Uncaring judges seem to think driving hundreds of miles to access basic healthcare just not constitute "an undue burden." With clinics closing around the country, tireless activists like Angie Hayes are stepping up to provide logistical support to patients seeking care. nAs the Director of the Clinic Access Support Network, she assists patients navigating transportation, waiting periods and other hurtles. nJoin us to find out more about the state of repro care & how you can help!

Hi, everyone! Thanks for coming to "Undue Burden? AbortionCare Logistics" with the fantastic Angie Hayes! (new ProTip: there’s a mobile app: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/tawkers/id791417999?mt=8 )
KK

Real quick, if you’re new to Tawkers, Angie and I will be chatting on the left. And if you’re signed in (it only takes two minutes to set up a profile!), you can add comments/questions on the right. Interrupt any time with questions!

Also, definitely use the “arrow” icons to share comments on social media & ask people you know will dig the discussion to join in.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 12:01 AM

Angie’s organization — the Clinic Access Support Network — is one of the groups stepping up to help people jump the unnecessary hurtles to care.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 12:01 AM

When a person is pregnant and doesn’t want to be, it can be terrifying to discover that options they thought they had aren’t available. CASN builds bridges and aids those who need help navigating the rough landscape.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 12:01 AM

Angie, thank you SO much for donating an hour of your precious time today to chat!

Thanks for having me!
KK

Katie Klabusich · 12:04 AM

Before you tell us a little about CASN and how it got started, I thought a judge said driving a day round trip wasn’t much of a burden. So what’s everyone complaining about? -__-

Well, my friends and I volunteer at the local clinic escorting women and their support through the protesters every Saturday. We started noticing people coming in by taxi. Then in August someone posted anon. in a forum on FB that they needed a ride.

I knew I was working the day she needed help. But I also knew I know loads of awesome people around Houston. So I threw her my phone number.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 12:06 AM

I mean, everyone in Texas has a car, right? :/

My awesome friends chipped in some money and a ride for her. And we decided we needed to organize and help out.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 12:07 AM

That's amazing.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 12:07 AM

I love Texas, btw, for people who didn't already know.

Most of what we do is drive people who live in Houston to their appointments and home. You can't drive yourself home from a sedated procedure.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 12:08 AM

Right. I had to be escorted home as well, and it was just a block and a half.

But we also find people who hop a bus ride to Houston and don't have housing once they're here (that pesky 24hour waiting period!)
KK

Katie Klabusich · 12:09 AM

We do a lot of that in NYC too, for people who come for second trimester procedures from states where it isn't legal.

So we organize and pay for a hotel, their incidentals, hang out with them, offer moral support, buy their food.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 12:09 AM

That's really amazing!
KK

Katie Klabusich · 12:09 AM

I stole the title with the question from this really great <cough> judge.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 12:09 AM

Judge Edith Jones is a trip, if anyone who’s unfamiliar is interested in who keeps upholding these bullshit laws:nhttp://www.austinchronicle.com/news/2014-04-04/no-undue-burden-5th-circuit-upholds-hb-2/
KK

Katie Klabusich · 12:09 AM

Judge Jones: "Although some clinics may be required to shut their doors," Jones wrote, "there is no showing whatsoever that any woman will lack reasonable access to a clinic within Texas."

But Christine had a good point though. Not everyone has a car. and even those who do, they are driving a LOOOOOONG way sometimes.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 12:10 AM

So that goes to @C's comment -- well, you've got a CAR, RIGHT? Ugh. What's th big deal.

There are pasts of Texas that are closer to Central America (or Canada on the other side) then those cities are to places in state
KK

Katie Klabusich · 12:11 AM

It's really pretty amazingly privileged. Even if you had a car, 400 miles is pretty far. I mean, come on.

So these women, not only have to take multiple days off, pay $800 for their procedure, then they have to pay to travel across state!
KK

Katie Klabusich · 12:12 AM

★ Spotlighted from Dalea Lugo

Healthcare access should not be rendered further with needless laws. A lot of poor and rural people do not have adequate transportation.

I know there have been times in my life when I wouldn't have been able to eat or pay rent if I had to do that.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 12:12 AM

I'm not sure I could have footed my termination in that situation.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 12:12 AM

And I was early first trimester.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 12:13 AM

@Kendra -- PREACH

Then we get in documentation status issues. There are lots of undocumented immigrants in Texas. And there are checkpoints they wouldn't make it past. They face deportations and separation from their family on top of everything else!
KK

Katie Klabusich · 12:14 AM

that's a big problem in the RGV (rio grande valley), right?
KK

Katie Klabusich · 12:14 AM

No woman will lack reasonable access to a clinic in Texas?? I was speaking with a young woman the other day who was very stressed out over finding transportation to a clinic in Texas, plus a place to stay. No undue burden my ass.

早早

Also, living in the Beaumont area, I hear so many horror stories from women, especially Women of Color not having the access that they need. Also at Lamar University in Beaumont, there are so many young women (students) that need the help

早早

Most of the people we help are lower socioeconomic.
KK

KK

@Kendra I think in most states that have Abortion Funds, those are the groups that help with logistics.
KK

Are there similar groups in other states? I know Georgia has 10-ish clinics, but they're all in Atlanta, which can be a quite a drive from folks in the southern part of the state.

KK

Katie Klabusich · 12:27 AM

Or they can refer you. Texas is just so massive mileage wise, that it's not doable for the abortion funds there to fill those gaps. They have all they can handle trying to get people appointments and funding for the procedure before they're too far

I think so too Lucy. It's hard to put into words what we do as far as emotional support. Its a reactive thing. We try to be whatever they need us to be. A shoulder, a sounding board, a silent partner, and entertainer and distraction...

No one is allowed to go back in the rooms with the patients. Be we drive them there, wait with them if they want us to. Drive them home. Or if they are staying all weekend, we hang out with them. Dinner, coffee, whatever.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 12:39 AM

That's pretty amazing. It's a big commitment to assist someone along that whole way.

That's a great term @Kendra. Pro-voice
KK

People coming from out of town usually couldn't afford to bring their whole family down, so they are alone.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 12:41 AM

Well, someone has to stay home and take care of the kids. (60% of people having abortions have kids already)

Oh, that's something that surprised me about this. More than half of the women we help out already have kids!!
KK

They are also paying for child care while they go to the appointments!!
KK

Katie Klabusich · 12:42 AM

That can really spike the cost. So there's unpaid time off work, plus travel, plus childcare -- and that's before you pay for the procedure. o.O

I can't even imagine going to an appointment like that then having to go home and be mom!
KK

I don't have kids of my own, but I'm a school teacher. I know what it's like to have kids around! Wow! These women are making a tough choice, and are kinds being super heroes through it. It's something they shouldn't have to be.
KK

Katie Klabusich · 12:44 AM

So, when we add travel, hotel, childcare and (often) unpaid time off to the cost, what else are we missing? anything>

That's about all that we deal with directly I think. We try to be Janes of all trades. Anythign they need as they need it. The only thing we don't do is help pay for the procedure.
KK

Tthat's what abortion funds are for! (if only we didn't need them)

KK

Katie Klabusich · 12:53 AM

Yeah, the consolidation of "health care" is a big problem in a lot of areas. It especially affects admitting privileges laws like HB2 in Texas. Abortion providers don't need them b/c 1/1000000 procedures send someone to the hospital.
