Trick or Treat??? We pick treats, and this week's Wine Wednesday is devoted to uncovering the best wines to pair with Halloween candy pilfered from our children. Oh, come on! You know you do it - might as well do it with a little class! Please welcome Wine Snobbery veteran and special guest-host, Sean Donaghy! nnHere's to life!

SD

Sean Donaghy · 1:00 AM

Good evening folks !!
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:01 AM

Helloooo!!! Sorry I'm late - was looking for the leftover halloween candy...
SD

Sean Donaghy · 1:02 AM

already found mine
SD

Sean Donaghy · 1:02 AM

spent the day stealing some good information from the web
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:02 AM

Good job! Why doesn't candy have a reasonable expiration date. You know...like mayonaisse.
SD

Sean Donaghy · 1:03 AM

give it to the kids, they wont know any better
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:03 AM

Ha! So...everyone please give a warm welcome to our gracious guest host, Sean! (Please feel free to ridicule him like usual, though)

Sean Donaghy · 1:04 AM

JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:04 AM

Just cuz he's in the left comment column doesn't mean he's any better than the rest of us. ;)
SD

Sean Donaghy · 1:04 AM

★ Spotlighted from Jack Terry

Candy, twinkies and cockroaches, they'll outlast us all!

JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:04 AM

★ Spotlighted from Lena Anderson

Hello! Am I here? Lol sorry...first timer!

SD

Sean Donaghy · 1:05 AM

No problem Lena come join in !
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:05 AM

Hi, Lena! Thanks for joining us! Please feel free to speak freely. Like, really freely. We'll get the the turtlenecks & llamas eventually. You'll see... :)
SD

Sean Donaghy · 1:06 AM

So we thought we'd jump off with some thoughts on what Wines go well with leftover Halloween Candy
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:06 AM

Captain Jack! Nice to "see" you! And, you are correct, of course...
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:06 AM

Not really leftover Halloween candy, Sean. Let's be honest...we're going to steal the fresh stuff from our children while they sleep...
SD

Sean Donaghy · 1:07 AM

I am the resident internet plagiarizer, so the story goes, I kill unicorns every time i plagerize
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:07 AM

★ Spotlighted from Jack Terry

Hi boss! Feels odd to be on this side of the tawk.

JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:07 AM

Humbling, Jack, I'm sure. :)
SD

Sean Donaghy · 1:08 AM

Vanilla Tootsie rolls for me, like eating frosting
SD

Sean Donaghy · 1:08 AM

For the first time yesterday I saw a bag of them, I will not buy it, because it would be gone faster than a good riesling at the Wolf's house
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:09 AM

So, Steve was craving Twix's today. Let's start with that one, since it's what we'll be "handing out" on Halloween. P.S. we don't really hand out candy, cuz we usually get a total of one trick-or-treaters. So Steve gets the rest...
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:09 AM

Hahahaaaa!
SD

Sean Donaghy · 1:09 AM

so I will begin with a few thoughts on wine and chocalate
SD

Sean Donaghy · 1:09 AM

not my thoughts, but someones
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:09 AM

★ Spotlighted from Steve Hoffman

greetings everyone !

SD

Sean Donaghy · 1:10 AM

evening Steve, beer tonight ? duh
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:10 AM

There he is! Welcome, Steve! Twix's for everyone! with a nice, buttery chardonnay to compliment the caramel...
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:10 AM

Duh! lol
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:10 AM

★ Spotlighted from Jack Terry

Sounds like Steve's got a great system worked out!

SD

Sean Donaghy · 1:10 AM

Tips for Successfully Pairings Wines with Chocolate
SD

Sean Donaghy · 1:10 AM

Tip #1: To keep things simple, start with a wine that is slightly sweeter than the chocolate or chocolate-themed dessert
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:11 AM

Mmmmm...wine and chocolate. A timeless classic. Shall we begin with milk chocolate, or dark chocolate?
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:11 AM

OMG! You did homework for this!!!
SD

Sean Donaghy · 1:11 AM

When pairing wines with chocolate, try to match lighter, more elegant flavored chocolates with lighter-bodied wines; likewise, the stronger the chocolate, the more full-bodied the wine should be
SD

Sean Donaghy · 1:12 AM

told you I come prepared
SD

Sean Donaghy · 1:12 AM

a bittersweet chocolate tends to pair well with an intense, in-your-face California Zinfandel or even a tannin-driven Cabernet Sauvignon.
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:12 AM

Oh, yeah? Are you "wearing a turtleneck and riding a llama" prepared?
SD

Sean Donaghy · 1:12 AM

mind you i dont know what any of these things mean
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:13 AM

But back to your wine advice, I have to agree.
SD

Sean Donaghy · 1:13 AM

i'm more along the lines of, beer good, girls good, work bad
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:13 AM

I am a dark chocolate fan. You know - bitter to a point, yet sweet enough you still want to savor my presence for a moment...
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:13 AM

★ Spotlighted from Jack Terry

Sounds like he kidnapped Ernest and Julio Gallo prepared!

SD

Sean Donaghy · 1:14 AM

The darker the chocolate the more dry, tannin texture it will display. However, when you pair this darker chocolate up with a wine that also boasts stouter tannin structure, the chocolate will often overshadow or cancel out the wine's tannins on the
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:14 AM

I would pair me with a Zinfandel. Or maybe a Malbec. But only a GOOD Malbec, and they are hard to come by sometimes.
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:14 AM

★ Spotlighted from Steve Hoffman

chocolate goes well with my beer and my coffee

JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:15 AM

That Steve guy...he's pretty easy to please. :)
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:15 AM

★ Spotlighted from Jack Terry

In that sense it's not much different than pairing with a main course. Strong flavors to compliment each other, otherwise either the chocolate or wine will get overwhelmed.

JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:15 AM

Enter Jack Terry; wine expert extraordinaire!
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:15 AM

★ Spotlighted from Steve Hoffman

with a potato chip chaser

SD

Sean Donaghy · 1:16 AM

ok I see my reign here is going to be short lived
SD

Sean Donaghy · 1:16 AM

speaking of a Zin taking the higher alcohol and full-bodied, intense forward fruit of a Zinfandel and partnering it with the mild textures and buttery profile of white chocolate can have an unusual "melding" affect.
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:16 AM

Alright, so we all agree that dark chocolate needs a hefty red by it's side to bring out the best in both. But what about candy corn?
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:17 AM

Nonsense, Sean - you are a master in your own right! :)
SD

Sean Donaghy · 1:17 AM

★ Spotlighted from Lena Anderson

So I have a coconut addiction...tonight I'm pairing Almond Joys with a Pinot Noir. Am I doing this right? Haha

JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:17 AM

Ooohhhh! I'm going to have to try that pairing, Sean! Zin & white chocolate...sounds quite yummy!
SD

Sean Donaghy · 1:18 AM

Lena if you are enjoying it you are doing it right
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:18 AM

Exactly! Though I'm going to have to personally verify that via experience. :)
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:18 AM

★ Spotlighted from Steve Hoffman

cause sometimes you feel like a nut...

SD

Sean Donaghy · 1:18 AM

Dark or bittersweet chocolates, with higher cacao content (by definition dark chocolate contains a minimum of 35% cocoa solids) call for a wine that offers a fuller body, robust aromas and intense flavor sketches with bold fruit
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:18 AM

And sometimes you don't...
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:19 AM

BUT WHAT ABOUT CANDY CORN???
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:19 AM

★ Spotlighted from Jack Terry

Oh no Sean, it's all you. You did the homework. I'm just popping in and out in between hands of solitaire!

SD

Sean Donaghy · 1:19 AM

ok I focused on Chocolate, not eating spoonfuls of sugar
SD

Sean Donaghy · 1:20 AM

althought it does help the medicine go down
SD

Sean Donaghy · 1:20 AM

★ Spotlighted from Jack Terry

Candy corn pairs best with either Thunderbird or Mad Dog 20/20

JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:20 AM

Or pennies? Who the heck gives out pennies anymore? I would pair that with a whole bottle of anything. Cuz, you know, I just got a penny.
SD

Sean Donaghy · 1:20 AM

JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:21 AM

SD

Sean Donaghy · 1:21 AM

and we lose the under 45 crowd in a clowd of confusion
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:21 AM

★ Spotlighted from Jack Terry

HEY! You stole that picture from my Pinterest board. :-)

JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:21 AM

Um, Jack...only desperation pairs well with those.
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:21 AM

Hey! I'm the under 45 crowd!!!
SD

Sean Donaghy · 1:21 AM

the only thing you cant steal on the internet is porn, every thing else is free
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:21 AM

★ Spotlighted from Jack Terry

A clowd? Is that a crowd of clowns?

JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:22 AM

I think so...
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:22 AM

★ Spotlighted from Jack Terry

No, desperation is reserved for Strawberry Hill and Boones farm

SD

Sean Donaghy · 1:22 AM

typing goes pretty early here Jack
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:22 AM

Well, then...good thing my mom's not here. ;)
SD

Sean Donaghy · 1:23 AM

consider a Pinot Noir or a Merlot to handle dark chocolate around the 55% cocoa mark
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:23 AM

I mean...I hope she's not. Love you, Mom! Boone's Farm rocks!
SD

Sean Donaghy · 1:24 AM

why do I think we had a monkey train of thought last season ?
SD

Sean Donaghy · 1:24 AM

★ Spotlighted from Jack Terry

you should my NFL tawks on Tuesday. My spelling is like a monkey having a stroke.

JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:24 AM

Okay, how about BUTTERFINGERS???
SD

Sean Donaghy · 1:24 AM

ok I've got this
SD

Sean Donaghy · 1:24 AM

Chocolate with Nuts (including peanut butter cups!): Madeira, tawny Port, PX or Oloroso Sherry
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:24 AM

Of course you do... ;)
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:25 AM

I think port goes with chocolate covered cherries ( and a follow-up 5-mile run), but they don't hand those out much on Halloween...
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:26 AM

Chic-O-Stix?
SD

Sean Donaghy · 1:26 AM

personally If I'm digging through a bag of butterfingers I want, (no don't say it) some ice cold milk
SD

Sean Donaghy · 1:26 AM

what is a Chic o Stix ?
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:27 AM

Oh, dear God! Only the best retro candy ever!!!
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:27 AM

It's like, if you just took the center out of a Butterfinger & added a hint of coconut.
SD

Sean Donaghy · 1:28 AM

★ Spotlighted from Jack Terry

Must be a midwest thing...

SD

Sean Donaghy · 1:28 AM

so I saw a post last week on how to make Butterfingers with three ingredients
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:28 AM

Right...I think I would pair that with WOP.
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:28 AM

Oh, do tell!
SD

Sean Donaghy · 1:28 AM

peanut butter, chocolate, and anyone care to guess the third ?
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:29 AM

Ooh, ooh! Is it Pinot?
SD

Sean Donaghy · 1:29 AM

the crunchy middle can be recreated with..............
SD

Sean Donaghy · 1:29 AM

Candy corn !!!
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:29 AM

Argh! The suspense!
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:29 AM

WHAT???
SD

Sean Donaghy · 1:30 AM

melt it in the microwave smoth er in the peanut butter and top with chocalate
SD

Sean Donaghy · 1:30 AM

★ Spotlighted from Lena Anderson

Ahh! I was just going to answer your question! My Googling is too slow ;) Must be the pinot!

JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:30 AM

Okay, how about Peeps? They're not just for Easter anymore, y'know.
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:30 AM

Lena, you should not feed the wine to the computer. It's for you.
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:31 AM

★ Spotlighted from Jack Terry

No, they're for insulation. And speaking of things to put in the microwave...

SD

Sean Donaghy · 1:31 AM

Chocolate with Mint: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cab Franc, Shiraz, Moscato d'Asti, some sweet dessert style red wines
SD

Sean Donaghy · 1:31 AM

so grab a york peppermint patty and knock yourself out with a Shiraz
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:32 AM

So, Jack, now we've got Peeps, wine, and home improvement, all tangled up together. What's your recommendation on that scenario?
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:33 AM

Sounds interesting, Sean. Then will we get the sensation we're whooshing down the Alps? :)
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:33 AM

...or something equally entertaining?
SD

Sean Donaghy · 1:34 AM

y'know a typical day in Wisconsin or Minnesaota, anything later than august on the Calander
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:34 AM

★ Spotlighted from Lena Anderson

Butterfingers are Nick's favorite. I just told him the recipe and we have all the ingredients...we just may try that! Although tonight may not be the best idea...

JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:35 AM

Hahahahaaa! Touche! "When I eat a York Peppermint Patty and chase it with a nice Shiraz, I get the sensation that I need to hunker down & watch some football, eat some cheese curds, and not venture out of the house until spring!" Like that? :)
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:35 AM

★ Spotlighted from Jack Terry

Drunk the wine, throw out the peeps, hire a general contractor that specializes in home remodeling. I know a good company in Phoenix...

JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:36 AM

@Jack Terry - excellent advice!
SD

Sean Donaghy · 1:36 AM

and for the Milky Way Bars, Chocolate with Caramel: Madeira, Tawny Port, PX Sherry, Vin Santo, Muscat de Beaumes-de-Venise, sweet sparkling wines
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:37 AM

While I can see the virtues of your recommendations there, I would switch that to the Milky Way Dark and grab a Pinot.
SD

Sean Donaghy · 1:37 AM

gotta be prepared never know what the kids are going to come home with
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:37 AM

Or maybe just the Pinot...
SD

Sean Donaghy · 1:38 AM

and for entertaining the kids, you could dutifully answer the door each time they ring the bell, or.....
SD

Sean Donaghy · 1:38 AM

★ Spotlighted from Jack Terry

What if you've got a health nut in your neighborhood and your kids come home with an apple or granola or something tofu-ish?

SD

Sean Donaghy · 1:38 AM

Jack that house is getting egged by the older kids
SD

Sean Donaghy · 1:39 AM

this is not a tofu-ish group
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:39 AM

Ooh, ooh! Okay, here's a question for you guys? How about a Tootsie Pop? Two-part question: A) How many licks - really - does it take to get to the center, and B) pair a wine with each layer (outside & inside).
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:39 AM

What Sean said...
SD

Sean Donaghy · 1:39 AM

Milk Chocolate: Port, Madeira, Vin Santo, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Gewurztraminer, some sweeter styles of sparkling wine
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:40 AM

★ Spotlighted from Steve Hoffman

JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:40 AM

★ Spotlighted from Jack Terry

3 licks (I've seen the commercial) which makes it hard to have more than one wine.

SD

Sean Donaghy · 1:40 AM

are for the sugarry coating Miuster Owl, says three licks
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:40 AM

Everyone knows the wise old owl lied...
SD

Sean Donaghy · 1:40 AM

anyone like the blow pops ?
SD

Sean Donaghy · 1:41 AM

★ Spotlighted from Jack Terry

who?

SD

Sean Donaghy · 1:41 AM

we really should not encourage that sort of humor
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:41 AM

NO!!! But I imagine if I were more of a Moscato kind of gal, I would probably find things like blow pops less offensive.
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:41 AM

★ Spotlighted from Lena Anderson

Lol Dad did you google that?

JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:41 AM

★ Spotlighted from Steve Hoffman

JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:41 AM

★ Spotlighted from Jack Terry

I don't see blow pops that often anymore. And I need no encouragement for bad jokes.

JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:42 AM

What humor should we not encourage, Sean? P.S. Turtleneck. :)
SD

Sean Donaghy · 1:43 AM

punny jokes shall be left at the door
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:43 AM

Off the candy topic for a moment, I tried a cider wine recipe recently that was actually quite delicous!
SD

Sean Donaghy · 1:43 AM

this I want to hear
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:44 AM

Mulled cider with sparkling wine. Your choice of wine, but I found a green apple one that cut the sweetness of the cider nicely, creating a quite refreshing bev.
SD

Sean Donaghy · 1:44 AM

I make a mean spicy Pumpkin Soup, a Cider wine would go very nicely with that
SD

Sean Donaghy · 1:45 AM

and that is going to be on the list for a pre Thanksgiving Trial Run
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:45 AM

Of course, I "fixed" the recipe to incorporate a higher wine to cider ratio, but it's all up to the drinker, after all...
SD

Sean Donaghy · 1:45 AM

of course you did,
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:46 AM

★ Spotlighted from Lena Anderson

Jenn...make some on Sunday? :)

SD

Sean Donaghy · 1:46 AM

ok last internet theft for you White Chocolate lovers
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:46 AM

Oh, yes! Great idea, Lena! I wonder how well that will pair with brats? Fantastic, I'm sure. :)
SD

Sean Donaghy · 1:46 AM

White Chocolate: Late harvest or ice wines, Orange Muscat, Moscato d'Asti, slightly sweet rosé, Brachetto d'Acqui, Tokaji, and German Riesling on the sweet end of the spectrum
SD

Sean Donaghy · 1:47 AM

I'm not a fan, and we all know how the ice wine night went last year, bleeech !!
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:47 AM

I'm not normally a fan of the sweet stuff, Sean. Or white chocolate. But I must admit that your pairing suggestions have intrigued me enough that I plan to give both of them a chance.
SD

Sean Donaghy · 1:47 AM

★ Spotlighted from Jack Terry

Errazzuriz (don't trust my spelling!) Late Harvest Sauvignon Blanc is my hands down favorite wine this time of year!

JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:48 AM

It's almost Beaujolais time!!! Whatever shall we pair with that? Besides my mouth...
SD

Sean Donaghy · 1:49 AM

★ Spotlighted from Jack Terry

Are you kidding? I finish my first bottle before the turkey even makes it out of the oven! Usually I pair it with a Cowboys voctory!

JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:49 AM

I like to cook with wine, too, Jack. Mostly for me...
SD

Sean Donaghy · 1:49 AM

and by Thanksgiving my Jets, have blown up the season, this year we didnt even make it Halloween
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:50 AM

I'm napping by the time football comes around. Or maybe just napping through it? Either way, yay, wine? Making family holidays bearable since the beginning of civilization!
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:51 AM

Just kidding. Love family holidays. Love wine. We all work very well together. :)
SD

Sean Donaghy · 1:51 AM

This year for the 4th time, I will be running a 1/2 Marathon on Thanksgiving morning, then going home and cooking dinner
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:52 AM

Wth, Sean? Are you some kind of sadist?
SD

Sean Donaghy · 1:52 AM

sounds like another runner i know
JF

Jennifer Finnell · 1:52 AM

Well, she definitely is... ;)
SD

Sean Donaghy · 1:53 AM
