When you watch The Daily Show and The Colbert Report, do you ever notice how incredibly pumped up the live crowds are? Do you think they get there on their own? They don't. It takes a great warm-up comedian. And Kevin Bartini is the guy who does it. We'll Tawk about reaching political heads through humor and his daily inspirations for his work.

In general I am pretty happy. I havejust as many issues as the next guy but as far as comics go I don't fit the stereotype too much.

My first time was as an apprentice at the Williamstown Theater Festival. Lewis Black was teaching a class on stand-up.

IT turned out to be the best summer of my life. Once the fest ended I started doing Guest Spots at the Comedy Works in Albany.

That first show was in a black box theater that sat 99 and ther was standing room only. So I figure about 110 to 120 people there.

For the first year I was only doing guest spots at the Comedy Works and that was on the late shows so I was often playing to 8 or 10 people.

I'm a joke writer. But I studied with the UCB to learn improv and now am very comfortable improvising.

In fact when I do warm up for tv shows I am not doing any stand-up. It is basically all improvisation.

Joke writing is definitely work. It takes discipline. I have to sit down and write out a lot of stuff to get to a joke. Then I have to edit it down and work on it.

Some time a joke comes out fully formed. But more often I start with a thought or an observation. Then I kind of mind map it.

I start typing out everty thought I ahve ona subject then I try to string those thoughts together.

After that I work on punching it up and editing it down.

A solid two or three minute bit may have started as three pages typed out and after a few months it may not look at all like what I started with.

No. They have the same fan base and they tape a block apart so the crowds are very similar.

A good mix of tourists and locals but I'd bet that on a an average two thirds of either audice have traveled two hours or less to be there.

I give a lot of credit to Jon Stewart for the general atmosphere. If he were a dick or a tyrant to work for then the vibe in the office would be totally diffrent. I think he leads by example.

am lucky that the audiences at Colbert and TDS are so great. There are shows that tape in NYC that have to pay people to be in their audiences. Those people are much tougher to warm up.
