How much does the growing region affect the flavor profile of a wine? To illustrate, the Winos will be comparing a NZ Sauvignon Blanc to a CA varietal. So grab TWO bottles of vino and join us for an in-depth discussion on terroir and other regional variations. Here's to life!

JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:00 AM

TGIWW!!!
MW

Molly Wolfgram · 1:01 AM

Heeeellllloooooooo Winos!
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:01 AM

Hey! Is this thing on???
MW

Molly Wolfgram · 1:01 AM

It's being a little sketch, I think.
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:02 AM

Ahhhh....Miss Wolfgram! So nice to "see" you!
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:02 AM

Perhaps the system also has a glass of wine in each hand...
MW

Molly Wolfgram · 1:02 AM

Hahaha, would definitely be appropriate!
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:02 AM

Ahh...there we are! Welcome, Sean!
MW

Molly Wolfgram · 1:02 AM

Hey, hey Sean!
MW

Molly Wolfgram · 1:03 AM

How was the Emerald Isle?
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:03 AM

Did you catch a leprechaun? Cuz I have questions...
MW

Molly Wolfgram · 1:04 AM

And did you drink green beer in Ireland or is that just something we do here?
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:04 AM

Could we please hear a little "hello" from you Tawkers, tonight? Seems like there's a little something "off" & we want to be sure we're hearing you. Thanks!
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:05 AM

I always wonder if leprechauns have a special day where they get drunk and celebrate us.
MW

Molly Wolfgram · 1:05 AM

★ Spotlighted from Sean Donaghy

No on the green beer, yes on lots of Guiness

JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:05 AM

Mmmmm...Guiness...
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:06 AM

Okay, so this fabulous Wine Wednesday, we'll be two-fisting (as only super-classy winos really do...)

★ Spotlighted from Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle

Hello hello hello ladies!!

JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:07 AM

The plan is to compare similar varietals from different regions, specifically NZ & CA. What's everyone indulging in this evening?

Jennifer Finnell · 1:07 AM

Hellllllooooooo, JD!

JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:07 AM

Okay, hot man's here, so the system is obviously working... (Hi, Steve! ;) )
MW

Molly Wolfgram · 1:08 AM

Ha! Yes!!
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:08 AM

You know, that fiance of mine gave me a slightly strange look when I sat down at my computer with two bottles of wine. Though, I must admit, it wasn't any stranger than usual...
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:09 AM

★ Spotlighted from Sean Donaghy

I am having the second bottle of Chilean SB Yali Wetlands

MW

Molly Wolfgram · 1:09 AM

Also, since Sean is being quiet on the subject, I will just tell you all that he went to the Dixie Chicks concert in Dublin.
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:09 AM

I have a Sonoma, which I chose because of the description from the vintner: "vin de garage"
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:10 AM

Really??? Do the Dixie Chicks River Dance when they perform over there?
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:10 AM

And a Marlborough.
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:10 AM

★ Spotlighted from Sean Donaghy

Freakin Awesome show along with Zac Brown,

MW

Molly Wolfgram · 1:11 AM

So what does vin de garage taste like?
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:11 AM

JD, where's Patti?
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:12 AM

Hmm...like we all garage-danced on a pile of white grapes. lol. But seriously...terroir...let's get the learnin' out of the way so we can get on about the biz of drinking some wine!
MW

Molly Wolfgram · 1:12 AM

Because at first glance I thought it said garbage
MW

Molly Wolfgram · 1:12 AM

Which is like, totally different from garage
MW

Molly Wolfgram · 1:12 AM

Unless you're my neighbors, and then they're the same.
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:12 AM

Lol, Molly. The winemakers dubbed it "vin de garage" because it was the wine they kept for themselves, and that's where they usually ended up drinking it.
MW

Molly Wolfgram · 1:13 AM

Whew...I was beginning to worry you might be slipping :)
MW

Molly Wolfgram · 1:13 AM

OK...I'll quit disrupting class...
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:13 AM

But my thought is they just thought it was good because they were drunk in the garage. I'm finding my CA to have a lot more character.
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:13 AM

★ Spotlighted from Sean Donaghy

Like your ice wine, Garbage, or for the house guests you don't like

JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:14 AM

Sean, you're on the spot! Define terroir for the class, please. ;)
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:15 AM

Hey! I said I'd save my ice wine for my mother, but that doesn't mean that I don't like her! She just happens to like that sort of thing. Don't judge the Mama!

Molly Wolfgram · 1:15 AM

Sean has jet lag and a hangover. He's just glad to be on terra firma.
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:15 AM

Haha! Nice copy/paste. Thanks, Wikipedia!
MW

Molly Wolfgram · 1:16 AM

Boom
MW

Molly Wolfgram · 1:16 AM

★ Spotlighted from Sean Donaghy

At its core is the assumption that the land from which the grapes are grown imparts a unique quality that is specific to that growing site

JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:17 AM

But, yes. Terrior is the particular set of geographic/geologic/climatic characteristics that define the region in which (as it pertains to wine) a grape is grown. And that affects the flavor, along with many other characteristics of the wine.
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:17 AM

★ Spotlighted from Sean Donaghy

Terroir can be very loosely translated as "a sense of place," which is embodied in certain characteristic qualities, the sum of the effects that the local environment has had on the production of the product. Terroir is often italicized in English wr

JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:17 AM

I like that, Sean - "a sense of place". It's like the signature of the grape.
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:18 AM

Which becomes a signature of the wine...
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:18 AM

Which eventually becomes a defining characteristic of my personality...
MW

Molly Wolfgram · 1:18 AM

:)

Hello, lovelies!

MW

Molly Wolfgram · 1:19 AM

Jennifer Finnell · 1:19 AM

Kim's here!!! Hey, lady! How's your terrior this evening?
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:19 AM

*terroir
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:19 AM

A frigid terroir. Tragic.
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:20 AM

That's right, Molly! Go ahead with your wine-snobby-successfullness, Kim. We'll wait. :)

Ummmm - I got to try a fabulous new SB today from Caymus vineyards -- Emmolo. YUMMY!

Jennifer Finnell · 1:21 AM

Did you sip it properly? Or did you just toss it back and, voila, match the perfect dish?

Molly Wolfgram · 1:21 AM

JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:23 AM

Okay, gang, I want a flavor profile from one of you. We're not just drinking like heathens, here! I've got minerality in my NZ. Mmmmm...
MW

Molly Wolfgram · 1:23 AM

★ Spotlighted from Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle

Again, I am drinking wine so I am a part of the group. Damn, here comes another fuzzy morning!!

MW

Molly Wolfgram · 1:23 AM

Hi Patti!
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:23 AM

And...I'm sorry, but I just get shallow fruitiness from CA. Coincidence? lol.
MW

Molly Wolfgram · 1:24 AM

★ Spotlighted from Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle

Everyone, allow me to intro Patti Welsh, wine expert and well, wino...

JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:24 AM

Hi, Patti! I've got a Marby, too! Betcha got it at Haskell's, huh? :)
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:25 AM

Patti, would you mind sharing with us a little tidbit from your vast knowledge base regarding just how terroir affects the flavor of the wine?
MW

Molly Wolfgram · 1:25 AM

★ Spotlighted from Kimberly Finnell

Emmolo Napa Valley SB - crisp, citrus fruits with complex minerality. Smooth and attention grabbing without too much grapefruit

MW

Molly Wolfgram · 1:25 AM

Kim, talk to me about complex minerality...
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:26 AM

Sounds lovely, Kim!
MW

Molly Wolfgram · 1:26 AM

It does, I must know more!
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:27 AM

★ Spotlighted from Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle

I don't know about terroir but I am a little frightened right now...

JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:27 AM

Don't be scared, JD - we're happy drunks. Harmless. And sorta smart, besides...
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:27 AM

★ Spotlighted from Kimberly Finnell

gotta go -- I'll be back

MW

Molly Wolfgram · 1:27 AM

I have to admit, in the interest of full disclosure, that I am not sipping my beloved wine...I'm sipping tea.
MW

Molly Wolfgram · 1:28 AM

Just in case you're wondering why I am so B-O-R-I-N-G tonight.
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:28 AM

All the Sauv Blancs I looked at today had screw caps. Is that the norm with this varietal these days?
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:28 AM

Baby steps, JD.

Molly Wolfgram · 1:28 AM

★ Spotlighted from Sean Donaghy

maybe Kim will bring up some appetizers

MW

Molly Wolfgram · 1:28 AM

I'm liking this sav blanc way better than the chilean wines of last week.

JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:28 AM

@Sean, BAHAHAHAHAAAA!!!
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:28 AM

★ Spotlighted from Sean Donaghy

literally tea-totalling

JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:29 AM

Jennifer, the terroir would be the soil, also what surrounds the vineyard...ocean (salty) or freshwater. Is the vineyard in a valley, is it near desert and so on...
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:29 AM

Thank you for sharing, Patti. And the specific characteristics of the land/soil affect the wine as well, correct?
MW

Molly Wolfgram · 1:30 AM

★ Spotlighted from Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle

I've been called a screwtop before...lol

JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:30 AM

★ Spotlighted from Sean Donaghy

my SB has notes of grapefruit limes and white peaches, I'm supposed to distinguish white peaches from regular peaches, wth is a white peach ?

JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:31 AM

@Sean, I think the comparison is more like unripe peaches vs. ripe, juicy, drippy peaches. That's easier to distinguish, isn't it?
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:31 AM

★ Spotlighted from Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle

I

MW

Molly Wolfgram · 1:31 AM

White pairs are more tart than sweet, perhaps?
MW

Molly Wolfgram · 1:32 AM

Aren't we supposed to know something about peaches given that we live in Georgia?
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:32 AM

Yes, but with the same flavor characteristics.
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:32 AM

I knew I liked you two...
MW

Molly Wolfgram · 1:32 AM

Screw tops on wine used to mean the wine was of lesser quality. Not the case today as it is less expensive for the vineyard to use this as opposed to "corkage" of days gone by. As you are no doubt experiencing tonight, quality in the wine itself

Jennifer Finnell · 1:32 AM

spitballs at the moderators

JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:34 AM

The thing is - I believe - that what makes a great wine is more than terroir, or any other factor for that matter. Of course those things do matter, but so does the individual palate.
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:34 AM

It's that sweet vs. salty thing again...
MW

Molly Wolfgram · 1:35 AM

★ Spotlighted from Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle

can we do that Sean? Spitballs at the moderators. I'm in!!

JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:35 AM

Right. But isn't is so much fun to expand one's horizons?
MW

Molly Wolfgram · 1:35 AM

Jenn, what are two most obvious differences in your wines?
MW

Molly Wolfgram · 1:36 AM

★ Spotlighted from Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle

I like a less sweet white...the sweets just make me well...sick

MW

Molly Wolfgram · 1:36 AM

don't try ice wine. just don't.
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:37 AM

My NZ is minerally, yet smooth in texture. Interesting and delightful. My CA is flat. Boring. Though I do get peaches.
MW

Molly Wolfgram · 1:37 AM

Well is it a white peach or not???
MW

Molly Wolfgram · 1:37 AM

Sean wants to know.
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:37 AM

I think my CA might be quite nice for someone else. It's not really lacking, I guess...just not my thing.
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:37 AM

It's a flat peach. lol
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:37 AM

One dimensional...
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:38 AM

But it's not an ice wine, so I will power through...

Jennifer Finnell · 1:39 AM

Patti, you're hired! :)
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:39 AM

Tasting notes: grapefruit forward, definate citrus notes, dryish but good. Would buy again.
MW

Molly Wolfgram · 1:40 AM

Jenn, we'll need to recruit new members each week for the other ones we scare off

Molly Wolfgram · 1:41 AM

★ Spotlighted from Jennifer "JD" Arbuckle

disposable employees...I like your style Sean

MW

Molly Wolfgram · 1:41 AM

Patti, what was the wine you're drinking?
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:42 AM

Just for the record, terroir affects more than just grapes (of course). This is a big factor in the taste of a lot of things we consume. Coffee is probably the next biggest "discriminatory" product.
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:42 AM

The vino is Nobilo vintage 2013. Nice.
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:42 AM

@Patti - ALWAYS!
MW

Molly Wolfgram · 1:42 AM

Definitely made note of that one! Sounds divine.

JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:48 AM
