Totally agree JB - Saving Private Ryan's opening scene, IMO, is such a great way to wake people up to the horrible effects of war and violence. there is NO glorification of it

The end scene of Private Ryan is important because it shows the emotional impact of war and death. When the guy is wondering if he lived a life worthy of the man that sacrificed himself. That scene stuck in my head way more than the opener.

Well slaughtering animals for food is a necessity, and a part of life. Senseless violence from sadists, like Joffrey from Game of Thrones is what makes me cringe.

Conflict is interesting. Rising against the odds is interesting. You can have these things without violence, but watching someone get kicked in the head is awwwwesome.

I think rounded female characters, ones that seem like real people, are more important than 'strong' ones. You don't have to kick ass and take names to seem strong though. You can be strong with debating, or other things.

That's why I think it's very important for people to take a decent martial arts class. Where they can learn to defend themselves, gain confidence and learn to only use violence as a last resort.

the problem I think is we tend to promote too much violence and not enough love, empathy, and compassion (which is the woman's side of the story in a way... which like you say the media ignores)

There's very little diversity in sci fi and fantasy especially. I've heard stories of TV Execs saying that characters can't be black, because "black people don't like fantasy." Dragons are more realistic than black people apparently.

Generally I'd say that violence is used for shock value. But there are plenty of good examples too. Game of Thrones is great at showing consequences.

I agree with Ross a deep, heavy storyline that shows consequences and the struggle between good and bad it may be necessary to tell the story, but senseless violence isn't needed at all and creates more accidents and injuries than we should have,
