It's tax day! Join activists Eleanor Goldfield and Lee Camp as they discuss taxation; how much and where our taxes go - should we pay more? less? close loopholes? Join the discussion!

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 10:59 PM

Hey fighters! What the fuck is up?? Happy Tax Day! ...Is that a thing? Can anyone have a happy tax day?
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 10:59 PM

Hey everyone! Happy tax day! Welcome to our weekly tawk. And hello to my lovely co-host Lee
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 10:59 PM

Thanks for setting the tone, Lisa.
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 10:59 PM

If you have enough to drink Lee, I think so
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 10:59 PM

Hey El!
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:00 PM

First things first - PLEASE tell people you're here. Just include the link to this page and tell them to join us!
Lee Camp

Fuck this shit! Hahahaha...

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:00 PM

I don't have enough to drink
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:01 PM

So - taxes...I'm not gonna lie. I am actually a fan of the idea of taxation
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:01 PM

But, as the title suggests, not without representation
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:01 PM

So my comment today was - If we're supposed to have no taxation without representation as a rule, then are we really represented?
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:01 PM

If you're a big corporation then yes, Lee, you are
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:01 PM

We are ruled by plutocrats - rule by the wealthy. Over 50% of Congress is millionaires now.
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:02 PM

Are they "representative" of us?
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:02 PM

For example - in 2010, GE reported profits of $14.2 billion, of which $5.1 bn came from US operations.
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:02 PM

So all I have to do is be a big corporation?
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:02 PM

They paid $0 in taxes
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:02 PM

Not only that, they actually COLLECTED tax benefits of $3.2 billion
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:02 PM

And most corporations like ExxonMobil pay most of their taxes overseas because it's cheaper.
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:02 PM

even if they get most of their profits in the US
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:03 PM

So yeah, become a big corporation and you'll always have a happy tax day
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:03 PM

Ha - wow, Lisa. I actually did not know that
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:03 PM

Lisa - The NFL is also the largest socialist organiztion in the US - I think I hear that.
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:03 PM

But if churches are off the hook, it makes sense that the "other" sunday watering hole would be too
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:03 PM

★ Spotlighted from Lisa Del Rey

Did you also know that the NFL is a non profit organization which is how they avoid paying taxes.

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:04 PM

★ Spotlighted from Michael Crump

Washington D.C. is not truly represented. Vote for the 51st state?

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:04 PM

Eleanor, I'm a fan of taxes as well - as long as we fight to make them go to the right things and not just war contractors
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:04 PM

Absolutely.
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:04 PM

★ Spotlighted from Michael Crump

Instead of income tax or corporate tax; how about responsibility tax? The higher your responsibility, the higher the tax?

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:04 PM

Kelly - I haven't seen Ventura talk about it, but I think it's a terrible idea.
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:04 PM

Tax reform gets thrown around as an idea but never actualized.
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:05 PM

Rich people don't spend all that much money - so poor people end up footing the bill with a national sales tax.
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:05 PM

★ Spotlighted from kelly mackin

Has anyone mentioned jesse venturas national sales tax idea?

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:05 PM

★ Spotlighted from James Howard

Tax code seems to need complete overhauling... like so many things....

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:05 PM

For example, the Koch Bros have $50 billion, how much do they spend a year? A few hundred million? Nothing compared to what they take in.
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:05 PM

★ Spotlighted from kelly mackin

oh ya churchs should pay tax, and follow the same laws as everyone else.

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:06 PM

So should the tax code be written on what people spend?
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:06 PM

★ Spotlighted from Lisa Del Rey

The economy needs a complete overhaul but that's besides the point...or is it?

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:06 PM

Or on what they take in or both?
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:06 PM

Also, the issue with a lot of corporations is of course that they hide their money away overseas
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:07 PM

Before tax havens and crazy huge corporations with accountants who come up with all kinds of schemes - our tax system was much closer to fair.
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:07 PM

Making it so that they are based in the US but don't pay for the infrastructure they take advantage of
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:07 PM

I like that Michael.
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:07 PM

haha - I like that too, but then people like Hillary Clinton would also be exempt
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:07 PM

And she makes a lot more than pretty much every man I know
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:08 PM

They exploit everything about the US but then have no allegiance to actually pay to keep the society strong. That's the corporate way!
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:08 PM

★ Spotlighted from Michael Crump

I think women should be tax-exempt. At least, until the Equal Pay Amendment is ratified or Equal Pay; Equal Work is passed. Whichever comes first.

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:08 PM

And when they invest the money, they have no risk in whether it turns out well for them or not. They'll get bailed out regardless
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:08 PM

@Steven - very true. Loopholes are for sale to the highest bidder
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:09 PM

Steven - that's true but if we cut off tax havens, they would be taxed a great deal more. And they wouldn't just avoid the US, there's too many people and too many resources to just leave town.
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:09 PM

★ Spotlighted from kelly mackin

thing is they ONLY invest money, WE do ALL the work.

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:09 PM

★ Spotlighted from Steven Geary

This whole Tax situation is a shell game. If you make a corporation pay taxes in one place, they avoid that place. This goes for everywhere in the world.

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:09 PM

★ Spotlighted from Lisa Del Rey

We work so they filthy rich can play. That's always a comforting thought. Yeah, let's keep paying our taxes people.

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:09 PM

★ Spotlighted from Brandie Carignan

what do you guys think of guarunteed basic income? the swiss are on board...and there was a study on it done in canada...and the results were positive.

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:09 PM

@Brandie - there's a similar system in Scandinavian countries as well. However, I think we're a lot further away from that than we are to closing loopholes
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:10 PM

The key to a lot of this is to make things as complicated as possible. That way, you have to have million-dollar accountants to get the loopholes and they don't have to worry about "average people" catching on.
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:10 PM

@Jordan - as a vegetarian, can i score some kale instead?
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:10 PM

I'll trade you a kale for a chicken!
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:11 PM

★ Spotlighted from Jordan Birnbaum

I'll trade you a goat for a chicken.

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:11 PM

Man, you guys only waited until 11 minutes in to go straight to economy-by-live-chickens???
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:11 PM

Sheesh, you people are nuts.
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:12 PM

★ Spotlighted from Lisa Del Rey

In fact, they have to keep the loopholes in order to keep the corporations in state because if not, they would all based their headquarters outside the US and nobody would have to worry about working cause there will be no jobs. Hey, that's a thought

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:13 PM

★ Spotlighted from phil chipper

taxation is theft with the threat of violence

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:13 PM

@Lisa - they already base much of their operations outside the country.
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:14 PM

★ Spotlighted from Steven Geary

upon layer of corporate bullshit.

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:14 PM

If we closed loopholes and tightened regulations - or just brought regulations back in general - some corporations may move entirely, but compared to the ones that would stay and ones that would grow, our economy would be in a helluva lot better shap

Alright I'll bring the poop

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:16 PM

would you still pay taxes in a resource based economy?
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:16 PM

By being in the society, don't we have an obligation to pay to keep it going? And then fight to make it go to the things we want it to?
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:16 PM

★ Spotlighted from Brandie Carignan

i have a wish that everyone of the planet would just say NO! Whatchya gonna do with your abstract money when we all say no? like people on here are saying food..ya food is real tangible wealth...

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:17 PM

@Lee - I'm of the mind that you have to work in the system to change it
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:17 PM

kind of like using a phone as opposed to going robinson crusoe
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:17 PM

In a resource based economy, I think your taxes would be helping to make the society work.
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:18 PM

We could easily straighten this mess out if we could only get everyone together, sigh....

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:18 PM

@Brandie - I think it goes back to what Lee and I are saying about using the system to change the system
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:18 PM

★ Spotlighted from Brandie Carignan

its really complicated because we need infrstructure..we need roads and hospitals...and garbage removal..and stuff like that....so I don't know how that would work on a large scale.

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:18 PM

★ Spotlighted from Hughie Devore

We simply need to do away with interest.

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:18 PM

Phil - If we only get what we each individually ask for, there would be nothing - or at least no connected society.
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:19 PM

★ Spotlighted from Lisa Del Rey

We are all thinking it but we ain't doing shit about it.

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:19 PM

For example, working on legislation like here in CA, SB1272 to overturn Citizens United and call for a 28th amendment. Change can be pushed from within

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:21 PM

@kelly - very true. income inequality is a part of the broken tax code
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:21 PM

★ Spotlighted from kelly mackin

the inequality is very high.

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:21 PM

You look at the amount of our tax dollars that go to war and death compared to the amount that go to education and health - it's mind boggling!
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:21 PM

★ Spotlighted from Kathy Grinslade

Our nation is run at this time by corporate legislation brought to us by our republican and democratic parties. We can change this with a vote. We have to try to give the progressives a chance here.

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:21 PM

@Jordan - exactly - that's the true idea behind capitalism: competition. What we have is not capitalism. As Dylan Ratigan says, we have corporate communism
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:22 PM

★ Spotlighted from Jordan Birnbaum

plus, competition is supposed to be about spurring people to produce their best, not about finding ways to harm the competition.

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:22 PM

godfuck. i like that phil, may steal that one

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:23 PM

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:23 PM

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:24 PM

Is it our human tendency to end up funding mostly war or is that simply a symptom of the fucked system we're in right now?
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:25 PM

@Hughie - very true. Our tawks come back to this point a lot. Corporations are not people and money is not free speech
Lee Camp

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:25 PM

★ Spotlighted from Hughie Devore

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:25 PM

Every issue, including tax codes can be traced back to the corporate stranglehold on our country.
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:25 PM

@Lee - I'd like to say the latter
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:25 PM

Is Sweden your proof?
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:25 PM

That wasn't sarcastic.

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:26 PM

We recently celebrated our 200th year without any armed conflicts
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:26 PM

Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:27 PM

Reports on Hillary's HUGE involvement with weapons contractor Boeing came out today - BTW
Eleanor Goldfield

I've often thought that community service should be used instead of jail time for minor offenses. Get people out in the open air, digging ditches, building roads, bridges
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:32 PM

David - Don't always accept "their" view of reality. Think outside the box.
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:33 PM

Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:34 PM

The tax code is horrifically lopsided

Which brings up the point of getting actual representatives of the 99% elected to office
Lee Camp

El - Do you think the failure to do that has been a failure to do the "boring" work of organizing? Or is it something else?
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:40 PM

Eleanor, how can we find the people to run for office with the character we need? We have to look at their history and hope...like we did with Obama.

Neither took corporate money.
Lee Camp

Lee Camp · 11:44 PM

No Mike, you're just scary.
Eleanor Goldfield

Eleanor Goldfield · 11:45 PM

@Kathy - we have to work to find people who will work for us. That's of course, easier said than done but looking at history is one way. But the present is even better.
