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:12 AM

★ Spotlighted from Seth Westbrook Toker

yes, certainly

SM

Sarah Meyers · 2:12 AM

b/c I'm making sure that I have a barrier of "this isn't mine"
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:12 AM

★ Spotlighted from Seth Westbrook Toker

The separation of child and mother.

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:12 AM

★ Spotlighted from Seth Westbrook Toker

a guy would say

SM

Sarah Meyers · 2:12 AM

lol
SM

Sarah Meyers · 2:12 AM

yes : )
SM

Sarah Meyers · 2:13 AM

I think it would be harder if I was a "traditional surrogate" where they use my eggs. but I'm a "gestational surrogate" so there's nothing of me in this baby, I'm jsut cooking it for them.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:13 AM

How difficult is it to create that barrier?
SM

Sarah Meyers · 2:13 AM

I know I'll be attached like I was to my students, cuz I'm chilling with this kid 24/7, but It's not mine.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:13 AM

Well...I guess that does make it easier...
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:13 AM

★ Spotlighted from Seth Westbrook Toker

do you think this will have a hormonal and biological impact that will encourage distance or more of a mental ease

RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:14 AM

★ Spotlighted from Seth Westbrook Toker

i really gotta ask that one

SM

Sarah Meyers · 2:14 AM

Seth, I don't worry about the separation. I'm pretty good at making barriers like that, so it's easy for me to compartmentalize it.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:14 AM

That's cool that you know yourself that well!
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:14 AM

SO, I think surrogacy really wouldn't be for everyone.
SM

Sarah Meyers · 2:15 AM

can you rephrase that seth?
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:15 AM

It would have to be something that you can handle the terms of.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:15 AM

★ Spotlighted from Seth Westbrook Toker

that tells me you are relying on yourself for the strength and guidance to carry this out

SM

Sarah Meyers · 2:15 AM

and no, it's not for everyone. If you get attached to tings easily, it might be hard to give it up. Some surros maintain a realationship with the family after birth too though,so they can check on "their" baby. That's something you'd have to work out
SM

Sarah Meyers · 2:15 AM

with teh parents.
SM

Sarah Meyers · 2:16 AM

yeah
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:16 AM

★ Spotlighted from Seth Westbrook Toker

right

SM

Sarah Meyers · 2:17 AM

★ Spotlighted from Seth Westbrook Toker

my questioning is more along the lines of nurture/nature. with nature being your own egg and nurture being the mental attachment, no matter what the genesis of the child.

SM

Sarah Meyers · 2:17 AM

yes, that makes sense. It's not mine, but I will be emotionally attached to it b/c of vicinity.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:17 AM

I think he maybe means, do you think the mental separation that you're creating will have some hormonal effect on your body that will make it easier to let go?
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:17 AM

Of course!
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:18 AM

And because of your role.
SM

Sarah Meyers · 2:18 AM

I'm not one to get attached to babies early though, so that's another part of it.
SM

Sarah Meyers · 2:18 AM

That'd be cool if it changed the hormones like that! I'll let you know if i notice a difference!
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:18 AM

★ Spotlighted from Seth Westbrook Toker

yes! that is more the question

RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:19 AM

It's really incredible how well you know yourself!
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:19 AM

And it's amazing that a system exists that lets you choose terms that work for you.
SM

Sarah Meyers · 2:19 AM

haha, i just pay attention i guess : ) It doesn't seem incredible to me!
SM

Sarah Meyers · 2:20 AM

yeah, it's pretty cool. I wanted to do it with an agency b/c I knew she'd be more organized and could help me find a couple that fit with us really well.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:21 AM

I know of people who have carried surrogate children for freinds or family members, but couldn't imagine any other scenario. I think the ability to make those kinds of distinctions are important to the situation.
SM

Sarah Meyers · 2:21 AM

yes.
SM

Sarah Meyers · 2:21 AM

I didn't want it to be anyone I knew : )
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:21 AM

You seem to have had a very pleasant experience with the biological parents so far. Can you tell us a little about that?
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:22 AM

★ Spotlighted from Seth Westbrook Toker

i would think that a social distance would improve the chances of it working out.

SM

Sarah Meyers · 2:22 AM

yes, Seth I agree.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:22 AM

That totally makes sense to me!
SM

Sarah Meyers · 2:22 AM

Yeah, with the parents, we've chatted on Skype a few times, met in person once of twice, and then spent some hours together after the embryo transfer.
SM

Sarah Meyers · 2:23 AM

They're really nice : ) The dad is white, the mom is Chinese american (thus all the Chinese invasion jokes I've been making)
SM

Sarah Meyers · 2:23 AM

The mom has known she's totally infertile since she was a teen.
SM

Sarah Meyers · 2:24 AM

at first, she was going to use her sister, but that didn't work out, so they came looking at agencies.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:24 AM

That's heartbreaking.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:24 AM

It's...miraculous that they can use your uterus!
SM

Sarah Meyers · 2:25 AM

I honestly can't remember what she said it was, but i think that there's something very wrong with her uterus and she's had lots of surgeries on it.
SM

Sarah Meyers · 2:25 AM

than then her sister had a new baby and then had to move out of state for a job, so that killed that idea.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:25 AM

★ Spotlighted from Seth Westbrook Toker

im so glad they found you. you are the Baby Forge. +1

SM

Sarah Meyers · 2:25 AM

hahaha, yes! can I get a plus three, since this is my third time?
SM

Sarah Meyers · 2:25 AM

I know becky, it's so cool!

RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:26 AM

RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:26 AM

Yes, explain that!
SM

Sarah Meyers · 2:26 AM

lol, that's me! don't forget the barbarian part!

SM

Sarah Meyers · 2:27 AM

SM

Sarah Meyers · 2:27 AM

yeah, they got eggs from an egg donor (who is Chinese) and then fertilized them with the Dad's sperm. then they let the eggs grow a little bit. if they aren't doing well synthetically, they put them into your body on day 3, if they are doing well in
SM

Sarah Meyers · 2:28 AM

the lab, they let them keep growing till day 5 and pop them in.
SM

Sarah Meyers · 2:29 AM

yes seth, I do wear that shirt, my homeschool co-op thought it was hilarious.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:29 AM

★ Spotlighted from Seth Westbrook Toker

Hey! do you guys ever wear those shirts?

SM

Sarah Meyers · 2:29 AM

so anyway, my embryo was a day 5 (wooo!) and it attached and started growing!
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:29 AM

Bam, bam, bam! You are the Baby Forge!

the embryo is strong in this one...........

SM

Sarah Meyers · 2:29 AM

I alwasy feel the pregnancy 3days after the implantation, so I was pretty sure it worked, but we had to wait a bit longer for the pee-stick to prove it.
SM

Sarah Meyers · 2:30 AM

and then a blood test
SM

Sarah Meyers · 2:30 AM

and then another blood test!
SM

Sarah Meyers · 2:30 AM

and then an ultrasound!
SM

Sarah Meyers · 2:30 AM

but it's still there and still gworing!
SM

Sarah Meyers · 2:30 AM

*growing
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:31 AM

Yay!
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:31 AM

And so, now, it's just pregnacy as usual?
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:31 AM

Like, OB visits every month, then every 2 weeks, then every week?
SM

Sarah Meyers · 2:32 AM

so far! I get "released" from the fertility clinic at some point... I'm still on synthetic progesterone and estrogen.
SM

Sarah Meyers · 2:32 AM

they've done research that those help maintain a pregnancy.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:32 AM

How has that been?
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:32 AM

Any side-effects?
SM

Sarah Meyers · 2:32 AM

so I haven't started at the OB yet, still under clinic watch.
SM

Sarah Meyers · 2:33 AM

um, not really, no. I was a little more angry at first, but that went away after a day or two (it's back now, but that's the pregnancy, not the meds, lol)
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:33 AM

Hahaha!
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:33 AM

Yes.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:33 AM

may I ask if they reccomended that you withhold from hetro sexual intercourse?

SM

Sarah Meyers · 2:33 AM

and teh progesterone is a weirdly textured cream that I have to use vaginally, so I'm not a big fan of that, but it's better than intramuscular shots!
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:33 AM

Word.
SM

Sarah Meyers · 2:33 AM

so I'll take the cream and try not to complain too much!
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:34 AM

Agreed.
SM

Sarah Meyers · 2:34 AM

yes, seth, from a bit before the transfer, until positive test.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:34 AM

The concept of topical progesterone is amusing to me...
SM

Sarah Meyers · 2:34 AM

really they said the end of bed rest, we were goo to go, but other people recomended to wait for positive test, so we did that. so, it was like... and week and a half.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:35 AM

That's much less time than I would have guessed!
SM

Sarah Meyers · 2:35 AM

yeah, i think my body can flush the meds pretty well once I'm done, since I'm pretty healthy anyway.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:35 AM

Human bodies are...so cool!
SM

Sarah Meyers · 2:35 AM

yeah they are!
SM

Sarah Meyers · 2:36 AM

oh man! bed rest was great! I got to chill in a hotel for 3 days and have people bring yummy food to me!
SM

Sarah Meyers · 2:36 AM

that was a nice vacation!

RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:37 AM

What do you mean, Seth?
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:37 AM

Like, how would that affect any thing?
SM

Sarah Meyers · 2:37 AM

semen is a prostiglandin (spelling?) and so it softens your cervix
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:37 AM

Oh. Yeah, that.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:37 AM

★ Spotlighted from Seth Westbrook Toker

that is true

SM

so you do need to be careful if you're prone to miscarriage.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:37 AM

Good point.
SM

Sarah Meyers · 2:37 AM

it also has been proven to reduce depression, which is hilarious to us, so there's taht : )
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:38 AM

But if you're prone to miscarriage, can you even be recommended for surrogacy?
SM

Sarah Meyers · 2:38 AM

but it doesn't signal "get out of my wife, you don't belong here!" to the baby : )
RT

RT

How sweet!
SM

Sarah Meyers · 2:44 AM

yeah, i don't think i could function if i was doing that. I'm already to the point where I'm seeing red (literally) if the food it late...... i think people would die if I was nursing someone too. I don't do well with HANGRY!!!
RT

SM

Sarah Meyers · 2:45 AM

Thanks, I am! I'm really pleased with how this is turing our for everyone!
SM

Sarah Meyers · 2:45 AM

I'm so glad that it worked on the first try, for the mom/dad! It kills me to see the parents have to go through multiple transfers.
SM

Sarah Meyers · 2:45 AM

So I'm really happy that my couple didn't have to go through that disappointment, b/c it doesn't always work on the first try.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:46 AM

That's got to be tough for everyone. The surrogate and her family, the parents...
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:46 AM

It's pretty freaking great that everything went well.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:46 AM

But you had a good feeling about this all along. I think that means something.
SM

Sarah Meyers · 2:46 AM

yeah, b/c then you have to do the whole transfer/bed rest thing again and the parents get so down-hearted. it's just hard.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:47 AM

Yeah. :/
SM

Sarah Meyers · 2:47 AM

yeah, I was pretty positive that it was going to work on the first try, b/c that's how my own babies did : ) so I felt that it should automatically apply here : )
SM

Sarah Meyers · 2:47 AM

also, they used a young egg donor, so that helps with the chances too. instead of using an older/sicker mom's eggs I mean.
SM

Sarah Meyers · 2:47 AM

or frozen eggs.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:49 AM

That's interesting.
SM

Sarah Meyers · 2:49 AM

I'll tell you the hardest thing though,
SM

Sarah Meyers · 2:49 AM

the hardest thing is how SO MANY PEOPLE keep telling me how great this is an how selfless I am to be doing this for them.
SM

Sarah Meyers · 2:50 AM

but I just don't feel that way, b/c it's so mutually beneficial!
SM

Sarah Meyers · 2:50 AM

SM

Sarah Meyers · 2:50 AM

That was unexpected to me.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 2:51 AM

It is pretty amazing. And it's okay to be paid for it at the same time. :)
