What a lovely nose you have, my dear! Ms. Wolfgram & Ms. Finnell are at it again, along with their legions of fellow winos, this time exploring the delightful nuances of wine as it graces the nose and palate. In our first-ever "live" group tasting, we'll be sampling Greystone Cellars Chard & Root 1 Cab Sauv, both of which can be purchased at wine.com, though you may find them in your local watering hole, as well. Either way, pour yourself a glass - well, two...nnHere's to life!

JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:00 AM

Ta-dahhh! We're back! Welcome fellow winos?
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:01 AM

That wasn't meant to be a question. Well, I'm off to a good start. lol
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:01 AM

Is Ms. Molly in the house?
MW

Molly Wolfgram · 2:01 AM

Greetings my lovely winos!
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:02 AM

Yay!!! Now it's a party!
MW

Molly Wolfgram · 2:02 AM

We're snowed in here in the deep south...I am SOOOO ready for tonight!
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:02 AM

Alright, shall we dive right in? This is one of the only times in your life where you can have two glasses of wine in front of you and not be judged...
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:03 AM

And, yes...Molly is TOTALLY ready for double-fisting.
MW

Molly Wolfgram · 2:03 AM

Hahahahaha! I'm never not ready!
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:04 AM

Okay, gang...I after-the-fact (via FB) suggested some wines for tasting (red vs. white) this evening. Who's got them?
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:04 AM

★ Spotlighted from Jordan Birnbaum

What wine pairs best with climate change?

MW

Molly Wolfgram · 2:04 AM

@Jordan...the answer is ALL wines.
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:04 AM

LOL Jordan - all of them.
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:05 AM

★ Spotlighted from Rachel McDonnell

I didn't get the prescribed wine, but I do have some wine tonight.. so I half pass, half fail the assignment. last week I went without :)

JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:06 AM

it's okay, Rachel. I dropped the ball on my own suggestion w/ the Greystone, so I was just planning to comment inappropriately & let you all wonder what the heck I was talking about. I do have the Root 1, though...anybody else?
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:07 AM

Otherwise, we'll "taste" more generally this evening.
MW

Molly Wolfgram · 2:07 AM

Dumb Georgia regs won't permit the Greystone to be shipped here.
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:08 AM

Alrighty then, moving on...I am operating under the assumption that we all have some vino in hand, though. lol
MW

Molly Wolfgram · 2:08 AM

Very safe assumption. Role call on wines!! Whatcha got?
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:09 AM

And you should all start drinking it! You're so quiet! :)
MW

Molly Wolfgram · 2:09 AM

★ Spotlighted from Rachel McDonnell

Nativa - Cabernet Sauvignon Organic Red Wine :)

JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:09 AM

When I couldn't get the Greystone, I went to one of my fav el-cheapo fallbacks, Mirassou chardonnay. It's like sunshine in a glass! And yes...by the time we are done here you will all consider that an "official" descriptor. lol
MW

Molly Wolfgram · 2:10 AM

Sounds interesting...do tell...
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:11 AM

Let's go back for a minute...whatever wine you're drinking, it's about more than just delightfully fermented grapes. Wine can (and should) be a total sensory experience.
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:11 AM

★ Spotlighted from Rachel McDonnell

I've never tried Chardonnay

JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:11 AM

Rachel. Tsk-tsk. Don't worry...we'll fix that! :)
MW

Molly Wolfgram · 2:12 AM

I love Chardonnay...especially in the spring and summer.
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:12 AM

So, wine "snobbery" aside, all the sniffing and the swishing...there really is a point to it all. Not so much the gargling...
MW

Molly Wolfgram · 2:13 AM

Why the gargling? Is it the tightness of the turtlenecks?
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:13 AM

Me too, Molly. With ice cubes. In a red solo cup. That's how we do it in the trailer park. And it's very important to me that you know I'm just kidding right now.
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:13 AM

★ Spotlighted from Pam Wolfe

Unfortunately, I didn't think I'd be here tonight so I'm wineless. :(

JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:13 AM

Pam - whaaaatttt! Come over!
MW

Molly Wolfgram · 2:14 AM

★ Spotlighted from Jordan Birnbaum

So what are you looking for when you swirl your wine?

JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:14 AM

Jordan, the swirling - though it is most definitely a pleasing aspect to the eye - is really more for aerating. Letting the wine "breathe".
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:15 AM

Tonight we're going to talk "bouquet" or "nose", and palate.
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:15 AM

So, e!verybody, raise your glass and SNIFF!
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:15 AM

★ Spotlighted from Sean Donaghy

Chardonnay in a martini glass tonight

JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:15 AM

Nice, Sean. Too prone to spilling for me, but I totally respect it.
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:16 AM

And...Steve is sniffing his beer right now.
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:16 AM

★ Spotlighted from Rachel McDonnell

@Jordan - I search for the meaning of life when I swirl my wine hahah ;)

JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:16 AM

Rachel, I have found meaning in a good wine swish. lol. But ESPECIALLY in a good wine SMELL.
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:16 AM

★ Spotlighted from Rachel McDonnell

haha! what are we supposed to smell?

MW

Molly Wolfgram · 2:17 AM

Alrighty Jen...let's talk bouquet...I assuming we're not talking about the kind that I dodge at all wedding receptions.
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:18 AM

Well, Rae...just smell. Wine is more than grapes. It's flavored by the earth those grapes are grown in. Plus some other stuff. The differences are subtle. Enigmatic.
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:18 AM

@Molly, HAHAHAHAAAA! No, not that kind.
MW

Molly Wolfgram · 2:18 AM

Technically, bouquet is supposed to refer to the complexities of an older wine...not younger ones.
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:19 AM

I think that
MW

Molly Wolfgram · 2:19 AM

Unfortunately, I can never let a bottle sit long enough to get old, so...
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:19 AM

's where the simpler term "nose" comes in. They all have their olfactory nuances. And that's a powerful sense.
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:19 AM

★ Spotlighted from Rachel McDonnell

yep I think I smell dirt :)

JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:20 AM

Rachel - that's not uncommon. lol. does that gross you out or bring back some cool old memory?
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:20 AM

With whites, you're likely to smell flowers or citrus - maybe a mineral quality.
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:20 AM

★ Spotlighted from Steve Hoffman

yep, that's what organic wine will do for you

JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:21 AM

Lol @ Steve. Yes, Rachel's drinking dirty wine!
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:21 AM

★ Spotlighted from Jordan Birnbaum

I think I smell the hopes and dreams of the vineyard workers...

MW

Molly Wolfgram · 2:21 AM

DYING, Jordan...dying.
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:21 AM

@Jordan, at least in modern times it's not the smell of the grape-stompers' feet!
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:22 AM

★ Spotlighted from Rachel McDonnell

haha it's earthy...

JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:23 AM

With a red, you're more likely to smell rich fruits, berries - "ripeness". Pepper, spice - more boldness. In either, I do appreciate the scent of Oak.
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:23 AM

★ Spotlighted from Rachel McDonnell

@Jordan they just don't spray the grapes with pesticides or add sulfates to add to the shelf life of the wine

MW

Molly Wolfgram · 2:23 AM

The Root 1 is pretty earthy.
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:23 AM

Thanks, Rachel. Does anyone detect a hint of pesticide in their non-organic wine?
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:24 AM

I agree, Moll...hence the name. lol
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:24 AM

★ Spotlighted from Jordan Birnbaum

I quit about a year ago, Rach. You will not believe what happens to your senses of taste and smell.

JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:24 AM

★ Spotlighted from Rachel McDonnell

In may it will be 2 years since I quit! we rock :)

MW

Molly Wolfgram · 2:24 AM

::facepalm::
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:24 AM

Ex-smokers - you rock! Now smell your wine! :)
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:25 AM

★ Spotlighted from Rachel McDonnell

yes now I can smell subtle berry / sweet smell

MW

Molly Wolfgram · 2:25 AM

Hint of licorice perhaps?
MW

Molly Wolfgram · 2:25 AM

★ Spotlighted from Jordan Birnbaum

Smells like...victory.

JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:25 AM

See, Rach? Didn't your wine just get more interesting? It's kind of along the lines of the "living in the moment" principle.
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:26 AM

When I get my hands on a good Nero d'Avolo, I have a hard time getting around to the actual drinking of the wine. I become that weird girl at the restaruant (or wherever) that just buries her face in the glass. It's absolutely sensuous.
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:27 AM

metallic - that's the mineral quality. From the ground in which the grapes were grown.
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:27 AM

★ Spotlighted from Rachel McDonnell

yes it's cool and weird. it does change, not I smell a little more like metalic taste

JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:27 AM

★ Spotlighted from Rachel McDonnell

mm makes it taste better too! :)

JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:28 AM

Yes...and that's why aroma is so important - it preps your taste buds!
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:29 AM

And gets you in the mode of paying attention to the nuances, so you're more receptive to detecting the subtle nuances of flavor.
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:29 AM

And here's where I shut up for a minute so Molly can talk too! ;)
MW

Molly Wolfgram · 2:29 AM

Sheesh!
MW

Molly Wolfgram · 2:29 AM

But, you're absolutely right.
MW

Molly Wolfgram · 2:30 AM

Taking a few moments to really get a good read on the aromas will affect how you taste the wine.
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:30 AM

★ Spotlighted from Sean Donaghy

ok swapped to a legitimate wine glass, am I nuts or am I tasting a buttery flavor? - Chardonnay

JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:30 AM

Butter is a very common flavor profile in Chard, Sean.
MW

Molly Wolfgram · 2:31 AM

Hmmm, love a buttery Chardonnay
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:31 AM

But they can also be quite citrus-y.
MW

Molly Wolfgram · 2:31 AM

So everyone take a moment to get a good sniff of your wine.
MW

Molly Wolfgram · 2:31 AM

Like an awkward, face stuck in the glass kind of sniff...
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:31 AM

Except for Steve - who's sniffing his Miller Lite.
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:32 AM

Oh! I have a visual! Fabulous!
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:32 AM

★ Spotlighted from Rachel McDonnell

I feel like I'm trying to get high off of wine lol!

MW

Molly Wolfgram · 2:32 AM

And see if that changes what you taste.
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:32 AM

★ Spotlighted from Rachel McDonnell

I smell something rich but I don't know what it is

JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:33 AM

@ Rachel - now TASTE it, and see if you can figure it out.
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:33 AM

★ Spotlighted from Rachel McDonnell

I don't know if I'd sniff Miller Steve, careful on that stuff! lol ;)

MW

Molly Wolfgram · 2:33 AM

There really is no wrong answer.
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:33 AM

Are you guys learning anything here? lol. Shall we advance to palate?
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:34 AM

★ Spotlighted from Rachel McDonnell

all I am visualizing is trees or bark or something

JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:34 AM

Rachel has achieved wine epiphany!
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:34 AM

★ Spotlighted from Sean Donaghy

a quick one before we move on, what does it mean when it says Reserve ?

JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:35 AM

@Sean, that's usually a smaller batch of a "special" wine made from a particular harvest - though I think the word itself has become a little commercialized.
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:36 AM

Like, we made our regular Merlot, and then we made just a tiny bit of this really fabulous one.
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:36 AM

★ Spotlighted from Rachel McDonnell

yeah mine says that too, my wine was made in chile apparently cool

JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:36 AM

@Rachel, Chilean wines are brilliant! And largely undiscovered, so still totally affordable.
MW

Molly Wolfgram · 2:37 AM

Good thing it's organic, @Rachel! Chile has nasty pesticides...or not...I actually have no idea.
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:38 AM

If Wolfgram said it, it must be true!
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:38 AM

★ Spotlighted from Rachel McDonnell

HAHA! :D

MW

Molly Wolfgram · 2:38 AM

Yes. I'm glad we agree on that :)
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:39 AM

Okay, so moving on to tasting then (like you all haven't been tossing it back this whole time)...
MW

Molly Wolfgram · 2:39 AM

Uh...I've been snowed in all day...it's more like guzzling.
MW

Molly Wolfgram · 2:40 AM

I can't do this properly all of the time, dammit.
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:40 AM

A true snob will spend 20 minutes evaluating the first couple sips. We're not that guy. BUT, the whole experience DOES become more enjoyable when you learn to pick out the subtleties.
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:40 AM

Lol! Molly - you're good! :)
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:40 AM

★ Spotlighted from Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle

Hello everyone!!

MW

Molly Wolfgram · 2:40 AM

Omigawd!! JD!
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:41 AM

Arbuckle's here! You can evaluate your beer by the same standards we are discussing. :)
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:41 AM

★ Spotlighted from Rachel McDonnell

now I smell flowers, is it our nose that picks up a different smell everytime or is it just the longer the wine breathes the different it smells/tastes?

JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:41 AM

@Rachel - it's both sometimes. There are a lot of different elements to take in, so you can't pick them out all at once.
MW

Molly Wolfgram · 2:42 AM

And the longer the wine breathes the more different aromas will come to the forefront.
MW

Molly Wolfgram · 2:42 AM

★ Spotlighted from Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle

As long as you're not smelling burnt toast Rachel, it's okay!!

JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:42 AM

So, winos, when you sip your wine do you just think, "hey, that's pretty tasty!" (or not), or do you take the time to pick out all the flavors?
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:43 AM

★ Spotlighted from Sean Donaghy

I think I'm tasting peaches, subtle but something sweet

MW

Molly Wolfgram · 2:43 AM

It depends on what I'm drinking and how long I sat in traffic on the way home.
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:43 AM

@ sean, I don't know what you're drinking, but also very likely with a chard.
MW

Molly Wolfgram · 2:43 AM

If it's a wine I've had frequently, I'm less likely to take the time.
MW

Molly Wolfgram · 2:44 AM

But a new kind of wine always deserves a little extra special attention.
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:44 AM

Exactly, Molly! That's why we approve box wine for everyday occasions. But the "good" stuff should usually be savored. lol
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:44 AM

★ Spotlighted from Rachel McDonnell

I normally just think tasty and alcohol.. but now I am starting to enjoy the experience more! :)

JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:44 AM

@Rachel, you are truly one of us!
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:45 AM

★ Spotlighted from Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle

My mother is the box wine queen,...she'll tell you, it's not as bad as it has been in the past.

MW

Molly Wolfgram · 2:45 AM

This is so true!
MW

Molly Wolfgram · 2:45 AM

The more homework your middle schooler has the more wine you need.
MW

Molly Wolfgram · 2:45 AM

Bota Box is a personal fav.
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:46 AM

That's actually true, Arbuckle. As a matter of fact, the "boxing" trend is also very effective in preserving the wine, as well as a much more environmentally friendly method of packaging.
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:46 AM

Right on, Molly! That's my favorite, too!
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:46 AM

★ Spotlighted from Steve Hoffman

"we will sell no box before its time"

JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:46 AM

Lol, Steve...
MW

Molly Wolfgram · 2:47 AM

★ Spotlighted from Rachel McDonnell

so are newer wines "stronger" tasting? Or does it just depend on the kind of wine?

JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:47 AM

@Rae, totally depends on the wine itself.
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:47 AM

★ Spotlighted from Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle

Good to the earth and drinking too...life is good!!

JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:47 AM

@Arbuckle, that's good clean livin' right there!
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:48 AM

Do you guys actually wanna talk palate real quick? Or should we just save that for next week? It's kind of it's own topic...
MW

Molly Wolfgram · 2:48 AM

Let's save it.
MW

Molly Wolfgram · 2:48 AM

A lot to cover, like you said.
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:48 AM

Agreed.
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:49 AM

★ Spotlighted from Sean Donaghy

so if a BOTA box is 4 bottles, and this may be the dumb part with this group, do you just put whatevers left back in the fridge ?

JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:49 AM

@Sean, you can keep it in the fridge...or not. Doesn't matter.
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:50 AM

For white, you might want to, just to keep it chilled, but it won't spoil or change it's taste.
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:50 AM

★ Spotlighted from Rachel McDonnell

I always thought it was commonplace to store whites in the fridge and reds out in the warm air, is that correct? or does it depend? cold reds just don't taste as good to me

MW

Molly Wolfgram · 2:51 AM

Sean, definitely put a boxed white in the fridge.
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:51 AM

@Rae, I've come across a couple of reds that are meant to be chilled (one's called Wildflower!), but generally reds are not kept in the fridge.
MW

Molly Wolfgram · 2:51 AM

I'm with you Rachel, can't do a cold red.
MW

Molly Wolfgram · 2:51 AM

Though I have been known to be to impatient to properly chill a white too.
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:51 AM

★ Spotlighted from Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle

If I were to create a wonderful meal of pasta, ravioli let's say with a red sauce...what is the suggestion you ladies would make for a complimentary wine?

JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:51 AM

@Jenn - how spicy is the sauce?
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:52 AM

...and what's the ravioli stuffed with?
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:52 AM

★ Spotlighted from Tim Allen

Another trick but, I am thinking this is not a problem for this group. An open bottle of red can go in fridge to slow the process of it going bad.

JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:52 AM

@Tim - I wish I could advise on that, but "leftover" wine is not something I am familiar with. ;)
MW

Molly Wolfgram · 2:53 AM

Hahaha! Was going to say the same thing.
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:53 AM

★ Spotlighted from Rachel McDonnell

you know what they need? a decanter with like a net covering to keep out fruit flies in the summer! arg! so annoying!

MW

Molly Wolfgram · 2:53 AM

But, Tim...you're right.
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:53 AM

Ummm...put the cork back in?
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:53 AM

★ Spotlighted from Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle

Tim Allen???? I would have thought you a beer man. THE Tim Allen?

JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:53 AM

★ Spotlighted from Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle

Put the cork back in ....that's what she said!!

JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:54 AM

And....there's the wayward conversation I was expecting. lol
MW

Molly Wolfgram · 2:54 AM

Tim is quite the connoisseur of wine...and beer, come to think of it.
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:54 AM

Hey, gang, we're almost out of time! How does this always go so fast???
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:55 AM

But first, we want to give you next week's wine. You can get it at your local store - and it's one of my favorite cheap-o go-to's...
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:55 AM

★ Spotlighted from Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle

What kind of wine do I need for my ravioli???

JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:55 AM

Shiraz - peppery - yum!
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:56 AM

Rex Goliath Free Range Red. Grab a bottle for next week. You will recognize the bottle by the gigantic cock on the label.
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:56 AM

And by "gigantic cock", I mean a rooster. :)
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:56 AM

★ Spotlighted from Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle

Did you just put a spell on me or is that a wine?

JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:57 AM

★ Spotlighted from Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle

Sure you do Jenn....sure you do

JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:57 AM

No surprise, that's how I stumbled across this one in the first place. I mean...come on! ;ol
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:57 AM

★ Spotlighted from Rachel McDonnell

lol.. you waited all tawk to unleash that one didn't you Jenn ;) haha

MW

Molly Wolfgram · 2:57 AM

I'd be lying if I said that wasn't the reason I first bought it!
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:58 AM

Okay, then, so...next Wed. we all have the same wine (snicker), and we're talking flavor profiles. Cool?
MW

Molly Wolfgram · 2:58 AM

Also, it never gets old, asking someone to pick it up from the store for you. "You know the one..with the big cock on the side?"
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:58 AM

★ Spotlighted from Rachel McDonnell

haha! well at least you're honest ;)

JF

Jennifer Finnell · 2:59 AM

Lol Molly! Gonna have to try that! Better than asking a guy to buy tampons1
MW

Molly Wolfgram · 2:59 AM

Good thing my mom's not on with us tonight.
MW

Molly Wolfgram · 2:59 AM

★ Spotlighted from Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle

Well, I'm glad I made these last few minutes...didn't know it was gonna be a dirty tawk!!

JF

Jennifer Finnell · 3:00 AM

★ Spotlighted from Rachel McDonnell

lol! thanks ladies! this was fun! :D

JF

Jennifer Finnell · 3:00 AM

★ Spotlighted from Sean Donaghy

this was great, thanks, I'll finally learn to appreciate the reds, maybe

MW

Molly Wolfgram · 3:00 AM

I always end up in the gutter.
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 3:00 AM

Ladies and gents, thank you for yet another exhilarating evening! You're quickly becoming my favorite drinking buddies! See you next week!
MW

Molly Wolfgram · 3:00 AM

Nighty, night y'all!
