Psychology has come a long way since its establishment as a legitimate field of science a century and a half ago. There have been plenty of breakthroughs, blunders, and controversy. The new psychology that is emerging, though, is breaking through information bias and social mores to find solutions to some of our worst human hangups. Indeed, psychology may be the last best hope we have for a peaceful way forward.

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 12:30 AM

Hey, Rachel! How are you?
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:30 AM

Hello everyone! Hi Rebecca! :) I am good and yourself?
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 12:30 AM

Hello friends and neighbors! How's everyone tonight?
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 12:30 AM

I'm doing dandy, thanks. :)
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:30 AM

Welcome audience, don't be shy, feel free to speak up ;)
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 12:31 AM

How's summer treating Minnesotans?
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:31 AM

So I have been searching the last 30 mins for ONE article in my many stacks of articles, trying to find it for this tawk

Peachy Keen!

RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:31 AM

I was unsuccessful lol it was on the history of the field, I was trying to remember who we dubbed the Father of Industrial Psychology I can hear my professor in my head lol
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:32 AM

good it has been hot the past few days which I love, any excuse to be in the water
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 12:32 AM

Oh, man! Stuff like that bugs me! Don't worry, though - it'll come to you.
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:33 AM

I know it bugs me too, not a huge detail but of course the articles on the history you are usually like I'll never need to recite that off the top of my head - oops :p haha
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 12:33 AM

Have you guys been getting an unprecedented amount of rain? We have rain. All the rain. And the SAD to prove it! :P
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:33 AM

feel free to invite people to the tawk on FB and twitter too! :)
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 12:33 AM

Hugo Munsterberg?

RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:33 AM

oh man the whole month of June felt like pure rain, it wasn't fun, my garden is finally recovering
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:33 AM

Who's that Julie? lol
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 12:34 AM

I think she just made letters...
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 12:34 AM

The Father or I/O??

RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:34 AM

oh yeah! you are right! thanks
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:34 AM

I was confused haha
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:34 AM

Yes! how could I forget a name like that! haha
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 12:34 AM

No way!
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 12:34 AM

His name was Munsterberg????
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 12:35 AM

I thought Julie was being funny Peanut Gallery!
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 12:35 AM

Little did I know she was saving the day!
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 12:35 AM

★ Spotlighted from Julie Myers

Did not want you to feel crazy :-)

RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:35 AM

it says he was one of the pioneers I can't remember for sure if he was the father
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:35 AM

I thought the father of it was an American
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:35 AM

but I could be wrong
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 12:36 AM

Still - impressive!
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:36 AM

damn it I need that article!
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 12:36 AM

LOL
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:36 AM

haha
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:36 AM

yes looks like he did plenty of great work in Psychology
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:36 AM

Very kind of you Julie :)
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 12:36 AM

Okay, so, I asked Rachel here tonight because I've become impressed/obsessed with the field of psych lately.
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:36 AM

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hugo_M%C3%BCnsterberg
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 12:37 AM

I'm taking a Coursera course on Social Psych. And man! I had no idea how progressive psychology has become!
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:37 AM

yay! I love when people get turned on to psychology, it is such a fascinating field! :)
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:37 AM

Cattell sounds right in my head
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:37 AM

★ Spotlighted from Julie Myers

James McKeen Cattell is his American counter-part

RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 12:37 AM

I always read/hear about drear studies like the Prison Experiment, how long it took the APA to declassify homosexuality as a disorder, etc.
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:38 AM

go figure we'd push the American version haha ;)
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:38 AM

Yes! Are you liking Social Psych?
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 12:38 AM

And, since I'm Special Ed, the history of my field intersects with the history of your field.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 12:38 AM

Yes, I'm loving it!
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:39 AM

There are so many different SUB components of psychology you have social, experimental, applied, psychiatric, I/O (my field), sleep psych, neurology and psych, the study of cognition, memory
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 12:39 AM

And the present of my field intersects the present of your field - we teach kids with behavior disorders, emotional disturbances, etc.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 12:39 AM

Yeah.
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:39 AM

but at the core all of these some 80 sub components of the overall field of psych is the underlining objective of understanding and predicting human behavior
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 12:40 AM

Psychology is HUGE!
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 12:40 AM

It's really a burgeoning science!
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:40 AM

yeah if you want to know how big the field of psychology is check out the APA's website they list something 80 sub specialties http://www.apa.org/
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:40 AM

yes and thank you for using the word science!
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:41 AM

there is nothing we psychologists dislike more than to be called a psuedoscience or worse liberal arts!
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 12:41 AM

:)
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 12:41 AM

I do have a BHRS certification.
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:41 AM

which almost happened to my program a few years back due to the dean's lack of knowledge that psychology is actually a science
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 12:41 AM

No, no argument here. I've got the respect.
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:41 AM

awesome! :0
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:41 AM

:)
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:42 AM

so yeah my field is industrial-organizational psychology
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 12:42 AM

Yes!
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:43 AM

which is a sort of strange pairing, industrial psychology in itself looks at problems from a bottom up perspective and looks from an individual worker/person's perspective and how what makes them, how that interacts with their environment and
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:43 AM

causes their behavior
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:43 AM

organizational psychology is more of a top down approach looking at big groups of people, seeing if you can categorize these groups to make them more manageable
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 12:43 AM

Interesting.
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:43 AM

the the pure industrial psychologist is more interested in the individual person
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:44 AM

but our fields got smooshed together
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 12:44 AM

It seems like you's want a little bit of both?
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 12:44 AM

Whole picture + pieces?
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:44 AM

and now we deal with it both from an individual perspective and a more business - organization perspective simultaneously
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 12:44 AM

Aha!
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:45 AM

yes exactly and when you know how to do it well you can help the business profit while helping increase worker wellbeing
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:45 AM

both mentally and physically
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 12:45 AM

Which seems ideal for everyone...\
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:45 AM

I took a health and stress elective last year and it is ridiculous how much money companies lose by trying to cut costs and over working people
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 12:46 AM

That is totally an American thing...
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:46 AM

yes! in the end treating people better usually leads to more productive and happier workers
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:46 AM

★ Spotlighted from Julie Myers

I would think so many companies and organizations would benefit from this

RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:46 AM

yes!
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 12:46 AM

We're so bad about respecting work-life balance!
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 12:46 AM

It's like the "Golden Ration" in graphic design.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 12:46 AM

"Golden Ratio"
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:46 AM

our combine field is a bit new, but has recently been named by Forbes as one of the top 10 growth industries of last year! so lots of promise in this area of study
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:47 AM

omg we are!
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 12:47 AM

That's pretty cool!
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:47 AM

and looking at it across the board we are one of THE WORST at work life balance, it is embarrassing
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:47 AM

study after study shows that more vacation time leads to better workers and more loyal workers
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 12:48 AM

But it's not like we don't have enough knowledge to know better.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 12:48 AM

Exactly!
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 12:48 AM

WHat gives, then?
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:48 AM

work life balance was a huge topic we discussed in the health and stress class
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 12:48 AM

Why does the Industrial work model hang on?
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:48 AM

companies still believe this bottom line, non-flexible work schedule non-sense
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 12:48 AM

★ Spotlighted from Julie Myers

Reminds me of W. Edwards Demming's philosophy about quality http://asq.org/learn-about-quality/total-quality-management/overview/deming-points.html

RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:49 AM

we live in a globalized market where people are having families and men and/or women want time off or time to spend with their families
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:49 AM

this can be accomplished while putting in a full days work
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 12:49 AM

It's so...archaic. SO patronizing. So...over!
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 12:49 AM

Yes! People can get more done if they're energized!
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:49 AM

yes the company might have to hire a few more workers, but in the long run the health care bills and possibly divorce and mental health issues also drain their finances
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 12:49 AM

If they're working at their "peak times"
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:50 AM

companies are still thinking short term where as the worker is usually always thinking long term
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:50 AM

that is a dangerous disconnect in my opinion
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 12:50 AM

Oooh. WOW.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 12:50 AM

When you put it like that, it sounds like a recipe for disaster...
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:50 AM

one of the jobs we have as I/O psychologists is to bridge the misunderstanding gap between management and the individual worker, everyone needs to be on the same page for it to work well
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 12:51 AM

I would think so. That makes so much sense!
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:51 AM

it really is and disgruntled employees can cause harm in other dangerous ways for companies
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 12:52 AM

There's this principle I've been trying to incorporate into my life that seems apropos here, "Our needs are very rarely in conflict, only our means of satisfying them."
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 12:52 AM

★ Spotlighted from Julie Myers

Communication errors occur all the time in any industry

RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:52 AM

financially especially, office theft comes to mind, hostile work environments, disgruntled workers, all of these things cause companies money to resolve, so why not just treat them humanely in the first place
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:52 AM

and get the workers involved in as many issues as is possible! make them feel a part of the team!
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 12:52 AM

Passive-Aggressive Post-It Notes...
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:53 AM

that is true Julie, which is why we should ward against them when we can
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:53 AM

we know certain things will be issues, when a company decides to make a pay cut for workers he knows there will be issues but how does that owner handle that descision?
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:54 AM

does he harshly bark out the order and just expect everyone to comply, or does he sit down and have a heart to heart with his workers explaining why and that he too has been hurt by this
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:54 AM

these things really matter and are in my mind what make for truly successful companies and ones that usually stick around longer
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:55 AM

ya know aside from the big corps who already have billions
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:55 AM

Psychology would tell us barking out orders could make workers feel demeaned and could spread through the company very fast creating a distrusting environment
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 12:55 AM

It seems like this shift in workplace psych is maybe realted to other societal shifts. If you follow me, the working model has been very Patriarchal, run by a dominant male - the "order barker"
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 12:56 AM

And so have families.
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:56 AM

definitely! :)
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 12:56 AM

The dominant father. The "order barker"
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 12:56 AM

I feel like family structure is changing.
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:56 AM

and don't get me wrong there is still an argument that certain jobs like machine/assembly line work doesn't have much autonomy for workers, but we can still give them basic respect
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 12:56 AM

We don't want order barkers anymore.
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:56 AM

well and nobody likes to be barked at that should be psychology 101
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:57 AM

We feel attacked when people do that and then what do we want to do? Retaliate.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 12:57 AM

Agreed! And, in the case of families, we can give children basic respect and as much autonomy/participation as is appropriate.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 12:57 AM

Yes!
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 12:57 AM

When we're shames, we want to "get even"
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:57 AM

Which is why constructive and objective criticism is SO emphasized in my field, things will go wrong, you will have to fire people, but you should do it in the most objective way possible
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 12:57 AM

To rebuild the sense of self.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 12:58 AM

★ Spotlighted from Julie Myers

I have to help my institution make some tough decisions this coming fall. The President decided to hold "Listening Sessions" so every employee can make suggestion balancing the budget

RT

"about"

RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:58 AM

Exactly! I am a big believer in giving kids that autonomy
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 12:58 AM

That sounds positive, Julie.
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:58 AM

Julie it is tough which is why people like us are brought in and why objective performance appraisals are so important
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:59 AM

funny thing ALOT of companies do not give out truly objective / non-bias performance appraisals
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:59 AM

some don't even give any out!
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:59 AM

★ Spotlighted from Julie Myers

We went from an authoritarian administration to a cooperative administration. It is a welcomed change...

RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 12:59 AM

Dude!
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:59 AM

A change I hope to see throughout the business world I hope Julie! :)
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 12:59 AM

I listened to this incredible audiobook that talked all about that!
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 12:59 AM

It's called, Thanks for the Feedback.
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 12:59 AM

★ Spotlighted from Julie Myers

I hope so too!

RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:00 AM

It's really great.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:00 AM

Talks about how to HANDLE GETTING feedback.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:00 AM

Because we talk so much about how to give it...
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 1:00 AM

Yay! Yes constructive feedback is all people are really asking for and a lot of companies don't give that or don't understand why it is SO important, but giving someone that eliminates a lot of negative issues that can arise for the person and for
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:00 AM

But it mentions that performance reviews are so sticky for so many companies.
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 1:00 AM

the company
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 1:00 AM

and IT'S SO FRICKING SIMPLE!!
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 1:00 AM

and logical
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 1:00 AM

which I love
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:01 AM

It can also be very emotional, too, though.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:01 AM

Which is why people shy away from it.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:01 AM

People get feelings hurt, etc.
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 1:01 AM

which is why it is important to have both administrative and developmental performance appraisals
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 1:01 AM

now we are getting into it haha
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 1:02 AM

so most companies use performance appraisals only for administrative purposes (hiring, firing, raises etc..)
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 1:02 AM

but evaluating the person developmentally a different times throughout the year gives the person a chance to see what they will be evaluated on in the administrative review and give them several chances to fix it, get help, or develop their skills
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:03 AM

★ Spotlighted from Julie Myers

You would think they would use appraisals to motivate the employees

RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:03 AM

I do think most people want to improve, want to be proficient and satisfactory. That in turn gives them satisfaction.
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 1:03 AM

this eliminates the fear of yearly performance appraisals or should... appraisals have such a negative connotation but using it developmentally can help people both in their current job and develop skills for the future
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 1:03 AM

yes and we have the tools to give that to people
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:04 AM

But it's hard to hear it if you're NOT proficient.
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 1:04 AM

and again it would make them happier to work for a company who invests in them
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:04 AM

Yeah, that book helped me see some cool best-practices.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:04 AM

Like asking people what their preferred mode of appreciation is.
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 1:04 AM

well then you have options like moving that person horizontally within the company, maybe the person is better suited elsewhere
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:04 AM

And their preferred mode of feedback.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:04 AM

True!
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 1:04 AM

yes Julie I think appraisals can be used to motivate when used in a developmental capacity
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:05 AM

Looking for best fits is a great idea!
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:05 AM

★ Spotlighted from Julie Myers

I think it is an intrinsic needfor most people

RM

Rachel McDonnell · 1:05 AM

and that's the thing too, managers need to be so much more involved in this process
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:05 AM

YES!
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:05 AM

And there needs to be better vocabulary.
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 1:05 AM

managers should know their employees, know how people take criticism and adjust accordingly it is part of being management
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 1:05 AM

but management seems to be the place we get stuck ALOT in our field frustrating
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:05 AM

Yes!
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 1:06 AM

★ Spotlighted from Julie Myers

Oh! I agree, Rebecca: better vocabulary is needed

RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:06 AM

And offering coaching is an art!
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 1:06 AM

Yes we need to develop the intrinsic needs of people! and companies who nurture that will stick
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 1:06 AM

yes! I was going to say one thing you can do with the Master's I will be getting this spring is to be an executive coach
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 1:07 AM

but yes the managers that is something they can do to set themselves apart
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:07 AM

Cool!
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 1:07 AM

be more involved with your workers, and don't talk down to them! the stories I have heard! :(
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:07 AM

But...scary! I'd be afraid of filling my day with Divas!
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 1:07 AM

★ Spotlighted from Julie Myers

SO how does a company go about finding an I/O specialist?

RM

Rachel McDonnell · 1:07 AM

haha I know right Rebecca? I don't know if I want to be stuck in corporate offices the rest of my life ;)
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 1:08 AM

Julie there are hundreds consulting firms out there
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 1:08 AM

major corporations also usually hire in-house consultants too, which they hire on full time
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 1:08 AM

Target does this
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 1:09 AM

Some people go into business on their own, or are professors by day and consultants whenever else they have time :)
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 1:09 AM

It is an interesting field because we are so hands on and applied it is hard to bridge the gap between research and practical application, but there is so much good stuff going on right now, in science in general
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:10 AM

That's absolutely true!
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:10 AM

And I/O psychology is so sorely needed in this country.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:11 AM

Goodness, do we need remediation!
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 1:11 AM

especially when talking about our failing economy and motivation, in my mind we are fools if we DON'T stress the intrinsic motives of individual workers
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:11 AM

People spend so much time in the work environment, but most people are dissatisfied or feel powerless within that environment.
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 1:11 AM

we are now in our field discussing if our old ways will work; fit the person to the org, we are now thinking the best way could be to fit the org to the person/people
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:11 AM

People NEED work.
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 1:12 AM

yes and then bring that dissatisfaction home
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:12 AM

Oh, that's such a sea change!
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 1:12 AM

the violence at work/home studies don't lie there is a scary overlap!
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:12 AM

True, true!
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:12 AM

★ Spotlighted from Julie Myers

So true @ Rachel. People bring their work home: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

RM

Rachel McDonnell · 1:12 AM

right? I am excited to see where the debate takes us, obviously has challenges, but as a practioner the only challenge we truly have is making sure the company will allow the changes we are suggesting
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 1:13 AM

yes Julie and all the more reason to show our children a balanced work and home life
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:13 AM

:)
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 1:13 AM

I found this quote I liek
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 1:13 AM

The purpose of I/O psychology is “to enhance the ndignity and performance of human beings, and the norganizations they work in, by advancing the science nand knowledge of human behavior” (Rucci, 2008)
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 1:13 AM

to enhance the dignity
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 1:13 AM

of human beings
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 1:13 AM

:)
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:13 AM

That IS nice!
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 1:14 AM

and that is what it comes down to, yes you can build your companies with mediocre care for your workers but in the end financially and potentially legally you are shooting yourself in the foot
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:15 AM

How's THAT for a bottom line?
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 1:15 AM

I should also mention my field helps protect companies legally from being wrongfully sued by utilizing objective job performance measures and is trained in the creation of psychometric testing
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 1:16 AM

so we help organizations out in a big way, but while also helping out the workers, if there is a disparity problem within an org it is usually easy to find after chatting with every day employees
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:16 AM

It can't help but also produce more equity.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:16 AM

:)
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 1:17 AM

we are also trained to recognize adverse impact and other discrimination in tests or paperwork companies could be currently using
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 1:17 AM

yep! and that is the bottom line the company wouldn't exist without the owners, the middle management, or the everyday worker
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 1:17 AM

they are all important
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 1:18 AM

You are taking Social Psych right now, that was always an interesting area of study, Personality is a favorite area of mine
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:18 AM

:)
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:19 AM

Yeah - what makes people work is interesting.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:19 AM

What I'm really loving, though, is finding out that things like PEACE PSYCHOLOGY exist!
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 1:19 AM

social psych is cool cuz you get to talk about societies fundamental influences on us, even as we are developing into our own people
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 1:19 AM

ok that is a new one to me, can you explain it a bit?
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 1:19 AM

it sounds awesome! :)
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 1:20 AM

there is something called Health Psychology that started in the 70's sounds a bit like holistic healing mixed with psych
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:21 AM

Well, I don't know too much, I am just larning about the Social Psychology Network and all of the fields it has linked to it, and all of the resources available from each field.
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 1:21 AM

ooh that is a good resource too
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 1:21 AM

http://www.spsp.org/
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:21 AM

Anyway, Peace Psychology seems to be a field that's trying to figure out why humans can get along in certain circumstances. How we can GROW peace.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:22 AM

Which, if anything were timely, that certainly is!

We're not firing FEWER missiles...
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 1:22 AM

definitely!
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 1:23 AM

we are firing MORE
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:23 AM

So I feel like Psychology could possibly help us figure out how to stop.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:23 AM

How to stop firinf more missiles.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:23 AM

How to stop trashing the planet.
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 1:23 AM

definitely we as humans grow and learn a lot of behaviors that maybe personally would might originally not have exhibited but since they are so rewarded in our society they have a greater impact on us
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:24 AM

Right?
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 1:24 AM

and there does need to be a push for more social responsibility on a social level and a business level! corporate responsibility is a new thing that has also entered our field, but it is so new we can't tell yet if it is just a fad the business world
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 1:24 AM

uses to sell
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 1:25 AM

that's another thing business consultants and I-O consultants are similar but with I-O consultants yu get the ADDED bonus of having someone who is fluent in psychology and uses it alongside business tactics
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:25 AM

:)
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 1:26 AM

I am not looking forward to taking business electives this year, after years of Psych all I am going to hear is
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 1:26 AM

"money, money, but about the money" :p
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:26 AM

LOL
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 1:26 AM

I have learned that with certain companies they won't change unless you show it to them in a way where they can save or make money
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:26 AM

I have a friend who is a green business guy, and yes, he agrees.
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 1:26 AM

I may be too hippie for an MBA class but we will see haha ;)
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:27 AM

But, in the end, what you do makes MORE PROFITABLE companies.
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:27 AM

So, you win, anyway.
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 1:27 AM

yes exactly! we are in it to help everyone succeed! :)
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 1:27 AM

just because we take a pro-person perspective doesn't mean we don't want the companies to succeed
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 1:27 AM

that is a misnomer and one we should do away with. EVERYONE CAN SUCCEED
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:28 AM

You want the WHOLE company to succeed!
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 1:28 AM

Yes! From Janitor to CEO
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 1:28 AM

RM

Rachel McDonnell · 1:28 AM

RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:28 AM

*EVERYONE
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 1:29 AM

exactly and once you give a company that value system and they stick with it they will have people BEGGING to work there, it increases the companies popularity and business
RM

Rachel McDonnell · 1:29 AM

I mean look at COSTCO for instance!
RT

Rebecca Westbrook Toker · 1:29 AM

RM

Rachel McDonnell · 1:29 AM

RM

Rachel McDonnell · 1:30 AM

all of these big and little things about a company adds up and can make or break a companies reputation
