When you watch The Daily Show and The Colbert Report, do you ever notice how incredibly pumped up the live crowds are? Do you think they get there on their own? They don't. It takes a great warm-up comedian. And Kevin Bartini is the guy who does it. We'll Tawk about reaching political heads through humor and his daily inspirations for his work.

Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:15 AM

Mr. Bartini, I presume?
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:15 AM

This is what's called "comedic timing."
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:16 AM

I just emailed him.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:17 AM

But in the meantime, let me give you a little background on how we got here.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:17 AM

Kevin is a friend of Tawkers' own Kelly Carlin
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:17 AM

agh - the sweet feeling of relief…
KB

Kevin Bartini · 2:17 AM

Ok I think I am on. It keeps losing connections. Hopefully this goes through ok.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:18 AM

that was supposed to say "ahh"
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:18 AM

welcome my friend! It's great to have you here!
KB

Kevin Bartini · 2:18 AM

Thanks Jordan.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:19 AM

So since Kelly is both beloved on Tawkers and the source of our friendship I thought she deserved a shout out
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:19 AM

so take a moment to say something great about her
KB

Kevin Bartini · 2:19 AM

Yeah, Kelly is great. Jordan and I met at one ofer her parties actually.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:20 AM

Yes, in fact I remember you deep in conversation with Paul Provenza, who has also done a Tawk with me.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:20 AM

small world
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:20 AM

It's Kelly's world. We're just living in it.
KB

Kevin Bartini · 2:20 AM

I was really excited to meet Provenza. I was a big fan of his growing up.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:20 AM

★ Spotlighted from Rick Rosner

So far, so good.

Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:21 AM

So I found out that you were also a comedian, you made me laugh, so I wanted to bring you on. But it was only after we scheduled there Tawk that I learned you warm up The Daily Show and The Colbert Report, which are like, sacred to me
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:22 AM

★ Spotlighted from Rick Rosner

I need to be amused. I have 11-22 hang over.

Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:22 AM

No pressure Kevin. I'm just saying, you're the one who gets paid to be funny….
KB

Kevin Bartini · 2:23 AM

Oh cool. I am glad you like the show. I have been a huge fan of both shows since they started. It is amazing to be able to work for them.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:23 AM

OK - so I'm like a shrink. I always like to start with the childhood.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:23 AM

Were you born a comic, or were you made one?
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:24 AM

show us where they touched you
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:24 AM

EMOTIONALLY, he means…
KB

Kevin Bartini · 2:24 AM

I was funny as a kid and my dad was funny. Stand up is what we watched along with SNL reruns and Three Stooges movies.
KB

Kevin Bartini · 2:24 AM

I wanted to do stand-up when I was about 6 years old.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:25 AM

The fact that you spent quality time with your father already separates you from a large population of professional comedians.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:25 AM

Are you angry at him for denying you good material?
KB

Kevin Bartini · 2:25 AM

Yeah. I am pretty unlucky that I come from a normal family.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:25 AM

that sucks, man. I'm really sorry.
KB

Kevin Bartini · 2:25 AM

They don't give me too much material or emotional scars to work with.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:26 AM

So wait a minute! Are you…GASP…happy?
KB

Kevin Bartini · 2:26 AM

But my dad and I definitely have bonded over comedy for my entire life.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:26 AM

Because that would seem fatal to comedy!
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:27 AM

happiness, I mean.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:27 AM

or can you be funny and happy at the same time?
KB

Kevin Bartini · 2:27 AM

In general I am pretty happy. I havejust as many issues as the next guy but as far as comics go I don't fit the stereotype too much.
KB

Kevin Bartini · 2:28 AM

You can be funny and happy.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:28 AM

Right. Like for example, it sure seemed as though you love your wife. That was a little odd, too.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:28 AM

★ Spotlighted from Rick Rosner

You're happy now, but wait -the Tawk is young . . .

KB

Kevin Bartini · 2:28 AM

Haha Rick.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:29 AM

Yes, Kevin. You have stumbled into a sinister plot of mental and emotional degradation.
KB

Kevin Bartini · 2:29 AM

My wife is great. I love having her at cocktail parties because she is a lot more extrtoverted then I am. I need a few belts to loosen up but she's a natural.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:30 AM

Yeah, she was very cool. OK, so you're 6 years old, you want to do comedy, so how long until you did?
KB

Kevin Bartini · 2:31 AM

I started doing stand-up at age 20.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:31 AM

smooth or rough beginnings?
KB

Kevin Bartini · 2:31 AM

My first time was as an apprentice at the Williamstown Theater Festival. Lewis Black was teaching a class on stand-up.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:32 AM

nice!
KB

Kevin Bartini · 2:32 AM

Then one night he had some of us from class perform for the festival. So that show was my first time.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:32 AM

wow - that's like learning to ski at the Winter Olympics
KB

Kevin Bartini · 2:32 AM

I love Lewis Black. I literally apprenticed for an entire summer just because they had him as a teacher.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:33 AM

that was a very good move
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:33 AM

so how many people at your first performance?
KB

Kevin Bartini · 2:33 AM

IT turned out to be the best summer of my life. Once the fest ended I started doing Guest Spots at the Comedy Works in Albany.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:34 AM

What size rooms were you playing right off the bat?
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:34 AM

seems pretty audacious…and bad-ass.
KB

Kevin Bartini · 2:34 AM

That first show was in a black box theater that sat 99 and ther was standing room only. So I figure about 110 to 120 people there.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:34 AM

most people debut in front of 4 other comedians at an open mic
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:35 AM

★ Spotlighted from Rick Rosner

The best summer of my life was when I first discovered sex with someone other than myself.

KB

Kevin Bartini · 2:35 AM

For the first year I was only doing guest spots at the Comedy Works and that was on the late shows so I was often playing to 8 or 10 people.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:35 AM

Rick's sounds like a pretty good summer, too.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:35 AM

So were you a joke writer? an improviser?
KB

Kevin Bartini · 2:36 AM

I'm a joke writer. But I studied with the UCB to learn improv and now am very comfortable improvising.
KB

Kevin Bartini · 2:36 AM

In fact when I do warm up for tv shows I am not doing any stand-up. It is basically all improvisation.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:37 AM

first good joke you ever wrote?
KB

Kevin Bartini · 2:37 AM

First good joke I ever wrote, believe it or not I still do from time to time. I am pretty sure I opened up my first album with it.
KB

Kevin Bartini · 2:37 AM

It goes...
KB

Kevin Bartini · 2:38 AM

My girlfriend dumped me. She said we couldn't get married or have a real future together because I'm not Jewish.
KB

Kevin Bartini · 2:38 AM

And That really pissed me off because she's not Jewish either.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:39 AM

Legitimate laugh out loud!
KB

Kevin Bartini · 2:39 AM

Thanks
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:39 AM

very good! not surprised you still use it!
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:39 AM

So how does joke writing work for you? Is it work? Is it inspiration? Is it both?\
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:39 AM

★ Spotlighted from Rick Rosner

Not bad, but only to a limited audience.

Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:39 AM

grumpy old manh
KB

Kevin Bartini · 2:39 AM

I use it because it works and also for the sentimentality of all these years later still doing my first joke.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:40 AM

but joke writing in general…do you sit down to write jokes, or wait for them to come to you?
KB

Kevin Bartini · 2:41 AM

Joke writing is definitely work. It takes discipline. I have to sit down and write out a lot of stuff to get to a joke. Then I have to edit it down and work on it.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:41 AM

Do you come up with an observation about life and then set out to craft the funniest way possible to share it?
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:41 AM

★ Spotlighted from Rick Rosner

Life is very amusing, but describing it is very difficult.

KB

Kevin Bartini · 2:41 AM

I sit down to write jokes but I am also open to whatever comes out on stage. I always try to have a notpad close by.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:42 AM

How much of your material is political / news, and how much everyday life?
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:42 AM

★ Spotlighted from Rick Rosner

Kind of like an acid trip.

KB

Kevin Bartini · 2:42 AM

Some time a joke comes out fully formed. But more often I start with a thought or an observation. Then I kind of mind map it.
KB

Kevin Bartini · 2:42 AM

I start typing out everty thought I ahve ona subject then I try to string those thoughts together.
KB

Kevin Bartini · 2:43 AM

After that I work on punching it up and editing it down.
KB

Kevin Bartini · 2:43 AM

A solid two or three minute bit may have started as three pages typed out and after a few months it may not look at all like what I started with.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:43 AM

Off the top of your head, what are some of the larger insights you've had about humanity or existence while writing?
KB

Kevin Bartini · 2:44 AM

I don't currently do any political stuff.
KB

Kevin Bartini · 2:44 AM

I have done it in the past. But lately it isn;t what interests me.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:44 AM

that's a little ironic
KB

Kevin Bartini · 2:44 AM

Why?
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:44 AM

given the shows you work on - or maybe you getting inundated there?
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:45 AM

★ Spotlighted from Seth Hochman

Just got in

Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:45 AM

welcome mai brotha
KB

Kevin Bartini · 2:45 AM

Actually I don;t do politics for a large part because of the shows I work on.
KB

Kevin Bartini · 2:45 AM

When I warm up the audience I never want to talk politics or current events because tht is what they wil be doing.
KB

Kevin Bartini · 2:46 AM

I don;t want to be in the position of talking about something in the news only to have stepped on something that Jon or Stephen will be doing ten minutes later.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:46 AM

Yeah, that's like playing The Allman Brothers before an Allman Brothers concert -you don't do it
KB

Kevin Bartini · 2:46 AM

Exactly.
KB

Kevin Bartini · 2:46 AM

Then when I do stand-up I don;t want to talk politics again because of wghere I work.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:48 AM

hey, so I really liked that question from earlier. Off the top of your head, what are some of the best insights you've had about humanity or existence when writing jokes?
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:48 AM

and while you're thinking, allow me to share a dialogue from the forum which made me laugh:
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:49 AM

★ Spotlighted from Rick Rosner

McCanless, are you still here? Say something - I'm boring myself.

Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:49 AM

yeah, i'm here - I think I may be more hung over than you Rick
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:49 AM

★ Spotlighted from Rick Rosner

The day they banned Quaaludes should be a National Day of Mourning.

Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:49 AM

★ Spotlighted from Seth Hochman

Maybe Colorado will legalize them

Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:49 AM

★ Spotlighted from Rick Rosner

I'd crawl there on my hands and knees . . .

KB

Kevin Bartini · 2:49 AM

I have found lately that virtually everyone likes a good dick joke.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:49 AM

Wow, I was expecting some insight that would change my worldview, but I guess that'll do.
KB

Kevin Bartini · 2:50 AM

I don't know if I am all that deep.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:50 AM

if there is humanity out there - it would be in a dick joke
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:50 AM

So earlier you said that your audience warm up work is almost all improv
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:50 AM

I'm assuming that means a lot of back and forth with the audiences?
KB

Kevin Bartini · 2:51 AM

Yes. Lots of crowd work.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:51 AM

OK - first of all, is there a difference between the two crowds?
KB

Kevin Bartini · 2:52 AM

No. They have the same fan base and they tape a block apart so the crowds are very similar.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:52 AM

More tourists or locals?
KB

Kevin Bartini · 2:52 AM

A good mix of tourists and locals but I'd bet that on a an average two thirds of either audice have traveled two hours or less to be there.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:53 AM

What percentage of the crowd wears canvass Converse Chuck Taylors?
KB

Kevin Bartini · 2:54 AM

At least 90%
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:54 AM

lol -I knew it!
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:54 AM

have you ever crowd surfed?
KB

Kevin Bartini · 2:54 AM

★ Spotlighted from Seth Hochman

Is the environment really laid back at the Daily Show---like it seems it would be?

KB

Kevin Bartini · 2:54 AM

Everyone at TDS works really hard
KB

Kevin Bartini · 2:55 AM

But the environment is pretty chill.
KB

Kevin Bartini · 2:55 AM

I was really impressed from the very beginning at how confident and nice everyone seemed.
KB

Kevin Bartini · 2:55 AM

The entire staff have always been friendsly and welcoming to me.
KB

Kevin Bartini · 2:56 AM

So from my perspective I would say it is pretty relaxed...but on the other hand any writers room is going to get stressfull. I'm just not privy to seeing that.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:56 AM

maybe they are nice to you, but would they let you do this:
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:56 AM

★ Spotlighted from John Baker

do a fashion segment and get them into some checkerboard slipons

Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:56 AM

★ Spotlighted from Seth Hochman

I saw an interview with John Stewart where there were dogs walking all over the place and people looking like they were right at home. Seems like an awesome atmosphere to work in

Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:56 AM

★ Spotlighted from Rick Rosner

Don't trust them.

KB

Kevin Bartini · 2:56 AM

If they would put me on the show I'd dress head to toe in checkerboard.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:57 AM

I think you'd wear that well!
KB

Kevin Bartini · 2:57 AM

There are always at least three or four dogs there.
KB

Kevin Bartini · 2:58 AM

I give a lot of credit to Jon Stewart for the general atmosphere. If he were a dick or a tyrant to work for then the vibe in the office would be totally diffrent. I think he leads by example.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 2:58 AM

So I want to learn a little more about the people who come to the show. does a good camaraderie form among the audience? Are they digging each other?
KB

Kevin Bartini · 2:58 AM

★ Spotlighted from Seth Hochman

Not sure if you mentioned this but who is better to work with Jon or Stephen?

KB

Kevin Bartini · 2:59 AM

Both Jon ad Stephen are great to work for. Stephen is a little more gregarious with me. I have a bit more access to him.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 3:00 AM

who has better snacks in their green room?
KB

Kevin Bartini · 3:00 AM

I've never been in either green room.
KB

Kevin Bartini · 3:00 AM

But there are always great snacks lying around The Daily Show.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 3:00 AM

(it would've been OK to lie for humor's sake…)
KB

Kevin Bartini · 3:01 AM

I think the audiences if you do your job right are digging each other.
KB

Kevin Bartini · 3:01 AM

Most of them are coming to the show for the first time. They got their tickets months in advance and have been looking forward to this for weeks.
KB

Kevin Bartini · 3:02 AM

So they come in in a good mood. As long as my warm up isn't crues there is no reason that they should not be in a good mood.
KB

Kevin Bartini · 3:02 AM

am lucky that the audiences at Colbert and TDS are so great. There are shows that tape in NYC that have to pay people to be in their audiences. Those people are much tougher to warm up.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 3:03 AM

I guess I have a suspicion (maybe a fantasy) that anyone who would go to a taping of either show would actually like one another. It's like a roomful of friends who have never met.
KB

Kevin Bartini · 3:03 AM

You are probably at least part right Jordan.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 3:03 AM

OK - so what are some of the best things you've heard from an audience member at either show?
KB

Kevin Bartini · 3:04 AM

I am going to dissapoint you on this one Jordan. I really don't remember anything that happens out there.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 3:04 AM

thrown panties, etc
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 3:05 AM

all the drugs?
KB

Kevin Bartini · 3:05 AM

To do what I do I have to be completely in the moment. I don;t knw how the brain works but aafter I get off stage the night is just a blur.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 3:05 AM

plausible deniability. I like that, Kevin.
KB

Kevin Bartini · 3:06 AM

IT s kind of the same with stand-up to be honest.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 3:06 AM

How about ANY audience, ever?
KB

Kevin Bartini · 3:06 AM

A comic can remember his best set and his worst set. Everything else just fades to gray.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 3:07 AM

sounds like hands of poker…
KB

Kevin Bartini · 3:07 AM

Exactly. Or like a meal.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 3:07 AM

OK -so tell us the story of trying to get a street named after George Carlin.
KB

Kevin Bartini · 3:07 AM

Sure.
KB

Kevin Bartini · 3:08 AM

Gerge Carlin Way is something I started working on three years ago.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 3:08 AM

It sounds like a new age philosophy
KB

Kevin Bartini · 3:08 AM

I live kind of close to the street GC grew up on.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 3:08 AM

(one to which I would immediately subscribe!)
KB

Kevin Bartini · 3:09 AM

I had mentioned to a friend one day that I had walked over to find his building and strangely enough the street wasn't nasmed after him
KB

Kevin Bartini · 3:09 AM

So we decided that I should try to get the city to rectify this.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 3:09 AM

look at you, you civic warrior!
KB

Kevin Bartini · 3:09 AM

I first stood on the corner collecting signatures on a petition.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 3:09 AM

what was the street name?
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 3:09 AM

Richard Pryor Way.
KB

Kevin Bartini · 3:10 AM

The street is West 121 Street. We are trying to get it co-named George Carlin Way.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 3:10 AM

so were people psyched to sign the petition?
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 3:10 AM

I would have been!
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 3:10 AM

Did you stand on the corner doing his material?
KB

Kevin Bartini · 3:10 AM

Some peple really were excited.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 3:10 AM

that is just crack alley, jordan
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 3:10 AM

lol
KB

Kevin Bartini · 3:11 AM

I am the last guy you would expect to see on a corner with a petition in hand. I am the guy who blows past those people like they aren;t there.
KB

Kevin Bartini · 3:11 AM

A lot of people blew past me as I was asking them to sign a petiton.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 3:11 AM

that's great! I'm happy you did this!
KB

Kevin Bartini · 3:11 AM

But what was funny was how many people stoipped in their tracks when they heard George's name and doubled back to sign.

Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 3:13 AM

no? no one feels like throwing around Carlin lines?
KB

Kevin Bartini · 3:13 AM

It has been a three yeat fight but we are almost there. Expecting a vote from the city council by the end of the year.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 3:14 AM

who in their right mind would oppose this?
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 3:14 AM

my head doesn't pull Carlin quotes out the air quite so freely
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 3:14 AM

We should have a George Carlin Saturday where we watch all of his concerts.

Nobody in their right mind would oppose this. The Catholic Church did.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 3:15 AM

fair point, Jon.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 3:15 AM

The Catholic Church. Well, at least George dinged them in "Dogma."
KB

Kevin Bartini · 3:16 AM

They the Catholic Church has a church right on the street. Corpus Christi. It is actually where George went to school.
KB

Kevin Bartini · 3:16 AM

Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 3:16 AM

Wankers.
Jordan Birnbaum

Jordan Birnbaum · 3:16 AM

OK Kev, I think we're ready to wrap it up. I hope you enjoyed it!

I did. Thanks for having me. LEt's do it again some time.
