Fight. Fighty-fight. Shoot. Kill. Hit. Smash. Violence pervades our media and thereby our lives and culture. But what does that mean for us? Is media just reflecting life, or is it irresponsibly portraying out-of-proportion violence for the sake of ratings? Does watching violence affect the psyche? Do we even know? Come on in and let's Tawk it out! Check your guns at the door, please.

Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 12:07 AM

that is interesting
RT

RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 12:08 AM

There is an incredible amount of gun violence in the media.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 12:08 AM

so, the opening scene of Saving Private Ryan might have a different effect than Grand Theft Auto

RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 12:09 AM

Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 12:09 AM

Jordan Birnbaum · 12:11 AM

So, does the violence we process from media fill a need we have for violence/? or does it grow from there?
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 12:11 AM

Totally agree JB - Saving Private Ryan's opening scene, IMO, is such a great way to wake people up to the horrible effects of war and violence. there is NO glorification of it

Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 12:12 AM

The end scene of Private Ryan is important because it shows the emotional impact of war and death. When the guy is wondering if he lived a life worthy of the man that sacrificed himself. That scene stuck in my head way more than the opener.

Jordan Birnbaum · 12:13 AM

Okay,
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 12:26 AM

so let's look at the portrayal of birth in the media:
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 12:27 AM

what do we know about birth from TV?
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 12:27 AM

women scream profanities
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 12:27 AM

We know that it is so painful that women just can't stand it
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 12:27 AM

We know that babies come from hospitals
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 12:27 AM

or occasionally from taxi cab backseats
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 12:27 AM

and we have to rush to the hospital
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 12:27 AM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

it freekin hurts

RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 12:27 AM

Yes, all of those things.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 12:27 AM

and you have to breathe and push
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 12:28 AM

and men should give constant back rubs and foot massages
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 12:28 AM

But let's look at what that's REALLY communicating to us:
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 12:28 AM

★ Spotlighted from Rachel McDonnell

haha yes Jordan breathing is important ;)

RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 12:28 AM

First, it's not giving a clear picture of birth because it only portrays (inaccurately) TRANSITION, which is the most violent and painful part of birth.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 12:29 AM

It shows us that women can't handle it without medical intervention
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 12:29 AM

thats true
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 12:29 AM

It shows that men are useless in this scenairo - have no role or job except the foot massage bit
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 12:29 AM

It shows us that birth is something to AVOID
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 12:29 AM

which we secretly like, by the way
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 12:30 AM

and that you need a doctor to come in ans save the day and be the hero of the story.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 12:30 AM

having no real role, I mean...
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 12:31 AM

so the media portrayal of birth sends very misleading and negative messages that color our perception. I acept that as true and as a bad thing.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 12:31 AM

This incomplete, flawed picture of birth is what we get out of our exposure to it in modern media. We don't see joy. We don't see ecstatic birth. We don't see empowered, calm women - with partners who can help them in real and necessary ways.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 12:31 AM

These ideas about birth pervade society. they have set up our cultural paradigm.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 12:32 AM

how would things be different if birth was portrayed differently?
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 12:32 AM

they help us accept the epidural as a blessing instead of as a mideval and mostly ineffective and incredibly risky and FUCKING UNNECESSARY.

What about the smile on the mother, while she's holding the baby in her arms? Or is that bad because it only shows happiness once the birth is over?

RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 12:33 AM

If birth were portrayed diferently, women wouldn't be scared of it.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 12:33 AM

And normal birth would be normalized, instead of emergency birth being normalized - and accepted as the norm.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 12:33 AM

Now, what that says to me
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 12:33 AM

is that the media is incredibly powerful
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 12:33 AM

and INSIDIOUS
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 12:34 AM

Things, like the Boston Bomber looking hot the cover of Rolling Stones is disgusting, because it makes these sickos look famous and adored. Experts say to not show the perpetrators in the media, because it makes others want to do it.
