I (Wayne) am touring a wind generator facility on March 7th, 2014. This is testing a battery storage device. We'll also be covering emerging wind power technologies like Regedyne's design. Everything wind, everyone welcome!

KM

kelly mackin · 12:30 AM

Hello everyone, glad ya made it
WD

Wayne Delorme · 12:30 AM

Welcome everyone, thanks for coming!
KM

kelly mackin · 12:30 AM

hello everyone glad ya made it
WD

Wayne Delorme · 12:30 AM

So our tour was postponed... until today! And Kelly was able to come too.
KM

kelly mackin · 12:31 AM

yes and I found out it was something that has never been done before in north america.
WD

Wayne Delorme · 12:31 AM

utility grade battery storage
KM

kelly mackin · 12:31 AM

its a wind turbine with enough battery power to be used for utilities.
KM

kelly mackin · 12:31 AM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

Hiya Wayne and Kelly and Kelly and Wayne!

WD

Wayne Delorme · 12:31 AM

I was surprised how quiet that turbine was...
KM

kelly mackin · 12:31 AM

★ Spotlighted from Rebecca Westbrook Toker

Whew! I made it!

WD

Wayne Delorme · 12:32 AM

In 2 small c-cans were 4,000+ lithium-ion cells
KM

kelly mackin · 12:32 AM

It was producing aprox 300 kw and it cost 7 mil with all the research as well, so would be cheaper next time.
KM

kelly mackin · 12:33 AM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

major utilities?

WD

Wayne Delorme · 12:33 AM

They are testing it's ability to smooth out energy, and store during peak load to deliver during peak useage
KM

kelly mackin · 12:33 AM

yes major utilities.
WD

Wayne Delorme · 12:34 AM

he said that lithium-ion was the best choice for batteries, they are tested reliable. After 15 years, they should still have about 80% of their original capacity
KM

kelly mackin · 12:34 AM

It was good, but I think, regenedyne is a better system. but the battery packs were good idea.
KM

kelly mackin · 12:35 AM

yep we are getting some right now :).
KM

kelly mackin · 12:35 AM

★ Spotlighted from Rebecca Westbrook Toker

How cool! Are htere any links for pics???

WD

Wayne Delorme · 12:35 AM

Here's a link: http://www.saskatooncommunitywind.ca/#!cowessess/c1xnx
KM

kelly mackin · 12:35 AM

the difference was the major amount of battery storage, 400 kw
KM

kelly mackin · 12:35 AM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

this must be different from how it is done in los angeles, yes?

WD

Wayne Delorme · 12:36 AM

I haven't looked into that facility Robin
KM

kelly mackin · 12:36 AM

There are some other really neat ideas wayne showed me for wind as well.
KM

kelly mackin · 12:37 AM

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L1FzkY9qzCE
KM

kelly mackin · 12:37 AM

I think if research is put into carbon nano tube tech, the battery systems could be WAY better.
WD

Wayne Delorme · 12:37 AM

Oh! and Regenedyne just came out with a new video about a week ago, we just watched it today: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6b_rWlvom4g
WD

Wayne Delorme · 12:38 AM

I'm anxiously watching what Regenedyne's doing
KM

kelly mackin · 12:38 AM

Me as well. I like vawt over hawt, vertical axis over horizontal.
WD

Wayne Delorme · 12:39 AM

There are other storage options, I asked about CAES (compressed air energy storage)
KM

kelly mackin · 12:40 AM

In places where there is a lot of wind, like Regina Saskatchewan, wind could be a very good renewable power.
WD

Wayne Delorme · 12:40 AM

It's not as efficient as battery storage, at about 80% it's not near the 97% of this lithium-ion system
WD

Wayne Delorme · 12:40 AM

but it would be cleaner... I wish we weren't restricted by the monetary system.
KM

kelly mackin · 12:42 AM

There is also using compressed air in abandon mines to store energy as well.
KM

kelly mackin · 12:42 AM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

me too. renewable energy sources needs to be backed big time.

WD

Wayne Delorme · 12:42 AM

we're willing to field some questions, and remember that there are no stupid questions
KM

kelly mackin · 12:42 AM

Wind is out there, we just need to put the effort in.
WD

Wayne Delorme · 12:43 AM

volcanoes are an awesome source of energy. iceland tapped one... they have heated sidwalks. Less than 1% of their infrastructure runs on fossil fuels.
KM

kelly mackin · 12:43 AM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

just so you don't create a volcano

WD

Wayne Delorme · 12:44 AM

There's a lot of meglev VAWT 's out there that you can buy, in various sizes. I've never tried one myself but that's what I'd be looking for
KM

kelly mackin · 12:44 AM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

go iceland! that is wonderful

WD

Wayne Delorme · 12:44 AM

meglev = magnetically levitated
WD

Wayne Delorme · 12:45 AM

which reduces friction and wearing of parts
KM

kelly mackin · 12:45 AM

LOL yep thats a good one for the right places, We should adapt renewable energy for what fits the environment it will be used in. Sunny places use solar, windy places using wind, coastal places using tidal or wave.
WD

Wayne Delorme · 12:45 AM

We're just north of Montana, in Regina Saskatchewan
KM

kelly mackin · 12:45 AM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

we get a lot of wind here too, montana, any advice on a smaller, personal wind generator that works good?

KM

kelly mackin · 12:46 AM

I saw a guy turn an old garbage can into a wind turbine.
WD

Wayne Delorme · 12:46 AM

and the snow shovel wind turbine
WD

Wayne Delorme · 12:47 AM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

in Bear River, Nova Scotia, which is on a tidal river, incoming water creats the power. some is used to pump water to a higher elevation. when the tide goes out. the falling water from above creates power the rest of the time.

WD

Wayne Delorme · 12:47 AM

I've seen that kind of tech too, there's a big one in Japan. I'll have to look up that one in Nova Scotia, I hadn't heard of that.
KM

kelly mackin · 12:48 AM

here is an example of very small scale very cheap wind power.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WSmlIYSKoMs
WD

Wayne Delorme · 12:49 AM

one of the major obstacles to this wind turbine was the soil... the cement work wat $200,000 due to our cruddy soil structure
WD

Wayne Delorme · 12:49 AM

under the cement pad they have 25 x 80 foot piles
KM

kelly mackin · 12:51 AM

I would like to see coal and natural gas become old ways and let in the new energy sources. I will try and look into what the government can offer here in canada, I don't know about the US, but I can put some effort there as well I guess.
KM

kelly mackin · 12:51 AM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

has one of those huge turbines ever fallen over? if so, what happened?

WD

Wayne Delorme · 12:51 AM

there are some videos of turbines that were in too strong of wind and the brakes fail... they pretty much explodes when the props hit the tower
KM

kelly mackin · 12:52 AM

On the big hawt systems, birds get killed, they start on fire, it still has some kinks to work out.
WD

Wayne Delorme · 12:52 AM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

the world need to phase the "old ways" out. esp nuclear, my prime nemesis.

WD

Wayne Delorme · 12:52 AM

I could'nt agree with you more
KM

kelly mackin · 12:52 AM

the last thing we need is another fukishima.
WD

Wayne Delorme · 12:53 AM

I work for the power company here, and the majority of our energy is coal, with a hefty side serving of natural gas/fracking. I'm trying to get people talking about renewables. We do have a number of wind projects here in Saskatchewan, but need more
WD

Wayne Delorme · 12:53 AM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

well, we may have one. WIPP in carlsbad new mexico

KM

kelly mackin · 12:53 AM

And GE would not build a nuc plant unless the government must sign off liability to them.
WD

Wayne Delorme · 12:54 AM

what's that about WIPP? never heard of it
KM

kelly mackin · 12:54 AM

★ Spotlighted from Rebecca Westbrook Toker

Or Chernobyl. or Arizona. Or Depleted-Uranium-tipped missles. Or who-knows-how-many incidents they haven't told us about???

WD

Wayne Delorme · 12:54 AM

yeah, isn't that nice how they're spreading nuclear waste all over with uranium ammo?
WD

Wayne Delorme · 12:55 AM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

it is a nuclear waste repository. had an accident on the 14th

WD

Wayne Delorme · 12:55 AM

oh that sounds fun.
KM

kelly mackin · 12:55 AM

Ya I just could not spell chernobyl hehehe, arizona?
WD

Wayne Delorme · 12:55 AM

I hope that this acceleration in "incidents" also accelerates the change in the culture that we need.
KM

kelly mackin · 12:55 AM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

no one "know" exactly what happened or continues to happen. they realease alittle info at a time.

KM

kelly mackin · 12:56 AM

Thats how they worked the fukishima disaster as well.
KM

kelly mackin · 12:57 AM

And thats why we are here, we KNOW we need to get away from those types of energy sources, OR do it ALOT better.
WD

Wayne Delorme · 12:57 AM

i'll be looking that up later tonight
KM

kelly mackin · 12:57 AM

Nice, getting some good info here. more researching to do :).
KM

kelly mackin · 12:57 AM

★ Spotlighted from Rebecca Westbrook Toker

Oh, yeah, Robin, i had totally forgotten about that (Carlsbad). It's so surreal!

WD

Wayne Delorme · 12:58 AM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

i am happy people like you two are working on that.. to provide a better future than we would otherwise have.

KM

kelly mackin · 12:58 AM

On a off topic note, what are readers on tawkers? anyone know?
WD

Wayne Delorme · 12:58 AM

LOL... don't know how much influence we'll have. as much as I'm trying to spread the word of renewables at my company, I'm just a Telecommunications Analyst! I have nothing to do with the actual power production.
KM

kelly mackin · 12:58 AM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

kelly, i will fill your eyes up when you are ready. = D

KM

kelly mackin · 12:59 AM

LOL after rebeccas tawk small is beautiful. right after this one 7:30 pm central :).
KM

kelly mackin · 12:59 AM

★ Spotlighted from Rebecca Westbrook Toker

Oh, pardon me, i meant Nevada - they were doing nuclear testing there. I thought it was Arizona. Sorry.

KM

kelly mackin · 12:59 AM

AHH yes that i did know :).
WD

Wayne Delorme · 12:59 AM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

spreading the word, and there are so many words to spread, is a great and necessary beginning.

WD

Wayne Delorme · 1:00 AM

our biggest obstacle right now is awareness.
KM

kelly mackin · 1:00 AM

VENUS PROJECT :).
WD

Wayne Delorme · 1:00 AM

Go TVP!!
WD

Wayne Delorme · 1:00 AM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

Texturized Vegetable Protein?

WD

Wayne Delorme · 1:01 AM

Why yes Robin, and much more!
WD

Wayne Delorme · 1:01 AM

LOL
KM

kelly mackin · 1:01 AM

Wind is there for the places we can really get use from it, like chili, 40 mil an hour winds quite often, WOW.
WD

Wayne Delorme · 1:01 AM

The Venus Project... if you haven't heard of it, you should really go to www.thevenusproject.com
KM

kelly mackin · 1:02 AM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

it always makes me laugh when weather reports "high" winds of 25 MPH.

KM

kelly mackin · 1:02 AM

Thats pure power we could tap, prolly get 300 kw for one turbine from that.
KM

kelly mackin · 1:03 AM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

the venus project looks quite idyllic. is it a real possibility?

WD

Wayne Delorme · 1:03 AM

Here's another guy's take on wind energy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P55HfnGR6kQ
KM

kelly mackin · 1:04 AM

Jaque says if we had control over the mass media, and really put effort into it, it would take ten years to REALLY see the results. How can we know if hes right if we dont try.
WD

Wayne Delorme · 1:04 AM

Robin, it has to be... or some variation of it. At some point, we have to realize that this system is not only ignoring the needy, but destroying the environment. There is no profit in cleaning things up.
WD

Wayne Delorme · 1:04 AM

Money is obsolete.
WD

Wayne Delorme · 1:05 AM

this system is also destroying itself... through automation
WD

Wayne Delorme · 1:06 AM

automation = cheaper production, which leads to job losses, which means less people have buying power to purchase the products made through automation
WD

Wayne Delorme · 1:06 AM

and soon we'll be 3d printing stuff in our homes
WD

Wayne Delorme · 1:07 AM

Kelly owns a 3D printer, the tech is new... once we're able to 3D print multiple materials in a single print, it's game over for corps that sell things.. that can be printed.
WD

Wayne Delorme · 1:07 AM

almost any material you can think of
WD

Wayne Delorme · 1:07 AM

plastics, ceramics, metals - even titanium... and food!
WD

Wayne Delorme · 1:07 AM

even organs are starting to be 3D printed
WD

Wayne Delorme · 1:08 AM

i mean... parts of people. not the musical kind. lol
KM

kelly mackin · 1:08 AM

AHHH lagged out
WD

Wayne Delorme · 1:08 AM

i don't think they're ready to start 3d printing a heart and putting into a person... but they're working on it
KM

kelly mackin · 1:08 AM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

what is the material made of for 3-d printers?

KM

kelly mackin · 1:09 AM

pla plastic Is what mine uses.
WD

Wayne Delorme · 1:09 AM

yes, a bio-degradeable plastic, made from corn
WD

Wayne Delorme · 1:10 AM

PLA is an acronym... i forget what it stands for
KM

kelly mackin · 1:11 AM

ok, for the DIY person who wants winds power. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qWYwpPaMW2o
WD

Wayne Delorme · 1:11 AM

it's not as heat tolerant as regular plastic tho. but good for prototyping... and not using oil!
KM

kelly mackin · 1:11 AM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

how clever! those humans, they are indomitable!

WD

Wayne Delorme · 1:11 AM

★ Spotlighted from Seth Westbrook Toker

ooohhh DIY wind. cool

KM

kelly mackin · 1:11 AM

I;m a human, I think :).
WD

Wayne Delorme · 1:11 AM

I love watching DIY wind projects
WD

Wayne Delorme · 1:12 AM

starting to get into hydro too. I just have a general interest in renewables i guess
KM

kelly mackin · 1:12 AM

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0BE5cuap2AQ
WD

Wayne Delorme · 1:12 AM

i've done the most research in wind because we're at the top of tornado alley.
KM

kelly mackin · 1:12 AM

★ Spotlighted from Seth Westbrook Toker

i heard an engineer comment that wind is a thermodynamic joke at the heights we can reach, care to comment? because i wasnt sure what he ment.

WD

Wayne Delorme · 1:13 AM

wind power is much stronger the higher to go
WD

Wayne Delorme · 1:13 AM

we're starting to make turbine that float on a thether
WD

Wayne Delorme · 1:13 AM

I don't really like that as much because it's cluttering up the skies
WD

Wayne Delorme · 1:14 AM

get planes flying into the tethers, etc
KM

kelly mackin · 1:14 AM

Well, we would have to see, so many so called scientists out there who crunch the #'s but they miss things all the time. One guy was trying to build a car faster then the wind, powered by the wind. engineers said it could not be done. well, he did it
WD

Wayne Delorme · 1:14 AM

★ Spotlighted from Seth Westbrook Toker

yea, its better than dying though...

WD

Wayne Delorme · 1:14 AM

true that.
WD

Wayne Delorme · 1:14 AM

I think maglev VAWTS are the way to go
WD

Wayne Delorme · 1:14 AM

but i'll take a tethered turbine over coal any day.
KM

kelly mackin · 1:15 AM

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F7PNSyAfCjk wind powered vehicle. check it our.
KM

kelly mackin · 1:15 AM

★ Spotlighted from Seth Westbrook Toker

what guy with what wind car????

KM

kelly mackin · 1:15 AM

its got a big wind turbine.
KM

kelly mackin · 1:16 AM

LOL rude would be our choice to take it that way, I don't mind someone asking tough questions. its how we grow if we let ourselves.
KM

kelly mackin · 1:16 AM

I love ya all.
WD

Wayne Delorme · 1:16 AM

Another interesting thing I've learned lately is how eddy's affect a wind turbine, and the proper shroud on a turbine can really increase it's output
KM

kelly mackin · 1:16 AM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

i don't mind being rude. WE NEED INFORMATION! = D

KM

kelly mackin · 1:16 AM

★ Spotlighted from Seth Westbrook Toker

i totally will. i want to watch all these but i didnt want to be rude

WD

Wayne Delorme · 1:16 AM

well said Robin.
WD

Wayne Delorme · 1:17 AM

I think a little politely can be easily outweighed by the pursuit of knowledge.
WD

Wayne Delorme · 1:17 AM

politeness*
KM

kelly mackin · 1:17 AM

The wind powered car was on daily planet before, thats where the person said, many engineers told him it could not be done.
KM

kelly mackin · 1:18 AM

★ Spotlighted from Seth Westbrook Toker

so do you guys think a small wind turbine is better for an off the grid house than solar? i feel like wind is mostly suited to large scale

KM

kelly mackin · 1:18 AM

I agree with you seth. It does depend on location though. if your in a rainy place, maybe wind is better, or something else.
WD

Wayne Delorme · 1:18 AM

solar is a lot easier to work with really, but i don't know if it will produce more for dollars spent. I haven't done the math
KM

kelly mackin · 1:18 AM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

and we love you Kelly! thanks for this informative tawk, you and Wayne.

WD

Wayne Delorme · 1:18 AM

and yes,, location is everything
KM

kelly mackin · 1:19 AM

love you too robin.
KM

kelly mackin · 1:19 AM

★ Spotlighted from Seth Westbrook Toker

yea, my regards dovetail into robins, sorry i was late.

KM

kelly mackin · 1:19 AM

your here and thats what matters.
KM

kelly mackin · 1:19 AM

★ Spotlighted from Seth Westbrook Toker

for sure, location is meaningful

WD

Wayne Delorme · 1:19 AM

wind is really finnicky, but solar is more forgiving.. just need line of sight with the sun.
WD

Wayne Delorme · 1:20 AM

being near trees or rough land is bad for wind... lucking, we live in Saskatchewan! where you can watch your dog run away for 3 days!!!
KM

kelly mackin · 1:20 AM

solar for sunny places, wind for windy, tidal or wave for coastal, and who knows, IF they free zero point technology, it goes anywhere.
WD

Wayne Delorme · 1:20 AM

★ Spotlighted from Seth Westbrook Toker

i read the other day that panels facing west did better than common knowledge facing south panels. it was really interesting

WD

Wayne Delorme · 1:21 AM

interesting
KM

kelly mackin · 1:21 AM

I don't know, usually, they test it with a devise before they put up the panels.
KM

kelly mackin · 1:21 AM

they make sure to get the most out of it.
WD

Wayne Delorme · 1:22 AM

have you looked into solar being used to power a stirling or steam engine? Love it.
WD

Wayne Delorme · 1:23 AM

not sure what a solar stat device is... but using a parabolic mirror to focus the light onto an external combustion engine
WD

Wayne Delorme · 1:23 AM

★ Spotlighted from Seth Westbrook Toker

making steam with concentrated light?

WD

Wayne Delorme · 1:23 AM

in the case of steam, yes
WD

Wayne Delorme · 1:23 AM

but stirling is also a very interesting tech
KM

kelly mackin · 1:24 AM

★ Spotlighted from Seth Westbrook Toker

ive never understood how they work, other than they use heat without pressure

WD

Wayne Delorme · 1:24 AM

Stirling engine: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H_Vnxapd5fs in a truck.
KM

kelly mackin · 1:24 AM

its about the hot and cold areas and the air displacement.
WD

Wayne Delorme · 1:24 AM

we're coming too lol
KM

kelly mackin · 1:24 AM

★ Spotlighted from Seth Westbrook Toker

my tawk is about to start

WD

Wayne Delorme · 1:24 AM

we'll see you there! thanks for coming!
KM

kelly mackin · 1:25 AM

OK were are coming too. small is beautiful. should be good.
WD

Wayne Delorme · 1:25 AM

we've got about 5 mins left, does anyone have questions about wind power?
KM

kelly mackin · 1:25 AM

★ Spotlighted from Rebecca Westbrook Toker

You guys are wonderful - thanks so much for doing the research and then debriefing the rest of us. That's pretty awesome!

WD

Wayne Delorme · 1:25 AM

you're very welcome!
KM

kelly mackin · 1:25 AM

No problem, I found my gift, now i want to share it with the world.
KM

kelly mackin · 1:26 AM

I have the gift of gab LOL.
KM

kelly mackin · 1:26 AM

★ Spotlighted from Rebecca Westbrook Toker

And, yes, thanks for the links. I'm working my way through Venus project - Jaques Fresco was featured in Zeitgeist: Moving Forward!

WD

Wayne Delorme · 1:26 AM

That's how I found out about him too
KM

kelly mackin · 1:26 AM

YES, yes he was. VENUS PROJECT :).
WD

Wayne Delorme · 1:26 AM

Go TVP!!
WD

Wayne Delorme · 1:26 AM

=)
WD

Wayne Delorme · 1:27 AM

not vegetable protein... LOL
KM

kelly mackin · 1:27 AM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

the stirling engine can use nuclear power? sounds a little crazy.

KM

kelly mackin · 1:27 AM

WHAT, really?
WD

Wayne Delorme · 1:27 AM

stirling can use any heat source
KM

kelly mackin · 1:27 AM

that would be a crazy one.
WD

Wayne Delorme · 1:27 AM

i don't vote for nuclear. lol
WD

Wayne Delorme · 1:28 AM

I prefer sun, or bio diesel
KM

kelly mackin · 1:28 AM

I think we can stay away from smashing atoms, putting them together, different story, but that will be another tawk :).
KM

kelly mackin · 1:28 AM

fission vs fusion.
KM

kelly mackin · 1:28 AM

LOL i have my choice :).
KM

kelly mackin · 1:28 AM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

ahh

KM

kelly mackin · 1:29 AM

★ Spotlighted from Robin Maynard

collider?

KM

kelly mackin · 1:29 AM

Yes, its how the sun works, its creation vs destruction.
KM

kelly mackin · 1:29 AM

Thank everyone for showing up.
WD

Wayne Delorme · 1:30 AM

Last minute thanks to everyone for coming! we were thinking of doing a Tawk on the Venus Project, hope you all come!

you too. have a good evening

KM

kelly mackin · 1:31 AM

LOL its past 7:30
KM

kelly mackin · 1:32 AM

never ending tawk?
WD

Wayne Delorme · 1:32 AM

we're heading over to Rebecca's Tawk. Take care!
KM

kelly mackin · 1:32 AM

LOL yes I need some small is beautiful.
